00:00On this week's World of Saltwater Fishing, it's Mahi time off Isla Morata in the fabulous Florida Keys.
00:06Joining me is noted marine artist, Pazda Pantaleo. Stay tuned.
00:24George Bovarumo's World of Saltwater Fishing. Big fish don't stand a chance.
00:30When it comes to game fish in the fabulous Florida Keys, few species draw as many anglers down here than Mahi.
00:46And when that first run kicks off around April or May, droves of offshore anglers head to the fabulous Florida Keys in pursuit of them.
00:54And we are no different.
00:55Here we were in June in Isla Morata with the Mark VI, set to go out and capitalize on the Mahi run.
01:03Joining me is Isla Morata resident and noted marine artist, Pazda Pantaleo.
01:08Roberto Pantaleo, my given name. Pantaleo is hard to pronounce.
01:15Pazda Fazul was a slangy nickname that they gave my older brother and I was called Pazda Jr. growing up.
01:20And as he moved on and I kind of moved into his slot, I became the Pazda instead of Pazda Jr.
01:27Started signing artwork and various types of work back in the day with the word Pazda.
01:33And everybody seemed to like it.
01:34And before I knew it, it was impossible to get rid of.
01:37My true love of me painting propelled me for many years until I finally found fishing, which was my addiction.
01:45Our trip generally starts down here, especially in Isla Morata, as we trailer the Mark VI into Safe Harbor Marina.
01:58That's where we launch.
02:00And I'll store my trailer there.
02:02And to make it even ultra convenient this time around is that we were staying at the brand new Papa Joe's on Isla Morata,
02:10a major institution, which we'll get into a little bit later on the show.
02:13It was a gorgeous, flat, calm morning.
02:16Pazda met me at the Papa Joe's.
02:19From there, the game plan was to run out, put the Simrad radar on bird mode,
02:24and look for working birds, debris, weed lines, the usual items that would draw us to the mahi.
02:32And off we went, looking for mahi.
02:34Talk about a textbook perfect day.
02:43The seeds were absolutely flat.
02:46You would be able to see any kind of debris, weeds, anything from a distance.
02:50Same with birds.
02:51Plus, we had the Simrad radar helping us in that department.
02:54And the anticipation level was just really running high.
02:57Now, as I normally do before these offshore trips, I had a little advanced intel a day prior from Roth's ocean fishing forecast analyses.
03:07He had sent me a shoot of what the Gulf Stream and blended blue waters and a true edge of the stream
03:13happened to be doing off this section of Isla Morata.
03:16Once we got out to that zone, 1,200, 1,300 feet of water, beautiful blue water, but there was nothing much going on out there.
03:26What we decided to do to stay mobile, instead of putting out the full-blown trolling spread at this stage of the game,
03:32we put two flat lines out back.
03:35And we just trolled around the area, watching the radar.
03:38Everyone's looking every place to try to find some sign that would lead us to mahi.
03:43Then, we saw it, some more birds got together, and they start going down, and they're moving, and they're chasing a school of mahi.
03:51We get in there, and then sure enough, we're hooked up.
03:56There you go, there's one.
03:59All right, Pasta, good one.
04:02There you go.
04:04Thank you, thank you.
04:07All right, let's see if I got any fun.
04:09Nice and easy here, Pasta.
04:10Hey, Pasta, I know how you already set.
04:15A little takedown, a little breakdown, a little shakedown.
04:19All right, I'm going to have a backup ready for you.
04:22Let me do this, Pasta.
04:24What I'm going to do is I'm going to put this rod in the holder.
04:28Okay.
04:29Let's bring yours up, and then let me take a look at them.
04:33I'm going to take a gamble, Pasta.
04:34Don't get mad if I lose your fish.
04:35Okay, good.
04:37And I didn't lose them.
04:38You got yourself a dinner.
04:39There you go.
04:40Chicken dinner, baby.
04:41I'm going to tell you, you know, again, you see things in a totally different fashion, being a marine artist, than what I'm seeing.
04:47That's right.
04:47All right, what are you seeing as I got this dolphin?
04:49I'm seeing dinner.
04:51I'm waiting to see what I want to see.
04:53He's waiting to see what he wants to see.
04:55We're both waiting.
04:56And when it happens, he goes into his gear.
04:59I go into my gear.
05:00We pull this fish in, you know.
05:02So he's in a fishing mode.
