00:01I'm Jane MacDonald.
00:03Let's go exploring!
00:05And I'm on an extraordinary transglobal trip of a lifetime.
00:09Oh wow, look!
00:10From pole to pole.
00:12It is quite brutal here, I'm not gonna lie.
00:15I just love seeing different places, different cultures, different ways of life.
00:21Whoa, look at this!
00:23I'm being invited in to spend a little bit of time with some special people along the way.
00:29That is such a different taste.
00:31And a very good morning to you.
00:34I've already traveled halfway around the world.
00:37It is weird going from the wilderness of the Antarctica.
00:41What the hell are we doing out here?
00:44Down the islands of South America.
00:47But it's not next day delivery here.
00:49And finishing in Rio.
00:50Oh my god, you actually feel like you're flying.
00:54I am so blessed to have been able to make this journey.
00:58It's wonderful.
00:59Oh, that's lovely.
01:00And I can't wait for my next big adventure.
01:05Bella Italia!
01:07Bellissimo!
01:08Mwah!
01:09After the wonders of Antarctica and the beauty of South America, on this leg of my pole to
01:23pole journey, I'm in the med!
01:25I've flown to Athens in Greece to meet my new yacht, Emerald Saqqara.
01:30I'll head through the Corinth Canal to reach Italy.
01:34I'll explore the port town of Gallipoli, in the south.
01:38The islands of Sicily and Capri and finally sail to Sorrento, the gateway to the Amalfi Coast.
01:44The journey begins with some nifty nautical navigation.
01:54So this is the little shortcut, which takes us from Greece on the way to Italy.
01:59I can't believe we're going to get through that little...
02:03See that gap there?
02:05It's like a B road.
02:06It's like we're on the M62.
02:08We're going to turn off onto a B road and we're going to make a shortcut to M1.
02:14You have to get up early to do this, but it's worth it.
02:23And everybody's up, everybody's in the same boat, and we're all here to watch this passing
02:28through the Corinth Canal.
02:32Exciting!
02:37At less than 25 metres wide, it's one of the world's narrowest canals navigable by ships.
02:43My yacht, at 16 metres wide, is carefully guided through by the canal pilots.
02:52Their vital local knowledge ensures safe passage for around 11,000 ships a year.
02:59This little bit here can cut out over 400 miles.
03:04I mean, that's a pretty good shortcut, isn't it?
03:08While the idea was hatched in the 7th century BC,
03:11the four-mile man-made channel wasn't completed until 1893.
03:17And it took the invention of dynamite to get the job done.
03:20Morning.
03:26Now, it's Sunday morning and it's really early.
03:29And if I lived there, I would be happy if that went off this time every Sunday.
03:34Can you imagine that?
03:35Here we go.
03:36It was very, very narrow.
03:37Thought, one, we're never going to get through that.
03:38And I also thought, we're going uphill.
03:39Because it was an optical illusion of the ship going up.
03:56Isn't it amazing, this?
04:05You feel like you could touch the sides.
04:09Thankfully, you can't.
04:11But it looks as if you can.
04:13The rock walls rise up to around 90 metres above sea level.
04:22Just wish you'd step back from the edge.
04:25I love the ship this size because everybody gets to know each other in the bar usually.
04:34And then you sort of all get up at the same time and you all experience the same things.
04:40And then you talk about it in the bar later and it's just great.
04:43It's just great.
04:44It's just great.
04:49For me and the other 99 guests on board, the tricky manoeuvre's been super smooth.
04:54Thanks to Staff Captain Alessandra and the rest of the crew.
04:59This is just incredible and not many people know about this, do they?
05:03Yes, that's true.
05:04So, for the guests who are, let's say, from the USA or from Australia,
05:08they don't even know about this spot in Europe.
05:11And this is kind of unique.
05:12How many times have you done this?
05:14Actually, this is my fifth or sixth time.
05:17Really?
05:18Yeah.
05:19And it's still as exciting?
