00:30Since its war with Hezbollah began
00:32More than 200 people are reported dead
00:35In an assault that is prompting Iranian officials
00:38To maybe withdraw from the fragile ceasefire
00:40Agreed with the US
00:41We'll speak to our correspondent in Lebanon
00:44And after very frank talks at the White House
00:48NATO Secretary General Mark Kudutse
00:49Has said Donald Trump was
00:51Clearly disappointed that US allies
00:53Had refused to join his war against Iran
00:56Relations are awkward with NATO allies
00:59With the US president calling NATO a one-way street
01:02And warning Europeans to start learning
01:04How to defend themselves
01:05And just four days to go
01:08Until Hungary's parliamentary election
01:10Shaping up to be the biggest test yet
01:12Of Viktor Orban's 16 years in power
01:15From smear campaigns
01:16To allegations of foreign interference
01:18The campaign has been toxic
01:20And the European Union is holding its breath
01:23We'll have the latest from the Hungarian capital
01:25But first, a two-week truce between the US and Iran
01:28Hangs on a thread this morning
01:30Despite yesterday's victory lap
01:32By some from the US administration
01:34For more, I'm joined here in the studio
01:36By our US politics expert
01:37That's Stefan Krobey
01:38Good morning, Stefan
01:39Good morning, Maeve
01:40So we're seeing the ceasefire already
01:42Beginning to unravel
01:44And the Strait of Hormuz closed again
01:46Are we back at square one?
01:47Absolutely, Maeve
01:48This is a ceasefire
01:49In which fire has not ceased
01:52I mean, for starters
01:53Israel is still firing rockets into Iran
01:56To say nothing to laying waste
01:58To half of Lebanon
01:59Which prompted the Italian foreign minister yesterday
02:02To warn against a second Gaza
02:05As you said, this has prompted Iran
02:07To close the Strait of Hormuz again
02:10And there are conflicting reports
02:12As to whether some ships could make it
02:14And could pass yesterday
02:17And finally, we're hearing reports
02:19From Israeli, from Iranian airstrikes
02:23Against some of the Gulf states
02:25And of course, what is in the deal?
02:27That is the big question as well
02:29There's a lot of confusion
02:30About what's exactly in it
02:32Well, that's the multi-million dollar question
02:34Absolutely
02:34There is confusion as to whether
02:36The English and the Farsi texts
02:38Are actually identical
02:40For example, Iran claims
02:42That it includes Israel and Lebanon
02:44And Washington denies that
02:46And that's, I mean, that's a basic point
02:49And a political problem for Donald Trump
02:53Is that Iran walks away with more
02:56Than it had under a similar agreement
02:58Under the Obama administration
03:00Today, Iran maintains control
03:03Of the Strait of Hormuz
03:05And the deal turns that waterway
03:06Basically into a giant tool booth
03:09That's why oil executives
03:11Have reached out to the White House
03:13Complaining about this
03:14They were saying
03:15Well, we didn't have to pay any tolls
03:18Before the war started
03:20And now we have to
03:21We thought we were winning the war
03:23So that's a big problem
03:24And there's a lot to talk about
03:26On Friday
03:27When peace talks officially start
03:29In Islamabad, Pakistan
03:30Thank you so much for that update
03:33Well, on the back of the news
03:35Of the ceasefire yesterday
03:36Global oil prices did fall sharply
03:39And stock markets soared
03:40But stocks are in free fall again
03:42This morning
03:43As the ceasefire looks set to unravel
03:45To hear what this all means for us
03:47We can now bring in
03:48The economist and professor
03:49Maria de Martis
03:50Good morning, Maria
03:51Thank you so much for joining us
03:52So first, yesterday
03:54We saw markets very optimistic
03:55But this reaction was premature
03:57Given how fragile the ceasefire is
04:00Do you think investors
04:00Got a little bit ahead of themselves?
04:04Well, I think everybody's looking
04:05For good news
04:06And that is true for investors as well
04:08The fact that we do have a truce
04:09At the possibility of peace talks
04:11Is a very good idea
04:12And we are looking forward to that
04:13But everything remains so fragile
04:17And of course we have Israel
04:18That has an independent view
04:20On in terms of what this peace
04:22Might actually mean
04:23So the whole thing is extremely uncertain
04:25And will remain so
04:26The volatility that it implies
04:27For markets will remain so
04:29I'm afraid, at least in the short run
04:30And as tensions escalate again
04:32How quickly will prices spike up
04:33Do you think?
