The GLC features a new one-box braking system. This ensures a consistently smooth, confident, and transparent brake pedal feel – regardless of whether deceleration is achieved through recuperation or friction braking. The braking system combines the previously separate components of the brake booster, master cylinder, and ESP® control unit into a single compact module.
For efficiency reasons, virtually all braking operations are performed via recuperation. The recuperation power reaches up to approximately 300 kW. This allows the GLC to brake electrically even to a standstill, thus recovering kinetic energy. The driver has four recuperation levels to choose from: D- (highest recuperation level), D (normal recuperation), D+ (no recuperation), and D Auto (intelligent recuperation). Recuperation via the brake pedal is always active.
In D mode, drivers can enjoy the so-called "one-pedal feeling": When the foot is taken off the accelerator pedal, the vehicle decelerates purely electrically and with sufficient force, up to 3 m/s², so that the hydraulic braking system is not needed in over 99 percent of cases. This strong deceleration means more energy is recovered and therefore, ultimately, a longer range. Recuperation is even possible in winter road conditions.
