00:03Wow oh my god families across Australia are drowning in clutter this is what we
00:14took out of your house all of them are desperate for help clutter is anything
00:23that gets between you and the life you want to live Peter Walsh frees them from the stuff holding
00:31them back while Sheree Barber renovates their homes in record time and Angie Kent brings much
00:42loved treasures back to life it gives me goosebumps it's the greatest
00:52oh my god transformation amazing of their lives
01:09married couples Sarah and Steve met eight years ago when they're in their mid-30s it was a whirlwind
01:16romance 12 months after meeting we bought a house and 12 months after that we got pregnant we
01:22with Jack and then pregnant with the twins but Zoe and James were born so premature they nearly
01:30didn't make it they were so tiny they were like 700 grams the size of your hand having two sick
01:38kids in hospital and then also trying to get home to Jack was really hard after years of hospital
01:46treatments and therapies both James and Zoe are now thriving as is their brother Jack but the family's
01:53traumatic past has left a legacy that's causing friction in the home
02:00the clutter wasn't a priority when the twins were in hospital so it just kept growing
02:07we've got a whole heap of just stuff everywhere really Sarah says it's all mine and I say that
02:14it's not there's a lot of kids stuff a lot of household stuff and the garage is chock-a-block
02:21the clutter drives me bananas I can get quite fired up about it it doesn't bother Steve so it's caused
02:30many
02:30arguments over the years I don't want to live like this for the rest of my life I don't want
02:36my kids to
02:36grow up in a house that's cluttered and for them to think this is the norm
02:50raising young kids can be exhausting especially when they've had serious health issues add to that
02:56a couple who don't see eye to eye on their clutter and it's clear Steve and Sarah need our help
03:03hey hey doing how are you good and she's not with us she's going to join us a little later
03:09on
03:09okay so we hear there's a bit of a clutter issue going on yes where should we start in the
03:14garage
03:15so down the sidewalk let's check it out all right ready yep whoa wow
03:29so I'm seeing a lot of different stuff I see gym gear yep pool gear yeah you got a ton
03:35of tradie stuff
03:36that's your business yep every house that gets built twelve months later they do an inspection
03:41got any defects I go in and fix so you're the guy who keeps everything he ever worked on uh
03:46sort of yeah
03:50I see something that sparked my interest being the car buff that I am what's under this sheet that's
03:56my baby that's my car
03:58yes what is it GTS
03:59yep
04:01when was the last time you drove it oh
04:03year and a half maybe
04:04with how hectic it's been with the kids everything's kind of been pushed aside and left for a while
04:11okay so instead of enthusiasm about this space it feels like there's a bit of almost sadness
04:17yeah it's a where do I start sort of thing now because everything's just been thrown in and yeah
04:23a bit overwhelming to get started
04:26Sarah what do you think when you look at this space
04:29disappointment a bit of embarrassment frustration
04:32but this can't really have a renovation can it I can't renovate it it's brand new you can't plasterboard this
04:38in and trick it up
04:39okay so what's needed is a decluttering and an organization so we can we can do that
04:47in my experience it's rare for this much clutter to be contained to just one space and sure enough when
04:54we enter the house and walk into the first bedroom
04:57there it is
04:58okay
04:59we're hit by another wave of clutter
05:05this room is so full it looks more like a storage unit than a bedroom for their five-year-old
05:11son Jack
05:11so what's in here
05:13christmas tree kids toys car seats
05:17clutter basically
05:19i presume Jack doesn't sleep in this room
05:22no
05:22no
05:23Jack would say
05:24mommy there's too many things too many shadows in my room
05:28okay
05:28and he's been in our room ever since
05:31okay so this is not used at the moment
05:33where are the twins James
05:35and Zoe sleeping
05:36next door
05:37okay let's check that out
05:42okay
05:45definitely a kids room
05:46a very lived in kids room
05:49yes
05:50all right so we got a boy and a girl
05:51yes
05:51they're twins right
05:52yes okay
05:53how old are they
05:54four
05:54and Jack is five
05:56yes
05:56yep
05:56do you think Zoe would like her own room
05:58yeah probably
05:59I think so
06:01for a kids room this is pretty dull and boring
06:04so besides swapping around who sleeps where
06:06I've got some exciting ideas on how to make both rooms a lot more fun
06:11you stay here concocting we're going to check out the master bedroom
06:14let's go
06:14come on guys let's have a look
06:20okay
06:22that's Jack's bed wow
06:23how long has that been there
06:25oh yeah a good couple of years
06:29who's running the house you guys or the kids
06:31yeah well the kids at the moment
06:33yeah okay
06:34and that's not a surprise because you guys have come
06:37kind of through through the wars with the kids
06:41the twins were born at 25 weeks and two days
06:44they were very premature and very very sick
06:48they nearly died
06:50Zoe spent 121 days and James spent 129 days in the neonatal intensive care unit in special care
06:59but even after they came home
07:01James had such a weakened immune system
07:04and such a weakened respiratory system
07:07that he was readmitted six times to hospital
07:11but with a lot of different therapies and supports
07:13they've come such a long way and they are kicking goals
07:17but it was a very big long traumatic journey for us all
07:22the kids are in every facet of the house
07:25so our little sanctuary is non-existent
07:27so where do you escape to?