05:20It's even for us who's going through, like, you know, several times through the year.
05:23But, yeah, it's a unique experience, definitely.
05:25I must admit, that sunshine bouncing off that colour is so flattering.
05:32Yeah, it is.
05:34We don't need beauty lights.
05:36We've got nature's beauty lights here, which is very helpful.
05:41It is.
05:42Not for you, darling.
05:43You're all right.
05:44But for me, it's very helpful.
05:46I sound like I'm chatting him up, and I'm not chatting him up.
05:49I'm flirting terribly with you.
05:50I do apologise.
05:51All right.
05:52I'm going up on the verge.
05:53I think I scared him off.
05:54And we're through this 19th century engineering marvel, and in under an hour.
06:04I'm always impressed when things work, and the Greeks obviously did this man-made, and that's a feat of genius.
06:17400-odd miles.
06:18400-odd miles, it's cut out.
06:22Whoever came up with that deserves a medal.
06:26Next, I sail to Gallipoli.
06:36Hello, and good morning.
06:38To feed my hunger for travel.
06:40I've had many pink prawns, but I've never had a purple prawn.
06:44And go behind the scenes on the ultimate mafia movie in Sicily.
06:48Oh, this is gorgeous.
06:50Look at this place.
06:52Wow.
07:15Gallipoli, Gallipoli.
07:16Hello, and good morning.
07:21Safely through the Corinth Canal, the marvellous Mediterranean leg of my pole-to-pole adventure continues north.
07:29So, we have arrived in Italy.
07:31And look, it looks a bit like Tobermory.
07:33Come on, let's be honest here.
07:35All lovely little coloured houses, fishing village, typically Italian.
07:42Oh, it just makes you feel good.
07:45I think we should go and explore.
07:47Come on.
07:50Flanked by the Ionian Sea, Gallipoli sits on the Salento Peninsula, in the Puglia region of southern Italy.
07:57The bit that looks like the heel of a boot.
08:00I've enlisted a local guide to show me the best bits, and I'm meeting him by the ancient fountain.
08:10Oh, God, you've got to be Andrea.
08:12That's me.
08:13Hello, I'm James.
08:14Welcome, James, to Puglia, the heel of Italy.
08:17As you know, food in Italy is very important.
08:20So, I brought you the pasticciotto.
08:22Oh.
08:23It's a typical breakfast pastry from here.
08:25Thank you very much.
08:26Yeah, you can taste it if you want.
08:27I'm going in.
08:31This is gorgeous.
08:32Yeah.
08:33It is made with custards and almonds.
08:36Oh, wow.
08:37Yes, exactly.
08:38That is stunning.
08:39That's my favourite pasturing.
08:41It's really good.
08:42This is a beautiful place to me.
08:44What is this?
08:45This is the ancient fountain.
08:47Some people believe it was built during the 3rd century by the Greek Empire.
08:52But recent studies have suggested it was built during the Renaissance era.
08:58Ah.
09:00Gallipoli is a tale of two cities, a modern district on the mainland and the historic old town that sits on a limestone island.
09:08Reached by one of the oldest bridges in Italy.
09:11The iconic 16th century Ponte Cittavecchia.
09:17It also has the most important port in the area due to its high quality fish and seafood.
09:24So, is this usually full of fishermen?
09:27Full of fishermen.
09:28Yeah.
09:29Yeah.
09:30They come here every day from the early morning because of the sun.
09:34Right.
09:35Just for mending the air nets for, consequentially, fishing, fishing fish and purple prawns.
09:43Purple prawns?
09:44Purple prawns.
09:45Wow.
09:46And we're going to try them.
09:47Are we?
09:48Yes, of course.
09:49Oh, fantastic.
09:50Purple prawns.
09:51Of course.
09:52I've had many pink prawns.
09:54But I've never had a purple prawn.
09:56On route to the restaurant, I get to explore this beautifully preserved town that oozes character.
