00:00Alan, what are you doing?
00:04I'm recreating Newton's greatest discovery.
00:07Pop this on your head.
00:10Incoming.
00:14Alan, enough. Stop.
00:16Did you not listen to a word I said after rehearsal?
00:19You said Secret Genius is a serious show
00:22and I have to put some gravity in my performance.
00:25I said gravitas.
00:27Oh.
00:32Across the UK,
00:34there are estimated to be a million undiscovered geniuses.
00:38Crawling all secret geniuses.
00:41As is a parliament here,
00:42we're not going to get any geniuses in there, are they?
00:45Ordinary people.
00:46When I was a kid,
00:48I used to know everybody's reg plate on a state where I lived.
00:51With extraordinary brains.
00:53Nitrogen, oxygen, fluorine, neon, sodium, magnesium, aluminium, silicon,
00:57and I think the next one's phosphorus.
00:59Who have no idea just how clever they are.
01:03I had several teachers say to me,
01:04you never amount to anything,
01:05so if I can prove a point, let's do it.
01:09Nominated by friends, family or themselves.
01:13People see me and they don't think I'm capable of something like this.
01:17Am I doing this to prove anyone wrong?
01:18Absolutely.
01:20Each week, 12 people from different corners of the UK
01:25Complete the numbers here, Punks.
01:28Have been invited to Genius HQ.
01:31Oh, my goodness.
01:34Here, they'll compete in a series of mind-stretching games.
01:38Where do we begin?
01:39Designed with Nensa,
01:41the society for the world's smartest people.
01:44I've literally just figured it out.
01:47Last week...
01:48Oh, my God.
01:49I've got it right.
01:50Nathan, Ollie and Justin
01:52made it through the North West and Northern Ireland heat.
01:56We're through.
01:58Well done.
01:58Well played.
01:59Now it's the turn of our players
02:01from the North East and Scotland.
02:03Struggling here, aren't we?
02:04But which three will make it to the final?
02:07Oh, my God!
02:08The winner of Secret Genius is...
02:12I think people sometimes think Vickers can be a bit daft
02:25and a bit silly and have their heads in the clouds.
02:26So this is about pushing at the boundaries
02:29of what I'm capable of.
02:31Today, 12 more high-IQ hopefuls
02:34will come here to Genius HQ.
02:38I'm a waitress,
02:39and although I love the job at the restaurant,
02:41being a mum and wife,
02:44my brain still feels like
02:45it is craving a bit more than that.
02:48I don't know what, though.
02:48That's the problem.
02:50Some of them might have an inkling
02:52they've got what it takes.
02:54Others will be as surprised to discover
02:56they're a secret genius
02:58as I would be to discover
02:59I have a talent for mixed martial arts.
03:02I like to look after people.
03:07I think I'm quite nurturing.
03:08And I don't think those are things
03:10that you see in people
03:11that you think are intelligent.
03:13I've got these fluffy skills,
03:15but it doesn't mean
03:16that everything's switched off here.
03:19Will one of these players
03:21have what it takes to make it to the top?
03:24I'm Nick, Caden.
03:24Hello, hi, Selina.
03:26And become Britain's first secret genius.
03:31I'm going to get the kettle on.
03:34I'll come help.
03:34Oh, we've got cups and saucers.
03:36Good with me, saucers.
03:38Nice to eat, Amanda.
03:39Jess.
03:40Jess, Greal.
03:41What made you, like, decide to do this, then?
03:43Being a lorry driver,
03:45I am part of an exclusive little group
03:47called Mother Truckers.
03:49Say it carefully.
03:50LAUGHTER
03:50And they had a Facebook post up, basically.
03:54My brain has never really been stretched
03:59in the work environment.
04:02It's one of the miracles of my brain
04:04is that I can remember all the lyrics
04:05of all the songs from every tune in the 1980s.
04:08I do have a wide knowledge of ridiculous trivia.
04:11My hubby, bless him,
04:12doesn't like sitting next to me
04:14when I watch quizzes
04:15because I'll go...
04:17The answer's such and such.
04:19And he gets bruised.
04:22Hello, everyone!
04:25Hello!
04:27Hey, how we doing?
04:29Good, thanks.
04:30Now, listen, we can all name hundreds of geniuses
04:33from the North East and Scotland.
04:35There's Alexander Graham Bell,
04:37John Logie Baird,
04:38Anton Deck.
04:39Yes.
04:40But are any of you fit enough
04:42to stand on the shoulders of those giants?
04:45You don't want me standing on anyone's shoulders.
04:46LAUGHTER
04:47So, listen, are you ready to meet my right-hand genius?
04:54Yes.
04:55Please welcome...
04:56Susie Dent!
04:57CHEERING
04:58Susie!
04:59Lovely to see you!
05:01Lovely to see you!
05:03Yeah!
05:04Welcome!
05:04Now, your teachers may not have recognised your brain power,
05:09even though you may have a very high IQ.
05:13But in this competition,
05:14we're hopefully going to change that.
05:17Now, behind these doors
05:19are some of the most advanced intelligence games
05:21designed with Mensa
05:23on the test that they use to measure IQ.
05:26So, first of all,
05:27you are going to take part in two quick-fire games
05:30that you will have just 12 minutes to complete.
05:33After that, you will work in pairs,
05:36and we will be whittled down to just four players,
05:39and then the final game will determine
05:41who goes through to the final.
05:44Good luck.
05:45And see you later.
05:46Bye!
