A fiery showdown erupted in the UK Parliament as Jon Trickett directly challenged Prime Minister Keir Starmer over the risks posed by Donald Trump’s escalating strategy in the Strait of Hormuz.

Trickett raised serious concerns about the safety of British troops and military assets, warning against being dragged into what he called a “foolish” blockade that could endanger lives. His sharp question—whether the UK would guarantee that no personnel would be put at risk—sparked a tense and heated exchange in Parliament.

Starmer responded firmly, stating that the UK is “not getting involved” in any blockade and is instead working with international partners to ensure the strait remains open. However, the exchange has raised bigger questions—can Britain truly stay out if tensions escalate further?

00:00Sir, can I echo the comments about the President's statement on Easter Sunday
00:05that in an evening he could destroy a two and a half thousand year old civilisation.
00:11But on the question of the Straits of Amoz, isn't it clear that the Straits were open
00:16before the President foolishly launches a legal wall?
00:21And can I ask the Prime Minister to say quite clearly that no British military assets
00:25or brave personnel would be putting at risk in a foolish idea to blockade the Straits even further,
00:31which came from the President yesterday?
00:35Thank you, Kim.
00:36For that, it is, of course, Iran that is putting in the chokehold on the strait.
00:40That is wrong, and the strength of feeling across the Gulf last week was very, very clear to me.
00:45I can assure him that we are not getting involved in the proposal to blockade the strait.
00:50On the contrary, we are working with other countries to try and get the strait open
00:54and fully open for free navigation, something this country has championed for years and years and years.

02:01Trump's illegal war on Iran and his genocidal threat to kill a whole civilisation,
02:09a part and parcel of a dangerous new U.S. security plan.
02:14The Trump doctrine is based upon yet more war and tearing up international law,
02:21making the whole world less safe.
02:23Prime Minister, given that, isn't it time for Britain to stop being a junior partner to the U.S.
02:30and pursue a truly independent foreign policy?
02:34And shouldn't the very first step be to end all U.S. access to British military bases for Trump's war
02:41on Iran?
02:44We have British civilians in the Gulf region, about 300,000.
02:51And they are at risk because of Iran's actions, and it's my duty to ensure that we protect them.
02:57That is why we've taken action in our own right, particularly with our pilots.
03:02It is also why I've allowed the bases to be used for defensive purposes
03:06to prevent those attacks on our civilians as much as anything else who are in the region.
03:11And I'm never going to abandon them to their fate
03:14when there is incoming missiles and drones into the areas where they are living and where they are working.
03:20It's my duty to protect them, and I'll continue to do so.