04:35Oh, I think the experience
04:36Of the past few weeks
04:37But also the experience
04:38We've had back in 2022
04:40Show that prices can be
04:41Extremely volatile in both directions
04:43So I think, you know
04:44To the extent that peace deal
04:46Might actually fail
04:46We're going to see a huge spike again
04:48I hope this will not be the case
04:51But volatility really is
04:52The order of the day
04:53So what will this mean
04:54For European households?
04:55Our viewers tuning in this morning
04:56Should they expect
04:57High inflation?
04:59Well, we see it already
05:00In the petrol station
05:01Where we go and reload
05:02Our cars
05:03I think we've seen it there
05:04We might see it
05:06In our electricity bill
05:07Depending on what kind
05:08Of contract we have
05:08And there are big differences
05:09Between both contracts
05:11And between countries
05:12In the EU
05:12But then after that
05:14We already see that
05:15The European Commission
05:15Is downgrading its growth estimate
05:17For 2026
05:19Irrespective of what happens
05:21From now on
05:22And is actually upgrading
05:23Its inflation forecast
05:25For 2026
05:26By about 1%
05:27So yes, the economic cost
05:29Is already there
05:29And of course
05:30Whatever happens
05:31Some long-term damage
05:32Is already done
05:32Maria Demartise
05:33Thank you so much
05:34For joining us this morning
05:35Here on Europe Today
05:37Now moving on
05:38The United Nations
05:39Has warned that
05:40The scale of the killing
05:41In Israeli strikes
05:42Against Lebanon
05:43Is quote horrific
05:44They've called
05:45On the international community
05:46To help end
05:47The unfolding nightmare
05:48Italy and France
05:50Have already spoken out
05:51And for their part
05:52The European Commission
05:52Has told Israel
05:54To stop the violence
05:55And respect
05:55The UN peacekeeping mission
05:57Speaking yesterday
05:58At a press conference
05:59Here in Brussels
06:00They said they call
06:00On Israel to cease
06:02The operation
06:03And respect
06:03Lebanon's sovereignty
06:04And territorial integrity
06:06For more
06:07We can actually cross
06:08Now straight over
06:09To Lebanon
06:09And bring in
06:10Our correspondent
06:11In the coastal town
06:12Of Tir
06:13Which is Sur
06:14In Arabic
06:15Ekbel Zayn
06:16Is standing by for us
06:17There this morning
06:17Good morning Ekbel
06:18Thank you so much
06:19For joining us here
06:20Just tell us
06:21How are residents
06:22Doing there
06:23And how exactly
06:23Is the situation
06:28So we're having
06:28Some technical issues
06:30There with the sound
06:31Of Ekbel Zayn
06:32But we'll come back
06:32To her as soon
06:33As we can
06:34But of course
06:34All eyes here
06:36On Hungary
06:36Where parliamentary elections
06:38Will take place
06:38This Sunday
06:39Which will have
06:40Huge implications
06:41Reaching well beyond
06:42The capital of Budapest
06:44After 16 years
06:45In power
06:46The Prime Minister
06:47Viktor Orban
06:47Is facing
06:48A very credible challenge
06:49From Peter
06:50Mayar
06:51Whose TISA party
06:52Is ahead
06:52In independent polling
06:54For more
06:54We can cross now over
06:55Hopefully
06:56To Budapest
06:57And bring in
06:57Your news correspondent
06:59Zoltan Siboshegi
07:00Who's standing by for us
07:01This morning
07:02Thank you so much
07:03Zoltan
07:03For joining us here
07:05Just tell us first
07:05What is the mood there
07:06Ahead of Sunday's
07:08Key elections
07:09Good morning Europe
07:10Thank you for having me
07:12So actually
07:13These weeks
07:14Are the most turbulent times
07:16In the Hungarian politics
07:18In the last 30 years
07:19There are leakings
07:21Every day
07:22Every morning
07:23All the politicians
07:24Accusing each other
07:25That they are spies
07:26They are talking about
07:27Espionage actions
07:28And people fighting
07:30On the street
07:31They are arguing
07:32The main reason is
07:33That actually
07:34For 60 years
07:35There were no politics
07:36In Hungary
07:37The government party
07:38Was so solid
07:39That nobody really
07:40Believed that
07:41They can change it
07:42And two years ago
07:43Peter Magyar
07:44Just appeared from nothing
07:46Actually
07:46From inside the system
07:48And gave back
07:49To this hope
07:50To the people
07:50They loved them
07:52With religious love
07:53And actually
07:54There is a shield
07:55Around him
07:56He had a lot of
07:57Accusations
07:58With sexual abuse
08:00With corruption
08:01Everything
