00:24This special episode of The Saints is about the life of the Holy Mother of God,
00:29the Virgin Mary, and it's being shown on Easter, the most blessed day in the Christian calendar.
00:37I was born in the 1940s, and I grew up in Little Italy in New York.
00:41It was a different time in a different world, and for everyone in that world,
00:46Easter was the most sacred holiday of the year.
00:50Christmas was different, more of a secular holiday, less a celebration of the birth of Jesus
00:55than a kind of magical children's day with Santa Claus and presents everywhere.
00:59But Easter weekend, that was something else.
01:03It started on Good Friday in the depths of suffering, defeat, and darkness,
01:08when all the ornamentation would be removed from the altar,
01:12and everything was covered in purple cloth.
01:14And then on Sunday, it ended in a grand triumph with the resurrection and the redemption of humanity.
01:23The story of Jesus, his life, his teachings, his example, his death, his resurrection,
01:33is intertwined with the life of his mother.
01:42We tried our best to do justice to the life of Mary, the mother of Jesus,
01:50in this very special Easter episode of The Saints.
02:05She came into this world without original sin.
02:11This was the Immaculate Conception.
02:17She moved with self-confidence, wrote the Austrian poet Rainer Maria Rilke.
02:24Showing that human beings are dwarfed by devotion in one single heart.
02:42Please.
02:50Joseph, what do you have to offer to this woman, Mary?
02:59I give her this coin as a token of our union.
03:14You are hereby consecrated unto me, according to the laws of Moses and Israel.
03:20You will live apart for one year from now, and then you will be wed.
03:27May the Lord bless you both and bless your union.
03:32Amen.
03:58She was chosen.
04:01Visited by a force, a presence, an angel.
04:10A beautiful mother of Jesus.
04:11May the Lord bless you both learn how to receive the steel shoes.
04:20Let the Lord bless you both and bless you both and bless you both and bless you both.
04:22Amen.
04:24Amen.
04:24Amen.
04:27Amen.
04:28Amen.
04:29Amen.

12:50I don't know.
13:09I don't know.
13:36I don't know.
14:03To give birth to this child, to know that she had been chosen, and of all the people
14:10in this world, her world, and the great world that's stretched all the way to Rome and
14:17beyond.
14:19To be her.
14:22I don't know.
14:27I don't know.
14:28I don't know.
14:43I don't know.
15:00I don't know.
15:03I don't know.
15:09I don't know.
15:10I don't know.
15:11I don't know.
15:16I don't know.
15:18I don't know.
15:19I don't know.
15:19I don't know.
15:23I don't know.
15:48I don't know.
15:52I don't know.
16:01I don't know.
16:11I don't know.
16:12I don't know.
16:43I don't know.
16:53I don't know.
17:03I don't know.
17:06I don't know.
17:11I don't know.
17:13I don't know.
17:14You know, the messiah of the Jews.
17:18Please accept our homage to you, great king Herod.
17:25Who is this miraculous child?
17:30Where is he?
17:32I would like to pay an homage to this child.
17:38We have yet to find him, Your Majesty.
17:43You see that you do.
17:45And when you do, come tell me where he is.
17:50You may take your leave.
18:03Who is this child?
18:05Where is this child?
18:07Perhaps the child was born in Bethlehem.
18:10Bethlehem, why do you say that?
18:12The prophet Micah foretold the birth of the Messiah in Bethlehem.
18:22Find him.
18:30According to Jewish tradition, Jesus was circumcised by his father at eight days old.
18:40God!
18:42I don't know.
18:43I don't know.
18:56I don't know.
18:59I don't know.
19:01and we'll see you next time.
19:37Why didn't you tell King Herod about the new star?
19:40Did you believe he wanted to pay homage to this child?
19:44No.
19:48We must find this child quickly.
19:54Another day's traveling?
19:56Yes.
20:03For these few days and nights, this little stable was the center of the world.
20:16This is a gift to the world.
