Docking at the Historic Dockyard in Chatham, the "Full Circle" expedition will teach veterans sailing and raise awareness of the Invictus Games taking place next year.

Our Community Reporter, Henry Luck, reports.
Transcript
00:00Turn to Starboard has paid a visit to Chatham's historic dockyard to raise awareness of the skill of sailing.
00:11Sailing across the UK on the two tall ships, Pilyeu and Spirits of Falmouth, this cruise mission began in Falmouth
00:23last month.
00:24Intending to journey 2,000 miles and visit 22 ports around the country.
00:34It is amazing and actually each port is different. So I'm a lifelong sailor and that's why I decided to
00:40help the charity in my retirement.
00:43But the opportunities it's even given me, as someone who's sailed all over the world in different places,
00:49to actually explore the different ports on the journey around is already proving amazing.
00:55Coming up the river into Chatham yesterday was a unique experience.
00:58Being able to berth here in the dockyard is really fantastic.
01:01The group of trustees and the charity were so grateful to the dockyard for their support in this.
01:06Chatham Historic Dockyard is just the fifth stop for this group.
01:10And as you can imagine, by the sounds of the river Medway, the wind and the seagulls above, it's constantly
01:18an exciting adventure.
01:20As well as promoting the Invictus Games taking place next year, this charity is also raising awareness of how sailing
01:31can not only bring joy, but save lives.
01:35We say at the charity that turned a starboard that we get to change lives and very occasionally we get
01:43to save a life.
01:44In terms of helping people to address the challenges that they find in post-service life.
01:53Personally I think it's really, really important work.
01:57That thing of changing people's lives and occasionally saving a life, I don't think that's much more important in life.
02:04The organisation was even paid a visit from Medway Council's Vince Maple, who talked about how vital their work is,
02:14especially since Medway has an above average population of veterans.
02:20Well it's fantastic to be on board the Pellew, which is taking part in the turn to starboard full circle.
02:29This is a voyage of two ships around the UK. Fantastic to join the crew here.
02:36And it's really important for us here in Chatham and wider Medway, recognising our naval and kind of history on
02:43the water, to welcome such great vessels to our community.
02:48With this team's journey set to continue, there are hopes for smooth and merry sailing on their mission.
02:57Bon voyage turned to starboard.
03:01Henry Luck for KMTV in Medway.
03:05See you in the next episode of it at Monticello.
03:05Have a great day.
