00:00We just left the arraignment of Mr. Amatizlat, who has been accused of murder in the second degree several times.
00:07This was really pandemonium. This was a burning of fire. This was a house that was on fire.
00:18And what led up to the fire is really quite disturbing.
00:22This is a man who, we allege, walked in and out of a house several times before he went to
00:27a gas station,
00:28asked for a lighter after buying a beer, asked for a lighter, was told that the lighter cost money, got
00:36matches, went back.
00:37We allege that he put a piece of paper that was on fire into a garbage and just let it
00:44burn.
00:44And he intentionally let it burn. And four people were killed.
00:48Three people died of smoke inhalation, including a three-year-old child, by the way, who was in the house.
00:54There was one person who died because he was so dramatic and it was so painful that he jumped out
01:00the window and died from his fractures.
01:03Two firefighters, a lieutenant, ran into the building while everybody was trying to get out,
01:08doing the job that they do every single day as firefighters to save people's lives.
01:13And they ended up in the hospital after the second floor collapsed and they fell through.
01:19So, this defendant was remanded by the judge.
01:23We appreciate the fact that he understood the gravity of the situation.
01:27And we intend on moving forward, pressing charge, convicting him,
01:32and making sure that he's held accountable for one of the greatest crimes that this borough has seen in a
01:38very long time.
