00:36the mistakes were severe i trusted you with my dreams how dare you take my life away from me
00:47thousands of aspiring models stood in line for a chance to be america's next top model
00:52i'm from sightless missouri virginia south lake city utah just come one up we are actually
00:57looking to give someone a dynamic career tyra really was the holy grail
01:05tyra banks was the air that we breathed everyone wanted to be her but truth doesn't matter she was
01:15a hardcore the crazy the models were the better ratings they got on television
01:32it was a tv show tyra was trying to create great television in 2020 top model clips started showing
01:55up on social media yo tyra and her little crew they were hella problematic gen z god bless them
02:01were like hey this is bad we are actually going to switch your ethnicity this is racist this is all
02:09people see easy read beautiful color girl this is abusive
02:17tyra declined many requests to give a public statement which is why her essence was so significant
02:23i refuse to have my legacy be about some stuff linked together on the internet
02:34you're breaking the girls down for public consumption i was rooting for you we were all
02:39rooting for you how dare you i had never shaved my head like that before then they throw you out

02:45the world and they're like yeah feed you to the walls they're not looking for the next model they could
02:49care less all tyra is doing is counting her money it wasn't a modeling competition it was psychological

03:28i was like mom i'm going on america's next top model i get to go to new york
03:32and then i was like surprise you're going to be down the street from skid row
03:39boy that was sketchy times i guess it was um maybe it was cheaper maybe it was cheaper
03:52tyra banks was not just a model she was a superstar
04:01top model was a pop culture sensation tyra considers herself an ugly duckling there's this one image that
04:09she uses consistently anytime she talks about body images she always starts with that photo it wasn't just
04:14that gawky cute skinny oh she's so gawky and young it was i looked ill people thought i was sick

04:19used to stare at me she was discovered around 17 and then she made her way to paris
04:27and then took over the runways from there
04:32tyra was a victoria's secret angel she was on the cover of the sports illustrated swimsuit issue
04:40but by the mid-2000s tyra was no longer a 17 year old skinny little model and so for tyra's
04:48career to
04:48continue she had to grow outside of just the modeling world the early 2000s was like the wild wild west
04:57not just for the the real world survivor american idol were exploding in popularity and tyra banks
05:09wanted to be a part of it she had gone on to do some acting some bit parts but she
05:14never really made it
05:15big the last time tyra was in my memory as part of like popular culture was when she was dating

05:25weber and i can't imagine that the tyra banks would like to go out on being just chris weber's
05:32girlfriend ex-girlfriend tyra wanted to extend her career and extend her visibility the entertainment
05:41industry has always been very skeptical of models and whether or not they can act and so it was really
05:48smart for tyra to say the best role for me to play is me everybody out here wants to be
05:55america's next
05:56top model way into the camera because i'm involved in being part of the fashion industry for so long
06:04it's quality control it's not going to be like a joke the person that wins is going to go from
06:08being
06:08nobody to being the star in eight weeks everyone wanted to be the next tyra banks but the show was
06:17not
06:17only about trying to be a model it was what happens when you take a dozen strangers and make them
06:22live
06:22together kind of show i went in there so innocent i thought i've never been a model before i'm just
06:29learning who are these fabulous girls in this world that i want to be a part of a lot of
06:34them were just
06:35out of high school they thought that they would have the chance to have mentorship under tyra and
06:40actually move towards a successful modeling career it happened really really fast here i am in the house
06:47i live with the girls 24 7 every day really started off with tyro showing up when it was time
06:54to do the
06:55competition and that's when we had an idea of what the day was going to be like so today you
07:01guys are
07:01shooting a commercial so this is where your stardom is solidified what's lovely it's formulaic and we love
07:08a formula first there's always like a mini challenge or some sort of weird test you'll be stepping on
07:14and off a moving carousel usually something that is loosely applied to the world of modeling you're
07:25gonna have to balance these items on top of your head and then one of the most defining things about
07:34top model is the makeover episode it usually comes around as a third to fourth episode depending
07:43tyra comes in and is like all right you guys basically you guys all look bad i know how to
07:49make you look good and it did seem like the makeovers were engineered to make at least three people cry
