00:00:00Currently delays at Junction 15 of the M4 due to ongoing improvement marks.
00:00:04That's your latest travel update from us here at the station.
00:00:07It's the 1st of December, so Christmas has officially started.
00:00:11And this is a classic.
00:00:14Jingle bell, jingle bell, jingle bell rock.
00:00:18Jingle bell swing and jingle bells ring.
00:00:22Snow and snow and snow and snow.
00:00:24Marjorie?
00:00:25Oh!
00:00:27Morning, Helen.
00:00:28Christmas begins.
00:00:30Jingle bell, jingle bell, jingle bell rock.
00:00:33Jingle bell time and jingle bell time.
00:00:37Dancing and prancing in jingle bell square.
00:00:41In the frosty air.
00:00:44Oh!
00:00:45Well, I'll get you with a nice cup of tea after that.
00:00:50I've never seen the town centre so busy.
00:00:56Oh, I'm sorry, Helen. I didn't know there was a team meeting.
00:00:59Oh, you're fine, Marjorie.
00:01:00I was just making a small announcement.
00:01:02You'll never believe it.
00:01:03She's only taking us away for the office Christmas party.
00:01:06It's been a tough old year.
00:01:08And I just want to say thank you to everyone for helping me get through it.
00:01:12Guess what?
00:01:13We're only going to the ruddy Caribbean.
00:01:15Oh, my goodness gracious me.
00:01:17Oh, although it does mean missing the away game of Colchester.
00:01:21What's that matter?
00:01:22It's the Caribbean.
00:01:24What a way to celebrate our...
00:01:25And you've properly budgeted for it, Mum?
00:01:27Yes, Neil. It's all accounted for.
00:01:29Quite sure?
00:01:31Oh, you know, I've always wanted to visit that part of the world.
00:01:37Oh, um...
00:01:39Not you, Marjorie, love. It's senior staff only.
00:01:42I am so sorry. I should have said.
00:01:44Oh, of course.
00:01:46I'm sorry, Helen.
00:01:47Silly old me.
00:01:49Duh.
00:01:53Oh, I... I probably should get that.
00:01:57We are so going bikini shopping after work.
00:02:02Oh, you might treat yourself to some speed, or was...
00:02:04Dougdale's branded merchandise. Marjorie speaking.
00:02:13Dougdale's branded merchandise. Marjorie speaking.
00:02:16Yes, I'll just put you through to her warehouse.
00:02:23That's a very generous product.
00:02:24Of the ancient blues and town,
00:02:26Da, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la.
00:02:28See the amazing blues before us.
00:02:31Da, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la.
00:02:33Strike the harp and join the chorus.
00:02:36Da, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la.
00:02:36Yeah, I love it.
00:02:39Bye-bye.
00:02:41Morning, hanging on,', the- facilitate.
00:02:46Da, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la.
00:02:48Love, love, love, love.
00:02:49Oh, we can tell.
00:02:51Ah, ah, ah, ah, ah, ah, ah, ah, ah, ah.
00:02:53Oh, ah, ah, ah, ah, ah.
00:02:56We've got fish to change right now.
00:02:57I'm so hot.
00:02:58Oh, oh.
00:03:28Happy Christmas.
00:03:31With it.
00:03:45Hi, Marjorie.
00:03:46I just want to let you know that there's a Commissioner Patterson arriving.
00:03:52It's a serious situation over here.
00:03:55Give him access to anything he needs.
00:03:58I've told the police here that we're going to cooperate fully.
00:04:00Will do, Helen.
00:04:02Oh, I hear him now.
00:04:03Um, we'll speak later.
00:04:05Okay.
00:04:07Ah!
00:04:08You must be the policeman from the Caribbean.
00:04:10Commissioner Patterson, is it?
00:04:12Selwyn Patterson.
00:04:15So, um, what has actually happened out there?
00:04:19The police were called to your colleague's Holiday Villa,
00:04:22where, I'm sorry to see, a man was found, shot dead, murdered.
00:04:27The police were called to her body.
00:04:28Uh...
00:04:40Uh...
00:04:43Uh...
00:04:44Uh...
00:04:46Uh...
00:05:11Good morning, Miss Baudet.
00:05:13Morning, Seb. It's a final rehearsal for the Nativity this evening.
00:05:18I wish you all the best and good luck to you, little king people.
00:05:22Yes, yes.
00:05:25Allez, let's go.
00:05:35Good morning, Sarge.
00:05:37Morning, Seb. Got a card from Darlene.
00:05:40Looks like she won't make it back for Christmas.
00:05:43Her auntie's still sick, so she's staying on Montserrat.
00:05:46Nothing in the post for the inspector, you know, from Antica.
00:05:51His brother, you mean?
00:05:53It's been three months.
00:05:55I guess it's like a lot, you know?
00:05:57I mean, getting a letter from a brother you never knew you had.
00:06:02Might take some time.
00:06:03I just feel sorry for him.
00:06:05He keeps saying he's fine about it, but I don't think he is.
00:06:11Where is D.I. Wilson?
00:06:13Rehearsing.
00:06:13Oh, yes. Oh, I am so jealous.
00:06:16He must be hyped up to wear that costume, huh?
00:06:19I bet he is.
00:06:22I'm really not happy about this.
00:06:24Why not, Mervyn?
00:06:25Because I look like a ninny.
00:06:27No, you don't.
00:06:29You look very...
00:06:32authentic.
00:06:33I just don't think the boots are helping.
00:06:39Look, with all due respect, Miss Baudet,
00:06:41I just think it'd be better off finding somebody else for this.
00:06:45You know, somebody less... me.
00:06:47Mervyn, it has always been the commissioner
00:06:50who carries out this task for me with him gone.
00:06:54Inspector.
00:06:56Great.
00:06:57Yes, sir.
00:06:58You look cool, man.
00:06:59Not another word.
00:07:00That's welcome.
00:07:02Could we have a chat, sir?
00:07:09We have a murder to attend.
00:07:12For real?
00:07:15Well, that's up, then.
00:07:16I've got word to do.
00:07:18Conversation over.
00:07:19Conversation paused.
00:07:20Sorry, Catherine.
00:07:21Come on, let's go.
00:07:23Inspector.
00:07:24Um...
00:07:24Inspector.
00:07:27You think maybe you should change first?
00:07:55The victim's name is Darion St. Jules.
00:07:58He's a victim.
00:07:59He's a local fisherman, lives half a mile up the coast.
00:08:02Right.
00:08:03The guests staying here are from the UK.
00:08:05They all say they haven't a clue who he is
00:08:08or what he was doing here.
00:08:10But clearly, someone must have shot him and left him there.
00:08:13Right.
00:08:15No sign of the gun, but paramedic sourcing with the bullet still lodged in the victim's shoulder.
00:08:21Cause of death was possibly from internal bleeding.
00:08:25Right.
00:08:26And what about you, Inspector?
00:08:28Anything of interest?
00:08:30Well, he certainly liked his aftershave.
00:08:33Have a sniff.
00:08:39I guess that's pretty strong.
00:08:41What if it's cause of his work?
00:08:43You know, slapped on the old cologne to cover the smell of fish.
00:08:47I know a big man in Tootin did the same thing.
00:08:49And that's what bothers you the most.
00:08:51The fact that the victim used a bit too much aftershave.
00:08:56Actually, what's bothering me the most
00:08:58is what's written on the palm of his left hand.
00:09:02Blitzen.
00:09:03Like the reindeer.
00:09:05It's the only one I can think of.
00:09:08Dasher, Dancer, Prancer, Vixen, Comet, Cupid, Donner, Blitzen.
00:09:13And Rudolph.
00:09:15Thank you, Officer Rose.
00:09:19The ink seems fresh.
00:09:21Which means he wrote it in the last 12 hours or so.
00:09:24And then not long after, he was shot.
00:09:27When it is Christmas, sir,
00:09:29could just be a coincidence.
00:09:37We have no idea who this guy is
00:09:38or what he's doing in our villa.
00:09:40So how can we know why he wrote the name
00:09:41of one of Santa's reindeer on his hand?
00:09:43I don't know.
00:09:44I'm just asking the question.
00:09:45Not a problem, is it?
00:09:48No.
00:09:49No, of course not.
00:09:50Let's start with you telling me
00:09:52what you're doing here on St. Marie.
00:09:54Well, we flew here for our office Christmas party.
