00:00The thing that allowed this relationship to get to the point where it is now is that Lenny called Daryl
00:05one day and asked him for money because he was broke.
00:07And Daryl, knowing the behavior, being able to spot it from a mile away, understood that Lenny wasn't calling for
00:13money so he could eat.
00:14He was calling for money because he wanted to buy some more drugs.
00:17But Daryl agreed to do it. He gave him the money, but he agreed to do it because he really
00:20believed in his heart of hearts.
00:21And through his own experiences that the next time Lenny needed to call somebody, he would call somebody he absolutely
00:26trusted with the idea of trying to get some help.
00:28By giving him the money, Daryl hoped that Lenny would call him when that happened, and he did.
00:33And Daryl was receptive to it and subsequently has just been aggressively trying to get Lenny well.
00:37You know, I spoke to Lenny on the phone. I can tell you he sounds a lot different than the
00:42character a lot of people saw in the documentary a couple of years ago, Once Upon a Time in Queens,
00:46where, you know, his insights were welcome and they were funny and they were honest and they were candid, but
00:51they also looked like they were being delivered by the town drunk.
00:53His voice is clearer now. His thoughts seem clearer. And that's where they are now.
00:57And Daryl is largely responsible for that, even though he doesn't want to take a lot of credit for it.
01:01He just talks about it being a friend, taking after a friend.
01:04But anybody else who will see this knows that Daryl has been important in terms of getting Lenny to rehab,
01:09making sure he goes to his meetings, making sure his bills are paid.
01:11And Lenny is beyond grateful for all that Daryl has done for him because he's in a time in his
01:16life now where he wants to make amends for all the things that he's done.
01:19And look, it's going to take a long time because there are a lot of things for Lenny to make
01:22amends for.