05:47Everyone else can just leave now with me.
05:51All of a sudden, it becomes real.
05:53Yeah, a bit nervous now.
05:55I know, it's scary.
05:58So, Susie, what were they facing the first round?
06:02First test is about verbal intelligence.
06:05So, there are four sections to this wheel,
06:08and the players have to turn them around
06:10until they make six common words.
06:14The second test is all about pattern recognition.
06:17Two tiles have been placed incorrectly,
06:19so they need to identify
06:21the correct logical visual sequence
06:24and then swap around the two tiles
06:26until things are lined up correctly.
06:28Oh, and with the clock ticking,
06:29that is pressure.
06:33So, what about all you guys?
06:34What do you do?
06:34Oh, we have a family restaurant.
06:36Oh, nice.
06:36A Greek restaurant.
06:37Do you smash a lot of plates?
06:38It depends how much Greek wine
06:40the customers drink, basically.
06:41Right, right, right, okay.
06:43And then we've got twins.
06:44They're going to university this year,
06:45so all changes.
06:47This is a big year for me
06:48with the boys leaving.
06:51There's a woman who's been a wife
06:52and had the two kids and devoted a lot of my life
06:55to household chores and looking after other people.
06:59The real me that was around before they were born,
07:02it's hard to remember her.
07:06That can make me sad sometimes.
07:09Family came along, and then the business came along,
07:12and then it's kind of 20 years has skipped past,
07:15and I'm suddenly 44.
07:20Selena!
07:20Go on, Selena!
07:21Go on, Selena!
07:23Restaurant manager Selena
07:25is first to face the quickfire round.
07:29I'm ready to find out
07:31who I am when I'm not the waitress and mother.
07:36Selena, let's see how she does with this one,
07:38because two very different skills required here,
07:41so you're going to need to be pretty balanced
07:43in your brain power.
07:55Rotate the wheels until all of the letters align
07:57to create six common words of four letters each
08:00when you finish moving to the next room.
08:04Okay, just stop and think a minute.
08:06I spot there's a K as one of the last letters,
08:11so I'm thinking that's an uncommon letter,
08:13so I'm going to start with that.
08:15So the only thing before K could be an S or an R.
08:19Good.
08:19So the inner circle has got a K in it,
08:23and it's got a P in it.
08:24Yeah.
08:24Not many words end in K,
08:26so I would look for that one first,
08:27and then everything else might slot into place.
08:31I'm thinking you can have no double Ks,
08:33no double Rs, and things like that,
08:34and just discount what it couldn't be.
08:37Okay, so there can't be an R and an R.
08:41There could be an RK, there could be an SS.
08:44Lark.
08:46Some of the words will be spelt out,
08:49looking as if they're correct,
08:50but then the others won't match.
08:53So there are some real red herrings
08:56and some real distractions here.
08:57Door.
08:59No.
09:03Dark door, loud, trap, fast, bust.
09:06Yes!
09:07Well done.
09:08Amazing.
09:09Yeah.
09:10Super speedy.
09:11That sounds right.
09:12I feel quite confident that it's correct.
09:15Now she needs to quickly move on to the next.
09:20Okay.
09:22Two of the tiles have been placed incorrectly.
09:24Complete the mosaic sequence by swapping these two tiles.
09:28Press the stop button to finish the test.
09:30Okay.
09:31Well, three blue flowery things.
09:35I start by having a look if there's something really obvious,
09:38which there is not.
09:39Mmm.
09:41These are the most simple ones.
09:43These tiles are giving me Greek taverna vibes.
09:46I'll have two massacas and a bottle of ouzo, one straw.
09:50I'm guessing they might add together, maybe?
09:53She's on the right lines.
09:54Some of these sequences are already correct,
09:56and they will give you the clue.
09:59This is that one and that one added together.
10:01I can see that different tiles will add up together
10:05to make other tiles,
10:06but my brain is just not clicking into which one is correct.
10:09So the one that has everything is that one,
10:13but that doesn't make any sense, although.
10:16Mmm.
10:18I'm feeling a little bit panicky.
10:21I'm aware there's a clock ticking.
10:23Oh, well done.
10:30That one, that one, and that one added together.
10:32That way would make sense.
10:34Oh, look.
10:46She's got it right.
10:47I think that's okay.
10:49Amazing.
10:50Yeah.
10:50This is a tough one, isn't it?
10:52It is a tough one.
10:54So do you see, if you take the top left,
10:56you've got the star.
10:57Going down, you'll have the space in which the star fits,
11:00and then you'll have the whole picture at the bottom.
11:02And left to right, the third one is the sum of the first two.
11:06Ah.
11:08Yeah.
11:09I'm happy with that.
11:10What brought you here, then?
11:18Just a lot of things, like, getting called, like, dumb and an idiot.
11:21Really?
11:22Oh, no.
11:22Yeah.
11:23People kind of judge me based on how I look.
11:26I think I've experienced being underestimated, like, as a woman in, just, like, in jobs and by, like, friends and family and in lots of different settings.
11:35I don't have much common sense, but, like, my friends, like, say that I'm so ditzy.
11:41I wanted to do this to then show, like, a 14-year-old me that you can do it.
11:49So as a bloke, we get eccentric.
11:51You get ditzy.
11:52That's kind of unkind.
11:54Little do they know.
12:00Right, let's see what the other players can do.
12:03This is John.
12:08He's sort of looking round like he wants to buy the place, doesn't he?