00:09:57It wasn't cheap.
00:09:58We were having the time of our lives.
00:10:05Love to be.
00:10:06Life's a beat.
00:10:07Life's a beat.
00:10:08Life's a beat.
00:10:08Oh, no, no, no, no, no, no.
00:10:11Oh, my God.
00:10:13Everyone get in.
00:10:19maybe talk us through the events of last night yeah what happened exactly we said we take it
00:10:25easy for our last night
00:10:37then we got back here and carried on drinking yeah looks like quite a party you had yeah
00:10:42done right it was sorry that's not appropriate the rum out here it's it's stronger than we're used to
00:11:01and what time did the party end haven't got a clue me to be honest yeah it's all a little
00:11:06bit hazy
00:11:07i really don't remember very much you lot are lightweight man i remember everything
00:11:14helen you and me put neil to bed about midnight i'm sure i wasn't that bad oh you so were
00:11:22oh he's always had a low tolerance mom sorry love
00:11:27can we just yeah helen you went to bed as well
00:11:32me and you kept on it till about half three
00:11:38gab you were so cute you were dead to the world by then so uh i left you asleep in
00:11:44the hammock
00:11:45and then what
00:11:49oh and then um the taxi for the airport woke me up
00:11:55everyone wake up wake up
00:11:59that's when i saw him i thought he was asleep at first but when i got closer i saw the
00:12:04blood
00:12:05someone call an ambulance now
00:12:10you were in the hammock when whatever happened happened you didn't hear the gunshot
00:12:14well yeah yeah you'd have thought but well it's like helen said you know the room out here it's
00:12:19stronger than you used to
00:12:21inspector
00:12:24that's something you should see
00:12:28this is the only security camera footage from the villa
00:12:31footage is from this morning outside the front door
00:12:33the victim arrives at 5 32 a.m heads inside the door was unlocked so he let himself in
00:12:40after that nobody is seen leaving or arriving
00:12:43so the only way in or out is from the front
00:12:46and the drop of the back is too steep for access
00:12:50so it's got to be one of these four who shot down in st jules
00:12:53which means the gun that they used must still be here
00:12:56but they're all saying they've never met him before
00:12:59so why would one of them kill a total stranger
00:13:16hello can i help you
00:13:18have you come to check in
00:13:19the name's helen dugdale
00:13:21of course one moment please
00:13:24can't believe they're not letting us fly home
00:13:27it's police overreach is what it is
00:13:30so much for doing something different
00:13:33should have just gone to the red lion like last year
00:13:35none of this would have happened
00:13:39girl
00:13:40do you think there's something helen's not telling us
00:13:44she's been on edge ever since the police arrived
00:13:55so why did darian go to that villa at 5 30 in the morning
00:13:59let's see what we found at his house
00:14:06how are you getting on sir
00:14:08well i haven't found anything that connects our victim to the suspects
00:14:12but i have found this
00:14:13the victim's aftershave
00:14:14really this again
00:14:16it's different to the one he was wearing at the crime scene
00:14:19here have a sniff
00:14:23i haven't found any others here
00:14:25and there certainly wasn't one on his person
00:14:27so why did he smell different to the brand of aftershave that he owns
00:14:46so i searched the suspects the villa and surrounding areas and there was no bond
00:14:53no it has to be there no one left the villa after the victim was shot so the weapon has
00:14:57to be there somewhere
00:14:58yeah no i totally get the logic inspector
00:15:00but you ain't there for definite there's no gun at the villa
00:15:03but that doesn't make any sense
00:15:05so sorry excuse me
00:15:08hello yes
00:15:09well this is a strange one we've got four people suspected of shooting a man they don't know with a
00:15:14gun they don't have
00:15:15let's start working through the victim's laptop see what's on there
00:15:18we need to find that gun
00:15:23what actually sir it's the nativity service if you'd forgotten
00:15:27are you serious
00:15:28and we promised katherine we'd make sure you get there
00:15:32look we've got a murder case to solve in case you hadn't noticed
00:15:36and i haven't got time for play acting with a bunch of kids at some school nativity
00:15:39then you better find the time inspector
00:15:45why is she good evening to you inspector officer curtis was a pleasant surprise
00:15:52my niece is performing in the nativity tonight
00:15:56and word has got back to me that they might not have a narrator
00:16:00because the man who is supposed to be doing it is being a grumpy ghost about the whole thing
00:16:05grumpy now listen you listen to me you are doing it end of so get your backside down to that
00:16:12church

00:20:55Just wanted to check how you're doing
00:20:58Yeah, it wasn't Solomon on the phone
00:21:00Anyway, I've been thinking
00:21:03We really don't know anything about these people
00:21:07You know, their lives in the UK
00:21:10I was thinking we could use someone to do a bit of digging into our suspects back in their hometown
00:21:14Right, you want me to get in touch with the Swindon police?
00:21:17No, no, no, I've already done that
00:21:18They're flat out till New Year
00:21:20But then I remembered we do have someone in the UK
00:21:22Who maybe could give us a hand
00:21:32Ah!
00:21:33You must be the policeman from the Caribbean
00:21:35Commissioner Patterson, is it?
00:21:38Selwyn Patterson
00:21:39I'm no longer a commissioner
00:21:41I'm retired now
00:21:42Right, okay
00:21:44So now you're just...
00:21:46Helping out
00:21:47Somewhat reluctantly
00:21:49If I'm honest with you
00:21:51So, um
00:21:52What has actually happened out there?
00:21:55The police were called to your colleague's holiday villa
00:21:58Where, I'm sorry to see
00:21:59A man was found
00:22:01Shot dead
00:22:02Murdered
00:22:04I'm keen to get on with things and get out of here as quickly as I can
00:22:09Rightio
00:22:09Well, I'll give you the guided tour
00:22:12Welcome to Dugdale's branded merchandise
00:22:17So, that desk over there is Helen
00:22:20She's the managing director
00:22:22This desk belongs to our graphic designer, Gavin
00:22:26Accounts manager, Neil
00:22:28And Karen, head of sales
00:22:30And this one?
00:22:31Oh, oh, she's not here anymore
00:22:33She left a couple of months ago
00:22:36Who?
00:22:37Ashley
00:22:38Ashley Sims, her name was
00:22:40It was all somewhat clandestine, if you ask me, Mr Patterson
00:22:48She did what they call a midnight flit
00:22:50Never came back
00:22:53Are you sure you don't want a cup of tea?
00:22:55I'm going to make myself one
00:22:57This drawer is locked
00:22:59Oh, yes
00:23:00It's been like that since Ashley left
00:23:02She has the only key
00:23:04I've been meaning to sort it
00:23:26Commissioner
00:23:27You do know what time it is over here, right?
00:23:30Half past three in the morning
00:23:31But as I've abandoned a good friend's wedding to travel to Swindon
00:23:35And help you out
00:23:36Okay, fair do's
00:23:37How can I help?
00:23:38The bullet you recovered from your victim
00:23:41Have you had the ballistics report back on it yet?
00:23:43Yeah, it was a .45 calibre
00:23:45Most likely fired from a pistol
00:23:47And did you find the weapon?
00:23:49No
00:23:50Why?
00:23:51Because I'm currently looking at a .45 calibre pistol
00:23:55In a desk drawer
00:23:58In Swindon
00:24:00Well, it can't be the same one
00:24:04Can it?
00:24:21Morning, sir
00:24:22Morning, Inspector
00:24:24This can't be right
00:24:26It just can't be
00:24:27What's going on?
00:24:28Commissioner found a gun
00:24:29Locked in the desk drawer
00:24:31Of an ex-employee called Ashley Sims
00:24:33In the Dugdale's offices back in the UK
00:24:35What?
00:24:36Local forensic lab fast-tracked it
00:24:38And they say that is the gun
00:24:39That fired the bullet
00:24:40That killed Darren St. Jules
00:24:43Look
00:24:44Security footage shows that no one touched that drawer since the shooting
00:24:47Wait, so how was that gun used to shoot Darren St. Jules on this island
00:24:51If the same gun was locked in a drawer 5,000 miles away?
00:24:54I know, right?
00:24:56It makes no sense
00:25:00We need to speak to Helen Dugdale
00:25:14If you're in there, can you open the door, please?
