Artemis II scorched capsule inspected after splashdown

The Orion capsule from NASA's Artemis II mission was being inspected aboard the USS John P. Murtha on Saturday, a day after the spacecraft splashed down in the Pacific following a nearly 10-day journey around the Moon. Video showed technicians in protective suits examining the capsule on its recovery cradle, and views of its blackened heat shield and outer layer marked by re-entry wear. The four-member crew returned safely on Friday, capping the first voyage by humans to the vicinity of the moon in more than 50 years. Artemis II was the first crewed test flight of NASA's renewed lunar program, which aims to return astronauts to the moon later this decade. The mission is a key step in plans to establish a sustained lunar presence as a precursor to future human missions to Mars.