10:06I love the fact that you can put your washing out here.
10:09Yes, of course.
10:10That's typical here in Puglia.
10:12Yeah.
10:13Yeah.
10:14You see, this is why I like the old town because it feels traditional.
10:17It feels Italian.
10:19We need to keep preserving the personality of our city, especially in the south of Puglia.
10:25Yeah.
10:26It's gorgeous.
10:27So, Jane, that's the restaurant where we're going to try the purple prawns.
10:32Oh, this is it?
10:33Yes.
10:34Fantastic.
10:35Let's go.
10:36I'm told this is one of the best places to experience the local prawns speciality.
10:42Oh, wow.
10:44Look at this place.
10:45It's beautiful.
10:46And Andreas' good friend, Roberto, has saved me a seat.
10:50Oh, hi.
10:51Hi.
10:52Are you joining us?
10:53Yes.
10:54Nice to meet you.
10:55I'm Jane.
10:56Ciao.
10:57Ciao.
10:58Ciao.
10:59Well, when in Italy.
11:00This is nice.
11:01So, you're Roberto?
11:02Yes, I'm Roberto.
11:03Great to meet you.
11:05Do you live here?
11:06Yes, I live nearby, nearby.
11:08So, Andrea, he tells you the tales of the two cities, Gallipoli.
11:13Yeah, Gallipoli.
11:14The new one, the old one.
11:16Yeah, yeah.
11:17Yes, but there is another aspect to Gallipoli.
11:20In fact, some people call it gay-lipoli.
11:23Gay-lipoli?
11:24Yes, yes.
11:25As in gay.
11:26Yes.
11:27It's been an LGBTQ destination for decades, because very courageous people back in the
11:3670s and 80s, they just lived their lives without shame, without no hiding.
11:44And sometimes they were attacked, they were insulted, but their courage, their strength transformed
11:55Gallipoli in this city.
11:59And that's why this city attracts LGBTQIA community.
12:04Yeah.
12:05So everyone's welcome here, and plenty of prawns to go around.
12:09If, like me, you assumed they'd stay purple once cooked, we'd all be wrong.
12:14So this is the only place where you can get them cooked like this?
12:18Exactly.
12:19Exactly.
12:20So it's in olive oil and salt, and that's it?
12:22Yes.
12:23I'm going in.
12:24Okay?
12:25How is it?
12:26Oh.
12:27Oh.
12:28They are delicious.
12:29Okay.
12:30Mmm.
12:31Oh wow.
12:32Oh wow.
12:33Cheers.
12:34Cheers.
12:35Cheers.
12:36Cheers.
12:37Cheers.
12:38Cheers.
12:39Cheers.
12:40Cheers.
12:41Cheers.
12:46Back on board, the drinks keep flowing as I head to the bar to meet fellow guests Ru and
12:52Paul, to see how they're enjoying the journey so far.
12:59Cheers.
13:00Oh, this is nice.
13:02Oh, cheers.
13:03Cheers.
13:04Oh, happy birthday for next week.
13:0750th.
13:08Uh, 21.
13:0921.
13:10Sorry, I've just told everybody your age, haven't I?
13:12I do apologise.
13:13Oh, that is pretty special, that.
13:15That's nice.
13:16Margarita.
13:17Oh, it's got a bit of salt as well, because the heat's pretty full on, isn't it?
13:20It is.
13:21I see why you're doing it.
13:23It's medicinal.
13:24It is medicinal.
13:25I keep telling people it's medicinal.
13:27I know.
13:28So what made you pick this one?
13:29Is it the run?
13:30Is it Greece, Italy, the med?
13:32When we kind of chose the Pearl of Italy kind of tour,
13:36the history of the places that you can go to.
13:40Yeah.
13:41And everybody's really friendly.
13:42And this is our first time we've ever cruised.
13:45Wait, this is your first cruise?
13:46Yeah.
13:47This is the first one.
13:48Oh, my God.
13:49This is the first one.