00:25:16We need to speak with you about Ashley Sims
00:25:24There's something you need to see
00:25:28I guess
00:25:29I want to say sorry
00:25:32I know it's not enough
00:25:34And
00:25:35But it won't change how you feel about me
00:25:37But
00:25:39I do mean it
00:25:42I don't know why I keep doing this
00:25:47Blow everything up
00:25:51But
00:25:53This is why I've come here
00:25:57To get away
00:26:01Try and understand
00:26:03Why I
00:26:06Hurt people
00:26:07That's Ashley
00:26:08The way that I do
00:26:12She stole from me
00:26:13From the company
00:26:14How much?
00:26:15500,000 pounds
00:26:16Ouch
00:26:19My husband
00:26:19Keith
00:26:21Dougdales was his company
00:26:22Until he
00:26:23Passed away at the start of the year from a heart attack
00:26:25I'm sorry to hear that
00:26:29That's when I took over the reins
00:26:31I really wanted to make it work
00:26:33And it was around that time that we had a position to fill
00:26:35And you gave the job to Miss Sims
00:26:39I knew she had a past
00:26:40That she'd been to prison
00:26:41But Keith always believed in giving people a second chance
00:26:44And I wanted to honour that
00:26:45What Miss Sims let you down?
00:26:48Not even a year's past
00:26:49And I've already lost half a million pounds
00:26:51Did you report Ashley to the police?
00:26:54I was too embarrassed
00:26:56So I
00:26:57I hired someone to find out
00:26:59Where she sent the email from
00:27:00And that video she recorded
00:27:02That was sent from this island?
00:27:04Yes
00:27:06Okay
00:27:07So what does any of this have to do with Darian St. George?
00:27:10The man I hired discovered that Darian had rented a holiday let to Ashley
00:27:14That's why I came here to try and get my money back
00:27:16I made sure our villa wasn't far from Darian's house
00:27:19So it would be easy to go and visit him
00:27:21So you were lying when you told us you didn't know Darian?
00:27:23Did you meet with him?
00:27:26Yes
00:27:26A few days ago
00:27:28He confirmed that Ashley had rented this little place he has down on the beach
00:27:32That's her?
00:27:33So she was definitely here
00:27:36She'd arrived a few months ago
00:27:38At the start of October
00:27:40He still had all the paperwork
00:27:42But he said that she'd moved on a few days ago
00:27:44And he didn't know where
00:27:46So what was Darian doing turning up at your villa in the early hours yesterday?
00:27:51I don't know
00:27:53I really don't
00:27:54How much do the others know about this?
00:27:56Nothing
00:27:56They don't know anything
00:27:57They think they're on a works do
00:27:58Not even your son?
00:28:00No
00:28:00Not even Neil
00:28:01So then the only person who knew Darian and therefore wanted him killed was you?
00:28:06No
00:28:06I swear I didn't
00:28:09I can see how this looks
00:28:12But I didn't shoot him
00:28:13I don't
00:28:14I need to take this
00:28:22Commissioner
00:28:22You got something?
00:28:24Inspector
00:28:24I've searched Ashley Sims' flat and emailed you over some photographs
00:28:29I'm afraid there is little of use to your investigation
00:28:32I think she cleared out her flat before she flew to the Caribbean
00:28:35Okay
00:28:36Thanks anyway, sir
00:28:38Now, if that is everything
00:28:40I'm going to catch my train and enjoy the rest of my Christmas
00:28:44Yeah, you have a good one, sir
00:28:46And you, Inspector
00:28:47And you
00:28:56Thank you for your help, Miss Gordes
00:28:59I didn't do anything, really
00:29:01And you're nothing if not efficient
00:29:04So
00:29:07What are your plans for Christmas?
00:29:08I'm spending it with my daughter and her partner
00:29:11They've rented a cottage up in the, um, Yorkshire Dales
00:29:16Oh, it's lovely up there
00:29:17So I'm told
00:29:18I'd better
00:29:19I'm flying solo this Christmas
00:29:21I mean, that's how it's been since Mum passed
00:29:25Just me, myself and I
00:29:26Sorry
00:29:27I really
00:29:28Oh, no, no, no
00:29:29I rather enjoy it, actually
00:29:31You know, there's no family arguments
00:29:33I can eat what I like
00:29:34Watch what I want on the telly
00:29:36Christmas alone is underrated, I say
00:29:39Indeed
00:29:40No, I really don't want to miss my dream
00:29:48Goodbye, Mr. Patterson
00:29:50Goodbye
00:29:51And Merry Christmas
00:29:54And a very Merry Christmas to you
00:29:59Four passengers on Platform 1
00:30:02Awaiting the 3152
00:30:05Leave
00:30:05Please be aware that due to frost on the line
00:30:09This train is now delayed
00:30:11Please wait for further announcements
00:30:30So, immigration confirmed Ashley Sims arrived on the island two months ago
00:30:36But they have no record of her ever leaving
00:30:39So, in theory, she's still here
00:30:45Okay, Officer Rose
00:30:46I want you to check the harbors
00:30:47See if anyone matching Ashley's description was taken to one of the other islands in the last few days
00:30:51Ashley Harbor, last few days, got you
00:30:53Check the hotels, holiday rentals, guest houses on the island
00:30:56Hotels, rentals, guest houses, got you
00:30:58You need to do whatever it takes to find her, do you understand?
00:31:01Cool, totally getting you right now, Inspector
00:31:03I guess that means we're working Christmas Day then
00:31:06Obviously, it's a murder investigation
00:31:08And we need to find out who did it
00:31:11Right, only that's a lot of work for Seb to do by himself over Christmas
00:31:16Well, my mother has a whole church thing going on and everybody else is busy so, it's cool
00:31:21There you go, sorted
00:31:25Thanks, Seb
00:31:26No worries, see you in a bit
00:31:30I'll let my parents know I won't be flying home this evening
00:31:33Appreciate it
00:31:35Ashley Sims aside, we still don't have a scooby
00:31:38How the killer made the gun they shot Darian with disappear from that villa
00:31:42Then reappear in a locked desk drawer back in the UK
00:31:47And that, Blitzen, what's that about?
00:31:51Unless it has nothing to do with Darian's murder, sir
00:31:54And it is just a co-
00:31:56You don't believe in coincidences
00:31:59I mean, in what circumstance does someone write the name of one of Sansa's reindeer on the palm of their
00:32:03hand?
00:32:08Are you doing all right, sir?
00:32:10After last night
00:32:12Look, if Solomon doesn't want to get in touch, I'm cool with that
00:32:16Well...
00:32:16D.S. Thomas
00:32:18I'd rather we didn't talk about it anymore
00:32:32All right
00:32:33I'm at Swindon East
00:32:37And?
00:32:38Your tannoy keeps announcing there is a rail replacement service to Leeds
00:32:43But it hasn't turned up
00:32:45Yeah, it got cancelled
00:32:49I'm sorry?
00:32:50The service replacing the service that got cancelled also got cancelled?
00:32:56Yeah, that's about the sum of it
00:32:57Don't want trains until Boxing Day
00:33:00So...
00:33:01What do you suggest I do?
00:33:04D'oh, mate
00:33:04Have a merry one, yeah?
00:33:07See ya
00:33:10Merry Christmas to you, too
00:33:22I'm sorry, mate
00:33:23But it's Christmas Eve
00:33:24And none of my drivers are going to want to go outside of Swindon
00:33:27Have you tried a hire car company?
00:33:28Yes
00:33:30Yes
00:33:30But nothing is available in the area until the 27th
00:33:39You have no rooms available at all?
00:33:43We're fully booked
00:33:44Everywhere will be this time of year
00:33:46Maybe you could try the Salvation Army?
00:33:56This is Andrina
00:33:57Leave me a message when you hear the peep
00:34:01It's me
00:34:02I'm still in Swindon
00:34:03There's no transport
00:34:05No hotels
00:34:07And there's no one here who seems able to help me
00:34:11And I don't know what to do
00:34:20Mr. Patterson
00:34:23I think you'd better come with me
00:34:30How did you know I would still be here?
00:34:33Had the local radio on
00:34:34Said all trains cancelled
00:34:37And we've got to look after each other at Christmas, haven't we?
