00:00Robert Michael Yates, Green Party candidate, 2068.
00:05There were eight spoiled papers.
00:08A huge result in a fan-it by-election touted as a referendum on Reform UK's first year at Kent
00:17County Council,
00:17with the Green Party Cliftonville candidate, Rob Yates, securing 2068 votes.
00:25That's a 301-vote lead on the right-wing Populist Party.
00:31Called after the previous Reform UK councillor for the area was put behind bars for domestic abuse,
00:38the by-election was hotly contested.
00:41But political opponents say this was no sign of a deep local love for the Greens.
00:48This is, at the moment, this is a protest vote.
00:50I mean, the scary thing is the rising of the far left is obviously coming up.
00:55But obviously, as I said, it's democracy.
00:57And if that's what people want, that's what people will get.
01:00It was an unusual campaign that felt more parliamentary than local authority.
01:06Two, three, yay!
01:07With senior figures like Reform UK's Robert Jenrick hitting the doorstep.
01:14And it was Green Party leader Zach Polanski that received the real rockstar reception on the eve of election day.
01:21And we'll win in Cliftonville as we elect Rob Yates as your next winner.
01:27Turning out hundreds at a grassroots venue to put last-minute jitters at ease.
01:34With a turnout of 37% and more than 5,000 votes cast, this was not a small win.
01:42Hope is the Green Party's motto.
01:44How high are those hopes for further electoral success in the county?
01:5011 years ago, Nigel Farge was walking down Cliftonville High Street.
01:53And now that's a green Cliftonville High Street.
01:56So, 100%, it's now Greens versus Reform in Kent.
02:00For Labour, this was a more bruising defeat.
02:04They came fourth in the contest.
02:06Concerns downplayed at the count.
02:09I'm actually really thrilled that we now don't have a Reform representative in Cliftonville.
02:17I think it's brilliant.
02:18Cliftonville have spoken.
02:19They've had enough of chaos and neglect.
02:21They've had enough of division and hate.
02:24Victory here will bring the number of Green councillors at County Hall to six.
02:30That means they're still the fourth party in the chamber.
02:33But symbolically, this election will be a wake-up call for Reform UK
02:38and the previous political establishment.
02:41Olly Leader in Cliftonville.
02:43This election will be a memory, being third party in Cliftonville.
02:43But there aren't many people on Easter and the other side in the chamber.