13:50Well, it's always extra special.
13:51It's always extra special.
13:52Yeah.
13:53Your first cruise is like...
13:54Your first love, really.
13:55This is just amazing, I mean...
13:56Yeah.
13:57Let's have a drink to that.
13:58Cheers.
13:59Cheers.
14:00This is the next cruise.
14:01To the next one.
14:02I love that.
14:08I'm heading south-west next, across the Aeonian Sea,
14:12and along the Sol of Italy to the Tone,
14:15and the largest island in the Mediterranean, Sicily.
14:19Good morning.
14:20Good morning.
14:21Hi.
14:22Morning.
14:23Morning.
14:24Morning.
14:25Morning.
14:26My yacht can't dock in Sicily's shallow waters,
14:30so I'm nipping over in her tender.
14:32That is gorgeous, isn't it?
14:34She is beautiful.
14:35Look at this day.
14:36Now, I'm not going to say too much about where we're going today,
14:37but let me just say, I'm hoping they make me a laugh for her.
14:54I can't refuse.
14:56Forget Jane.
14:58Just call me the godmother.
15:00The medieval town of Savoca, perched high above the coast,
15:05was famously immortalized in Francis Ford Coppola's
15:09classic Godfather trilogy.
15:11As a superfan, I've arranged a private tour.
15:16Hi, are you Gerry?
15:17Oh, hello.
15:18I'm Jane.
15:19Oh, pleased to meet you.
15:20What a surprise.
15:21Oh, it's good to see you.
15:23You found the way up here.
15:25I know.
15:26It's gorgeous.
15:27So this is where the Godfather happened?
15:29Yeah.
15:30This is the destination, the location, and the motivation
15:33why we have so many people around here,
15:36which was unpredictable until some years ago.
15:39Uh-huh.
15:40Quite of all this successful presence here,
15:42we still have some genuine and natural corner here
15:45where I am very proud to show you.
15:48So really, let's go and discover the hidden side of Savoca.
15:54Perfect.
15:55Let's go then.
15:56Let's go.
15:57The epic gangster film, released in 1972,
16:02starred a then unknown Al Pacino as Michael Corleone
16:07and Marlon Brando as the Godfather.
16:10I remember this scene so well where Al Pacino was sat here
16:15with the guys and the guy came out and it's this very, very spot.
16:20This is the very, very spot after the love at first sight,
16:23they had a kind of magic, fatal meeting and then it was decided
16:28this was the place where there was the marriage proposal to Apollonia's father.
16:32Yeah.
16:33So the stones, the table, the trees and everything around still is breathing
16:37of such a fantastic love story that made the turning point of the whole entire film.
16:44You see how much it is loved.
16:47Everybody has bought into it.
16:49I mean, you see people's faces walking because it's very, very popular here.
16:53Let's be honest.
16:54Must have been a big risk for people here to show the mafia like it was.
17:00Very good.
17:01Your question is very sharp, straight to the point, I must say.
17:04So there was a fear at the beginning, but it was just a very superficial kind of suspicious fear
17:13because at the end of the day, this moment that could represent the risk
17:18was reconverting into an incredible fegundity, prosperity and richness for all the Florida tourists.
17:25And the genius mind of Franco Coppola and Mario Puzzo writing this plot story of a family,
17:31they had the intuition that this corner became the corner of the world.
17:37Iconic scenes were filmed all around the village of Savoca.
17:40The winding narrow roads provided the perfect backdrop to Michael Carleone lying low in Sicily.
17:47To see more, I'll need some wheels.
17:55So is this, is this our transport?
18:02Yes.
18:03This is called Ape.
18:05Ape Calese.
18:06Nice to meet you.
18:07So please you're welcome.
18:08This is Giancarlo.
18:09There you are.
18:10Hi.
18:11And we are boarding Ape Calese with Giancarlo.
18:14Oh, we know how to travel.
18:15Here we go.
18:17Fantastic.
18:19I love this.