00:34:43Thank you
00:34:44Miss Dobbs
00:34:45It must be crazy
00:34:46Yes
00:34:47After you
00:34:48Thank you
00:35:03Good morning to you all
00:35:05It's six o'clock on this beautiful Christmas Day morning
00:35:08Here on San Marie
00:35:09And there's a surprise guest with me here in the studio
00:35:12I've got a young officer
00:35:13Sebastian Rose from the San Marie Police talking with me right now
00:35:17Yes
00:35:18It is me
00:35:18Officer Sebastian Rose from Honoré Police Station
00:35:22Merry Christmas everybody
00:35:23He and his colleagues want your help
00:35:25Looking for a young woman called Ashley Sims
00:35:28Am I right?
00:35:29That is it
00:35:30You are totally right Alphonse
00:35:31If anybody has heard anything
00:35:33Or seen anything
00:35:35Well, what I would say, Jacinta
00:35:38Is even if it was just a glimpse
00:35:40One of your people's had of this woman
00:35:42They should still get in touch
00:35:44Oh, Seb
00:35:45Oh, and also
00:35:46The people can check out the video I made
00:35:49On our social media page
00:35:51At SM Police
00:35:52Ashley Sims, I'm your senior
00:35:54If you see her call is number Ashley Sims, I've seen her
00:35:59If you see her call is number Ashley Sims, I've seen her
00:36:04If you see her call...
00:36:19Commissioner, morning
00:36:21This is a surprise
00:36:23Inspector
00:36:23Have you seen that video Officer Rose has put on social media?
00:36:28It's deeply inappropriate
00:36:31Would you like another sherry, Selman?
00:36:33Uh, no
00:36:37Thank you
00:36:39Wow, is that
00:36:40Is that the receptionist?
00:36:43Marjorie Dons
00:36:44I'm spending Christmas Day with her
00:36:47Well, I'm glad you two hit it off
00:36:48Good for you, sir
00:36:49It's not like that, Inspector
00:36:51I got stock in Swindon
00:36:53There were no trains to Leeds
00:36:54Okay
00:36:55Look, just take that video down
00:36:58No disrespect, sir
00:36:59But, um, it's not really your problem anymore, is it?
00:37:02Just sort it
00:37:03Inspector
00:37:04Inspector
00:37:13Yeah, I've got his bank statement in front of me
00:37:15That's great, could you email it over?
00:37:18I'll do that right away
00:37:19Cheers
00:37:30Literally every tree
00:37:31If you've seen her call this number
00:37:34If you've seen her call this number
00:37:42All right, I'm coming
00:37:48I've got a lead
00:37:49I've got a lead
00:37:50A possible suspect for Darian St. Julesy's murder
00:37:52I need to go and talk with him now
00:37:54Merry Christmas, sir
00:37:58Oh, um
00:38:00Merry Christmas
00:38:03I'll be right with you
00:38:14Our financial checks show that two days ago
00:38:17You wired £100,000 from this island
00:38:20To your bank account back in England
00:38:22No, he didn't
00:38:29What?
00:38:31You want to tell us where you got that money from?
00:38:34What did you do, Liam?
00:38:35Yes, Neil
00:38:36What did you do?
00:38:38I followed you
00:38:40Why?
00:38:41You were acting so weird
00:38:43A few days ago
00:38:44When you went off by yourself
00:38:46I knew that it had to be about the money that Ashley had taken
00:38:49I'm sorry
00:38:50I couldn't understand why you didn't tell me
00:38:51And I know you were just trying to protect me, Mum
00:38:53I was worried about you
00:38:55I was just trying to help
00:38:59So I waited until the guy, Darian, had left
00:39:04Doors unlocked, so I let myself in
00:39:06There wasn't anything I could find
00:39:08Until I found an old biscuit tin
00:39:10It was full of money
00:39:12And what did you think?
00:39:13When you opened it and saw £100,000 in cash inside
00:39:17Well, I still think
00:39:18That it was money that belonged to the company
00:39:20I mean, why else would this local fisherman
00:39:23Have that much money in sterling in his house?
00:39:25And that's why you took it?
00:39:27Because it was money that Ashley had stolen from us
00:39:29From Mum
00:39:32And I don't want to see her lose everything
00:39:36After she'd already lost my dad
00:39:39Sorry, Tom
00:39:44All right
00:39:45Okay
00:39:47So, fast forward to the morning you're due to leave the island, yeah?
00:39:51And our victim turns up at 5.30
00:39:54We've been trying to work out why he went there that morning
00:39:57But what if he realised that you stole from him
00:40:01And came to confront you about it?
00:40:03No
00:40:04On my life, I didn't even see him that morning
00:40:07It's aftershave
00:40:08It's yours, right?
00:40:10Ravage Mystique
00:40:11Yeah?
00:40:12Why?
00:40:12This is the exact same aftershave Darian was wearing
00:40:15The morning of the murder
00:40:17Right?
00:40:20You're not suggesting that this is evidence I shot him
00:40:23Why would I kill someone and then spray him with my own aftershave?
00:40:27Achoo!
00:40:31Darian definitely smelt of this when we found him
00:40:34But why?
00:40:37What if
00:40:38There was another smell the killer was trying to hide
00:40:41You know, a bit like a bin man
00:40:44Yeah, but
00:40:45What?
00:40:48Neil's right
00:40:49It's not enough
00:40:51What's some Christmas this is?
00:40:53Oh
00:40:53Come here
00:40:54Give your mum a hug
00:40:57Oh, hang on, sorry
00:41:03Oh, no
00:41:04Not now, Marjorie
00:41:06Hi, this is Helen Dugdale's phone
00:41:08Please leave a message after the tone
00:41:09I'll call you back
00:41:11Hello, Helen
00:41:12It's Marjorie
00:41:13I'm phoning to wish you a Merry Christmas
00:41:16We're about to have our lunch
00:41:17And I just wanted to let you know that I'm thinking of you
00:41:20Hope everything sorts itself out soon
00:41:31Dinner is served
00:41:37This looks wonderful
00:41:39Thank you
00:41:44Here's to a Merry Christmas
00:41:48Merry Christmas
00:41:54Right then
00:41:55Tuck in
00:41:58I would like to offer you
00:42:01An apology
00:42:02Miss Dodds
00:42:03Oh, Marjorie
00:42:05Please
00:42:05There's really no need for an apology
00:42:08Oh, there is
00:42:09You've been nothing but gracious and welcoming
00:42:12For the last couple of days
00:42:14While I
00:42:16I've been nothing but, um
00:42:19Routy
00:42:19Oh, no, no
00:42:22I wouldn't go that far
00:42:24Though
00:42:27I did sense you weren't very happy
00:42:30Is it to do with your old job?
00:42:32What makes you ask that?
00:42:34I don't know
00:42:35It's just
00:42:36When we first met
00:42:37The way you said you were retired
00:42:39It was like you weren't entirely comfortable with it
00:42:42My superiors back on St. Marie
00:42:46They tried to get rid of me
00:42:48After 50 years
00:42:50Of doing a job I loved
00:42:55In the end
00:42:56I
00:42:57I just walked away
00:42:59I know what it's like
00:43:02I'm just
00:43:03Silly old Marjorie
00:43:04On reception
00:43:06Don't even get invited
00:43:07To the Christmas party
00:43:08They're having out there
00:43:09I'm sorry
00:43:12And I've always wanted
00:43:14To go to the Caribbean
00:43:21Look at us
00:43:23Whooping like this
00:43:24On Christmas Day
00:43:25When you cook this feast for us
00:43:28We should be enjoying ourselves
00:43:31Here
00:43:32Will you do me the pleasure?
00:43:35Oh, well
00:43:35If you insist
00:43:38I won
00:43:40I won
00:43:41Oh
00:43:42Where's it gone?
00:43:44Where's it gone?
00:43:45No
00:43:47Oh
00:43:49It's a tiny little sewing kit
00:43:57All right
00:43:57Let me check with the inspector
00:44:00Okay, speak to you soon
00:44:01All right
00:44:04Hey
00:44:05Merry Christmas, guys
00:44:06Merry Christmas, Seth
00:44:08Hey, dear
00:44:10Now, where are we at
00:44:11With the search for Ashley Sims?
00:44:13So, um
00:44:13B&Bs
00:44:15Hotels
00:44:15Guest horses
00:44:17Nobody's heard from her
00:44:18And no one's called in
00:44:19With a sighting either
00:44:19It's like she's vanished into thin air
00:44:21Oh, and uh
00:44:22Catherine just called
00:44:23She said she can still squeeze us in
00:44:25For her Christmas Day lunch
00:44:26But it's her last sitting
00:44:27So
00:44:27We have to go now
00:44:29Are we still asking ourselves
00:44:30How was Darian shot with a bullet
00:44:32Fired from a gun
00:44:34Locked in a drawer
00:44:35In Swindon
00:44:35At the time that it happened
00:44:38And what has Blitzen
00:44:39Got to do with all of this?
