00:00have we uh were we trying to put you know the the genie back in the bottle so to speak
00:04they
00:05got sports betting legal in ohio and now all of a sudden it feels like with everything that
00:09happened with the cleveland guardians by the way is leading to this but the state of ohio may want
00:13to stop having online sports betting after having it legalized after all this time what's going on
00:18here yeah greg you had just this week three republican lawmakers in ohio unveiled what
00:25they're calling the save ohio sports act they had a press conference which had a lot of fanfare and
00:31really has been talked a lot about in the industry popping up in headlines not only do they want to
00:36get rid of online sports betting and limit it to casinos they want to get rid of all player props
00:41all live betting all parlays college betting and then limit bettors to a hundred dollars per day
00:47and eight bets within 24 hours so obviously very unfavorable terms for the industry here
00:54uh it comes you mentioned the uh the cleveland guardians case with uh the alleged uh you know
01:00manipulating pitches to profit from micro bets we saw the mlb come out with uh reform there and
01:06changing the kind of bets you can place on legal sports books uh but the lawmakers have been pretty
01:11vocal about you know the benefits of the industry in terms of taxes not outweighing uh what they're
01:16calling you know a mental health risk uh an impact on problem gambling in the state of ohio they've
01:22talked about uh calls to the ohio uh gambling hotline doubling or more than doubling rather
01:28since ohio legalized sports betting back in 2023 governor mike dewine has called it his biggest regret
01:34as governor he's uh doubled the tax rate on sports betting he's tried to uh double it again um but
01:41this
01:41really comes as you know the sports betting industry itself faces like you mentioned this potential
01:47blowback potential putting the genie back in the bottle with sports betting now i don't think this
01:51measure really has any chance of passing i think that's kind of the important thing to to talk about
01:56here but the fact that we are seeing now multiple states propose you know not just bet bands but
02:03getting rid of online sports betting altogether really shows um kind of the pushback that the
02:07industry is facing right now and uh kind of the crisis it has to make sure in the public spotlight
02:13um that it's being viewed accurately and uh that it's working with lawmakers on you know common
02:18sense proposals um like we've seen in a bunch of other states i'll note as well you know we talked
02:23about earlier this week louisiana having a similar prop bet ban proposal getting rid of it once they
02:29realized how much uh money they were going to lose in the state but more so how much it was
02:33just going
02:33to kind of move all of the potentially problematic bets that they're talking about here offshore or to
02:40prediction markets and places where the states really can't interact so again i don't really think
02:44this will go anywhere in the state but it is notable considering like you mentioned you know
02:48it's a state where the cleveland guardians sure case happened and it's also the governor has been
02:54very vocal about regretting uh legalizing sports betting plus ohio is a really big state so
