STRAW is the kind of movie where bad luck doesn’t just happen. It accumulates. One brutal day after another, and a hardworking single mother gets pushed past her limits, until her “I’ll handle it” mindset turns into something far more desperate. No secret mastermind. No cinematic escape route. Just the slow grinding pressure of life, plus the terrifying math of what you can and can’t fix in time.

The plot works like a pressure cooker with the lid left slightly open. Events stack up, misunderstandings stick, and suddenly she’s not just surviving. She’s being treated like the problem. It’s tense in a grounded, ugly way, even when it occasionally feels like the film is daring you to look away.

With Rotten Tomatoes at 53% and a Metascore around the midline, it’s not exactly universally loved. But if you want bleak realism with a sharp edge, this one is worth your attention.

Manchmal reicht ein wirklich mieser Tag, um alles zu kippen. STRAW zeigt eine alleinerziehende Mutter, die schon im normalen Chaos-Modus lebt und dann noch eine Eskalationsstufe draufsetzt. Keine großen Verschwörungen. Nur Pech, Druck und diese heimliche Erkenntnis, dass man irgendwann für eine Entscheidung bezahlt, die niemand wirklich sehen will.

Der Film zieht keine Handschellen aus dem Nichts. Er macht eher das Gegenteil: Er schiebt die Realität so lange zurecht, bis aus „Kann passieren“ ein „Okay, das war jetzt nicht geplant“ wird. Am Ende steht nicht nur die Frage nach Schuld im Raum. Sondern nach Verzweiflung. Und ja, das Ganze wirkt stellenweise so schief und hart, dass man sich fragt, ob es Absicht ist. Bei 53% bei Rotten Tomatoes und einem Metascore im Mittelfeld ist das vielleicht auch genau der Punkt.