07:56i'm like a boy right now yeah it's a little oliver twist but when they style it it's your makeup
08:01done it's gonna be so pretty gotta trust me okay the makeup episodes every season were appointment
08:07television and not because they were good they want to see if you react excessively to stress
08:15to make a good show and so in the fasting process they asked personality questions to see whether or not
08:22you are a volatile person we have a psychologist who comes and evaluates them even before they're chosen
08:30the psych evaluations were no joke i was in a room for two to four hours they would ask have
08:36you ever
08:37thought i wanted to commit suicide or hurt somebody hurt yourself either you're depressed
08:41it also shows tyra do we think they can handle the pressure
08:46i don't like to cast for conflict we just cast strong personalities
08:53on my psychological evaluation one of the questions that they asked was about my childhood
08:59it did make me feel uncomfortable but then i was like well this is reality tv so i shrugged it
09:05off as
09:05nothing the show is pretty transparent about how it wants to mine the backstories of its contestants
09:14tyra is trying to make a show that's entertaining even if it is a little exploitative so what's this
09:20about your relationship with your mom they kept trying to pick and get more information
09:25about my mom my mom was my abuser my mom is the one that tortured me my whole life
09:35they ask what kind of abuse how do you think your mom would feel right now
09:44the show is shocking audiences by putting not just explosive confrontations on screen
09:51you're basically presenting yourself like a moron okay and what are you doing alcoholic
09:56bitch but also asking a lot of its contestants to perform their kind of trauma on screen
10:02you might as well just
10:12i wasn't eating correctly i wasn't sleeping
10:17and i probably had a couple too many glasses of wine
10:24i was just like always one moment away from like fully almost like losing it
10:32because they were weaponizing my childhood trauma they just with me emotionally
10:40i was sleeping outside on the porch well that's because she's drunk that girl has a lot of issues
10:50tyra made me look absolutely crazy
10:54i felt like she decided we're gonna make a mockery of you and then the whole world on top of
10:59that is
11:00gonna call you crazy and make fun of you corinne calls me an alcoholic
11:05bitch that set the tone of what i've been called around the globe for over 15 years
11:13i was set up to be publicly humiliated on repeat forever
11:22i got into the editing bay and i was like i loved it fun putting it together editing it
11:31not only is tyra on set but tyra goes to every single editing session
11:40she really sits there and knows exactly what she wants to see fold out on tape
11:45so do you care to comment on ken mock
11:50i managed to dodge that question very well didn't i um
11:55no absolutely not tyra control freak i don't know what you're talking about
12:02anyone who likes to think that tyra is just the face of the show
12:06i'm here to tell you that that is a complete lie
12:10tyra is the puppeteer that was being psychologically tortured for the entertainment of the world
12:21and for tyra banks and the network's profit and she did the same thing to all the other girls
12:35so are you going to come back next season to uh america's top of all
12:38of course until they get sick of me or i say something wrong and they fire me
13:01the most important judge is tyra but you really wanted somebody that was going to come in that was
13:10going to kind of be a lightning rod someone who is not going to censor herself i'm janice dickinson
13:16i am the world's first supermodel i coined the term ask anybody it was me haha
13:26i cast janice she was 100 my idea i definitely wanted her because i was like you know what she
13:33seems like she's going to be really honest and really tell it like it is i had no idea she's
13:37going
13:37to be as honest and as tell it like it is as she is looks like you landed from another
13:41planet because
13:42you have so much teeth you deranged this photograph looks like the batteries died in her vibrator
13:50the producers of america's next top model especially tyra were begging me to be harsher
13:56and cruel like simon cowell was on american idol
14:02tyra was able to allow janice to be the bully in a way that gave tyra plausible deniability
14:07it's like a hitchcock film go back and forth back and forth really fast to see what i mean
14:16if she doesn't want to be the one to say you look fat and disgusting your thighs she doesn't have
14:21to say it because janice is going to be willing to take the lump on that you got to work
14:26on the thighs
14:26that's the booty thing you got to kind of you really watch the diet next says i was taken back
14:33by the judges in their comments one minute they're saying oh you're just so beautiful the next minute
14:39oh your body look at this you have all these issues yoana has a lovely face i think she needs

14:44definitely work on her body i think you know i wouldn't want to see her in a swimsuit it almost