18:20Okay.
18:21Yeah.
18:22There we go.
18:23Andźze.
18:24Come on.
18:25Way up.
18:28Come on.
18:29Is that right?
18:31Yes.
18:32Andiamo.
18:33Andiamo.
18:34Andiamo.
18:35Andiamo.
18:36Andiamo.
18:37-"On in Sicily."
18:38the streets of savaca are not only narrow but very steep so the appay is one of the best ways
18:49to get about this used to be the mean of transportation for yes for people it replaced
18:55the famous sicilian cart ah which was pulled by mule by uh donkey by horses yeah so this
19:05i'll be by fiaggio good you can go high steep oh this is gorgeous look at this place wow
19:14here we can see calabria on the left hand side yeah my vintage three-wheeler is an iconic symbol
19:21of sicily it's a unique and romantic way to sightsee if a bit bumpy the lovely houses have been
19:30refurbished oh this is a happy scene scene here yeah all in clay amazing and now we go fast by the

20:14ballads oh absolutely you can see where it comes from yes you can see why all the romantic songs are
20:21written in italy you know because right i mean wow oh we're here yes here we are oh amazing
20:34the godfather group is amongst you will recognize the church of san nicolo
20:39as a setting for michael and apollonia's nuptials
20:42so this is the famous church yes and this is the doorstep where the magic moment took place the
20:53revelation of love jerry it's like getting married isn't it yes he invites you huh shivering with joy
21:02i think italy is is very much a traditional country and i still think it has a lot of its values
21:09old-fashioned values the antarctic and the islands going down were very much nature preserving nature
21:22but then you come down to this leg of the journey and it's more tradition it's more family and everything
21:29revolves around that it is a type of place that makes you feel that joy and you can see it on
21:37everybody's faces it's amazing
21:46still to come my head is turned in capri i haven't had any romance for a long time
21:52so maybe the island is all i need
21:55you have to stay here and i go shopping in the footsteps of jackie kennedy
21:59whatever you like we're gonna make for you okay make me look classy okay it's near impossible
22:05that near impossible
22:22it's so hollywood is capri
22:25it is the most beautiful beautiful place and you do feel a bit special
22:35okay when you're hanging here okay and then yeah
22:38but even sailing in past all the islands and and seeing the scenery from the sea wow
22:47just south of naples in the campania region of italy the island of capri can't help but attract attention
22:57i can honestly see why gracie fields
23:00got here and thought i'm staying everything about it i mean everything about it
23:11it's just beautiful i've been looking forward to this
23:16all of a sudden the mediterranean has become extremely popular and not just for
23:42people in europe everywhere australians everywhere i mean americans because there's nothing quite like
23:49it capri wants a retreat for roman emperors is now a celebrity hangout
23:55so i'm going full jet set with a vip boat tour to see the bits beyond the tourist trails
24:01i'm glad you were there then lovely to meet you lovely to meet you how beautiful is this yes also
24:14today is a very fun sunny day so yeah do you wake up every morning and think oh oh yes every day yeah
24:22and just that is beautiful here once that you come here you fall in love with the island i think you do
24:27you know i've been once before and it's just it's got like a a draw it's something that draws you in
24:34yeah yeah yeah yeah so it has this romantic aspect ah it's romance yes we like that i'm
24:41i haven't had any romance for a long time so maybe the island is all i need yes you have to stay here

25:44yes there we have a tiny beach oh it's teeny that one is one of the romantic spots ah that we have
25:52also for the couples so today that's for my lot yeah yes yes yeah also from here it's possible to see
26:00if you check about the bottom of the sea oh yes you will see a sort of red color between the rocks

43:17I'm going to öld, and I'm going to love all the waves to the ocean.
43:19It's going to be a big jump.
43:20I think people are so close to me, and I'm going to lose everybody.
43:21I don't know what I'm going to get up, but I'm going to take more time toats.
43:22I'm going to get up at that point to me.
