00:02when it comes to house hunting there are many different ways to measure success from the
00:07physical yeah yeah to the emotional bit lost for words actually but however a property makes you
00:21feel beautiful do we like we love it we love the price has got to be on the money goosebumps
00:29yet
01:00cornwall a living landscape with its own culture miles of coastline and its very own legendary
01:10culinary delight now according to the old fairy tale Hansel and Gretel left a trail of breadcrumbs
01:19behind them as they made their way through the forest so they could get home again but say the
01:24story goes the birds ate the breadcrumbs and the kids got lost well to help lead me to some fantastic
01:30properties this week I've got a Cornish pasty and also the opportunity to rediscover the sights sounds
01:37and smells of this gorgeous County let's just hope we don't want out of these sitting at the
01:46southwestern tip of England Cornwall's top of the picks when it comes to country escapes
01:52Cornwall's a great place to live not only because it's got fantastic landscape it's got incredible
01:57wildlife it's got a big cultural history and we're a really lovely supportive community throughout the
02:03county the pretty fishing village of Mousel with its narrow streets and granite cottages was once
02:10famous for pilchard catches with over 17 million caught in one week in 1866 now visitors could enjoy
02:18the catch of the day in one of the many seafood restaurants on offer what I love about Cornwall
02:24is its creativity its beauty and its inspiration for a lot of people that come here including artists
02:30authors it is a wonderful place to live it's a lovely county also making waves is the seaside town of
02:39St Ives loved as much for its eclectic art scene as its sandy coves and epic surf the beachfront tape
02:47gallery celebrates homegrown artists like Barbara Hepworth she was part of a movement of artists who flocked to
02:54the town in the 1930s and 40s but whatever the reason for a visit to Cornwall it's vibrant palette never
03:02disappoints
03:07well having spent more than 20 years living in Australia today's buyers are returning to the UK to
03:14Cornwall and in terms of distance it must surely be one of the furthest escapes it is possible to make
03:21on
03:21the planet hi I'm Sal and I'm Phil we're both from the UK originally I've been in Australia for about
03:2930
03:29years and I've been here for about 20 it's been a really good place to raise a family but our
03:35daughter
03:35Kimberly has flown the nest you'll have room for me won't you yes super excitingly we have just sold
03:44our house so we are all set to realize our long-held dream of escaping to the Cornish countryside they're
03:51making the 11,000 mile trip to Cornwall where retired management consultant Phil is thinking
03:57about starting a holiday let business while wife Sal has just retrained as a jewellery designer this is
04:04her workshop stroke garden shed so let's see what she's up to hello love how are you going what you
04:13do just finishing some designs off that I started working on this week Sal's jewellery is inspired
04:19by nature this is Lake Burley Griffin behind us in Canberra I come down here most mornings to walk
04:25and Phil comes with me at the weekends it's about a 20 minute drive from home and it's one of
04:30the
04:30things I'm really looking forward to in moving to Cornwall and that's swapping the lake for the ocean
04:35as well as being closer to family all my family now are living in Cornwall but also as well it
04:40gives us
04:40the opportunity as a gateway to Europe to travel more frequently which is something we've not done
04:46done together that'd be great that's lock it up for the last time 15 years 15 years yeah
04:57done chapter see you in Cornwall heading off on the first leg out of Canberra to Sydney
05:10to help them settle back on home turf they're looking for a detached character property a spacious
05:17kitchen three bedrooms an outbuilding suitable as a studio and Phil's happy to take on a project
05:24they'd like to be within reach of amenities and a sea view would be the icing on the cake their
05:29top
05:30budget is 700,000 pounds now Brits moving to Australia is of course a well-worn path but for
05:45Brits coming back the other way that may be a rarer thing but Phil and Sal are determined to do
05:52just
05:52that the same goodbye to what many of us would perceive as a sunny easier life down under but and
05:59it gives them access to the wider world to Europe their wish list is extensive however their open
06:07minds may give us the flexibility we need in matching their budget to the property market fingers crossed
06:20our house hunt is kicking off in poor fallow on the east coast of the lizard peninsula but before we
06:27get
06:27stuck in we're catching up to say good day on the village's beautiful quiet and enticing gray sand and pebbled
06:34beach
06:37well Sal Phil how does it feel to be back in blighty a bit strange but still like coming home
06:43yeah
06:43how's the jet lag yeah what day is it again it's the first day of the rest of your lives