14:49felt like you're in this vortex of a narcissistic relationship going from the love bombing back to
14:55getting devalued at the drop of the hat see your back juana has one problem and it's the midriff
15:06i didn't know what my backside really looked like and to have cameras really zoning in on that and to
15:12be so young and to have you know other people commenting there was a level of i want to say
15:19coolness at that time that you wouldn't be able to get away with saying in this moment why don't we
15:24go
15:24around the room and talk about imperfection what do you think yours is
15:29it really kind of messed with my self-esteem
15:35if you're sporting a gut then you turn to the side and disguise it really honestly putting that on tv
15:43was really dangerous because i was so so thin i've had so many people message me and say that they
15:51developed eating disorders after watching and um it sucks thank you i'm really very interesting in
16:01the early aughts the biggest thing that i remember about tyra was that people kept talking about how
16:06curvy she was i represent the modeling world is a body that's fuller it's thicker it's got a booty
16:13in this industry yeah i'm like 20 pounds heavier than these girls girl her body type is not that of
16:21like a 2000s era model like a cape moss skinny heroin chic tyra was not that this is the era
16:29where
16:29the idea was the double zero can you be able to wear low-rise pants and you know not have
16:35love handles
16:36when tyra would say stuff to people about their bodies it felt like it was coming from like a
16:42place like deep in there where she was like i haven't i haven't dealt with this yet so let me
16:47just
16:47put it on you instead i got the same stomach girl but i know how to hold it in you
16:51got to work what you
16:52got it seems like tyra is sort of working her out on other people she's been explicit that she was
16:58viewed as too big for the runway and tyra really projected a lot of her traumas onto women who
17:04weren't necessarily ready to receive it immediately i was like they're going to talk about my weight
17:11that's going to be the thing you are a little perhaps nervous about your body every question
17:18every thing we did got tied back to my weight when i got the makeover i looked great it has
17:24since
17:24become the karen haircut it was like that short blonde with the at the time it was cool but they
17:31were like are you worried that the short hair is going to make you look fatter what is it like
17:37being
17:37the biggest girl i realized that i had been brought to this show to be other like they were all
17:46the ideal
17:46they were all what everyone in america every woman should aspire to look like and i was something else
17:55it just confirmed every bad thought that an eating disorder had already planted in my head
18:02there would always be a plus size model or two and they were kind of cannon fodder it was on
18:09one hand
18:10saying we want women of all sizes but then when there were women of all sizes treating the women of
18:15different sizes like do you know your plus size suffer gut baby anything hanging out it looks nasty they
18:22were just recruiting these women who weren't traditional model size and then throwing them
18:27to the wolves do you think that i'm going to be able to get a rack like this loaded with
18:32clothes
18:32in your size you don't think that you realize how this whole modeling thing works
18:38when she came in sarah was openly a plus size model but then over the course of filming sarah lost
18:44weight
18:45and that became a problem i lost quite a bit of weight people have said that and
18:49and i haven't been trying to but people keep mentioning it sarah was told that you're pretty
18:55despite this thing and by virtue of what production has you doing you lose weight and they hold that
19:03against you the judges feel like you sarah your place in the industry is kind of confusing right now
19:09because models are so so so skinny or they're plus size was told i was too thin for a plus
19:17size model
19:17but too fat to be in america's next top model tyra banks can't shake up standards of beauty
19:25while ultimately crowning the person who suits the standard of beauty here she is reinforcing the
19:32status quo when she promised us the opposite
19:35so when you create an environment that you told me was going to be better than this
19:40and then you make it worse that's up
19:54one of the things the viewers never really realized we were going through is the amount of
20:00deliberation and the feedback from the judges we might see a clip of one comment i think it's
20:06the worst picture i've ever seen in my life your hair looks like a cockatoo there and here
20:13but we would be in front of the judges for hours the elimination days were usually
20:19minimum 12 hours sometimes 18 until two three four in the morning on the first day one of the crew
20:27members warned us they were like look a girl faints every week
20:35so if you feel like you're feeling faint don't be a hero raise your hand and someone will come help
20:40you
20:40and i remember i thought like oh my god these skinny bitches can't even stand for a while like and