12:10He's like, hmm, I'll take it.
12:13Creates six common words.
12:15Of four letters each.
12:16I think I'm going to put that there.
12:19I see the letter K.
12:20I think that's a good place to start.
12:22Four letter words.
12:23This could be dangerous for a priest, couldn't it?
12:26Oh, man, he'd be good for Movember, wouldn't he?
12:29I've got no testosterone.
12:31I have to start in April.
12:32Come on, you're doing this for Manchester.
12:35Oh, it's struggling here, aren't we?
12:37She's gone over halfway through and she hasn't done this.
12:41Dark horse fast trap.
12:42Yes.
12:43Well done, Jess.
12:44I'm just going to lock this in.
12:46It's not right, look.
12:47She didn't complete that one, but she locked it in.
12:49Complete the mosaic sequence.
12:51By swapping two tiles.
12:53What is that?
12:54Come on, Graham.
12:57Nope.
12:58Red one.
12:59Now, here she reminds me of.
13:04Me?
13:05Yes, those cheekbones, those glasses.
13:07This could be a mirror.
13:09And this one, that one, that one, that one.
13:11That one, that one, that one.
13:12Yes.
13:13Doing both games in two minutes 44.
13:17Remarkable.
13:17Brings a whole new meaning to Godspeed.
13:22John's superpowers.
13:24It seemed too easy.
13:27Wow.
13:284-11.
13:29How about that?
13:31Ah!
13:34No, no, no.
13:36No.
13:37I don't think it's right.
13:39That is it.
13:40Oh, yes.
13:40Now, we need to press the button.
13:44Go, go, go.
13:45Yeah.
13:45Leave the feng shui.
13:49Oh, this is agonising.
13:51He's hovering.
13:51Ahmed.
13:55Yes!
13:57He kept us hanging there, didn't he?
13:59He did.
14:01I think sometimes it doesn't matter how often people tell you.
14:05You're very intelligent.
14:07Internally, you don't necessarily believe them.
14:09And you think, eh.
14:09Yeah.
14:10Who have you got working for you at home?
14:13So, my dad put me forward.
14:16And I honestly don't think I'm a genius.
14:19The final player to attempt the quickfire round is 45-year-old Andy.
14:24I've never been unemployed.
14:25I've always gone from job to job and been sought after in some cases.
14:30So, for the first time in my life at 45, I'm finding myself unemployed.
14:33I'm finding it really difficult.
14:35Cost of living-wise, I've just had to move back in with my mum.
14:37And the last job I applied for, there were 841 other applicants.
14:40It's frustrating, and I think that sort of affects your self-worth.
14:46My confidence is gone.
14:49There's a nagging voice in my head that keeps saying, like, I'm not good enough.
14:53I guess that's why I'm here as well, part of, like, a crossroads.
14:59Andy!
15:00Hello, Andy!
15:00Nice to roll on, Andy.
15:01You're going.
15:02Good luck, buddy.
15:03Come on, Andy!
15:04Come on!
15:04Doing this competition, I want to show myself that I have got a bit of intelligence
15:09and I can achieve things, and maybe that can improve my self-worth.
15:14This is Andy.
15:16He sort of just wants a bit of validation here.
15:19It will buoy him up if he needs it.
15:25So, I'll take the reels.
15:28Take the reels.
15:34The letters are not moving.
15:37I'm thinking I'm lost.
15:39I've got no idea what to do.
15:43Come on, Andy.
15:48This doubt kicks in.
15:52You're not going to do this in time, and 12 minutes isn't enough.
15:56Oh, don't get disheartened.
15:58You've got this.
15:59Come on.
16:00Come on, Bryn.
16:19School was a funny time for me.
16:20I don't know how was it for you.
16:22Well, yeah, I got expelled in year nine.
16:24Oh, wow.
16:25Yeah.
16:25I pinched the art teachers' bunch of coos.
16:27And then during the school holidays,
16:30I just went and let myself in the school
16:31and took all the chocolate out of the tuk trot.
16:33I just...
16:3412 hopefuls from the north-eastern Scotland
16:37are taking on a series of games
16:40based on the tests Mensa use to measure intelligence.
16:48Come on, Andy, you've got this.
16:5145-year-old Andy is the last player to attempt Wheel of Words.
16:56Yes.
16:58Yes.
16:59Yes, he's got it.
16:59Oh.
17:01Things start to click.
17:02I'm thinking, I can do this.
17:04I can do this.
17:05Dog.
17:06Nope.
17:06Let's try it last.
17:11Trap.
17:12Awesome.
17:12Fast.
17:13Oh, my goodness.
17:14No way.
17:15That was so fast.
17:17Complete the mosaic sequence by swapping these two tiles.
17:22How quickly his eyes are roving, those tiles?
17:25It starts basic, but it adds something each time.
17:29Yes.
17:29That's it.
17:34Yes.
17:35Wow.
17:35Yeah.
17:38Chop myself.
17:39Yeah.
17:42That was fast.
17:43Well done, Andy.
17:44Absolutely.
17:44Yay.
17:44Yay.
17:49Oh, buddy.
17:52Question, Andy.
17:52Are you happy?
17:55It's done.
17:56You can kind of relax a little bit now.
17:58You don't know that you're going to go through.
17:59It's kind of like one of those, did you get the job?
18:03Yeah.
18:03It's like, yeah.
18:04Just what the results are now.
18:05Yeah, we'll be in touch.
18:07Hi, guys.
18:09Hi.