05:04I'm into art mode.
05:04We throw him in the box, got dinner, and the light and everything, the way, and I'm just looking at everything, smiling, and he's like, okay, get that bait back out.
05:13Let's go.
05:14So two different guys doing the same thing, but two different kind of visuals on what's going on that day.
05:21We both did great catching fish, and I can tell you, he scratches it a few times and goes, hey, enough of the staring at these things.
05:28Let's just keep fishing.
05:28George Poveromo's World of Saltwater Fishing is proudly brought to you by Penn.
05:34Let the battle begin.
05:35Mako, you'll find them where the fish are.
05:38Bass Pro Shops and Cabela's, your adventure starts here.
05:41Mercury Marine, go boldly.
05:44George, we'll be right back.
05:47With our first mahi in the boat and confident soaring, we knew it was only a matter of time before the big payoff occurred.
05:53I'm fishing with marine artist Pasta Pantaleo off Isla Morata in the Florida Keys.
06:00So what usually happens when you get into a school dolphin, the calmness that happened to be aboard that boat just turns in a complete chaos.
06:14You hooked?
06:15I'll go back there.
06:17All right, I'll go back.
06:18I'll pick the action up here.
06:20I'm on.
06:20All right, go ahead.
06:21I'll get the boat.
06:21You go.
06:22I'm on.
06:22I'm going to try to get a, let me get a solid hook up here.
06:25We got chunk bait if we need it.
06:26I do.
06:28I'm going to, I'm going to turn this valley out right here.
06:30Got a chunk on it.
06:32And let's see if I could, if there's any followers behind you.
06:35Whoop.
06:40All right, Pasta, you can bring yours in.
06:44You got a bunch here.
06:45I'm going to, okay.
06:45I'm going to put this in a holder.
06:46I'm going to get another spinner hooked up.
06:49Welcome to the Pasta Shuffle.
06:51I'm fine.
06:52All right, coming around you, Pasta?
06:56Yep.
06:56Here, you can take the spinner and let me get hooked up and then we can rotate out.
07:00All right.
07:01Did I miss him?
07:02No, I got him.
07:03I got him.
07:04There's a couple of them around.
07:05There we go.
07:08How you doing there, Pasta?
07:09Look at them all around here.
07:10Yep.
07:11This is so good.
07:12This is fun.
07:13Right on in, buddy.
07:14Dolphin chaos.
07:20Real tight.
07:21I'm on.
07:21I'm on.
07:22Go ahead.
07:22Pull him out that way.
07:24Good one, Pasta.
07:25Good one.
07:26Look at that.
07:26You're pretty good with a rod and reel, too.
07:28It's not just a brush you're good with.
07:33Yes, sir, Pasta.
07:35I guess I'll bring mine next.
07:36All right.
07:39You're going to come in here.
07:44I'd like to get this guy in the box, but I want to unclip him.
07:47And he's in.
07:48But look what we just did today.
07:49We just interacted with a school of mahi-mahi, Dorado.
07:55They leap and they jump around.
07:57The great table fair.
07:58And you get to see nature's beauty in its hole.
08:01There's no better way to round off your day as fishing.
08:03With enough mahi in a box to make everyone happy, we called it an early day and headed
08:09back to the new Papa Joe's waterfront in Isla Morata, Florida Keys.
08:14The new Papa Joe's waterfront in Isla Morata is a rebirth of a historic Florida Keys landmark.
08:20The waterfront views from their restaurant and tiki bar are both relaxing and breathtaking
08:24at the same time.
08:26The tiki bar is an equally impressive socializing spot, boasts in a wide selection of adult beverages.
08:32It's an ideal place to wind down after a successful day offshore with some Papa's
08:37Pillar rum-inspired drinks.
08:40The well-kept secret here, well, that is until now, is Papa Joe's waterfront has two VIP
08:45penthouse suites.
08:47Each elegantly appointed unit has a full kitchen, living area, and bathroom, along with a separate
08:53bedroom, bathroom, and shower.
08:56However, Pasta Pantaleo's decor adds to the class of these suites.
09:01A spacious balcony provides a waterfront view that is among the very best anywhere in the
09:06Florida Keys.
09:07We docked the Mark 6 downstairs.
09:10The new Papa Joe's takes pride on its diverse lunch and dinner menus, where everything from
09:15unique appetizers and locally-inspired main courses to desserts are all extraordinarily prepared.