20:20How did you come to us?
20:21The star guided us.
20:24The new star.
20:27My friend, we have something to tell you.
20:32On a journey here, we paid our respects to your King Herod.
20:36He told us he meant to pay homage to this child.
20:40We believe he means to do him harm.
20:49Herod.
20:50I regret that we agreed to him, but of course, we were obliged to.
20:55You should leave Bethlehem.
20:58We will go to Jerusalem when my wife is able for her purification.
21:03You must stay away from Jerusalem.
21:06It's dangerous.
21:07It's dangerous.
21:19There is a refuge.
21:22I'm so glad for her.
21:58Every male child in Bethlehem under the age of two was slaughtered by Herod's men.
22:39I, Maryam, daughter of Hannah, have completed the days of my purification.
22:46According to the Torah, I brought these birds as my purification offering, one for a burnt offering and one for
22:54a sin offering, so that I may be clean before the Lord.
23:12You can now let this faithful servant go in peace.
23:16Now that I have seen the salvation that you have prepared for all people on this earth to see, a
23:29light of revelation for the Gentiles, a light of glory for the people of Israel.
23:47This child is destined to teach us all of the failures in the hearts of many people in Israel, and
23:58he'll bring the resurgence of just as many.
24:04He will be misunderstood.
24:08He'll be contradicted.
24:13And this will cause you great pain and sorrow. It will cut through like a knife.
24:19The rejection of this boy when he is a man will force a greater honesty.
24:28We will see God's truth about every heart among us.
24:43We must leave Jerusalem. The world will spread like wildfire.
24:48A daybreak?
24:49No, no. Now.
24:59The child that Herod wanted dead was on his way to Egypt.
25:06Joseph.
25:07Yes?
25:08I'm thirsty.
25:31When Joseph and Mary returned after Herod's death, they settled with their son Jesus in Nazareth.
25:38In the land of Israel.
25:42Jesus.
25:44Do you remember that the festival of Passover is just one month away?
25:49Yes, Father.
25:54We will slaughter the Paschal Lamb together in the temple.
25:58Yes.
25:59We live in six days.
26:03I am the God of your father.
26:06The God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob said God to Moses.
26:11And what did Moses do?
26:15He hid his face away.
26:18Why?
26:20Why?
26:20Why do you think he hid his face?
26:26Because to look at the face of God is to claim an understanding of God.
26:31God is felt, not seen.
26:34Felt from within.
26:37Yes.
26:44Why did Moses look away from God, but still listen to God?
26:51Why didn't he cover his ears?
26:55Because the ear penetrates and resounds within.
27:05A fine answer.
27:09Back to the work before you.
27:14How will you know that the angle is true?
27:36Yes.
27:38It's true.
27:43After we've finished, we'll talk through Jonah.
27:48Yes.
27:59Mother?
28:00Mother?
28:05How did you know I was here?
28:09I always know when you're there.
28:26There were three great yearly religious festivals.
28:30Shavuot, or Pentecost.
28:33Sukkot, or the Feast of the Tabernacles.
28:37Pilgrims.
28:38And Pesach, which we call Passover.
28:44Pilgrims from all over Israel would ascend to Jerusalem to go to the Temple.
28:49Yes, we have known no sailors.
28:53What is that?
29:07It's like a disaster.
29:08Do you think again?
29:08What is this?
29:08Bye okay.
29:10Who are hungry?
29:11Taful of tells us to go to a Ogre Project!
30:19After seven days, and having fulfilled the commandments of Passover, the pilgrims would leave Jerusalem and go back to their
30:26homes.
30:27I am so grateful we're here together with our families. I feel blessed to be traveling with you, Mary.
30:33As do I.
30:37Joseph, do you know where Jesus is?
30:39I haven't seen him. He's probably back there.
30:45Hey, he's going up. He knows where to find us.
30:49The boys were together in the back. He's with Malachi. Don't worry.
30:57We must make the inn before nightfall.