18:10What did you think of the games?
18:12I think we might be saying goodbye, Alan.
18:14Don't say that.
18:16How can I lose my sister from another mister?
18:19Absolutely.
18:20But we do have to lose some of you, OK?
18:24So, in no particular order, this is the people going through.
18:27And the final person going through is...
18:57Andy.
18:59Andy.
19:03That, of course, means the people going home are Melanie,
19:07Graham, Joe and Debs.
19:11Oh, I'm sorry.
19:13I know I could have done better.
19:16Come here, Debs.
19:18I ran out of brain.
19:19You ran out of brain.
19:20I ran out of brain.
19:21Oh, Debs, you ran out of brain.
19:23But I found my tribe.
19:25Debs, come on, love.
19:26Your lorry's double parked.
19:27Oh, thank you.
19:29To come across anyone who is of a similar brain level to me,
19:36similar ideas, thoughts and feelings is rare.
19:39To have a whole room of them is just astonishing.
19:45And it makes you feel understood.
19:47It's quite a warm, fluffy feeling.
19:49I like it.
19:50Can I get some advice from you guys?
19:52Yeah, more confidence in yourself.
19:54What?
19:54Make it through.
19:56I feel very lucky and quite proud of myself as well, to be honest with you.
19:59So, yeah.
20:00Right, you lot, you need to go home, eat some oily fish and rest those brains because things are going to get tougher.
20:10It's day two in Genius HQ and just eight players remain.
20:23Hiya, Dad.
20:24So, you know this thing you pushed me into?
20:26Yeah, I'm really enjoying it.
20:28Good.
20:28I'm enjoying it.
20:29Cheers for pushing me.
20:31How are you feeling about today, then?
20:33Just scared.
20:34Scared of.
20:35Not doing well.
20:35Hi, guys.
20:38Hiya.
20:38Now, for the next game, you're going to be in pairs.
20:42You can pick which pairs you want to be in.
20:45The one who was quickest in the quickfire round will pick first.
20:50So, Nick, that's you.
20:55I was really excited to see that I finished top of the leaderboard for the first round,
20:58and I was kind of daunted at having to pick.
21:02Jess.
21:03Aw.
21:03That makes me feel real nice, yeah?
21:04Oh, that's good.
21:06Yeah, wonderful.
21:07I got pink first.
21:10I mean, that never happened to me in PE.
21:12Never.
21:14The next quickest is John.
21:17Right, who are you going to pick?
21:21Andy.
21:22Andy, OK.
21:25Selina.
21:26I love you, but I'm trying to make sure all the girls get a chance to get through girls to the finals.
21:30I love this theory.
21:31I would like to get a girl through to the finals, so...
21:34Out of four teams, there's a girl on three teams, so statistically, like, there'll be a girl in the final now.
21:40Yeah.
21:40Oh, have a day off, love.
21:41I know you're a genius, but you're even thinking tactically.
21:47When you pick it, I love it.
21:49You're on the right show.
21:50OK, great.
21:51I'm going to go with...
21:53Ahmad.
21:54So that means Jodie and Simon.
21:57Are you happy about this?
21:58I am, indeed.
21:59It's giving me gladiator vibes.
22:01I love how to feel it.
22:03Contenders ready!
22:04So you're in your teams, the two fastest pairs will be staying, the two slowest pairs, sorry, babes, you're going home.
22:14So you're feeling OK this morning?
22:30Yeah.
22:31I feel very good now.
22:32In Genius HQ, the remaining eight players have now paired up to face the second round together.
22:40Don't let me down.
22:42You said you work in...
22:44I mean, I work in retail.
22:46Do your parents ever say anything about that?
22:49Day in, day out, yeah.
22:50Really?
22:50Yeah, of course.
22:51My parents are doctors, my sister's a dentist, brother, he works as a consultant.
22:57I'm a bit behind in that sense, I think.
23:01I've always felt a bit isolated, not being able to keep up.
23:04You know, you're kind of at the back of the pack.
23:06My dad's still all with me.
23:08Like, you'd make a great doctor.
23:09They'd both just say to me, I'm just like, guys, just get it through your head.
23:12It's never going to happen.
23:15I came here to prove to my family that I'm not a black sheep.
23:18I do believe that I have potential.
23:20I just need to, I guess, find it.
23:27Susie, I'm not going to lie, this pairs round looks baffling.
23:31So the pairs are going to split up so that one stands on either side of the puzzle.
23:35There are eight words to figure out here.
23:38They've been given their definitions and their anagrams, and they need to pair them up.
23:42But, of course, there's a catch.
23:44Sometimes both definition and anagram are on the same side.
23:48When they work out the matching clues, they will pull a wire to link the two.
23:54But the final question is the killer one, I think.
23:56How many triangles have been formed?
23:59There's a time limit of 15 minutes.
24:02Oh, that's tough.
24:04Ahmed and Selena.
24:06You must connect the wires from each anagram to its matching description.
24:13Once you've connected the wires, you must work out how many triangles big and small are contained within the frame.
24:18That's me.
24:19Yeah.
24:20Okay.
24:20I'm immediately scanning both sides.
24:23I can see there's anagrams.
24:25I can see the description, a vibrant pinkish-purple color that's more vibrant than pink, but warmer than purple.
24:31My eyes dart to the top left.
24:33Fuchsia.
24:34That was really quick.
24:36Two refracting telescopes mounted side by side.
24:39Binoculars, probably.
24:40Wow!
