Morocco's Tanger Med Port emerges as key hub as Middle East crisis disrupts global shipping
Transcript
00:06Africa's largest container port, Tanji Amat, is at the center of a major shift in global
00:12shipping.
00:13Rising security risks and key waterways are forcing major carriers to move away from traditional
00:18routes through the Suez Canal.
00:21Morocco is strengthening its position as a key player in global trade, leveraging its
00:25strategic location at the Strait of Gibraltar, one of the world's most important and secure
00:30maritime corridors.
00:31At a time of rising regional instability and increasing risks along major shipping routes,
00:37Morocco is emerging as a reliable transit hub, ensuring the continuity of maritime flows between
00:41Europe, Africa, the Americas, and Asia.
00:45Tanji Amat is benefiting from shifting global shipping routes, serving as a key hub for transit
00:50and maritime services.
00:51And in these conditions, rising shipping costs are a natural consequence of longer routes
00:56and higher operating expenses.
00:59Instead, vessels are taking the longer route around the Cape of Good Hope, adding up to
01:04two weeks to transit times, increasing fuel consumption and putting pressure on global
01:10shipping capacity.
01:12What we are witnessing today is not just a temporary shift in shipping routes, but a real stress test
01:17for logistics infrastructure across Africa, at the center of its Tangier Med port.
01:22The diversion of part of global trade toward the Cape of Good Hope places Morocco under a dual
01:27strategic responsibility.
01:29On one hand, the crisis is reinforcing the port's position as an indispensable hub in the Mediterranean
01:35and North Atlantic.
01:36Shipping companies are already passing on the impact, introducing new charges, such as war risk
01:43and deviation fees, which can range from $1,500 to $3,300 per container and even higher for
01:50specialized cargo.
01:51A number of vessels from the Gulf countries have arrived at the Tangier Med port, as well
01:55as the specific terminals in Nador port, reflecting the diversity of Morocco's entry points.
02:01Morocco is not limited to Tangier Med alone.
02:04The port is part of a broader integrated national port system.
02:08While the impact is still developing, early indicators suggest a rise in vessel traffic at Moroccan ports.
02:15The key challenge will be handling high volumes without congestion, while maintaining efficiency
02:21and turnaround times.