31:02We should wait for him.
31:09Joseph! He's not here.
31:12We have to stay here until the boys catch up.
31:16Malachi, where's Jesus?
31:18I don't know. I haven't seen him all day.
31:22I thought you were together.
31:25We must go back.
31:27We have to find him.
31:29Mary!
31:29Mary!
31:43Have you seen Jesus?
31:47Have you seen my son?
31:59Have you seen a 12-year-old boy named Jesus?
32:02There are so many boys named Jesus. I'm sorry, my dear.
32:12Maybe he went back to the temple.
32:18Ask them if they've seen our boy.
32:24Have you seen a 12-year-old boy?
32:26No.
32:28Wait there!
32:59Because God doesn't favor wealth or power.
33:01Excuse me.
33:02Forgive me.
33:03But I've been looking all over for our son and here he is.
33:06We wondered where this young man's father was.
33:10He's been taught well.
33:12Come.
33:12Very well.
33:18My son!
33:20We thought we'd last you forever.
33:25Come.
33:25Come, come.
33:28You are not allowed to be in the temple!
33:30Is this your woman?
33:31It's all right.
33:32It's all right.
33:42Do you know what you put your mother through?
33:44Your mother and me?
33:45You worried us to death.
33:47Don't you understand it?
33:48I thought I would die from worry.
33:50I'm sorry, mother.
33:51I...
33:51I...
33:52We were well on the way back and we have to turn around and go looking for you.
33:55I was in my father's house.
33:58Yes.
34:02We have to retrieve our load and feed the donkey.
34:04We have to retrieve our load and feed the donkey.
34:12You were there since we left?
34:14Yes.
34:16You were talking with the elders.
34:19Throughout the night?
34:20Yes.
34:21You tried their patience.
34:23No.
34:24They've welcomed me.
34:30What is it?
34:33We must go.
34:35Mother, I...
34:54I...
34:59It just came over me.
35:02How close it was.
35:05How close it was.
35:05You?
35:13Yes.
35:19You have to be with me.
35:21Oh...
35:21I...
35:25I...
35:27I...
35:28I...
35:28I...
35:34I...
35:41Her husband was gone.
35:44Now, only she knew who her son was.
36:07What will we do? I can't afford to send out for more wine.
36:13I'll be the laughing stock of Galilee.
36:16There's not a drop left.
36:18We'll be disgraced. We should just send everyone home now.
36:36They're out of wine.
36:39What is that to me, woman?
36:42They couldn't afford anymore.
36:52It's not the time yet to reveal anything.
36:58It's a wedding feast.
37:01They will be disgraced.
37:11What can we do?
37:22Tell them to come here.
37:48I overheard you just now. My son can help.
37:52Does he have wine?
37:53Come. Come with me.
38:00Get your servants.
38:04Fill all your empty jars with water.
38:07Why?
38:09Fill the jars and bring them here.
38:12I don't understand.
38:14Do what he's told you to do.
38:27This is my mother.
38:29And this is Mary of Magdala.
38:43So, here's your water.
38:46Dip your cup.
39:06This is a wonderful trick.
39:08What do you mean by that?
39:09Why have you saved your best for last?
39:11Most people serve their best at the start.
39:20Wine.
39:24Wine is here.
39:26Our best wine.
39:32Wine is here.
39:34Wine for everybody.
39:36Wine!
40:01Out of kindness, she had compelled him to reveal himself.
40:06She had set the wheels in motion.
40:10Everything was out in the open now.
40:12And nothing would ever be the same.
40:17A nation that's divided against itself will be destroyed.
40:22A city or a household divided against itself will crumble.
40:28If Satan drives out Satan, he is divided against himself.
40:33And then how can his nation stand?
40:36Why should we listen to you?
40:37You should listen to everything.
40:38We know who you are.
40:40We know your mother.
40:41That's her.
40:42Over there.
40:53Who is my mother?
40:57Whoever does the will of God is my mother.