06:49there we go that's that's what we're
06:51about isn't it now are there any aspects of British life that you're really looking forward to re-engaging
06:58with I used to be a very keen sailor when I was last in the UK so okay living somewhere
07:03like Cornwall
07:03would be absolutely fantastic because I'd hopefully get back into sailing now the range of property here in
07:07the UK is very different to what you get in Australia but is that an exciting prospect to make that
07:12sort of
07:12check yeah it is get some of the character back into the buildings and less in the suburbs looking out
07:19of the
07:19window into your next-door neighbours back garden and into their windows so obviously this is the first time that
07:24you've sought a home in the UK together yeah has it been an easy process in the past to agree
07:29on things when we bought
07:30our place in Australia took us 200 viewings I think 200 viewings we've only got a few days at this
07:43so how
07:43will I know if we found the right property I think for me it will be an emotional response it's
07:49a feeling
07:49it definitely is a feeling I think we've got our wish list but we know there's going to be compromises
07:55there moving the budget so we have three properties to show you I hope one of which will work and
08:02if
08:02you love all this hopefully you'll appreciate our first one because it's a walk from the beach
08:08shall we yeah definitely let's have a look
08:13while poor fellow lays claim to this pretty beach and a pub a wider choice of facilities can be found
08:20less than two miles away in the village of St Cavern here around the village square amongst pastel
08:26cottages are two pubs a village shop a butcher's and a bistro voted one of the best local restaurants
08:34in Britain I'm told that in the summer months the sound of music fills the air from the local choir
08:40and
08:40band and if the winds blowing in the right direction it might just reach porthano and this detached
08:47double-fronted period property well as you can see it really is just a short walk from the beach
08:55and this is what I want to start with what do you make of this it's very pretty yeah it's
09:02very nice
09:03and quite imposing now since 2018 the whole thing has had a complete makeover but it also comes with
09:09this which to my eyes is one of the most enchanted gardens I've seen of late at the bottom of
09:17which
09:17is something which I think will also be of interest to basically first impressions very
09:24isn't it yeah it is yeah and very different to what you've got now right yeah completely different
09:28to that so we do have a palm tree which is nice yeah built in 1908 the elegant edwardian properties
09:40period proportions greet you as soon as you cross the threshold here we are we've got it all ready
09:45and open for you wow yeah come and have a look in here there we go wow it's beautiful beautifully
09:56presented isn't it yeah I really like it we were expecting smaller rooms so this is a real treat
10:03to have a room of this size for the main sort of living area yeah come and have a look
10:07through at the
10:08kitchen uh where they've really um gone to town on it dining here and then this rather slick I think
10:15beautiful contemporary kitchen really lovely that is lovely I must admit this is what we would aspire to
10:24definitely definitely it's lovely yeah you look a bit lost for words I am it is it is sort of
10:31in
10:31mind's eye our finished aspect because I do know that you are up for a project yeah this is not
10:38that
10:39obviously yeah not to sort of discounted well I think at this moment in time but this this is what
10:45I've got in my mind's eye as the finished article in our next place you're right but we've we've been
10:51part of that journey yeah sort of thing to to get there but so you want the hard work I
10:55do yes maybe
10:58not you're not so enthusiastic but um I enjoy the the the decorating and that side of things not
11:05living in a building site let's have a look upstairs and see what you think of that
11:10the home's glow up included a two-story side extension adding a shower room and breakfast room to
11:16the ground floor where there's also a utility and an office so up here of this lovely bright landing got
11:24three bedrooms uh family bathroom in there with a lovely roll top bath and then this I think would
11:31be yours it's lovely it's probably well done bright and airy yeah and in here shower room ensuite that's
11:41very cleverly done isn't it it is yeah it's very nice I think you'll like what's in here a nice
11:47little
11:47dressing area in here loads of stories there a juliet balcony one side a real balcony wow that's a real
11:55surprise lovely beautiful do we like we love it is we love yeah I think the elegance of it all
12:02is
12:02yeah absolutely yeah absolutely completing the sleeping accommodation are two guest rooms both doubles
12:11yeah dual aspect as well look at that beautiful and the proportions are lovely they are oh another
12:19beautiful bright airy room with a fireplace as well yeah I think even kimberly would be spoiled for