20:47they're fainting first day it was me i had to raise my hand and i almost went down
20:53all of us were sleep deprived all of us weren't able to eat enough food they know what they're
20:58doing it's all intentional
21:03if you can get through the pressure and look like a model and get through judging and get through us
21:09being evil just knock you down and build you back up then you have what it takes to become america's
21:16yes model the rules in the house were challenging lights were always on even when you were ready to
21:23go to bed there was no cell phone usage you were not allowed to leave the house no windows were
21:29allowed
21:29to be opened if we didn't follow the rules we would be punished they could take away our books take
21:36away
21:36our ipods so we would have to sit in silence for hours you're squeezing into an apartment with so many
21:44girls and only one bathroom's working and the rules are we will not film you in the shower or in
21:50the
21:50toilet stalls if there's only one of you but the second there's two of you we can film you and
21:56also
21:56you guys should shower together for the environment
22:02you're almost an animal for spectator sport versus a human being felt like it was an experiment
22:10to see how easy we could crack and break
22:15for the most part on my season the producers just wanted to instigate conflict but the photo shoot
22:22in africa was something else you're going to be dancing with three hot guys what a lot of people didn't
22:31see was that like behind the scenes the male model bikini was actually
22:38hard core flirting with me telling me that he was going to come to the states and find me and
22:44he
22:45wanted to be with me and it was it was just a lot did you need that sorry sorry i
22:49gotta go right in the
22:49wardrobe after this this is so cringe to watch gotta break this out
22:57he was like grunting as he was dancing with me and he stood a lot closer to me than the
23:01other models he
23:02had on this tiny little loin cloth uh fabric and then it just got to the point where i realized
23:08that he actually had an erection what's the issue i know it's not about feeling comfortable but
23:15hearing moaning it just threw me off moaning where like on me like i'm sorry i just didn't feel
23:21comfortable it was flipped into me being a bit of a diva we're here in a professional situation
23:29there are like 50 of us sitting here right right we we're going with the flow when your space is
23:36invaded and you're put in a tough situation it almost feels even more sinister
23:47to be in front of everyone i really thought that i would be applauded for speaking up for myself
23:57what's even crazier to me about that scenario is that it's not a real job kenya wasn't a girl who
24:04had to get the job done so that she can pay her bills next week this was a fake shoot
24:10on a fake
24:11show and there are people in charge who can do something about it there has to be a way that
24:18you
24:18can handle it you know you have to be able to be in control like with your feminine wiles like
24:22boy
24:22you best to back up for knock you outside the head but you do it in a fun way where
24:26he knows to back
24:27the heck up but it doesn't really put static in the air because then it makes you uncomfortable tyra
24:32banks reprimanded you for not handling real sexual harassment on a fake shoot you have to wonder what
24:41tyra went through to think that that's the way you handle a situation like that but then my empathy has
24:46to go out the window because you visited upon that girl something that was probably traumatic to you
24:55it's just so interesting like watching it back to little kenya because tyra's a grown woman at this
25:01time i was 19 years old and it should have never unfolded that way
25:12moments like what jada endured are particularly frustrating because ultimately what you're doing
25:19is a little bit of a humiliation ritual do you think oh my god okay i say i don't like
25:24jada's
25:25partner nacho tells jada that he's even like black girls that man just was like i don't want to kiss
25:30i don't really like black girls again a fake shoot with a real racist in a fake scenario that you
25:41all
25:41created well you're gonna have to give him a kiss to make him love some black girls because what do
25:46they say once they go black they don't go back there you go jada you can't cry because we don't
25:52have
25:52time to fix your makeup i can't do this she expressed her discomfort over and over and over again
26:03and they made her do this fake commercial with a real racist you told me that this is the guy
26:09that
26:09said that he didn't want to kiss a black girl he doesn't like black girls oh he's just an extra
26:14that
26:15should not have stopped her from doing the job that she was sent there to do at what point do
26:21you get
26:21to put your hands up and say enough is enough i can actually believe that tyra thinks that
26:35representation feels important i want to be out like i'm gay and i am i'm really proud of it but
26:42in
26:42the wrong hands is representation enough it absolutely is not i think there's starting
