The electric drive unit features a permanent magnet synchronous motor (PSM) on the front axle. It achieves an efficiency of 93 percent from the battery to the wheels on long journeys. The all-wheel-drive models also have a powerful electric motor on the rear axle. Depending on the driving situation and driving program, this motor is only engaged when power is required or traction is needed. This task is handled by the Disconnect Unit (DCU), which Mercedes-Benz is using for the first time in this segment. For particularly efficient energy use, both drive units are equipped with high-performance power electronics with silicon carbide inverters.