00:44:42Are you coming, sir?
00:44:45Well, yeah
00:44:45You guys go
00:44:46I'll just keep working
00:44:48Are you sure, sir?
00:44:50Wait a minute
00:44:52What are these?
00:44:53Oh
00:44:54Those are the invices, sir
00:44:56You know
00:44:56For the stuff
00:44:57For organized help
00:44:58Find Ashley Sims
00:44:59You have, um
00:45:00Posters
00:45:01Adverts
00:45:01For TV and radio
00:45:02And, uh
00:45:03There's over a thousand dollars
00:45:04That we owe
00:45:04We can't afford this
00:45:05Well, uh
00:45:06Well, how big do you think
00:45:07Our budget was?
00:45:07It's only because
00:45:08You said
00:45:09Whatever it takes
00:45:10Yeah, but not this much
00:45:12I mean, what were you thinking?
00:45:13All right
00:45:14Let's
00:45:15Let's calm it
00:45:19Seb, why don't you
00:45:20Head over to Catherine's
00:45:21And I'll catch up with you
00:45:28With respect
00:45:30He's just doing
00:45:31His best to help
00:45:33And he's given up
00:45:34His Christmas
00:45:35To do it, sir
00:45:39Look, I know
00:45:39The case is frustrating
00:45:40And you've got other things
00:45:41On your mind
00:45:42What other things?
00:45:44Well
00:45:44Your brother not calling
00:45:46What?
00:45:47That's not bothering me
00:45:50It isn't
00:45:50It isn't?
00:45:51No, it isn't
00:45:52Yes, it is
00:45:53Of course it is
00:45:55And I really wish
00:45:57You'd just admit that
00:45:58Rather than pretending
00:45:59Like you don't care
00:45:59When you so clearly
00:46:00Care
00:46:13Just don't take it out
00:46:14On the rest of us
00:46:48Joyeux Noël, Camille
00:46:50And to little Chloe
00:46:51Her grandmother
00:46:53Is missing her today
00:46:54Has she opened a present yet?
00:46:56No, not yet
00:46:57Ah, one moment, Camille
00:46:59Yes, okay
00:47:00We'll see you
00:47:07No moving?
00:47:56No moving
00:48:13Inspector, everything all right?
00:48:15I'm feeling bad, sir, about messing up your Christmas.
00:48:18I'm sorry you couldn't get to spend it with your daughter.
00:48:20It's not your fault.
00:48:21If anyone's to blame, it's the British transport system,
00:48:25which I am told is not uncommon.
00:48:27I mean, I'd like to say you'd get used to it by being lying.
00:48:31Just a minute.
00:48:47Is that the sea?
00:48:48I got here.
00:48:50Yeah, I'm at the shack.
00:48:52It's beautiful out here.
00:48:54It's a really clear night,
00:48:56but then all nights are like that here, aren't they?
00:48:58The moon here is a little more grey
00:49:01than I remember it in St. Marie.
00:49:12I'm just wondering if I made a mistake
00:49:14staying on in St. Marie.
00:49:16Why?
00:49:18Because I know I'm not good when I put myself on the line.
00:49:21I feel like I'm just hanging around, waiting.
00:49:25Your brother?
00:49:28Yeah.
00:49:32I don't think he wants to get in touch.
00:49:38I'm sorry, it's not really your problem anymore, is it?
00:49:40Whether I stay or go.
00:49:41But it still feels like it is.
00:49:48Inspector.
00:49:49If you are not sure what to do,
00:49:52the only advice I can offer is that
00:49:54you put your trust in that island.
00:49:57I did for most of my life.
00:50:02And in return,
00:50:04it delivered me
00:50:05true happiness.
00:50:11If St. Marie
00:50:13won't bring your brother to you,
00:50:15then
00:50:16perhaps
00:50:17it will bring you
00:50:21someone
00:50:21or something else.
00:50:26be
00:50:26patient.
00:50:28Yeah, well,
00:50:30you know patience isn't my forte, right?
00:50:32I know.
00:50:34But what am I supposed to do in the meantime?
00:50:36Might I suggest
00:50:38you focus
00:50:39on solving that case,
00:50:41you have.
00:50:44You're missed here,
00:50:45you know?
00:50:51Good night, Inspector.
00:50:53Good night.
00:51:06Good night.
00:51:13Bird.
00:51:14Good night.
00:51:26Blitzen, why Blitzen?
00:51:30Officer Rose?
00:51:31Inspector.
00:51:33What's up?
00:51:34I wanted to come and say I'm sorry for spending all that money you don't have in your budget.
00:51:39So I wanted to pay it back.
00:51:47There's $322.86 in there, which I took from my savings.
00:51:52I mean, it's all my savings, but that's cool.
00:51:55And if you deduct $20 from my wages each month, you should be paid back in about two years, I
00:52:02reckon.
00:52:04Officer Rose, you've got a good heart.
00:52:09Anyone ever tell you that?
00:52:10Well, my auntie, like, all the time, you know?
00:52:18Take this.
00:52:19You don't have to pay anything back.
00:52:22We'll find it in the budget.
00:52:24And there's no need to apologise, alright?
00:52:27In fact, I should apologise for blazing at you like that.
00:52:31What you did was, erm, was really good work.
00:52:37Anyway, come on.
00:52:38I've got a new lead.
00:52:39Let's go and wait D.S. Thomas up.
00:52:47He can't keep doing this.
00:52:50Happy Boxing Day, D.S. Thomas.
00:52:54Listen, erm, I wanna apologise for losing it and ruining Christmas.
00:53:02I'll make it up to you.
00:53:04I promise.
00:53:07And you were right about me taking it out on you because of Solomon.
00:53:14I just really wanted it, you know?
00:53:20I'm sorry too.
00:53:23Good morning, Sarge.
00:53:25The inspector tell you the good news yet?
00:53:28He's only gonna make a big breakthrough in the case, which is a big relief.
00:53:31Cause I was drawing a blank.
00:53:33Ya tea?
00:53:37So I've been going through Darien St. George's phone records.
00:53:40And he phoned someone the day before he was murdered.
00:53:42A friend of his called Trishawn King.
00:53:45Now he was over on Montserrat for Christmas.
00:53:48So I asked Darlene to speak with him.
00:53:51Darlene?
00:53:52Last night?
00:53:53Yeah.
00:53:53And how was she with that?
00:53:55Er, you know, she was... she was cool with it.
00:53:59Inspector, it's Christmas Day.
00:54:01What in God's name do you think you're doing?
00:54:08Anyway, it turned out Darien feared for his life.
00:54:12And he was asking Trishawn where he can get hold of a gun for protection.
00:54:16He thought someone was going to kill him.
00:54:18Did he say who?
00:54:20Hmm.
00:54:21But he did say he was caught up in something he shouldn't have.
00:54:23And get this.
00:54:24He thought the woman he was trying to help had been murdered.
00:54:27Now I'm caught up in it all.
00:54:29And now he was worried that he was going to suffer the same fate.
00:54:32Whoa, wait.
00:54:33Darien told Trishawn he thought Ashley Sims was murdered?
00:54:37But it would explain why no one's seen her the last few days.
00:54:40So then, if this is true, that means that whoever killed Ashley Sims probably also murdered Darien St. Jude.
00:54:47To silence him.
00:54:49So what we need to start looking for now is anyone who had a reason to kill Ashley Sims.
00:54:54But both Helen and Neil Dugdale to start with.
00:54:56Ashley stole half a million pounds from their company.
00:55:01And there's someone else as well.
00:55:09We've been looking at your phone records.
00:55:11And these, Miss Hickson, are text messages from you to Ashley Sims just before she came out here.
00:55:17You'll regret ever meeting me.
00:55:19Stay away from my boyfriend or else I'm not afraid to hurt you.
00:55:25The list goes on.
00:55:27Care to explain?
00:55:29They had a thing, right?
00:55:32Gavin and Ashley had a thing behind my back.
00:55:35Sort of.
00:55:37Sort of?
00:55:40Yeah, like, it wasn't like a real thing.
00:55:41Like, they never really got together, but...
00:55:43But he liked her.
