The Kuyalnyk Sanatorium near Odesa looks like it lost an argument with time. The walls are cracking, the shine is gone, and yet people keep showing up. Fewer than before, sure. But the longing is still there, loud and stubborn: maybe the salt lake will help. Maybe the black mud treatment will do something miraculous. Anything, really, that could fight infertility or illness.

All of this is happening while war is raging somewhere out of frame. So the film sits with the awkward, everyday kind of resilience. Gar O‘Rourke doesn’t treat it like a war movie, though the air has that pressure. Instead you get a summer portrait where laughter and sadness share the same bench. A community refusing to clock out, even as the building clearly wants to.

Das Kuyalnyk-Sanatorium bei Odessa wirkt, als hätte man es schon vor Jahren vergessen. Die Mauern bröseln, der Sommer läuft trotzdem weiter, und die Gäste auch. Weniger von ihnen als früher, aber alle mit derselben Idee: Vielleicht hilft Salzsee. Vielleicht hilft schwarzer Schlamm. Vielleicht gibt es ja doch noch ein Wunder gegen Unfruchtbarkeit und Krankheit, wenn man nur lang genug hofft.

Während irgendwo in der Ferne Krieg tobt, sitzt man hier mitten im Alltag fest. Gar O‘Rourke sammelt das Ganze nicht als Heldengeschichte, sondern als Mischung aus bitterem Humor und stiller Melancholie. Ein Ort, der zerfällt, und Menschen, die sich trotzdem nicht ausrangieren lassen.
