00:00When a loved one passes away, your pet grieves with you.
00:03A pet can be significantly affected by the death of a companion.
00:07Both cats and dogs show signs of grievance differently.
00:10Dr. Andrea Y2, Medical Director of Behavioral Vets,
00:15said that when an owner dies, pets experience a change in their routine.
00:19Pets don't mourn as humans do, but dogs, for example,
00:23tend to eat less or more slowly, as well as change their sleeping habits.
00:28They may sleep in the normal spot of the deceased person.
00:31Cats can be more vocal, and those vocalizations may be louder than normal.
00:36Exercise is a good way to help your pet deal with the loss.
00:40Engaging them in social enrichment like doggy daycare or training can be helpful as well.
00:45Pet MDs suggest that animal grief will run its course in weeks to months,
00:50but they can be affected by human stress,
00:52so your pet will likely continue to feel the loss while you grieve.
00:56Help your grieving pet by sticking to its daily routines.
01:00Offer extra attention and affection.
01:02Provide new stimulating toys.
01:04And most importantly, don't reprimand them for the behavioral changes that come through the loss.
01:10Just like humans, pets need time to process their emotions and move through grief.
01:14Be there for them and support that.