41:25Her love was a mother's love.
41:27But only she understood that he had been sent to this world.
41:33His appearance was a message of love to humanity.
41:38So what would his destiny be?
41:41Even before he spoke about it, she must have known that his days on earth were numbered.
41:48Jesus of Nazareth, I'm speaking to you.
41:53And I'm hearing you.
41:55We've tried to speak to you on many occasions.
41:58But now you've forced us to confront you.
42:02I suppose that on those earlier occasions I wasn't hearing you.
42:07Take care.
42:10Speak respectfully before a Pharisee.
42:13Why?
42:13Tread carefully.
42:15You and your followers make a regular practice of breaking the laws.
42:20Which laws?
42:22Breaking the fast.
42:23Healing on the Sabbath.
42:24Your laws and your enforcement of them defy God's commandments.
42:28How dare you?
42:29You keep strict accounts of every last offering that comes to the temple.
42:34And who's made it?
42:36And how more or less it is than their last offering?
42:38But when it comes to matters of decency and compassion, you couldn't care less.
42:45Why should anyone place their trust in you?
42:50Vipers!
42:51Vipers, all of you!
42:53The ground beneath your feet is thinning, Jesus of Nazareth.
42:59The ground beneath your feet is thinning, Jesus of Nazareth.
43:48In the end, there was only one inevitable outcome.
43:54For Mary, the worst of all outcomes.
43:58Alleluia, Alleluia, Alleluia, Alleluia.
44:28Alleluia, Alleluia, Alleluia, Alleluia.
45:03Alleluia, Alleluia.
45:05Alleluia, Alleluia, Alleluia.
45:28You were given to me, and now you've been taken from me.
45:33How can the sun rise and set another day on this earth without you?
45:38How can my heart keep beating?
45:45Goodbye, my beloved son.
45:49Goodbye.
45:54Alleluia, Alleluia, Alleluia, Alleluia.
46:09Alleluia, Alleluia, Alleluia, Alleluia, Alleluia.
46:43Alleluia, Alleluia, Alleluia, Alleluia, Alleluia, Alleluia, Alleluia, Alleluia.
46:45They've taken him.
47:01Mother.
47:04Mother.
47:05Mother.
47:12Mother.
47:14All right.
47:45Is this a dream?
47:49It is me.
48:18You died.
48:20I'm with you.
48:22I'm always with you.
48:27I saw you die.
48:31I saw you suffer.
48:35I saw the wounds on your body.
48:38I saw what they did to you.
48:43I'm with you.
48:48And you will be with me.
48:52We will be together in my father's house, beyond the end of time, where there is nothing
49:02but the truth and the light, the ecstasy of salvation.
49:13Beyond the end of time, with you.
49:20You made everything possible.
49:25You brought salvation into this world.
49:32It was all because of you.
49:38You will be with me in heaven.
49:46Beyond the end of time.
49:51Together.
49:56Together.
50:11My son is home.
50:16My son is home.
50:21My son is home.
50:34It was said that she lived out her final years on this earth in Ephesus.
50:39It was an end of birth.
50:56And that was some end.
50:56Now for the moment, make you look ahead and look!
51:08This experience becomes a new life where there are shillings.
51:23My son.
51:32My son.
51:39My son.
52:09In the Christian faith, Mary is a pillar, a perfect soul who steps into her beloved son's shadow.
52:17When you examine her life closely, you start to see her terror, her astonishment, her confusion, her sorrow, her great
52:26love.
52:27It's a life unlike any other.
52:30So we made this episode an attempt to get closer to Mary, the mother of Jesus, and really, for so
52:37many of us all around the world, the mother of us all.
52:52So in this episode about Mary, the key was to try to confront the reality of Mary as a human
53:00being and as a mother.
53:01A lot of people find Mary, in a sense, more approachable than Jesus, right, who's after all, you know, the
53:06son of God.
53:07Mary is, you know, more like ourselves.
53:09And sometimes people feel more comfortable going to Mary first.