24:40In my head, I was thinking, I'm glad I chose him because we're on the same wavelength here.
24:44I've got input device that allows users to type characters and perform functions, so like keyboard or something like that, I guess.
24:51Oh, I've got keyboard on this side.
24:52Oh, you've got keyboard on your side?
24:53Yeah, I thought they were going to be opposite.
24:55Oh, they're racing through this one.
24:56This is impressive.
24:57A small two-winged insect with long legs and a soft body covered by a mess.
25:00Mosquito, I've got, yeah, I've got mosquito.
25:02Okay.
25:02Oh, my goodness.
25:03He's not mucking about, is he?
25:05I've got a soft silvery white alkali metal.
25:08Oh, wait, lithium is alkali metal, isn't it?
25:10Lithium, yeah, there you go.
25:11Well done, Selena.
25:13Good, isn't it?
25:13A deep cylindrical vessel with a flat bottom and a semi-circular bale for collecting, carrying.
25:20Bucket.
25:21Bucket, yeah.
25:21Yeah.
25:22Oh, she's so impressive.
25:24A soft, usually cloth bag filled with a yielding material.
25:28Oh, cushion.
25:29Well done.
25:30He just looks at those anagrams and knows the answers.
25:34Where's cushion come from?
25:35It's from the French.
25:36Cuisant.
25:38Oh, cuisson.
25:39Not the thing you have for breakfast.
25:40I know the difference between a cushion and a croissant.
25:44This croissant's got loads of feathers in it.
25:47One anagram left.
25:49S-T-A-C-I-A-T-W-O.
25:54Waist coat?
25:56Yes.
25:56I'm actually thinking of going to a restaurant.
25:59If she brings the food out as quick as she does these pursels, wow.
26:03Okay.
26:04The next stage is that we have to count the triangles.
26:07Should we just be quiet for a minute and just see what we get?
26:09Let's analyze first, yeah?
26:11But what does this test?
26:12Good point.
26:13Diagrammatic visualization, this one.
26:15The best way in is to identify the different sizes of triangles and then count them.
26:21Three, four, five.
26:23Yeah, that's fine.
26:24I'm thinking, let's count the small triangles, then middle, then bigger.
26:30I'm torn between 11 and 12.
26:33Well, I think I found 12 so far.
26:35Yeah?
26:35I said, let's go with 12.
26:37I'm very confident she knows the answer.
26:39She's really, really smart.
26:40Yes, that's the correct answer.
26:44Wow.
26:45Bravo.
26:46They were a great team.
26:47It was fun.
26:48Like, I almost kind of want to do another one.
26:50I know.
26:51So, Alan, there are seven big triangles.
26:55And then five smaller ones.
26:59Add them together and you get 12.
27:02It's time for the other three pairs to find out whether a problem shared is a problem halved.
27:08Yeah.
27:08And half the players, Alan, are going to go after the next game.
27:12We're going to go from eight to four.
27:14Yeah, I know what half is, but thanks for explaining it.
27:17I was feeling quite nervous, but Nick's quite, like, loud and confident.
27:21I think that might help in the teamwork game.
27:23He just might not understand my accent, so.
27:26Jess sort of gets the same kind of stuff I do.
27:30But just because you're beautiful, they think you're stupid.
27:33Aw.
27:33An input device that allows users to type characters and perform functions.
27:39I think I have keyboard here.
27:40Yes.
27:41Well done.
27:41Do you have a description up there?
27:43Jandy.
27:44Jandy?
27:44Yeah.
27:45Andy and John.
27:46Aw.
27:46They've got, like, a bromance going on.
27:48B-Y-K-O-D.
27:50B-Y-K.
27:51There's too much information there.
27:53We're trying to share too much information.
27:54A soft, usually cloth bag.
27:56Oh, a hessian bag, yeah.
27:57Hessian, maybe?
27:58No.
27:59A vibrant, prinkish, purple colour.
28:01Fuchsia?
28:02Fuchsia, perfect.
28:03Well, that was fast.
28:05Two refracting telescopes mounted side by side.
28:07Yeah.
28:08Binoculars.
28:09Burnt, mate.
28:10If I was to try and pronounce it, choifs, stachyart, whoa.
28:15That does not help.
28:16No.
28:18Humietail?
28:19Yeah, you're right.
28:19It doesn't help, does it?
28:20T-T-U-X-E-T-U-N-A.
28:23Waistcoat?
28:24W-U-N waistcoat.
28:25Yeah, that's it.
28:26That's the last one.
28:27That's so fast, but now they've got to do the triangles.
28:29Are you better at counting triangles?
28:31I've got faith in you.
28:32Simon!
28:33How many did you get?
28:34Seven.
28:35What did you all get?
28:36I'd be nine.
28:37Each time we're counting them, we're coming up with a different number.
28:40Eight.
28:42Ten.
28:43I got ten, then I got eleven, then I got twelve.
28:44If we lose, we lose together, but I trust you.
28:46I don't trust me.
28:47Eleven?
28:47It's all good.
28:50Oh, wait, that's seven.
28:52Seven.
28:52Yeah.
28:53Plus five, so we'll get twelve.
28:54Yeah.
28:55Ready, mate, go for it.
28:55Yes.
28:56Yes.
28:59That went hard, wasn't it?
29:01Well...
29:02Well done.
29:04The anagrams will haunt me for life.
29:05You look like two naughty boys who've done something really cheekily amazing and are desperate
29:16to tell us.