12:24choice on a on a spare room for her visits yeah definitely inside has delivered in spades and outside
12:33well it's cleverly designed to provide both relaxation and inspiration let's explore
12:42the garden at the front of the house is a labyrinth of paths and hidden nooks and crannies
12:47with an exotic display of plants and blooms a wildlife pond lawn zones and a well-stocked kitchen garden
12:56housed in a polytunnel wow it's a little bit Aussie this isn't it it is actually a bit lost for
13:04words
13:04actually there's even a choice of spots where they could throw a sausage or two on the barbie
13:12down here we've got this series of little outbuildings and i'm wondering whether these could be
13:18improved with a bit of imagination and hard work into your studio yeah definitely it's it's already
13:25an improvement on my my tin shed in australia it is lovely there's no two ways about it let's think
13:32about how much this is on the market for then um granted you may be a bit rusty on uh
13:36British property
13:37prices who's going to go first i'll go for six seven five six hundred and seventy five thousand pounds
13:44indeed i think maybe it's a little bit over our budget maybe with a little bit of room for negotiation
13:50so i'm gonna go seven hundred and ten seven hundred and ten thousand pounds you are bang on
13:56sir six hundred and seventy five thousand pounds is the asking price for this our first property
14:01i've got goosebumps so it's doable it is are they good goosebumps yeah yeah yeah
14:09under budget at six hundred and seventy five thousand pounds this remodelled edwardian home has a
14:15spacious kitchen diner and an open plan reception room along with three double bedrooms there's an
14:21incredible garden outbuildings offering both studio and holiday let potential and it's all just minutes
14:28from the beach have a look in this one nice space it is plenty you could do in here yeah
14:36exactly either of us
14:40really yeah it's much nicer than we should yeah this house is definitely giving me the emotional
14:47response in terms of the feels it's beautifully finished it's it's got that character and it's
14:55still giving me goosebumps now to think that this is something that that we could have all right it's a
15:00fantastic house it is a finished article part of it for me is to be part of that uh finishing
15:06that
15:06property and turn it into our forever home but i think sal will see us living here quite happily
15:23after living 100 miles inland down under sal and phil are itching to be part of a creative community
15:30close to the water so we're pressing pause on our house hunt just long enough for them to explore
15:36penryn an ancient market town in west cornwall sitting on the penryn river what i like about penryn
15:43in many ways it encapsulates all of the different aspects of cornwall the the small town friendliness
15:50the history this is one of the oldest settlements in cornwall can trace itself back to before medieval
15:56times and and i do feel very welcomed into this community a designated conservation area the town has
16:03over 100 listed buildings no it's pretty it is very pleasing and what we love most about penryn is
16:12the fact it's walking distance like literally everything you've got um an amazing cafe next
16:17door got some lovely parks and you've got the water literally right on the doorstep it just looks
16:21beautiful you can jump on a paddleboard and just take yourself down to falmouth
16:25and if you fancy a more traditional mode of transport there's a good bus and train service to
16:31falmouth penryn's arty neighbor and truro the uk's southernmost city penryn as a town is a quirky
16:39it's got a lot going for it it's it's great for the arts loads of musicians great workshops loads of
16:46different things going on here for a deep dive into penryn's creative scene sal and phil have come to
16:53visit local artisan sadie hodgson in her waterside studio hello this is so lovely oh thank you so
17:00much lovely to meet you i make jewelry out of sea glass that i found on local cornish beaches and
17:08i
17:08also teach workshops oh wow would you like to come and have a go i would love to let's do
17:13it lovely
17:15it takes years for these sea jewels to form under water weathered tumbled and polished smooth by the
17:22salt waves rocks and sand you are going to create a nice curve just so that you can hook it
17:29onto your
17:30sea glass silver wire is bent around the glass to create a pendant great really good what can we look
17:39forward to if we make the big move to penryn we have gorgeous scenes the water especially there's so
17:46much wildlife that you can see and take inspiration from there's lots of creatives you name it we've
17:52got it here you can definitely set up a business here it's great i love it here and i could
17:57not live
17:58anywhere else okay how is that looking cool oh that's beautiful thank you that is absolutely stunning
18:07i'm just going to pop them on a chain for you so everything that you have used today has been
18:13100 recycled sterling and fine silver too here we go thank you so much for coming along today and if