00:55:46Yeah.
00:55:48God knows why.
00:55:49She was weird.
00:55:50But I think Gav liked that about her.
00:55:52And he called things off between us.
00:55:58And that's when I started warning her off.
00:55:59Guess I just got a bit carried away.
00:56:02I just...
00:56:04I just didn't want to lose him.
00:56:06And you didn't?
00:56:08Now that Ashley's conveniently disappeared,
00:56:11you've got Gavin to yourself now, haven't you?
00:56:13What?
00:56:14Is that what you think?
00:56:15That I killed her?
00:56:20No, I wouldn't.
00:56:22I didn't.
00:56:23It'll be about Gavin.
00:56:26We need to tell him what we know.
00:56:28But Ashley called things off with Gav.
00:56:31Why would I kill her?
00:56:32Inspector.
00:56:34You need to hear the truth.
00:56:35What?
00:56:37And I'm afraid you're not going to get that from her.
00:56:39No disrespect, Karen.
00:56:40Oh, come on, man.
00:56:42What are you saying?
00:56:43Whatever she's told you, it's ten times worse.
00:56:46Neil, what are you saying?
00:56:47Whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa.
00:56:48You've had your chance.
00:56:49Go on.
00:56:51He had a thing for Ashley.
00:56:53Is that it?
00:56:54We already know.
00:56:55Well, no, it was more than that.
00:56:56Gavin was obsessed.
00:56:58When Ashley said they couldn't see each other anymore,
00:57:00he had to take time off work.
00:57:02And I've seen the posters you've been putting up.
00:57:03If Ashley's gone missing,
00:57:04then I'm telling you,
00:57:06it'll have something to do with Gavin.
00:57:08Inspector.
00:57:14Someone's just broken into the villa where Darion was shot.
00:57:59Mr. Bradbury, this doesn't look good at all.
00:58:05But then I don't think you need me to tell you that.
00:58:11You want to start by telling us
00:58:12what we're going to find in that pool you've just emptied?
00:58:14And we know it's not the gun used to kill Darion St. Jules,
00:58:18because that's currently sitting in a police station somewhere in Swindon.
00:58:21So what's down there?
00:58:22Why have you come back to the crime scene, Gavin?
00:58:24What's so important?
00:58:25Inspector.
00:58:26Found something.
00:58:28What is it?
00:58:29A bullet.
00:58:31One that's been fired.
00:58:37Why is there a bullet in the pool, Gav?
00:58:40It's like...
00:58:43Keepsake.
00:58:45Something to remember Ashley by.
00:58:50A bullet?
00:58:52There are other things that I've got of hers as well.
00:58:55Like...
00:58:57More like normal things.
00:58:59I'm really not interested in those, funny enough.
00:59:02Ashley, she's...
00:59:04She's not like anyone I've ever met before.
00:59:06Like, it was exciting being around her.
00:59:08And her life was so different to mine.
00:59:12Yeah, I hear that.
00:59:13The bullet?
00:59:14Yeah.
00:59:16She has a gun.
00:59:18She was looking after it as a favour for someone that she knew from prison.
00:59:22And she...
00:59:24Well...
00:59:24We...
00:59:25Went out to the woods one day and she let me fire it.
00:59:28It was amazing, right?
00:59:30It was a...
00:59:31You know, like exhilarating.
00:59:33And I went and got one of the bullets.
00:59:34You know, like I said that I would keep it with me.
00:59:36To remind me of her.
00:59:38And they say romance is dead.
00:59:41So, why did it end up in the pool?
00:59:44I panicked.
00:59:45When there was that dead guy and Neil called the police.
00:59:50I was worried that if you found it, you'd think it was me that shot him.
00:59:53So, I took it out and I was wondering what to do and...
00:59:57I dropped it.
00:59:59It fell in the pool.
01:00:02And the more you were sniffing around, the more I started to worry that you'd find it.
01:00:05So, I came back and I...
01:00:10So, you loved Ashley then?
01:00:13Yeah, I guess, yeah.
01:00:16Must have really hurt when she ended things.
01:00:20Gavin, we believe Ashley Sims was murdered on this island in the last few days.
01:00:26What? No. What? If she can't be?
01:00:28And we're kind of wondering if maybe you did it.
01:00:30Me?
01:00:33Why would I kill Ashley?
01:00:34Because you couldn't have her.
01:00:36And it hurt like hell.
01:00:37No, no, no, no. You've got this wrong.
01:00:38I didn't kill her.
01:00:40I owe that man.
01:00:42You seem a bit edgy, Gavin.
01:00:45Is there something you aren't telling us?
01:00:47There's nothing.
01:00:50Really, there is nothing.
01:00:58Paradise Court Hotel, please.
01:01:06What is it that he's not saying?
01:01:09No.
01:01:14Hey, this is Ashley's phone. You know what to do.
01:01:17Ashley, it's me.
01:01:18We need to talk. I'm worried about you.
01:01:21The police have been asking questions and I think they know about us, so...
01:01:26Just let me know what you want me to do, yeah?
01:01:28Please call me back.
01:01:30I love you.
01:01:43You all right, sir?
01:01:45You seem a bit tense.
01:01:47I just can't work this one out.
01:01:49I mean, we've got one potential murder victim whose body we haven't found, another murder victim whose body we have
01:01:56found, but that murder weapon was locked in a desk drawer on the other side of the world when that
01:02:00murder took place.
01:02:01I mean, where do we even start?
01:02:03Well, sounds like you need to go get a little shoulder rub, you know? Release some of that tension.
01:02:09No, you all right, Officer Rose.
01:02:13Ah, this guy again.
01:02:16Listen, mate, I told you before, I'm not interested in upgrading to another phone, so stop calling me, eh?
01:02:22Is that Mervyn Wilson?
01:02:24Yeah, it's still Mervyn Wilson and I'm still not interested.
01:02:27It's me, Solomon, your brother.
01:02:36Are you there, Mervyn?
01:02:40Mervyn?
01:02:42Yes, yes, he's here. Don't hang up.
01:02:56Uh, Solomon.
01:03:00It's Mervyn.
01:03:02Yeah, it's always, you know that.
01:03:05Look, mate, I'm sorry. I just wasn't expecting your call.
01:03:09Yeah, I know.
01:03:10I'm sorry it's taken me so long to get in touch, but it was, you know.
01:03:16No, no, no, mate, I totally understand, yeah?
01:03:19I mean, it's a process, right?
01:03:22But, um, hey, you're calling now, aren't you?
01:03:25Yeah, man, it's a process.
01:03:27But I'm glad to be calling now.
01:03:33Are you still there?
01:03:36Mervyn?
01:03:37Yeah, yeah, I'm still here.
01:03:42Look, um, Solomon, I'm really, really sorry to do this to you.
01:03:47And I am so glad you called and that we're finally speaking.
01:03:50And I really, really want us to talk again, but...
01:03:55Right now, there's something I need to do, yeah?
01:04:00Yeah, man, no problem. Go tell us soon.
01:04:03That was quick.
01:04:05Officer Rose, that billboard, you did that, right?
01:04:08Yes, sir, I did.
01:04:11But you should already have the invoice for that.
01:04:12It's not going to cost any extra.
01:04:14No, no, no, I don't care about the cost.
01:04:15It was worth every penny.
01:04:16Come, come, come look.
01:04:23You see, all along, we've been looking at Ashley's footage on phone screens and laptops, yeah?
01:04:29Well, they were too small.
01:04:31I don't understand.
01:04:33You see where Ashley is?
01:04:35This is a still from the video she made.
01:04:37And in the background, there's a ship passing by.
01:04:41Now, before that was just a speck, but now you've blown it up. Look at it.
01:04:46What about the ship?
01:04:48Look at what it's called.
01:04:52Blitzen.
01:04:53Blitzen!
01:04:55Yeah?
01:04:56Now we know.
01:04:58Oh, Officer Rose, if you were so tall, I'd kiss you.
01:05:02Why would Darian write the name of that ship on his hands?
01:05:06Well, he obviously saw the footage himself and then, um, he saw something in it.
01:05:11But what?
01:05:18Blitzen.
01:05:19It's like she's vanished into thin airs.
01:05:21Why have come here?
01:05:21I thought I was helping someone.
01:05:24You know what?
01:05:25I think I'm starting to work out what went down here.
01:05:29But I need to make a phone call.