09:22Here's Papa Joe's proprietor, Charles Hortel, for the inside scoop.
09:26Alan Wilkinson, you know, the executive chef here, you know, this is really his baby.
09:30I built the place, you know, I have a vision here, but, you know, our conversation is between
09:34me and the executive.
09:35I mean, he's just taken this place to the next level and done everything in our imagination
09:39that we could ever succeed for Phil here.
09:41I mean, he's just done an awesome job of creating an amazing Florida Keys Cuisine.
09:45And actually, here he comes right now with our lunch.
09:49Looks good.
09:49How are we doing, guys?
09:50Good, good.
09:51Alan, Chef Alan, what kind of fish is in there?
09:54All right, so this is triple tail.
09:55Whoa.
09:56One of my favorite fish down here in the Keys.
09:58And there's no way I'm going to turn that in for a cheeseburger.
10:00No, no, no.
10:00You don't want the cheeseburger.
10:01I'm keeping my cheeseburger.
10:02You don't want the cheeseburger.
10:03So what we want to try to do is kind of make some food and a new restaurant for the future
10:08generation, but still be familiar to all of our clientele.
10:11Papa Joe's has a really deep history in the Keys.
10:13So we want to be able to satisfy our older clientele and our newer clientele and just
10:19be a little bit different, but make it Keys-friendly.
10:22This place is so magnificent, you almost don't want to leave to go fishing.
10:26Almost.

10:48George, we'll be right back.
10:51After a successful day one, we knew exactly where we'd find the mahi on day two.
10:57Pasta Pantaleo and I are expecting nothing short of a fun and productive day well offshore
11:01of Isla Mirada in the Florida Keys.
11:03Okay, the next morning, we started a half hour earlier, and the deal was, let's go out in
11:11Sabiki some pilchards.
11:13That was the only thing that we were lacking on on day one.
11:16We had all the natural baits, but no live baits.
11:19So once we had three dozen live baits, they just racked the rods, and so we got a commotion,
11:251200 horsepower, the V10s racing right to the same exact zone that we started earlier, where
11:33we had that first set of birds come up.
11:35And this time, we had one extra arsenal with us, and that was live bait.
11:38So pretty much day two was our run and gun mode, so it all came down to finding sets
11:52of working birds.
11:53That was the goal.
11:54We had nothing else that we could fish.
11:56If we stumbled over a board or something, fantastic, but it was birds.
12:01And fortunately, we didn't have to wait long that morning.
12:04We got to our zone, and there were diving birds.
12:06We raced over to them, pitched the live baits out in there, and it was game on.
12:11Here comes another large school of dolphin.
12:14Here I got picked up.
12:16All right, Pasta, now you get ready, because if that school comes up, or if you want to
12:20throw behind me, go out there.
12:22They're here.
12:23All right, you over there hooked up yet, Pasta?
12:25I think I am.
12:26I'm out over this side.
12:28Let's see if they come.
12:29Pasta's hooked up.
12:30I love the sound.
12:35Give me a second.
12:36Grab this, leader.
12:40All right, good one.
12:42I'm trying to get us another hookup.
12:43Come on.
12:45Are you hooked up, Pasta?
12:46Yeah, I'm on on a squid.
12:47Nice.
12:48Should I hold him here?
12:49And I'm going to get mine in there, I think.
12:51We got him right behind me.
12:52I know.
12:53I got two here.
12:56I'm going to be flipping mine in.
12:57Crazy Mahi morning.
13:13Crazy Mahi morning, pal.
13:14Love and peace.
13:15Love and peace.
13:15Love and peace.
13:15And down.
13:31There are two more coming your way, Pasta.
13:32Slide him in.
13:33Just push him in.
13:33Oh, man.

14:32Mahi represent the most sought-after offshore game fish throughout the entire Florida Keys.
14:39Although a possible catch year-round, their main migration here begins in April, with May
14:43and June being peak months.
14:45The pick-in become more challenging in July and August.
14:48Yet, come September and also early October, another sizable push of mahi enter the Florida
14:54Keys.
14:54Best bet?
14:56Quickly test an area for mahi by simply trolling two flat lines for around 15 minutes or so.
15:02And artbypasta.com, from catch to canvas, rendering.
15:06Catch to canvas, baby.