07:30nowhere really
07:31yeah
07:32are you even able to be intimate in this space?
07:38not really
07:39no not really
07:42there has to be a kid free zone in your home
07:46and this is it
07:49we need to get romance back in this space
07:52we do
07:53yeah
07:54that's why we're here
07:55yeah
07:57ready to go?
07:58yep
07:58let's get started
07:59ok good
08:06to get Sarah and Steve's relationship back on track
08:09all their belongings must be packed up and removed from the house
08:14the task ahead does seem daunting
08:16it's going to bring up a lot of memories
08:19from the twins when they were very little and very sick
08:21and probably strike a few nerves with Steve and I
08:25I know it's going to be a lot to go through
08:30coming up
08:31while Cherie rips into the reno
08:36Sarah's frustration grows
08:37as Steve resists letting things go
08:40are you going to use these things or not?
08:43yeah
08:43good question
08:51Peter and the team are packing up the last of Sarah and Steve's belongings
08:58the mountains of clutter engulfing their home has strained the couple's relationship
09:03while raising son Jack and twins Zoe and James
09:06who faced huge health battles when they were born prematurely
09:15with the last van loaded up the family's things head off to a warehouse for sorting
09:19while Cherie's arranged for Steve's car to be sent to a secure storage unit
09:25like Steve I love classic cars
09:28I have my own gorgeous 1956 Chevy and wouldn't want anything to happen to it
09:33so we're going to keep Steve's car safe from damage during the reno
09:43at the Space Invaders warehouse
09:48as the family's items are laid out and arranged into categories
09:52Angie arrives to search for treasure
09:57what a find
09:59this beautiful old chest has an intriguing clue about its history
10:02and could be a precious family heirloom
10:06plus I've uncovered some cool old-school toys and photos
10:09and a special collection of mementos from when the twins were born
10:13I can't wait to meet Sarah and Steve and discover the stories behind these treasures
10:23okay good, keep walking, good
10:26this couple is still carrying the pain and trauma of looking after their premature twins
10:31and it's all tied up with holding on to too much stuff
10:34so Sarah and Steve must confront both their physical and emotional clutter
10:40to cull at least 70% of what's here
10:42so they can restore harmony to their home
10:45and their marriage
10:48one
10:49two
10:51three
10:52open your eyes
10:54oh
10:55oh
10:56oh
11:02wow
11:04that's a lot of stuff
11:05just a bit
11:06oh my god
11:08oh
11:12all of this
11:13took us more than 140 boxes to get from your home to here
11:19oh my goodness
11:20oh my goodness
11:21oh my goodness
11:21yeah
11:24I want to show you what you have here
11:26okay, here we go
11:27first up, we have these 12 tables here
11:31and behind me of items we bought from the garage
11:33oh
11:36then, in this row here we have sporting equipment, electronics, memorabilia
11:41here, on this table here, we have more than 450 items of kids' clothing
11:50wow
11:52right here in front of me, this long row and this long row, plus six hanging racks are your clothes
12:01out of your bedroom
12:02then, running down here on the wall and on these tables, more than 1500 toys
12:11oh
12:13for three kids
12:16huge number
12:26what's happening Sarah?