29:19I'm afraid of letting John down, but I managed to do it pretty quickly, I think.
29:23I hope.
29:24Hey, everyone, how we doing?
29:27Oh, good, good.
29:28Kids.
29:28So you've been crossing wires, well, I hope now you're crossing fingers.
29:34In no particular order, the first pair going through to the final round is...
29:40Selena and Ahmed.
29:44Well done, guys!
29:46Well done, guys!
29:49The next pair going through is...
29:52Nick and Jess.
29:59Oh, mate, well done!
30:02Well done!
30:04That was awesome, well done!
30:07Well done, guys.
30:07Oh, buddy.
30:09That, of course, means we need to say goodbye to Simon and Joe and Andy and John.
30:15You have done so well, but it was the speed that let you down.
30:21You've got to say your goodbyes.
30:22All right, nice, bye-bye.
30:24Oh, how are you?
30:25Oh, how are you?
30:26Oh, how are you?
30:26I'm happy.
30:27You must be sorry that you did.
30:28No, don't worry about you.
30:29Yeah, it's nice, yeah.
30:30I doubt myself constantly, and I'll be honest with you, for the past couple of days,
30:35it's disappeared as it went on.
30:38I've had a brilliant experience with these people, incredible.
30:42I'm going to go home and thank my dad for pushing me into this.
30:47How much more nerve-wracking than I thought?
30:49Yes.
30:50I had plans to work tonight.
30:52I wasn't expecting to get this far, so now I'm going to have to call and rearrange the restaurant
30:56a little bit to make sure that I can keep going.
30:59Hey, QD.
31:12That was a lot tougher.
31:14I'm feeling more and more confident, like, the further we're getting through.
31:18In genius HQ, four players remain, but only three will make it through to our finals in Oxford.
31:27Sweetheart.
31:28Oh, thank you.
31:29That's the name of the game we're about to play.
31:32So, players begin by studying the triangle of Turkish Delight.
31:38So, they have to take in as much information as they can.
31:42Turkish Delight is the art department on a day off.
31:44There are questions in the next room.
31:47They have to answer those correctly and then move on yet again.
31:51And in the final room, which is all about verbal reasoning, there are five sweet jars.
31:54On each is a clue, and the answer to that clue will be the name of a sweet.
31:59And they have 30 minutes on the clock.
32:05Do you think intelligence gets like a nature versus nurture?
32:09It's an interesting question, isn't it?
32:10I mean, I think getting the input when you're young from parents, like, I think that makes a big difference.
32:15Yeah, I didn't really, like, kind of have that as a kid.
32:18Were you, like, self-motivated?
32:19Yeah, I guess, but it came from the, kind of, shows and things I'd watch or, like, the games I'd play.
32:26Yeah.
32:26It's kind of hard when it feels, like, gate-keeped in a way for poor people, like.
32:31I know, yeah.
32:31Yeah.
32:32I think, like, poorer people tend to get less opportunities and time to actually start learning and then showing that they're intelligent.
32:40I feel like there's a lot of untapped potential in the world.
32:44Definitely.
32:45As well, like, being women.
32:47Do you find that men kind of, like, judge you?
32:50Oh, yeah, definitely.
32:51Yeah.
32:5327-year-old Jess is the first player to face the final round.
32:58I think if I went through to the next stage, it would prove people wrong since I'd be called, like, dumb and an idiot in the past and, like, you know, over mean things.
33:06And it would just raise my self-confidence.
33:17Oh, Jess is a real smart cookie.
33:19Yeah.
33:20Let's see how she does with this one.
33:21I see sweets in a coloured order, and I'm trying to memorise what's there.
33:43She has studied.
33:49Select the jar that displays the correct colour pattern of the Turkish Delight.
33:56Green, yellow, blue.
33:59Green, yellow, blue.
34:00Green, red, yellow.
34:02Yeah.
34:02Yes.
34:04Well done.
34:05Wow.
34:06Quick as.
34:07Select the jar that displays the number of cubes in the Turkish Delight tower.
34:11Oh, God.
34:12This is about spatial reasoning, because you have to imagine the depth of this pile of technology.
34:16Yeah, yeah, yeah.
34:17So you'd count out the sides, wouldn't you?
34:19It's hard, though.
34:20It's an awkward...
34:21It is.
34:21You've got to imagine how far back it goes.
34:23Yeah.
34:23I got a general vibe that it was definitely over 100 isn't 144, like 12 times 12.
34:33I didn't think that would make sense for how the cubes were stacked.
34:37You should go this way.
34:39Correct.
34:39No way.
34:42Wow.
34:44You get the impression she amazes herself.
34:48Work out each puzzle and correctly identify which reads should go into the jar.
34:53Okay.
34:55It seems to be weird puzzles, which isn't my strong suit, so I'm a bit scared.
35:01So A equals Z.
35:03Z equals A.
35:04So working backwards.
35:06Z, Y, W, and Y, Z.
35:10Sure.
35:10It's T.
35:11There you go.
35:11She's got the T.
35:13U is...
35:14Toffee.
35:15Toffee.
35:16Oh!
35:17Toffee.
35:18Well done.
35:19So this is reversing the order of the alphabet.
35:22So A, B, C, D, E, F, G is seven letters from the beginning.
35:26That's T.
35:26It's your seven letters from the end.
35:27It's T.
35:28L will give you O.
35:30And so on.
35:30Yeah.
35:31My neighbours are N, J, O, U.