08:02But nothing
08:03Worked out
08:04There are
08:05If you look around
08:06In Budapest
08:07Anywhere
08:07There are huge
08:08Billboards
08:09With the face
08:10Of Volodymyr Zelensky
08:12Because they are telling
08:12That Peter Magyar
08:14Is also
08:15Ukrainian spy
08:16But nobody
08:17Really believes it
08:18According to
08:19The latest polls
08:21What was a huge
08:23Help for the
08:23Hungarian government
08:24That J.D. Wenz
08:27The vice president
08:28Of the United States
08:29Who visited Hungary
08:30For two and a half days
08:31He emphasized
08:32Actually he repeated
08:34The words of Viktor Orban
08:35Telling that
08:36Yeah the biggest threat
08:37For Europe
08:38And for Hungary
08:39Is the
08:40Bristol bureaucrats
08:42I've also been told
08:43That the vice president
08:44Of the United States
08:45Coming and saying
08:46That Viktor Orban
08:47Is doing a good job
08:48And is a helpful
08:49Statesman to the
08:50Cause of peace
08:50That's foreign influence
08:52When the European
08:53Union
08:54Threatens billions
08:55Of dollars
08:56Withheld from Hungary
08:57Because you guys
08:58Protect your borders
08:59That's apparently
09:00Not foreign influence
09:01When the Ukrainians
09:02Shut down pipelines
09:04Causing suffering
09:05Among the Hungarian
09:06People in an effort
09:07To influence an election
09:08That's allegedly
09:10Not foreign influence
09:11It doesn't pass
09:12The smell test
09:13That was J.D. Vance
09:15Speaking there
09:15Yesterday in Hungary
09:16And of course
09:17Before that
09:17Our Hungarian correspondent
09:19And we'll of course
09:19Have live intensive coverage
09:21Over the next couple of days
09:22On yournews.com
09:23So do keep a close eye
09:24On that
09:25But now we can bring you
09:27That interview
09:27That we promised
09:28Where our NATO correspondent
09:30Shona Murray
09:30Had the opportunity
09:31To speak to Ivo Dalder
09:33That's a former
09:34Ambassador for NATO
09:35And she started
09:36By asking him
09:37For his assessment
09:38On the very fragile
09:39Ceasefire
09:39Take a look
09:41Although we've been
09:42Six weeks into a war
09:44An extraordinary
09:45Bombing campaign
09:46By the United States
09:48And Israel
09:49And I think Iran
09:51Has the upper hand
09:52I mean that has been
09:52Clear for quite a while
09:54Remember the Strait of Hormuz
09:56Was open before
09:57The bombing started
09:59Ships were going through
10:00Hundreds of them
10:01A day
10:02Now ships may be
10:03Going through
10:04We don't know
10:04We don't know how many
10:05We don't know when
10:06We don't know where
10:07And in any case
10:08The Iranians are claiming
10:10They will maintain control
10:11The armed forces of Iran
10:13Will maintain control
10:14Over shipments
10:15Through the Straits
10:16That is a massive change
10:18In Iran's benefit
10:19And to the detriment
10:21Not only of the United States
10:23And Israel
10:23But frankly
10:24To all the Gulf states
10:26Who need the access
10:27To the straits
10:27And so many others
10:29Who depend on it
10:30Well I suppose also
10:31Your heart would go out
10:32To the Iranian people
10:33Who were protesting
10:34Back in January
10:35Who were encouraged
10:36To continue their protests
10:37Who were promised
10:39That the Americans
10:39And the Israelis
10:40Would assist them
10:41In regime change
10:43And it actually looks like
10:44The Iranian regime
10:45Has an even
10:46More ironclad control
10:49Yeah I think
10:50You know
10:52If this war ends
10:53Like it does now
10:54Not just a two week ceasefire
10:56By longer
10:56We can say that
10:58None of the objectives
10:59With perhaps the exception
11:01Of the degree
11:02To which Iran
11:04Still has a missile capability
11:06That none of the objectives
11:07That were set out
11:08At the beginning
11:09Of this campaign
11:10Have been met
11:10So when you look
11:12At it all
11:12You say
11:13Why did we go to war
11:14And if this is the result
11:16You can't but conclude
11:18That this was
11:19A strategic blunder
11:20Of historic proportion
11:22The other question
11:23Is the damage
11:24That has been done
11:24To NATO
11:25I mean you mentioned
11:25Earlier there
11:26That allies
11:27Have said
11:29This is not our war
11:30NATO is a defensive
11:30Organization
11:31You know
11:32They were pretty
11:32Clear cut about that
11:33Donald Trump
11:34Is threatening
11:35To leave NATO
11:36Is humiliating NATO
11:37It's a paper tiger
11:38What is the impact
11:40Of this?