12:28it's just the kids stuff, I don't know, I'm feeling like a failing parent
12:34buy things, buy things, make the kids happy
12:39don't you dare stand here
12:42and say that
12:43too much?
12:45absolutely
12:47but failure?
12:49no
12:50thank you
12:52but this is confronting
12:55oh yeah it is
12:56very confronting
12:58but that's why we're here
13:01we're going to get rid of the anxiety, we're going to get rid of the sense of feeling overwhelmed
13:05yeah
13:05let's go, come with me
13:09over at the cleared out house, Sheree is planning her ambitious two day renovation with a super tight budget
13:17the family sleeping arrangements have become pretty dysfunctional, so I need to shuffle things around
13:23to transform Steve and Sarah's bedroom into a relaxing parents retreat, five year old Jack's bed has got to go
13:31so the dull and boring room James and Zoe currently share will be turned into a fun bedroom for the
13:36two boys
13:37and the space being used to store clutter will be reborn as the ultimate little girls room for four year
13:44old Zoe
13:45while the garage doesn't need renovating, I do want to add much needed storage to keep things nice and organised
13:56as the demolition phase gets underway, the paint crew gets started by freshening up the ceilings and architrace
14:04yep
14:05and in the main bedroom, Sheree's dealing with a design challenge
14:10to lux up this bland room, I want to create a stylish feature wall
14:14but that big ugly air con was smack bang in the wrong spot
14:17so we've ripped that out and I'm moving it to the opposite side of the room
14:23and we can begin constructing a timber frame for a new alcove shelf that will sit in front of the
14:28old wall
14:30it's a big job, but it'll create a beautiful boutique hotel vibe
14:34that I really hope Steve and Sarah will love
14:40I'd like to keep that
14:41what have we got here?
14:42these are footy trip tops
14:43where were all these hiding?
14:45probably in the back of my closet
14:46okay
14:47I've never seen them before
14:48oh really?
14:49yeah
14:49back at the warehouse, Steve's struggling to let go of tables full of his belongings
14:54even though they've been buried amongst clutter for years
14:57are you keeping this?
14:59it's a tough one
15:02don't really want to get rid of them
15:04make some decisions, come on
15:06alright, let it go
15:10we'd probably like to keep that
15:14Sarah's desperate to reclaim space in the family home
15:17and I can see her frustration building with every item Steve decides to keep
15:22um, they're part of that
15:24keep that please
15:24okay, where are these going to live?
15:26yeah, good question
15:30um...
15:30I don't know
15:32let's be realistic
15:33let's be realistic
15:34are you going to use these things or not?
15:37because look around
15:38at how much stuff you have
15:41having been through the last few years
15:44what's important to you now?
15:46family and kids
15:47yeah
15:49so that's what has to be important moving forward
15:51because at the moment all this stuff is just driving a wedge between the two of you
15:57so, is it going to go?
15:59keep the black one but the grey one can go
16:02okay
16:03so let's keep moving
16:04it's clear Steve's not thrilled that I'm challenging him
16:08but it's my job to push him and Sarah out of the unhappy place they're in right now
16:15ah, they could go
16:17not that I want them to
16:19is this staying or going?
16:21unfortunately go
16:22okay
16:22we don't need this
16:26nice job
16:26when we started we had these tables completely covered in stuff
16:30we now have six boxes off to donation
16:32yeah, I'm feeling like we've made a good start
16:35yeah? Steve?
16:36yeah
16:38we have managed to reduce the number of items
16:40but Sarah and Steve still aren't working together with a shared goal
16:45there's still a warehouse full of stuff to get through
16:49and if I can't get this couple onto the same page
16:52we could be in real trouble
16:54lots more to do, come with me
16:55let's go
16:56good
16:58coming up, Angie discovers the emotional story behind Steve's vintage toys
17:03so this is a prized possession
17:06yeah
17:07oh my god
17:09and will Cherie's hopes of finishing the reno on time
17:12be washed away?