01:05:32And you need to get onto airport security.
01:05:34Come on.
01:05:37All right, mate.
01:05:38Much appreciated.
01:05:39Cheers.
01:05:41Wow.
01:05:43What's wow?
01:05:46So, that ship behind Ashley Sims, it's owned by a Scandinavian container shipping company.
01:05:52Now, we know from the information on that footage, Ashley recorded it on the 4th of October, right?
01:05:57Right.
01:05:57Well, check this.
01:05:59The Blitzen was passing by the south coast of England on the 4th of October.
01:06:04Thousands of miles from the Caribbean.
01:06:06So, Ashley recorded that video on a beach back in the UK.
01:06:10Which means she was never even here.
01:06:13Inspector, the airport just emailed over security camera footage the day Ashley Sims arrived on the island.
01:06:21Oh, wait.
01:06:22She was here?
01:06:24Thank you for a wonderful Christmas, Marjorie.
01:06:27Oh, it's been lovely.
01:06:28Let me give you a hand with that.
01:06:30Oh, don't be daft.
01:06:31You don't know where anything goes.
01:06:32Then you can tell me.
01:06:34It's the least I can do.
01:06:36Living room.
01:06:37Living room.
01:06:38Sideboard drawer.
01:06:39Living room.
01:06:40Sideboard drawer.
01:06:44But if Ashley Sims has never been here before, why do immigration records show that she has?
01:06:50Because someone else came pretending to be Ashley, presumably on a fake passport, and that someone paid Darian 100k to
01:06:57lie and say Ashley rented his property for the past few months.
01:07:00But why would they do that?
01:07:02To misdirect and confuse anyone looking for her.
01:07:05Because they'd already killed Ashley and taken the money.
01:07:08So one of our four suspects has been here three months previously?
01:07:11Which is why we're going through this footage, because it will show who was pretending to be Ashley Sims.
01:07:18There.
01:07:19Why didn't I see that before?
01:07:21Why I've come here to try and understand why I hurt people.
01:07:25No, it was more than that.
01:07:26Gavin was obsessed.
01:07:28Of course.
01:07:29After that, nobody is seen leaving or arriving.
01:07:32So it's got to be one of these four who shot Darian and St. George.
01:07:36You were in the hammock when whatever happened, happened.
01:07:39You didn't hear the gunshot?
01:07:40It's like Helen said, you know, the room out here, it's...
01:07:42Stronger than you used to.
01:07:43But what if there was another smell the killer was trying to hide?
01:07:47It makes perfect sense now.
01:07:50For definite, there's no gun at the villa.
01:07:51The commissioner found a gun locked in the desk drawer at Dougdale's offices back in the UK.
01:07:56We need to call the commissioner.
01:07:58The commissioner? Why?
01:07:59Because he's with the killer as we speak.
01:08:14Come on, sir. Pick up.
01:08:20And what about these ones?
01:08:22Same drawer.
01:08:24Ah.
01:08:29I've always wanted to go to the Caribbean.
01:08:49I said the same drawer.
01:08:53No.
01:08:59No.
01:09:00That necklace.
01:09:01The stone is Lithma.
01:09:03Unique to St. Marie.
01:09:05You told me you always wanted to go to the Caribbean like you've never been.
01:09:13You were lying.
01:09:15No.
01:09:16No, Selwyn.
01:09:18I...
01:09:18It was you that went to St. Marie three months ago.
01:09:22If Ashley never went then, is she dead?
01:09:27Oh, I'm sorry.
01:09:29I...
01:09:30I didn't mean to.
01:09:31It...
01:09:31It...
01:09:32It...
01:09:32It...
01:09:32It just happened.
01:09:34Miss Jones.
01:09:37I think...
01:09:40You should put the knife down, though.
01:09:46Please.
01:09:50Oh.
01:09:54That...
01:09:57Video she made.
01:09:58It wasn't in the Caribbean.
01:10:01Was it?
01:10:02Bournemouth.
01:10:05On a Sunday, she'd...
01:10:06She'd gone to the seaside.
01:10:08She realized she'd made a mistake stealing that money.
01:10:12Didn't she?
01:10:14Then she wanted to give the money back
01:10:17and send the video as an apology.
01:10:19I want to say sorry.
01:10:21Don't know why I keep doing this.
01:10:23Miss Simms didn't leave the country.
01:10:28I'd gone in to the office that day to deal with an order that had gone wrong.
01:10:33It wasn't my fault.
01:10:35But I was the one who had to go in and fix it.
01:10:38And then when I let myself in,
01:10:41I found Ashley there and I knew...
01:10:44I knew straight away what the money was.
01:10:46You...
01:10:46You overhear a lot when you sit at reception all day.
01:10:50I knew it was you.
01:10:51And...
01:10:52And I went to call the police.
01:10:54Wait, I'm giving the money back, Marjorie.
01:10:57Don't.
01:10:58Please.
01:10:59Just...
01:11:00I'm calling the police now.
01:11:02Don't do this to me.
01:11:03You're not.
01:11:04And Ashley tried to stop me.
01:11:06I won't let you, Marjorie.
01:11:08Get off me!
01:11:09Pushed her off me and...
01:11:23And I wasn't even supposed to be in that day.
01:11:29But it's like I told you.
01:11:31Nobody...
01:11:31Nobody cares for me there.
01:11:34They just take me for granted and...
01:11:37You saw the money.
01:11:39And thought...
01:11:41Finally...
01:11:42You could take something back for yourself.
01:11:46All you had to do was dispose of the body.
01:11:53Where?
01:11:59In my back garden.
01:12:06And then you made a fake passport in Ashley's name.
01:12:10Oh, that wasn't hard, you know, with all the kit we've got in the office.
01:12:14You flew on that passport to St. Marie.
01:12:17To make it look as if Miss Simms had run away to the other side of the world and rented
01:12:24her property there for the last few months.
01:12:28You know, I really did want to go to the Caribbean.
01:12:32It's just that I never had the chance...
01:12:36Or the money...
01:12:37Until...
01:12:39And if you were going to misdirect from what really happened here...
01:12:43In Swindon...
01:12:44Where the dead body was...
01:12:47Then...
01:12:47The farther away...
01:12:49The better.
01:12:50And no one would realize...
01:12:58Until...
01:12:58Things started to go wrong.
01:13:01And you received a phone call.
01:13:10You're saying Marjorie killed Ashley Simms?
01:13:14Our receptionist, that Marjorie?
01:13:16That Marjorie.
01:13:17Yes, Marjorie Dodds, the receptionist, killed Ashley Simms in England and made it look as if she ran away to
01:13:23the Caribbean.
01:13:24With your 500k.
01:13:25Oh, my.
01:13:26I did not see that coming.
01:13:28So, which one of us shot the man found in our swimming pool?
01:13:32It wasn't any of you.
01:13:34But it had to be. You said so. No one else was here.
01:13:37Yeah, you're right. I did say that.
01:13:39But what I didn't know then was that Darien St. Jules wasn't shot at your villa.
01:13:44It just looked like he was.
01:13:46That's why no gunshot was heard because there wasn't one.
01:13:50He'd already been shot.
01:13:56We know now from our colleague in the UK that Marjorie had paid Darien money.
01:14:01She came to the island three months ago on a forged passport and she gave him £100,000 to lie
01:14:08and cover if anyone ever came to the island asking after Ashley.
01:14:12She'd convinced him he was doing a favour for a very vulnerable friend of hers.
01:14:17But when you visited him a few days ago, Mrs. Dogdale, asking questions, mentioning the missing £500,000,
01:14:24Darien started to wonder what he got himself involved in.
01:14:28And when he re-watched that footage more closely, the footage of Ashley you'd shown him as an experienced fisherman
01:14:34who knew the waters of St. Marie very well, something about it bothered him.
01:14:39Zooming in, he was able to read the name of the boat Blitzen. He knew this was not a St.
01:14:44Marie vessel.
01:14:46He worked out that the video of Ashley was actually shot in the UK.
01:14:52And having heard from you, Mrs. Dogdale, that Ashley went missing with £500,000 of your money,
01:14:59Darien started to realise that Ashley had never been to the island. He'd only ever met Marjorie.
01:15:04So he phoned Miss Dodds asking what was going on.
01:15:13We need to talk.
01:15:14Listen, Darien, you've got this all wrong.
01:15:19All throughout this case, we thought Darien's killer had to be one of you four.