26:47of being proud like i'm black and proud you know what i mean but i'm not like walking on the
26:51red
26:51carpet i'm black yeah i'm proud one of the things that queer phobia kind of generates is this this
26:57idea that like of a looming predator i can't be safe around you because you are attracted to my gender
27:01therefore anything you do is automatically sexual can you think i'm beautiful yeah
27:10it becomes again this contradictory message in which it's we want to support queer inclusivity
27:15but we also need to somehow make a spectacle of it at the same time
27:21in those early days you couldn't find lesbians anywhere on television outside of ellen
27:26and you certainly couldn't find a black lesbian we know you're a lesbian how do you feel about
27:30expressing that on national television people never assume i'm gay i thought my sexuality
27:37this was something between me and everybody that was producing the project but tyra banks choosing to
27:41say that i was gay and putting that out there without talking to me first i was floored we're
27:47talking in the 90s 2000s what do you think about that time being openly homosexual was actively exposing
27:54yourself to danger i just wondered what did she think was going to happen to me afterwards
28:00i would get random calls from churches telling me to come back to the lord
28:05i didn't understand how churches got my number if you were to ask tyra i'm sure she would say well
28:12i gave you a platform but a platform it's not safety it's scrutiny it's surveillance it's inviting
28:19millions of people to have judgments on how you live your life one of the first representations of
28:27a trans woman on television was on top model but the other girls weren't very nice to isis growing up
28:34in the south you don't exactly run into a ishi every day you walk around like that in a small
28:39town you
28:39were shot the transphobia is harder to swallow than some of the other stuff because there wasn't really
28:47any other trans representation on the show and so it really does feel like isis is being picked on
28:52i think tyra's belief is i should get a pat on the back simply for the idea of acknowledging that
29:00a trans person exists and is worth talking to but if you are someone with visible marginal identities
29:08there's little reward in being the primary person to break a boundary you're the person who gets
29:13all the backlash that she actually used to be he and i think still is tyra wasn't trying to help
29:21these girls you're trying to create a great tv show i think in the first couple seasons it tried
29:31to take itself a little bit seriously and then it just got like wacky these are giant madagascar hissing
29:37cockroaches oh he's going crazy we were put through things that would never happen in real life
29:42so you girls are going to be shooting with a bull listen i think there is some thrill in watching
29:54pretty people be tortured these girls have to be prepared to do almost anything to sell a garment
30:00i'm freaking bleeding
30:04america's next top model is also a social experiment what people are willing to do for fame what they're
30:11willing to enjoy to get it you find out what someone's fear is and then you find a way to
30:15exploit it on television if you find out the girl is afraid of spiders guess what she's going to be
30:21doing definitely afraid a photo shoot with spiders she's calling really they get a tissue for her please
30:30they made these models work with snakes take rest take rest
30:36okay okay dangling over a pit probably was more of a liability
30:46than an actual shot for a magazine but i thought there's a modeling contract eventually
30:53that you're going to be able to have just go for it
30:58there were a lot of things done in top model that they got wrong
31:06and one challenge got it very wrong i think hulu banned this one now someone should have refused
31:14to do that and yet no one did
31:24the got milk challenge photo shoot was shocking degrading it was just stupid
31:33that episode there are literally people in blackface on tv in the 2000s the challenge
31:41here really is taking on the persona of that other ethnicity everyone seems kind of like okay
31:49girl i guess i'll do this because i'd like to win the show but i remember watching that as it
31:55was airing and being like i don't know man this doesn't seem i don't think we should be doing this
32:02michelle an eskimo kenya korean britney an african american woman i think tyra thinks that she's
32:11introducing a conversation about us all being one and what are the things that bring us together versus
32:15bring us apart but instead it's like a caricature of existing racist tropes it should be noted that so
32:22many of the creatives working on top model were people of color tyra a black woman can mock an asian
32:32man they knew what they were doing was edgy but they viewed it as edgy and not wrong
32:43at the time because tyra banks is an african american woman and she's wanting me to become
32:49to transport me into an african american woman i truly didn't see anything of it none of us did
32:55and whatever tyra says us do we do no one wants to go home as a 19 year old you
33:01don't really have