18:21you do come down and move to cornwall you are welcome back any time lovely thank you it's been really
18:27lovely time now then to take our finger off pause and get back on the road to continue our search
18:34for
18:34a jewel of a cornish home our next property takes us to the riverside village of gweek its name derives
18:49from the cornish word gweeg meaning forest village there's a creative buzz in the air with a community
18:55which celebrates the arts the helford rivers are popular spot for sailing and on dry land there are
19:02excellent transport links to the larger hubs of helston falmouth and truro
19:09but staying local in a quiet spot away from the action is the house we're here to see
19:17oh wow gosh that's impressive actually yeah yeah right not insubstantial no exactly yes that's
19:28the way to put it but it also comes with that yeah this is by no means a project it's
19:35it's ready to
19:35go yeah however i think you could take this up a notch or two to give you that feel of
19:42property one
19:43okay looks interesting when i go inside and have a look yeah nice come on
19:48nice this detached property is a gentle giant offering both generously proportioned rooms and cozy charm
19:58right we're heading straight to the kitchen triple aspect with exposed beams
20:05surprising isn't it surprising it's very nice it's got all the function you would want
20:11yeah but still you could uplift it and i mean i think the nice thing is you don't need to
20:16necessarily adjust the floor plan no no so nothing structural but it is that potential kind of
20:22cosmetic yeah lift yeah very much so yeah well go next door and have a look at the uh the
20:29living space
20:31the sitting room is flooded with light with three of its windows in an extension to the original house
20:37oh wow surprisingly big but it's a huge ship's beam overhead that takes center stage goodness knows
20:45whoever lifted that beam up and put it here i'm glad it wasn't me they're lovely really nice you can
20:52absolutely see what you could do with it and yeah how good it could be there are options here for
20:58sure
20:59a ground floor guest room could twin as a home office and there's also a neighboring bathroom
21:05it's useful to have this on the ground floor if your mom comes to visit yeah true too actually
21:12as well as a sizable utility keeping white goods out of the kitchen three further bedrooms
21:18are upstairs two guest rooms so this is that smaller space yeah and a double with its own shower room
21:29so this i think is obviously the one you would choose oh wow it is ensuite bigger than than i
21:36was
21:36expecting i must submit i'm guessing you have an enormous bedroom in australia or had one it is fairly
21:42large and it is on so yeah and it's got a walking right i think that's all sorts of things
21:46isn't it a
21:48walk-in robe yeah is that exactly the aussie term yeah right well you've got some robes uh built in
21:56here obviously and a balcony too what is there a special term for that in os or is just a
22:01veranda there we
22:06are oh wow oh this is nice not quite a sea view but yeah nice nice place perhaps to wake
22:12up and enjoy
22:13your coffee and yeah framed by the greenery is absolutely fantastic certainly not next door's
22:19washing no that's true no there is that there are views from every angle from the house and the gardens
22:27both front and rear so that's all the bricks and mortar pretty much except for that the workshop yeah
22:39so now you've had a chance to really get a sense of what the property offers you let's think about
22:43how much this is going to be on the market for i think i'm going to go maybe six hundred
22:49and thirty
22:49five thousand six hundred and thirty five thousand pounds okay phil i'm going to go for 680 wow 680 000
22:57pounds plays 635 000 pounds this is on the market for six hundred and thirty thousand pounds there you see
23:07so maybe that optimism was well placed priced 70 000 pounds under budget at 630 000 this detached house has
23:17a spacious reception room and four bedrooms one with a glazed balcony the outbuilding is ready to be
23:23transformed into a studio and amenities are within arm's reach okay blank canvas you have a beautiful
23:35studio space in here oh yeah i think that the size of it is good the layout is good and
23:43the location
23:44then its proximity to local villages is excellent it's much more practical um which in some respects
23:52is great particularly from the business side of things but the fields would have to be added which
23:57is not impossible so have we seen enough property for one day do you think i think so yes yeah
24:03it's been
24:04good and uh certainly learning a lot definitely that's the main thing yeah and i'm learning a lot too
24:10and a few interesting aussie phrases along the way come on after you
24:27but before the jet lag really kicks in for sal and phil we're stopping for a cuppa by the water
24:33to reflect
24:34on our day so now we're here and it's happening does it feel a bit more real oh absolutely absolutely
24:43real exciting yeah it's actually finally happening and have you been surprised thus far at what the