17:19at Steve and Sarah's house
17:21the army of tradies are hard at work
17:25with the air con in the main bedroom being hooked up in its new position
17:29and the unusable room once filled with clutter
17:32is now being transformed into a bedroom for four-year-old Zoe
17:36I reckon it'll be somewhere about there
17:40Zoe absolutely loves pink
17:42so we're installing this beautiful glossy pendant light to anchor my design
17:46and painting the walls a complimentary shade
17:51and on the wall behind the bed
17:53we're putting up oak coloured panels to add warmth and texture
17:57but the really big eye-catching feature
18:00will be cute whimsical wallpaper to keep things young and fun
18:05while the wallpaper goes up
18:08Cherie's out shopping for furniture to suit James and Jack's new room
18:11the old kids bedroom had two tiny beds
18:15so I want to replace them with full-size singles
18:17that will still fit the small room
18:19and last the boys into their teens
18:22so with this bed you've got quite a lot of extra storage in the headboard
18:25oh that's so good
18:26you'll also see on the side you've actually got USB charging and an LED light
18:30so you can charge games, iPads and phones eventually as they get older
18:42perfect
18:42at the warehouse
18:43are you surprised at the sheer volume of this
18:47yes
18:49Sarah now needs to cull the hundreds of clothes
18:52belonging to four-year-old twins James and Zoe
18:54and five-year-old Jack
18:57keep
18:57okay that's a keep
18:59good
19:01oh
19:05these were their little suits when we got married
19:08and Zoe's little dress
19:11oh cute
19:12they were so small
19:14and that's how you remember them
19:17isn't it? from the moment they were born even
19:19yeah
19:20what was the scariest moment?
19:22the morning after Zoe was born
19:26I had two doctors and a nurse saying
19:29Zoe had a collapsed lung
19:30and it'll be touch and go for the next week
19:34and then James was
19:37not being able to get off the ventilator
19:39I remember just holding them both and saying we're all getting out here
19:44I'm not leaving without either of you
19:50so
19:52what effect is that
19:54had on
19:55all of this?
19:58potentially the excitement that we've got this far
20:01that we've made it through so many stages of clothing sizes as well
20:06totally understandable
20:08you had to lean into something to help
20:11but now it's time to lean out of this because your kids are okay
20:15yes
20:16you've come through it
20:18yep
20:18it's a new day
20:21as parents Sarah and Steve have been to hell and back
20:24but now we need to close that traumatic chapter
20:28deal with all this stuff and focus on the future
20:31so these are definitely staying
20:33thank you
20:34great
20:35um
20:36go
20:37go
20:38keep
20:39Peter has helped so much
20:43I've had I guess a lot of nerves and some emotions that I've kept pretty well hidden for a few
20:49years now
20:50um
20:51go
20:51I think I've just kept going for so long that to have the emotions come up today was actually quite
20:57cathartic
20:58go
20:59go
21:00keep
21:01great job
21:02now look what we have
21:04Zoe's
21:05James
21:05and Jack
21:06and we have eight boxes
21:08going off to donation
21:09every time a box fills it's lighter and lighter
21:12I love that
21:13great job we have more to do let's go
21:15come with me
21:19upstairs
21:19Angie is keen to meet Steve
21:21and find out more about the photos and vintage toys she discovered buried amongst the clutter
21:27so I heard you've got quite the classic car
21:32yes
21:33is this it
21:34no
21:35that is me on the back of my parents car from when we were kids
21:39okay
21:39my parents got rid of it when I was about 15 and then when I had enough money I went
21:44and chased one down and got one restored exactly the same
21:47because you loved it so much
21:48because I loved it so much
21:49good okay so this is the original
21:51yep
21:52and who are these little cuties
21:53that's my brothers
21:55Robbie who passed away and my younger brother David
21:59Robbie got diagnosed with leukaemia about the age of eight
22:03we did a bone marrow transplant I was the donor
22:07and how old were you
22:08ten eleven twelve
22:10and then they tried it on your brother
22:12then they tried it on my brother and it supposedly worked but then in the end it didn't
22:17that's a huge thing for you to go through as a kid
22:20yep
22:22and I found these