11:40Well I mean clearly
11:42What's happened
11:43Over the last six weeks
11:44Has been extraordinarily
11:45Damaging to NATO
11:47Coming on top
11:49Of the extraordinarily
11:50Damaging episode
11:52Of agreements
11:52And I think
11:53The three months
11:54That have just passed
11:56We will look back
11:58At it
11:58As the worst crisis
12:00That NATO has had
12:01In 77 years
12:03It will end up
12:04With all European countries
12:06Doubting
12:07That the United States
12:08Or at least
12:09A United States
12:10Led by Donald Trump
12:11Can still be counted upon
12:12As a reliable ally
12:14When it comes to
12:14Article 5
12:15Or to collect
12:16Defence of their territory
12:17I know that
12:18Vladimir Putin
12:19Is really
12:19You know
12:20Can't believe his luck
12:21With this war
12:22In Iran
12:22I mean
12:23Donald Trump
12:24Removed some of the
12:25Sanctions on
12:25Oil and so on
12:27But if let's say
12:28He were to maybe
12:30Test Article 5
12:31Maybe going into
12:32Estonia
12:33Or one of those places
12:33I mean do you think
12:34That he might be
12:35A little bit more
12:35Inclined to do that now
12:36Seeing the disarray
12:38Within the alliance
12:39Oh absolutely
12:40I think we are
12:41Living in an
12:42Extraordinarily dangerous
12:43Period of time
12:45We see a divided NATO
12:46Which has been the goal
12:47Of first the Soviet Union
12:48And then Russia
12:49For the better part
12:51Of 80 years
12:51A NATO that is
12:53Truly at loggerheads
12:54A NATO in which
12:56The President of the United States
12:57Says I'm not going to
12:57Defend you
12:58Don't count on me
12:59As he put it
13:01Or bye bye
13:01As he said
13:02On his press conference
13:04On Monday
13:05It is a
13:06It's a good time
13:07To test NATO
13:08If you are
13:09Sitting in Moscow
13:10By the way
13:11It's a good time
13:11To test what you
13:13Could get away with
13:13In Taiwan
13:14If you're sitting
13:14In Beijing
13:15Because much of
13:16The U.S.
13:17Military capability
13:18Has been moved
13:18To the Gulf
13:21And indeed
13:22Much of the U.S.
13:22Military capability
13:23Has been expanded
13:25On this war
13:26Which turned out
13:27To be a strategic
13:28Blunder
13:29Of historic proportion
13:30So we're living
13:31In a world
13:32Where the possibility
13:34Of major adversaries
13:36Taking advantage
13:36Of European
13:39Weakness
13:39And American
13:40Self-inflicted wounds
13:42Is larger now
13:44Than any time
13:44In my lifetime
13:45And frankly
13:45Probably any time
13:46In anybody's lifetime
13:47Final question Ivo
13:48Because you're
13:49A dual national
13:49You're born in
13:51The Hague
13:51But I want to ask you
13:52A little bit about
13:53Mark Rutte's
13:54Modus operandi
13:56When it comes to
13:56Donald Trump
13:57Because some people
13:58Have found that
13:59A bit greater
13:59In the last few
14:00Months
14:00That he hasn't
14:01Been firm enough
14:02With Donald Trump
14:03We saw in The Hague
14:04Him referring to
14:05Trump as daddy
14:05And so on
14:06Sometimes that's
14:07A bit of a joke
14:07But there's a feeling
14:08That maybe he
14:09He just plays it up
14:11To Trump a little bit
14:12More to the detriment
14:14To the European allies
14:15What's your own
14:16Interpretation?