15:08With two amazing mahi blitzes, and plenty of dinners for the team in the fish box, do you
15:13think we have one more blitz left in us?
15:15Of course we do.
15:17I think I'm on.
15:18I'm on.
15:19All right, good.
15:20To my left?
15:21Yeah.
15:21I'll trade you.
15:22Yeah.
15:22Are you on?
15:32Throw behind you.
15:32Yeah, I'm on.
15:33I'm on.
15:34Okay.
15:38All right, pasta, here we go.
15:39They're all here.
15:40I got one here, and one up's over here hooked up.
15:44And we got one, two, three on, possibly get number four.
15:47And all around this boat, man.
15:49It's crazy.
15:50All right, I'm on.
15:52Yeah, nice pasta.
15:53All right, I'm going to get, let's get a couple in the box.
15:56All right, thank you.
16:04Finding the birds, nothing else out in this ocean.
16:06You find the working sets of birds, and this is what happens.
16:10Other than that, it's like a desert.
16:12Nothing floating.
16:14Weeds are scarce.
16:15Birds are giving them away, and we're fortunate to have to find them.
16:29Third patch of fish.
16:30We seem to be able to find them both days in a row.
16:34Conditions are unbelievable.
16:37I tell you what, you couldn't want better boi fishing than right here in the Florida Keys,
16:41where it never rains.
16:48But I know I took the time to rig a couple dozen trolling baits, so I said, at least let me burn these out.
16:55So I start to put a few baits out back and trolling, and I'm watching and making sure everything's going good.
17:00And I had asked, you know, pasta a question.
17:03I'd hear an answer.
17:04So I look around, I don't see him.
17:06You got these baits adjusted.
17:0715, 20.
17:15Where the heck is he at?
17:16What are you doing here?
17:17Hey, hey.
17:18I have to drop the bait back 15, 20 feet.
17:20I had a nice day on the water, man.
17:22I'd have to take it in now.
17:24All right, this is the first for me.
17:25Come on, man.
17:26Oh, you stay there and paint.
17:28You know why?
17:28Because I got five lines out there.
17:30Anything goes down, it'll all be my fish.
17:32Hey, you clean them, I'll paint them, all right?
17:36What do you want to do with this guy?
17:38So, you know, we had two big full days offshore, man.
17:43I mean, the clouds, the water, the bait fish.
17:48It was just amazing.
17:50Amazing time.
17:51Mother Nature at its best, and it changes every five seconds.
17:55Every five seconds, you see another condition.
17:57And you look up there early in the morning in storm clouds, but beautiful calm water, and
18:03we're finding sets of fish pretty much on and off.
18:06We're out in 1,700 feet of water.
18:09That inspires me.
18:10So what I'm doing here is I'm doing a synopsis of what's gone on in the last couple days here.
18:15He was just capturing the action as he saw it.
18:17And this is the first time this had ever, ever happened to me, having an artist on the boat do a quick sketch out there offshore by La Mirada of a mahi that we were catching.
18:30So, you know, another first.
18:31And I will tell you this, is that picture is proudly displayed in my office.
18:37Talk about something to remember.
18:38Mahi fishing off the Florida Keys, more specifically off of Isla Mirada, like I had just completed with pasta.
18:53We spent two days in June, and we certainly got on the mahi.
18:59We had to work for it, for sure.
19:01But like anything else, if you want a good day out there, some days you have to work and have to have all the right tricks.
19:06And we pulled it all together and took home plenty of fillets for us and our entire production team.
19:13And let me tell you, that trip was unbelievable.
19:16The camaraderie was like we had been doing it ourselves together for years, like we fished together every weekend.
19:21It was seamless.
19:23The weather gods were there for us on this particular trip.
19:27The fish were hard to find, but we worked them and we found them.
19:32We covered a lot of dirt, as they like to say.
19:34And we found some great fish, and we got some great footage.
19:38And at the end of the day, it just seemed like we went out fishing like we were two teenagers hanging out in gorgeous Isla Mirada weather.
19:45And I couldn't ask for a better weekend fishing with George.
19:48And this is how we looked at everything from the trolling spreads to the beauty of the changing color of the waters.
19:55Two different people, two different visions, but we're united for one thing.
20:01Quality fishing that we so thoroughly enjoy.
20:05It happened to have both made our livelihood on.
20:08And it was just an amazing time to be out there with Pasta Pantaleo, a good friend, and one heck of a marine artist.