24:51market's thrown up yeah definitely i mean i think um the first property we saw this morning and its
24:57proximity to the sea and for the budget there i didn't think that was quite as feasible so that's
25:03been i think the big big revelation for me interesting which brings us on to the jewelry
25:08i've noticed on your wrist i love the design i like a lot of my work now um inspired by
25:13nature so
25:14the new zealand kuru shell which is white with a gray spiral in it is what inspired um the particular
25:20designs for these pieces so maybe in the future there'll be some celtic cornish designs creeping into
25:25your work definitely there will be the idea of being able to chuck in office life and actually
25:29do your own thing and be creative and and be an artisan you know it's it's it's it's a huge
25:35aspiration
25:35for so many people and and here you are i know you're doing it i know right here's to here's
25:41to gormul
25:55half of all recent moves within cornwall have been relocations and it's good news for buyers at 426
26:03000 pounds the average price of a detached house here is somewhat lower than the uk figure of 441
26:10000 and with a good range of properties on the market there are homes in the mix to suit most
26:16budgets
26:18this end of terrace granite cottage in a village setting has an open plan living room and kitchen
26:24featuring exposed stone and original timbers it has two bedrooms and is on the market for just shy of
26:31250 000 pounds double your money and this semi-detached period home could be yours
26:39again with exposed stone outside and in a stylish kitchen three double bedrooms and a home office
26:46at the end of the pretty cottage garden it's priced a little below 500 000 pounds
26:55and on the holiday let market this dog-friendly cottage formerly the scullery of a manor
27:01sleeps too has a cozy interior well stocked kitchen and a patio garden prices start at 110 pounds per night
27:09in low season well we have one more day of house hunting ahead of us here in cornwall with phil
27:18and with sal which means of course it's time to reveal our mystery house to them a property whose
27:23former purpose and location has in every respect defined what it is fingers crossed my hunch is right
27:30that it could be just what they're looking for but before that look at the weather and the time and
27:35tide are perfect to allow us all what i hope will be some creative beachcombing
27:44we're heading towards our mystery house which is situated in the hamlet of tahiti
27:49a couple of miles inland from the north cornish coast and the award-winning potreth beach
27:56here the gentle tidal pool attracts swimmers and the mighty reef break draws in the surface
28:03but today it's nature's harvest that's brought us here it just seemed like a nice opportunity
28:09in having a bit of a beach coat to see what kind of things we might find that could complement
28:14your
28:14designs and your future business absolutely it's all treasure it's all treasure come on there let's
28:20have a beach i mean the trouble is i just want to pick it all up i love the shape
28:26of that i mean
28:27you've already got a few little bits there look at those oh so would you think to encase that in
28:34silver yeah yeah so all of these shapes will lend themselves to some sort of silver setting but you
28:40what always strikes me about you know picking up stains like these and pebbles they are millions
28:46and millions of years old yeah yeah absolutely it's kind of humbling isn't it it is well the joy of
28:51this exercise isn't just for me to get into your creative mindset part of the point of coming here
28:55is to reveal the fact that our mystery house is 10 minutes from this beach that's interesting yeah so
29:02i'm going to go ahead to our mystery house okay and get it all ready for you and you can
29:08keep
29:08exploring and see what else you can find sounds great the sun's about to probably come out even
29:12better right good luck good hunting our mystery house sits in a rural spot but less than two miles
29:24away is the village of illuggan once prolific in tin and copper mining residents can pick up everyday
29:30essentials grab a pint and a bite and get stuck into local arts and crafts events there's also a direct
29:37bus to the larger town of red roof but leaving the noise behind i've arrived at this little treasure
29:46i absolutely love this not just because of where it is but because of what it is
29:54thought to date to around 1780 this detached whitewash property has been awarded a grade two
30:01listing a nod to its architectural importance well when you come through our mystery house and you
30:08step into the garden it really does begin to reveal itself it sits in the corner of a classic historic
30:15walled kitchen garden it is the former head gardener's house and if they are thinking about finding a new
30:21substantial home with glorious gardens and bags of peace and quiet maybe maybe this could be the one
30:31this really is a mystery house and a half not only does it have its own exquisite gardens it also