22:24are these little special ones they look a bit old school
22:27yes they are they were Robbie's so he had those in his bedroom
22:31oh beautiful
22:32and yeah mum kept them and then gave these ones to me
22:36so it was a surprised possession
22:38yep
22:39these vintage toys and family photos have huge sentimental value but they've been hidden away for far too long
22:46so I'm going to create a display for these treasures in Steve's garage
22:50so these special memories can live on
22:57over at Steve and Sarah's house it's a hive of activity
23:03with the main bedrooms new feature wall rapidly coming together
23:08decorative panels to go over the plasterboard can be installed
23:13I've used rounded panels in Zoe's room for a fun playful look
23:16but I'm going with the square edge profile in Sarah and Steve's bedroom to give it a modern sophisticated feel
23:23not only are they quick to install but as they're pre-primed we can start painting as soon as they're
23:29up
23:39while the crew paint the panels and walls dark grey to help create the stylish hotel vibe I'm going for
23:44I'm ordering a matching rug that'll feel cosy and soft underfoot
23:57down the hallway in the new bedroom for brothers Jack and James
24:00oh look at that gap
24:02Cherise noticed a problem with the wardrobe doors
24:05she says there's probably carpet there at some stage
24:07it is a big gap yeah
24:09yeah I can't leave it like that
24:10I can see this issue is also present in the other bedrooms
24:14so we've got to remove all the doors
24:16cut extra lengths of timber
24:19and add them to the bottom so we can close the odd looking gaps between the doors and the floor
24:26oh my god
24:28but suddenly the weather turns
24:31and work outside comes to a standstill
24:34that's a rope
24:35we can't use any power tools in the raid
24:38so hopefully it will pass quickly so we don't fall behind schedule
24:48coming up
24:49so it's a proper treasure
24:52yes
24:53Angie uncovers the old chest's epic tale
24:57guys thank you for coming today
24:59and will Steve and Sarah's kids cope with letting their toys go
25:09so what do you think of these
25:11um
25:12keep that
25:12okay
25:13Peter's now helping Steve reduce the huge number of items
25:17which were clogging the family's garage
25:20golf balls
25:21thank you
25:23I'd like to use them
25:25Steve's dream is to have an organised garage
25:27with room for building materials needed for his job
25:30and access to his classic car
25:33they're very expensive
25:35keep those
25:36this one's empty
25:37but he's having real trouble getting rid of surplus stuff
25:42has the garage been a source of friction for you and Sarah
25:45yeah because Sarah doesn't like the fact that it's got that amount of stuff in it
25:49mm-hmm
25:50but I've always had the mentality I'll keep the stuff because with my line of work I can use that
25:55down the track
25:56that's the thing that people get caught up in
25:58that I'm saving money over here in one sense
26:02but what's it been costing you in terms of space or harmony in your house
26:08yeah it's been costing us
26:10the
26:11relationship between me and Sarah just not being happy
26:14and
26:15I'm not happy with the space because I can't use it
26:19so how will decluttering help you
26:21it'll get rid of the friction
26:23okay
26:24and make home life a lot easier
26:26yeah
26:26and that's a step in the right direction
26:28yeah
26:29with his family's happiness now front of mind
26:31I'm hoping Steve will be able to make quick decisions about what's needed and what's not
26:36so this is jewels good
26:37that one can go I don't use it
26:40good
26:41while Steve eliminates everything he doesn't use
26:44I'm grouping like items together so when they go back into the garage it will all be organised
26:52okay
26:53great job
26:54so initially these whole two rows were completely covered
26:57now we have seven categories
26:59yeah
27:00clearly defined
27:01and we have more than a dozen boxes going off to either donation or to be properly disposed of
27:08yeah
27:09okay good
27:09I'm happy to have gotten rid of
27:11yeah the excess clutter
27:13we've got more stuff to do
27:15come with me
27:15cool
27:15good
27:17while Peter and Steve continue sorting through items
27:20Sarah is upstairs meeting Angie
27:23who's excited to find out more about the chest
27:26and mementos she discovered amongst the clutter
27:29what am I looking at?