53:12But she's pointing always to her son.
53:14And she's not only the queen of heaven and the mother of God, she's also Mary of Nazareth, right?
53:19She's a woman who comes from a...
53:21She's a hometown Jewish woman from a backwater.
53:23Yeah, and that's why I thought she wouldn't stand out as to say this is a special person that you
53:27met.
53:28Maybe if you had a one-on-one with her and spoke and you look into the eyes and you
53:32begin to sense something.
53:34But the beauty of it is that it's part of all of us.
53:38I always thought, or at least the theology around how people talk about her, is that she said, yes, let
53:44it be done according to your will.
53:46And to have it be coming from this deep place of trust and faith in the Lord.
53:51A sister, Sister Janice Farnham, said this to me once, that in the Annunciation at the very end it says,
53:57and then the angel left her, right?
53:59She has this dramatic encounter with the angel at the Annunciation.
54:02And the time of faith, really, you know, until his birth and then Jesus' public ministry,
54:07is her sort of relying on those experiences that she had.
54:11I love that they showed her labor as like a real labor nut.
54:14Oh, no, that's the point.
54:16I'm going to lie down on the hay and, oh, boom!
54:19She's screaming in pain.
54:20And it shows that Jesus really did come into the world as we do.
54:26Yeah, and then also to take Mary through the years of Jesus' adolescence,
54:29to have Mary and Joseph react in a very natural way about missing their son.
54:36They lost a child.
54:38Everybody's leaving Jerusalem and he's, you know, 13 or whatever it is.
54:42And really get mad, I think.
54:43Well, I'm like a...
54:44Really angry.
54:45The anxiety of a parent is really in that episode.
54:48Yeah.
54:49So human.
54:51That's right.
54:51And then I hadn't noticed until watching this that that prefigures the crucifixion.
54:57The mother is losing her son.
54:58That's right.
54:58The gospel writers want us to understand Jesus as the son of God and want us to understand Mary.
55:03He's born without sin.
55:04Joseph as a saint.
55:05But it's a very human family, right?
55:07It still comes through.
55:08And she experiences this, as you were saying, Paul, this anxiety.
55:12We often call her Our Lady of Sorrows, but also Our Lady of Anxiety, too.
55:16I mean, the anxiety of after the Annunciation, right?
55:18What's Joseph going to do?
55:20The anxiety of what's this boy going to become?
55:22Just this constant level of wondering.
55:26And, you know, that great line of the gospel, she treasured all these things in her heart.
55:29You know, the original contemplative in the Christian life, and yet is able to accomplish
55:35all of this, right?
55:37The sense of her presence at so many points in Jesus' ministry.
55:42In the gospel, she comes in now and then, but of course she's there.
55:47It's a small community.
55:48People stick with their own.
55:50Her son is gifted.
55:52They love each other.
55:53This episode really brought that out to me in a way that I'd never felt before, that
55:56of course she knows, but it's just from, she's on the scene.
56:00We invented a scene in which the resurrected Jesus appears before Mary, which is not in
56:07the gospel.
56:08How much dramatic license could one take with these stories, with these people, especially
56:14when we're dealing with somebody from the gospels?
56:18Interestingly, in his spiritual exercises, St. Ignatius Loyola says that it may be piously
56:23believed that Jesus appeared to Mary after the resurrection.
56:27And I, as a Catholic and as a Christian, have to say, of course Jesus appeared to Mary.
56:33I would think, to me.
56:33Right, even though it's not in the gospels, right?
56:35Yeah.
56:35There's a lot of stuff that happened that, you know, was not recorded in the gospels.
56:38So I thought it did a great job of showing the arc of, you know, the most extraordinary
56:43life you could imagine.
56:44Amen.
56:45Amen.
56:46Amen.
56:51Amen.
56:51Amen.
56:53Amen.
56:55Amen.
56:55Amen.
56:55Amen.
57:03Amen.
57:07Amen.
