This isn’t a gentle music documentary. Kreator’s tale is told like a power chord: loud, direct, and with just enough swagger. The setup is simple and slightly hilarious. For Kreator’s 40th anniversary in 2024, frontman Mille Petrozza plans to re-record the band’s biggest hits at Berlin’s famous Hansa Studios. And no, it’s not just a solo nostalgia session. He’s bringing in major figures from the metal world, with names like Metallica, Sepultura, Slayer, and Anthrax showing up around the process. What makes it work is the exclusive private archive footage. Not polished myth-making, more like rare backstage evidence. “Dystopia und Hoffnung” fits, because the film somehow manages to feel bleak and hungry at the same time.

Thrash-Metal, aber ohne Hallenkoller. Der Film erzählt die Kreator-Story als ziemlich laute Erfolgsrechnung: Von Essener Schülerband zur internationalen Thrash-Legende, und das Ganze als Jubiläums-Spin-off zum 40. Geburtstag. Mille Petrozza will für die Hansa Studios in Berlin die größten Hits neu einspielen. Klingt erstmal nach “Best of”, bis die Sache ernst wird, denn dafür holt man Größen der Metalszene dazu. Zwischen dem Recording-Pingpong gibt’s exklusives privates Archivmaterial, also Momente, die man sonst nur im Proberaum-Geheimfach vermuten würde. Dystopie und Hoffnung, ja. Aber vor allem klingt es nach einem ziemlich smarten Versuch, Vergangenheit nicht totzurollen, sondern nochmal anzuzünden.