27:31this is a family chest
27:32so this came over from England
27:35England
27:36with my dad
27:37my auntie
27:39my grandma
27:40my grandpa
27:41on a six week boat trip
27:43so it's a proper treasure
27:45yes
27:47turns out this beautiful chest was used by Sarah's family to carry their belongings aboard the Maloia
27:53when they emigrated to Australia in 1951 as 10 pound poms
27:58which they were called because each adult was charged 10 pounds for the trip
28:02whilst I was looking at this I did some extra research
28:06and I found this passenger list if you have a look
28:12my family names are there
28:14it's your family names
28:15yes
28:16that's amazing
28:18to me a piece like this needs to be holding real treasures and real memories
28:25and I came across some absolutely beautiful treasures
28:32my babies
28:33that was their first little beanies
28:36what?
28:38there's a whole collection of precious memories here from the early days of James and Zoe's life
28:43little teeny tiny napies
28:45little teeny tiny napies
28:46these incredible keepsakes deserve to be honoured not buried amongst clutter
28:51so I'm going to repurpose Sarah's family chest and create something really special for this amazing family
29:01at Steve and Sarah's house the rain is still coming down
29:04forcing tradies to work under a tarp to keep the Renault moving
29:09while inside Sheree and the team are giving James and Jack's room a bold pop of colour
29:14for a kid's room this was really dull and boring
29:17so we're painting one wall blue and keeping the others neutral
29:21so we can then add these fun decals
29:24as I know the boys are obsessed with dinosaurs
29:30as the lengthened wardrobe doors are installed
29:34the garage that was overrun with clutter gets much needed organisation
29:40to keep things off the floor
29:42we're maximising the unused vertical wall space
29:45by adding adjustable shelving
29:47so Steve can easily access his heavy tools and equipment
29:52guys, thank you for coming today
29:55Peter has called in Steve and Sarah's kids
29:58to help deal with the more than 1,500 toys clogging the rooms in their house
30:04one
30:06two
30:07three
30:10yeah
30:14despite the fun start to engage the kids
30:17it's actually Sarah I need to reach the most
30:20as she's admitted to buying many of these toys
30:23to compensate for being away from Jack for so long
30:26when the twins were in hospital
30:27I would love you to go around and find your favourite toys
30:31that you want to keep and put them on your table
30:34off you go
30:34so I want Sarah to see that kids need far less stuff to be happy
30:38than we give them credit for
30:40that's it
30:42good job
30:42go get another one
30:44good job

31:18well done
31:18good job, give yourself a clap
31:20give a clap
31:22the kids have got things off to a great start

31:35no
31:36that one doesn't work
31:38yep
31:39I can see a real shift here
31:41Sarah and Steve are starting to realise that by communicating and working as a team
31:46right
31:48they can achieve their goal of a harmonious clutter free home
31:53so we started with six tables
31:55covered in toys
31:56plus this wall
31:58now you're down to two tables
32:01and 14 boxes
32:03off to donation
32:05less clutter
32:07less for me to do
32:09which means that I can be more present with the kids
32:12I love that
32:12and more time with you two together
32:14okay
32:15yep
32:15fantastic
32:16still more to do

32:18let's go guys, good
32:21upstairs
32:22Angie's ready to repurpose Sarah's family treasure
32:26this chest has great weathered character that I want to retain
32:30but to make it more useful
32:32I'm turning it into a bench seat with storage
32:34to keep the mementos of when twins James and Zoe were born
32:40after a light sand I'm applying beeswax to protect the vintage timber
32:48on the inside I'm adding the passenger list with the names of Sarah's family
32:52then I'm combining thick cardboard with wadding and wrapping it up in velvet to make plush new inserts for the
32:59chest
33:01to make the seat cushion I'm spraying adhesive on a piece of MDF so I can glue foam on top
33:07then covering it with material that'll tie in with Cherie's sophisticated colour scheme
33:13I can't wait to see Sarah and Steve's reaction when they see this beauty in their newly renovated home
33:23coming up

34:22there's also plenty of new furniture going into Zoe's room
34:25to make sure these beautiful new pieces are secure
34:28we're using a stud finder to locate a solid timber beam behind the plasterboard
34:34then attaching an anti-tip device to help prevent accidents and keep the kids safe
34:40oh that's beautiful
34:42and we're adding new artwork that's just arrived