30:38has
30:39access to a whopping 42 acres of private estate parkland within the tahiti country park home to the
30:46largest area of woodland in cornwall well here it is then our final offering our mystery property what
30:53do you think it's very pretty isn't it very pretty yes very nice it is the former head gardener's house
31:00of the estate here oh wow very rare to find the wall gardener's house a wall gardener's house frankly
31:07still available and on the open market they don't come up very often it's looking very promising jules right
31:12let's have a look and having had a sneak peek myself already i'm hoping that sense of promise
31:20will continue so here we are then the kitchen i think is a sort of game of two halves more
31:25of a
31:25sort of utility area here and then the main event uh is in here it's lovely yeah a step back
31:33in time
31:34yeah it's lovely no i like it definitely all right come and have a look to here
31:42the kitchen leads to a hallway which divides the house and beyond it side by side are two reception
31:48rooms there is the dining end with access to a nice little courtyard uh of its own and then you

32:08i'm getting a feel yeah i'm getting a feel goosebumps yet well depends how much it is
32:16phil what do you think i i like it and i love the character and it's a lovely lovely property
32:22not much to do can i think there is scope here still for you to make it your own i
32:27would enjoy
32:28you know working with this as a canvas i'm certainly keen to see more particularly out in the garden
32:32ah well before we get to that go and have a look upstairs you don't need me it's pretty self
32:38-explanatory
32:38and i'll meet you out there fabulous good upstairs the footprint mirrors the ground floor
32:48off the hallway is the main bathroom with a walk-in shower and three bedrooms
32:53there's a double with garden views from two windows
32:58nice proportions yeah it is nice fire and nice pictures the principal bedroom has its own ensuite
33:07that's a good idea with the glass doors isn't it yeah it's nicely done it is and you've got the
33:12dual aspect in here as well so it's beautifully light really lovely yeah and next door is the third
33:18bedroom i can see more potential to do things with this space other than just cosmetic be interested
33:25to see what the outdoor space yeah absolutely not surprisingly the property's shining star is the
33:32garden which covers a third of an acre laid out within its double height 18th century brick walls
33:40oh wow i hear voices
33:46wow what do you reckon yeah pretty impressive isn't it yeah it certainly is you came on escape to the
33:52country wanting house and we're trying to turn you into a garden it works nice problem to have yeah
33:58we come and look at the rest of it a little bit of a babbling water feature in the corner
34:04there
34:04nice and then as you would hope in a wall garden a vegetable wow orchard as well yes yeah i'm
34:14thinking
34:14nice little studio down here at the end of the garden yep oh very much so you could definitely
34:22well you know it's all too playful yeah plus also you get the double garage yeah well let's get down
34:30to
34:30the price thing because obviously that is going to have a bearing on uh proceedings um it's got to
34:34be at the top end of the budget so i would say 700 000. okay 700 000 pounds yeah so
34:40i'd be slightly
34:41more optimistic than that and go maybe 690 695. you sir are spot on at 700 000 pounds yeah certainly
34:49a lot
34:49to think about yes
34:54this grade 2 listed 18th century rare gem of a mystery house is priced on budget at 700 000 pounds
35:03it has a country style kitchen two reception rooms three bedrooms and a truly inspiring walled garden
35:09along with access to a further 42 acres of parkland it's also close to both local services and the coast
35:18completely unique and it's quite humbling to think that this could be a new home for us it's definitely
35:26got a wow factor so yeah it's definitely um got us thinking hasn't it it certainly has
35:43hidden away here on the north coast of cornwall is a getaway like no other it is in part i
35:50suppose
35:50wild retreat and design project but it is the vision of one woman who has sought to marry the merits
35:57of
35:57what is effectively a post-industrial landscape with a rich array of architectural elements
36:02that she's now placed upon it
36:06nine years ago louise middleton bought this 45 and a half acre abandoned slate quarry
36:13near the village of tintagel she had grand designs to transform it into an off-grid retreat where
36:19visitors could for the duration of their stay live at one with nature well louise realized her dream
36:26and welcomes upwards of 2 000 guests each year
36:32louise it's been fascinating walking through the site here that looks amazing what do you call that
36:38i call it a wilderness cabin you know but it's a tree house really but this is a kudvar so
36:44kudvar means
36:45hideout in cornish okay what a vision to take an old quarry site and then think about putting these
36:52elements on it to which people can now come and enjoy this part of the coast we made sure that