33:02the courage at that time to say hey this is uh you know isn't politically correct or you know whatever
33:09you may feel because there was a potential for you to go home and for this whole dream
33:13and opportunity to just be over tyra had the ability to make or break you we're all scared of tyra
33:22i think that the race swap challenges that the show did a couple of times in some ways have become
33:28a little bit of a scapegoat so that contemporary reality television doesn't have to grapple with its
33:33own issues of racism it's not so much that the race swap itself as a challenge was inherently
33:39offensive although it's like it's offensive the worst thing about that challenge was the judging panel
33:45and the ways that they seem to understand racial identity such that it's a thing that can be
33:51authentically performed brittany sister you look like a black girl girl like i was feeling it oh i loved
34:01it what's one thing if you take a young white woman and put some dark makeup on her in an
34:07afro wig
34:08it's another thing to say you need to embody blackness and celebrate her for you know i don't
34:14know just sort of acting like she has an attitude you realize the show wants to celebrate blackness
34:21but only a very limited idea of what blackness can be that's that ghetto walk if she took a little
34:26bit
34:27of hoochie out of that ghetto walk that would have been naomi tyra seemed weirdly obsessed with and
34:32repulsed by all things ghetto like obvious markers of like lower middle class lower class black people
34:41but then tyra always went out of her way to cast women who were coded in that way do you
34:50really think
34:50you can have a cover girl contract with the gap in your mouth yes why not this is all people
34:54see
34:54it's easy to reach beautiful color girl it's not marketable i remember feeling really uncomfortable
34:59by this idea that danny's gap needed to be fixed the show seemed to be equating her gap with a
35:07particular type of blackness that was undesirable within that industry being unapologetically working
35:14class and black at the same time it prohibits you from being able to be viewed as relatable so as
35:20a
35:20result you're going to be consistently punished for being a product of your own circumstances
35:26chelsea we love your teeth we'd love to exaggerate back and take you a little bit more to lauren
35:32and then to try to expand this white girl's teeth on camera is not a contradiction that feels out of
35:41place at all with tyra tyra banks as a black woman there are many things that she did that she
35:52knew
35:52better with your skin texture being an african-american woman it should be like butter at the retouching
35:58session your photo was the hardest that we had to do there's no way that i believe that it's lost
36:04on tyra
36:04how offensive and hurtful it is to call a black woman especially a dark-skinned one ashy when she
36:10said my skin texture was too rough she knew my skin texture wasn't too rough she knew what she was
36:14doing
36:17as a black woman in high fashion i'm sure tyra was made to feel ghetto lower class inferior and so
36:27i can imagine that has a lot to do with her obsession with black presentation in different spaces but
36:35the thing is your job is to get therapy not 20 years of abusive television those girls didn't deserve that
36:53the media really had a field day with this idea of tyra banks and naomi campbell beefing behind the
36:59scenes for years supermodel tyra banks was in the middle of a bitter feud with another top model naomi
37:06campbell tyra felt like she was bullied by naomi campbell that there wasn't room for two black girls in
37:13the industry i think i've been a serious victim of pitting one black model against another my mom
37:19would look at fashion magazines it's just iman that's all you saw and then it was just beverly
37:24johnson and it was just naomi campbell do you remember that times article beyonce's first solo
37:31effort is good but she's no ashanti that's what this is it's not just tyra who makes the marginalized
37:40community feel like there can only be one it really made me angry as i'm saying in order for
37:47me to be successful i have to knock someone out so that means when i get really up there that
37:51somebody's going to come and knock me out i think she really did feel like she was sort of um
37:54competing with naomi when you're presented as the other person's replacement maybe you do get mean and
38:01maybe you do get jealous and maybe you do get catty but i think tyra's been working out her naomi
38:08rivalry with every black woman she's come across in the 30 years since i don't even think tyra really
38:15wants any of us to become stars tyra didn't want any competition tyra was breaking the girls down
38:22so she could feel better about herself she went off on one girl that was so frightening
38:29i thought i was going to get up and like hold her down
38:32be quiet that's what is wrong with you stop it i have never in my life yelled at a girl
38:39like this
38:40when my mother yells at this it's because she loves me i was rooting for you we were all rooting
38:45for you
