00:2339 U.S. aircraft destroyed in just over a month of war.
00:28That's the number now raising serious questions about the true cost of the 2026 U.S.-Iran conflict.
00:37As the dust settles on Operation Epic Fury, a nearly six-week air campaign against Iran,
00:45a clearer picture of battlefield losses is emerging.
00:49And it's significant.
00:50According to a detailed open-source analysis by The War Zone, a total of 39 U.S. military aircraft were
00:59destroyed during the conflict.
01:01The majority of those losses? Drones. At least 24 MQ-9 Reaper unmanned systems shot down or lost across the
01:12CENTCOM region.
01:14These surveillance and strike drones formed the backbone of U.S. operations and were heavily targeted by Iranian air defenses.
01:23But the losses didn't stop there.
01:25Four F-15E Strike Eagle fighter jets were destroyed.
01:30Three in a friendly fire incident involving Kuwaiti air defenses.
01:35And one shot down by Iranian forces over Iran.
01:39Two MC-130J special operations aircraft, taken out during high-risk rescue missions.
01:47Two KC-135 aerial refueling tankers, critical for keeping U.S. jets in the air, also lost.
01:56One E-3G Sentry AWACS airborne command and surveillance platform destroyed in a missile or drone strike on Prince Sultan
02:06Air Base in Saudi Arabia.
02:07A CH-47 Chinook helicopter, four MH-6 Little Bird helicopters, and even an A-10 Warthog, also among the
02:18losses.
02:19And that's not the full picture.
02:21Several more aircraft were damaged, including additional tankers, an F-35 stealth fighter, and combat search-and-rescue helicopters.
02:30These losses came from a mix of causes.
02:34Direct Iranian air defenses systems, ballistic and cruise missile strikes on bases, drone attacks, and in some cases, accidents and
02:43friendly fire.
02:45Despite this, the United States Department of Defense maintains that air superiority was never lost.
02:51Officials say Iranian capabilities were significantly degraded, and overall losses remain manageable given the scale of U.S. military power.
03:02But the numbers are still striking.
03:04Thirty-nine destroyed aircraft, in a conflict lasting just over a month, represents one of the highest loss rates in
03:12recent U.S. military operations.
03:15For comparison, recent wars in Iraq and Afghanistan saw fewer losses over much longer periods, largely due to weaker air
03:24defenses.
03:25Here, the battlefield was different.
03:27Iran deployed layered defenses, including missiles, drones, and radar systems, creating a far more contested airspace.
03:36Iranian and aligned media have seized on these figures, framing them as proof that U.S. air power can be
03:44challenged.
03:44A narrative of asymmetrical resistance against a technologically superior force.
03:50But analysts caution.
03:52While the losses are real, they represent only a small fraction of total U.S. air assets, and many of
04:00the most sensitive details remain classified.
04:03What's clear, however, is that this conflict has changed the conversation.
04:08About modern air warfare, about drone vulnerability, and about the risks of operating in heavily defended airspace.
04:17Because in this war, even the world's most advanced air force did not come out untouched.