35:34What am I?
35:36O, N.
35:38My neighbours.
35:39Oh, mint.
35:40Oh!
35:41She just looked at that.
35:42Contains traces of jam, elderflower.
35:46J, J, jelly.
35:48Ooh, jelly.
35:49Very good.
35:50We're looking for a verbal sequence.
35:52Jelly what?
35:52Jelly beans.
35:54I think it's the first letter of each word.
35:57Worms.
35:58Yes.
35:59Oh, wow.
36:00That was impressive.
36:02So jam is J.
36:04Elderflower is E.
36:05Lime, lemon.
36:06Oh, jelly worms.
36:08Jelly worms.
36:09I get it now.
36:11The seven is like an L.
36:19Oh, L.
36:21Oh, lemon.
36:22She makes it look so easy, doesn't she?
36:24Lemon drop.
36:26I like that.
36:28She got that so quickly.
36:30So you'll see there's a number above.
36:32You have to tilt the numbers to certain angles to create letters.
36:36And then you'll be able to spell lemon drop.
36:37That is tough.
36:39What am I?
36:40Squirrel minus question.
36:43What?
36:45Yeah, so that is the trickiest question.
36:49Can I look at the sweets?
36:51Marshmallows.
36:59Licorice.
37:01Yes.
37:02Wow.
37:03I don't understand.
37:04I agree with that.
37:07Well done.
37:09That was amazing verbal reasoning.
37:11So you take two letters out of squirrel.
37:13Squirrel, yeah.
37:14You take the S.
37:15You take the S off.
37:17Take off one of the R's.
37:19Licorice.
37:19The next two players are Nick and Selina.
37:30It means a lot to me to get this far.
37:33Since starting this competition, I've kind of got this like tiny growing dream that when the boys come back home with their degrees, I might have my certificate to say I'm also smart.
37:41I'm just going to go for this one.
37:42I'm just going to go for this one.
37:43I'm just going to go for this one.
37:44Okay, so we've got a green stack.
37:48It's interesting to see how long they study this Turkish delight for.
37:54I'm just going to go.
37:56They have up to a max of five minutes.
37:58Has she gone?
37:59It's super speedy.
38:01The jar that displays the correct color pattern.
38:04Green, yellow, blue.
38:07I'm going to go for this one.
38:10Wow.
38:11Well done, Selina.
38:12That was so fast.
38:13Select the jar that displays the number of cubes in the tower.
38:17It was seven by seven.
38:18I'm going to go.
38:21Okay.
38:22I'm looking at it for a couple of seconds going, that can't be right.
38:25But it is.
38:27Okay.
38:29Super, super skilled.
38:35Correct.
38:36You can now move on to the next string.
38:37He's done it.
38:38Hallelujah.
38:40Contains traces of.
38:41Oh, okay.
38:42So there's letters in there, Nick.
38:43Come on.
38:44Okay.
38:45This is obviously jelly worms.
38:47Obviously, Alan.
38:48I love that.
38:49Obviously.
38:50Jelly worms.
38:51There we go.
38:52My neighbors are.
38:56That's mint.
38:57Spot on.
38:58Look at how she's whizzing through these.
39:00T-U-V-W.
39:01Toffee.
39:03This game is going really well.
39:04I'm looking at the clues and my brain has kind of solved it before I've even, like, thought
39:08about it.
39:09Now we're cooking on gas.
39:12So seven.
39:13Rotate 180 clockwise.
39:16Lemon drop.
39:18That was so fast.
39:20Squirrel.
39:22Minus something something plus O-I-C.
39:25Oh my God.
39:26Why is this not obvious?
39:28Licorice.
39:29Where does licorice come from?
39:31Licorice?
39:32Yeah.
39:33I've completely forgotten where licorice comes from.
39:35Oh, you are an idiot.
39:36Come on, Nick.
39:38Take out the Q and the U, because they might not be that easy.
39:42Okay, just take a breath.
39:43This is silly.
39:44I'm stressing.
39:45Oh, I'd want her to fall at the last hurdle.
39:47Oh God, that's so annoying.
39:50My mind is just blank.
39:53Oh.
39:54Licorice.
39:55Yes, yes, yes.
39:56He's done it.
39:57He's done it.
39:58Oh, I see.
40:01Even if I kick myself on this one, I'd rather just try for the tie.
40:06What's she gone for?
40:09Chocolate.
40:10Chocolate.
40:11Aw.
40:13It was all really easy, like, really easy until just one blank.
40:19It's just a bit frustrating, but I'm fine.
40:22I'll be fine.
40:24It's a lot of emotions.
40:27Um.
40:30Just because I didn't think I would get this far, and now I got this far, I was like,
40:34it would be nice to just do the final step.
40:40That was a toughie.
40:41Are you confident you'd be one of the three?
40:43No.
40:44No, I'm not confident.
40:45Really?
40:49Last to play is phone shop assistant Ahmed.
40:54Doing this experience has definitely boosted my confidence.
40:57It's showing me I am capable of more and I can actually achieve more.
41:01I would really like to go to the finals and potentially even win.
41:07Ahmed, let's see how he gets on.
41:09He was extraordinary in the Pairs round.
41:11He was.
41:12He's from a family of high flyers, and I think he really wants to prove he's just as intelligent as them.
41:18Okay.
41:19Select the jar that displays the correct colour pattern of the Turkish delight.
41:26I think it's this one.
41:28You're so quick.
41:29That was very quick.