36:57we
36:57did all the landscape and visual impact assessment because you've got this old commercial cornish
37:05vernacular you know these old buildings so everything needs to sit correctly within
37:10those landscapes so when you came here before this was built it was clear that whatever structure
37:16occupied this particular part of the site would reflect its very immediate surroundings yeah it's
37:23called a mosaic habitat here it's got five different habitats that were all stitched together like a
37:29mosaic it's very very rare site so you share this very much with the natural environment it's in charge
37:34yeah well totally in charge because per kudvar you've got four and a half acres like when do you get
37:40that in your life you're perched like carefully in the trees and you're watching nature unfold
37:49the exterior of this modular cabin is clad in larch which grays in time emulating the slate once mined
37:56here it's got a personality already yeah so this is aluminium opens down on heavy duty lorry hinges wow
38:09this is really clever i love the window double glazed fully insulated but so simple yeah strip back
38:17simplicity great engineering and up here's the bed that's it i have a go for it have a peek
38:26i love it and more triangular windows
38:30the sustainable accommodation on the site includes three unique kudvars
38:35a log cabin and a collection of teepees which have uninterrupted views to the atlantic ocean
38:44and the centerpiece it's the quarry's original 19th century engine house
38:50well this is a real reminder of the life of the former quarry it can be seen from everywhere here
38:57as well
39:01mementos of the past are obvious with great slabs of slate scattered along the paths
39:10i mean the view just gets better the further through the quarry you get towards the case doesn't
39:14it yeah absolutely amazing and i see here you've got another design obviously inspired by the original
39:22that you can clearly move around far more portable yeah you can extend the leg so it's self-level so
39:28yeah um which is what we're all about camping the encampable you know architectural hideouts in
39:34unexpected places nice architectural hideouts in unexpected places well you've definitely done that
39:39people want to be digitally detoxed they just do it's gonna be a thing of the future but you know
39:46with
39:46nature like it it rests our system really really well and that's what people need is deep rest it's
39:53amazing and it's lovely to see what would have been a forlorn and forgotten post-industrial landscape
39:59you know lived in again and enjoyed and appreciated amazing yeah very inspiring
40:12well it's been a busy old week we've certainly developed a thirst and indeed a hunger so
40:18where better and how better to finish off our house searched in here with a lovely cornish view of the
40:25sea
40:29what a way to finish our week now then how are they excellent excellent so have we managed to find
40:36you a home to come to you is there a favorite oh for me it's a bit of a split
40:42decision mystery house
40:43fantastic awesome but i think uh house number one shades it just for me yeah i think that's fair
40:53the house was a surprise the location was a surprise the garden just ever-ending surprise
40:59just fantastic the thing that we need to check out before we can sort of make decisions is um
41:06driving to and from the amenities to see what living there would be like that is exactly what
41:13you need to do to make sure that it will sustain you as an area and as a property as
41:17well but
41:19if it did would you do it oh yes i think we would i think so and i think the
41:26the most amazing thing
41:27about it is we would not have found that house if if you hadn't shown it to us so that
41:32kind of makes
41:33it feel even more goose bumpy for me how exciting very well it's been a real pleasure to welcome you
41:40back
41:41to the uk just let us know how you get on and what you do absolutely fabulous well we haven't
41:46got any
41:46champagne but cheers with a chip cheers to you thank you
41:56you know there really is something about the coastline here in cornwall which is genuinely
42:02beguiling particularly now as the sun begins to set over the horizon it is the end of the day but
42:08it is
42:08beginning clearly of phil and sal's new adventure not just an escape to the country but an escape back
42:18to the country of their birth a genuine homecoming and as they've both said it's not just about finding
42:24them a new home it's about finding them a place from which they can launch their new future a creative
42:32future together inspired by all of this fingers crossed they get to do it very soon i'll see you
42:41next time sal and phil didn't end up opting for our house number one but after viewing over 40 properties
42:49they've had an offer accepted on a farmhouse just outside helston and we wish them the very best in
42:55their new cornish home if you would like to escape to the country in england northern ireland scotland or
43:01wales and need our help why not apply online at bbc.co.uk forward slash take part