14:17I think the big
14:18Problem that Rutte faced
14:19Is on the issue
14:20Of Iran
14:21He probably went
14:23Too far
14:23He probably went
14:24Too much in the
14:25Direction of supporting
14:26The president
14:28Particularly since
14:2831 of his
14:2932 constituents
14:31Believed that the
14:32War that the
14:32President of the
14:33United States
14:33Had started
14:34Was both
14:35Unnecessary
14:36And most
14:37Importantly
14:38Illegal
14:38And as a result
14:40Supporting the
14:41President
14:41Sort of alienated
14:43Him with many
14:44Other countries
14:48Shona Murray
14:48They're speaking
14:49To Ivo
14:50Dalder
14:50And now for
14:51The view from
14:51Lebanon
14:51We can cross
14:52Over once more
14:53To southern
14:53Lebanon
14:53To the coastal
14:54Town of
14:55Tir
14:55Which is
14:56Sur in Arabic
14:57And bring in
14:57Our reporter
14:58Echbel
14:58Zane
14:59Good morning
14:59Echbel
15:00Just tell us
15:01How are residents
15:02Doing there
15:02And describe the
15:03Situation on the
15:04Ground
15:06Good morning
15:07Maeve
15:08Well as I said
15:09Today is a
15:10National
15:10Warning day
15:11In Lebanon
15:12Hundreds of
15:13Civilians
15:14Who were killed
15:14And wounded
15:15Yesterday
15:15By Israeli
15:17Airstrikes
15:18That targeted
15:19Multiple areas
15:20In the country
15:21That airstrikes
15:22Came without
15:23Warnings
15:24And the
15:24Bombardment
15:25Continued
15:25Overnight
15:26Ambulances
15:27Were racing
15:27Hospitals
15:28Asking
15:29Urgency
15:29For blood
15:30Of all types
15:31And also
15:32Rescue missions
15:33Were becoming
15:34More and more
15:35Difficult
15:35As tens of
15:36People were
15:36Stuck under
15:37The rubble
15:38And that
15:39Sustained wave
15:40Of bombardment
15:41Was sending
15:41A clear Israeli
15:43Message that
15:43Israel at any
15:45Coast refuses
15:46To include
15:47Lebanon
15:47And any
15:48Potential
15:48Ceasefire
15:49Between Iran
15:50And the
15:50United States
15:51And how does
15:52That make
15:52People feel
15:53There are
15:53People now
15:54Fleeing
15:54For fear
15:55Of their
15:55Lives
15:57Well
15:58When the
15:59Ceasefire
16:00Was announced
16:00And following
16:01Pakistan's
16:02Statements
16:03Hopes were
16:03Really high
16:04In the
16:04Country
16:04That we
16:05Might be
16:06Included
16:06In that
16:07Ceasefire
16:08So yes
16:08Most people
16:10First tried
16:11To rush
16:11And come
16:12Back to
16:12The south
16:13Yet the
16:14Lebanese
16:14Army
16:14Prevented
16:15Some of
16:16Them
16:16Because it's
16:16Not safe
16:17Yet
16:17And yesterday
16:19The Israeli
16:20Army
16:20Targeted
16:21The last
16:21Bridge
16:22Linking
16:23South
16:23Areas
16:23To north
16:24Areas
16:24Of
16:24Latani
16:25River
16:25To prevent
16:26People
16:26From
16:27Returning
16:28To the south
16:28And also
16:29To assure
16:30That the
16:30War
16:30Has not
16:31Ended
16:31Yet
16:32Last
16:33Day
16:33Was one
16:34Of the
16:34Hardest
16:35Day
16:35From the
16:36Beginning
16:36Of the
16:37War
16:37And people
16:38Feel
16:38Terrified
16:39And traumatized
16:40So many
16:42Of them
16:42Say that
16:43What's
16:43Happening
16:44Right now
16:44In the
16:45Country
16:45Goes
16:46Beyond
16:46Lebanon
16:46And the
16:48Country
16:48Is somehow
16:49In the
16:49Middle
16:49Of a
16:50Regional
16:50Equation
16:51Between
16:51Iran
16:52Trying
16:52To
16:53Reunite
16:54And the
16:55Israeli
16:55Prime
16:56Minister
16:56Benjamin
16:56Netanyahu
16:57Trying to
16:58Separate
16:59Them
16:59So for
17:01Now all
17:01Eyes are
17:02On the
17:02Coming
17:02Hours
17:03To see
17:03How things
17:04Will evolve
17:05And unfold
17:06Eventually
17:06Indeed
17:07On a
17:07Very
17:08Fragile
17:09Situ
17:09Stay