41:31Select the jar that displays the number of cubes in the Turkish delight tower.
41:35Yes.
41:36Yes.
41:37Yes.
41:38That was one of the fastest we've had.
41:39Yes.
41:40Okay.
41:41Contains traces of a jam, elderflower, lime, lemon, serum, musy, marzbrine, mint.
41:42That could be anything.
41:43A sim.
41:44What's this?
41:45What's this?
41:46Uh, what's he doing with the till?
41:47No, probably not.
41:48Okay.
41:49Squirtle minus question mark.
41:50Plus OIC.
41:51I have an immediate mind blank.
41:52It may as well be French.
41:54Rotate 180 clockwise.
41:55Am I supposed to rotate myself clockwise?
41:56I have an immediate mind blank.
41:59It may as well be French.
42:01Rotate 180 clockwise.
42:03Can I rotate the clock wise?
42:04Yeah, I can't flip vertically, no.
42:05Oh, wow.
42:06Come on.
42:07Okay.
42:08I'm going.
42:09Let me paint the clock.
42:10What's this?
42:11Okay.
42:12I'm going.
42:13Let me open up.
42:15I'm going.
42:16Let me open up.
42:17That's right.
42:18That's right.
42:19So, what's this?
42:20I'd like to...
42:21That's okay.
42:23I've got different points.
42:25I'm so i'm going.
42:26Let me pose.
42:27If what's this question mark?
42:30What's this?
42:31Oh, Ahmed. He's not quite sure what he's supposed to do.
42:37It's not from any of these jars.
42:40Okay, you're not supposed to go back to those jars, Ahmed.
42:45Aye, aye, aye, aye. You can't try before you buy.
42:50What? Ahmed.
42:56Breathe, Ahmed. He's panicking, isn't he?
43:01I'm opening all these lids, and they aren't giving me any hints.
43:08Well, we lose points for not being able to open this.
43:12Oh, no, don't drop the jar.
43:16There's no logic here. There's no strategy here.
43:20I have no idea.
43:21Oh, I think the pressure's getting to him. Do you think he's crumbling?
43:24Yay.
43:28Turkish Delight.
43:31Oh.
43:35Licorice?
43:36No way.
43:37He's got licorice, right?
43:38Yeah.
43:39So I think he just took a punt on that.
43:44No idea with this one.
43:46Oh.
43:47That was so bad.
43:48I found some of it impossible.
43:49Do you feel like your brain is burnt out, like, now at this moment?
44:01It is just...
44:030% capacity now, that's it.
44:04Battery is dead.
44:05You feel like there's just a bit of grey mush knocking about between your ears, yeah?
44:08Grey mush?
44:09I was thinking, like, air more like that.
44:11That's my little clever clog.
44:14Oh.
44:15Not so clever.
44:16I know.
44:17Who thought standing in a sweet shop could be so terrifying?
44:19Oh, yeah.
44:20Yeah.
44:21The top three players who did the best in the game and going through to the final are...
44:29Jess.
44:31Well done, Jess!
44:33Jess!
44:34Are you sure?
44:35Yes, you're the highest ranking.
44:38I'm going to the final.
44:41The second player going through is...
44:46Selena.
44:47There we go.
44:48What?
44:49There we go.
44:50How?
44:51Two girls?
44:52Yes.
44:53Oh, my God.
44:54And the third and final person going through is...
45:00Nick!
45:01Well done, Nick.
45:05But that, of course, means we've got to say goodbye to Ahmed.
45:09And you sort of knew that, didn't you, really?
45:11Sort of.
45:12I want to see what you did there!
45:14I immediately knew that!
45:15Listen, I'll let you say your goodbyes, okay?
45:18Yeah.
45:19Thank you, Ahmed.
45:20Thank you very much.
45:21Bless you, buddy.
45:22Thank you for being my teammate.
45:24Thank you for having me.
45:25I think for me to come out of my comfort zone and to make it almost to the finals,
45:29it's quite an achievement in itself, so I definitely do feel like the world is my oyster.
45:35I'm going to the final.
45:36Yeah, yeah.
45:37Oh, my God.
45:38I think anyone that's called me, like, Bill Moore, an idiot, was wrong now, so...
45:45Yeah.
45:46Can we have a hug?
45:47Oh, my word.
45:49They don't know it yet, but by the end of the competition, two of the finalists will discover they have IQs, which apparently rivals Stephen Hawking.
46:00That's like mine and Susie's combined.
46:02I'm still a bit in shock that I'm here.
46:05It's meant so much to come and do this, because even though the real me is still the mother and wife, it's making me feel like I have potential to be more than that in my life and be more fulfilled.
46:15I'm literally still processing it now and thinking, it doesn't feel real.
46:21With this talented trio joining the ranks, we're now halfway to finding our 12 finalists.
46:28I'm a carpenter.
46:29Laffitt bathroom, so we should be kindred spirits, young man.
46:38Next time...
46:40That is a piece of cake.
46:42Our next 12 hopefuls are drawn from the south-west all the way up to Wales.
46:48She's not come here to play, she's come here to slay.
46:52Boom.
46:53Passion fruit?
46:54Passion fruit.
46:55Oh, you're a legend.
46:56Oh, Alex, how'd you get that?
46:58Oh, my goodness.
47:00Are you finding it all a bit emotional doing these puzzles and games?
47:04I think it might be.
47:11To apply for a potential future series of Secret Genius, go to Channel 4, Take Part.
47:31Bye.