01:15:24The one person we never suspected was Marjorie Dodds.
01:15:28It was all the way back in Swindon. Or so we thought.
01:15:31With Darien threatening to go to the police, Marjorie asked him to hang fire.
01:15:36And she would fly out here and speak to him in person.
01:15:40Marjorie was here?
01:15:41On this island?
01:15:41At the exact same time we were?
01:15:43Yeah. She arrived the night before Darien was shot and flew back to the UK the next morning.
01:15:49Unable to convince Darien to keep quiet and carry on with the lie, Marjorie started to grow desperate.
01:15:55Worried he'd tell the police.
01:15:56I can give you more money. How much? Just tell me and I'll give it to you.
01:16:01We know. Darien was searching around for a gun. For self-protection.
01:16:06I just want you to leave. Now!
01:16:10He never expected Marjorie would use it against him.
01:16:18What are you doing? Put the gun down!
01:16:25After shooting Darien, Marjorie left and headed for the airport.
01:16:29Before getting back on the plane, arriving at Dugdale's offices just in time to meet with our very own Commissioner
01:16:34Patterson.
01:16:36If Marjorie shot Darien at his house, how did he end up at our villa?
01:16:41Marjorie thought she'd killed him. But what she didn't know when she left Darien's place was that he was still
01:16:47alive.
01:16:51It was the fact that he smelled so strongly of someone else's aftershave they helped us work it out.
01:16:56Neil's aftershave, in fact.
01:16:58We thought it was there to cover up another smell that we now know was antiseptic.
01:17:05The stuff used to clean up a wound.
01:17:07Because as soon as Marjorie quit the scene, Darien regained consciousness and patched himself up.
01:17:12As far as he was concerned, the bullet was just lodged in his shoulder.
01:17:15It wasn't life-threatening. So he put on a fresh T-shirt and headed off to the hospital to get
01:17:21it properly seen to.
01:17:23But on the way, it passed your villa, which was just half a mile down the road.
01:17:28And I think Darien intended to alert you to what had gone down.
01:17:32He stopped here to tell you the truth about Ashley and to warn you about what Marjorie had done.
01:17:37That's why he came here that morning.
01:17:40To tell you what your colleague had done to Ashley and in turn to him.
01:17:44To make sure it didn't happen to anyone else.
01:17:48But what Darien didn't know was that his wound was worse than he thought.
01:17:52And he was bleeding internally.
01:17:54And so despite his brave effort to alert you all to the truth, he died.
01:18:00Here in your villa.
01:18:03But then someone proceeded to stage the scene as if he was shot in this villa.
01:18:11Didn't you, Mr Bradbury?
01:18:14Me? What?
01:18:16We told- No, of course not. No.
01:18:18And you did it because Ashley told you to.
01:18:22You're crazy. Ashley?
01:18:24I don't know what you're talking about.
01:18:27Let me have your phone.
01:18:32Gavin, please.
01:18:35It's okay.
01:18:38Unlock it.
01:18:53Bingo.
01:18:54Text messages seemingly from Ashley Sims from the moment she disappeared right up to today.
01:18:59But all of these were sent by Marjorie Dodds.
01:19:05Who kept Ashley's phone after she killed her.
01:19:08You know, you're wrong. She can't be-
01:19:10You've been texting her?
01:19:11No.
01:19:11This whole time?
01:19:12Karen, I'm sorry. Look, look.
01:19:14Karen!
01:19:16And here, proof of what happened.
01:19:19Messages exchanged on the morning of Darien's death.
01:19:21Because despite what you told us, Gavin, you were actually the first to discover Darien's body.
01:19:29You knew who Darien was because Ashley had told you all about him.
01:19:33And so you contacted Ashley, left a message telling her that Darien had turned up to the villa and died,
01:19:39and asking her what was going on.
01:19:42A few minutes later, she, or rather, Marjorie, texted back.
01:19:48See, Marjorie realized that if the police were called and found Darien with his wound patched up,
01:19:54they'd know he was shot somewhere else.
01:19:56And the trail would lead right back to her.
01:20:00So, she had to do two things.
01:20:03First, she texted you with instructions.
01:20:05Second, she had to clear up the real scene of the crime.
01:20:08Marjorie's confessed to her colleague in the UK that she quickly doubled back from the airport
01:20:12and returned to Darien's house before disposing of the gun and the T-shirt he was wearing when she shot
01:20:16him.
01:20:17Meanwhile, you moved the body outside to the swimming pool.
01:20:19There's also a mention here of that bullet you kept as a memento in the text messages you sent to
01:20:25Ashley.
01:20:25Well, that's how Marjorie knew.
01:20:27So, as Ashley, she asked you to remove the bullet she killed Darien with
01:20:32and replace it with the one she knew you had.
01:20:37However, in your haste, you must have dropped the bullet you extracted into the swimming pool.
01:20:44But you knew you could come back and retrieve it later.
01:20:48Once you switched the bullets, the heartbeat was over.
01:20:51You disposed of the dressing.
01:20:55Then made a hole in his T-shirt and let the blood around the wound soak in.
01:21:00So now, it looked like Darien had been shot after he entered the villa, not before.
01:21:06The last problem you had was getting rid of that antiseptic smell.
01:21:10Because that stuff lingers, right?
01:21:12And if the police noticed it, we'd certainly be asking who cleaned up the wound and why.
01:21:17So you ran into the bathroom and got hold of some aftershave, kneels and doused him in it.
01:21:22So now all you had to do was pretend to be asleep when Mrs. Dogdale discovered the body.
01:21:28Gavin, we need to get to the airport. You've got to pack.
01:21:32Leaving us without a Scooby as to how a man was shot with a gun that was locked in a
01:21:36desk drawer 5,000 miles away in a Swindon warehouse.
01:21:40In the end, it wasn't just the police that Marjorie Dodds had duped.
01:21:44It was you as well, Gavin.
01:21:45You see, you thought you were helping the woman you loved.
01:21:49A woman you'd do anything for when you were actually helping her killer.
01:22:01Officer Rose.
01:22:11Mr. Bradbury, I'm arresting on the suspicion of perverting the course of justice.
01:22:15You don't need to say anything.
01:22:16But it may harm your defence if you do not mention one question something you later rely on in court.
01:22:21Anything you do say may be used as evidence.
01:22:23I need to know.
01:22:25Why did you come to the train station that night and invite me into your home?
01:22:31Why take that risk?
01:22:34Because I didn't want to spend Christmas on my own again.
01:22:43I'm so sorry I spoiled it all.
01:22:58Inspector?
01:23:00Commissioner?
01:23:01The arrest has been made. I'm pleased to see.
01:23:04Same here. We couldn't have done it without you, sir.
01:23:08Oh, and are you doing all right?
01:23:10Me?
01:23:11Yes, of course. I'm fine.
01:23:14Merry Christmas, sir.
01:23:21I'm doing fine.
01:23:25We regret to announce that the 10-15 to Leeds will be delayed due to a shortage of train staff.
01:23:40Chief Commissioner, it's Selwyn Patterson.
01:23:45And to you, and apologies for calling you during the holidays.
01:23:51But I wanted to know if you'd found my replacement as yet.
01:24:01I see. I've been doing some thinking.
01:24:05And I wondered if there was any chance of my returning to the road.
01:24:13If it's still vacant.
01:24:16I know it's been a long time since I've been searching.
01:24:24Since I've been searching to find you.
01:24:29The thing is, Harry, the classic Christmas Day Sunday roast lunch is all well and good.
01:24:35But when push comes to shove, the real culinary high point is the turkey and stuffing sarni.
01:24:42Because my friend, in my humble opinion, it is one of the greatest delicacies known to mankind.
01:24:52Like bacon and eggs?
01:24:54Oh, D.S. Thomas, you're just in time. Come in, come in.
01:24:59Grab those for me, would you?
01:25:00Yeah.
01:25:04So, uh, what is this about, sir?
01:25:08I promised I'd make up for spoiling Christmas Day.
01:25:11And that is exactly what I'm doing.
01:25:13Come on.
01:25:18I don't know why I didn't think of this before.
01:25:20My front room on the beach.
01:25:22Is that a good idea, do you think?
01:25:24Yeah, why not?
01:25:25So we're watching something.
01:25:27We certainly are, D.S. Thomas.
01:25:29And not the...
01:25:29The great escape. Yeah.
01:25:34Beers and butties, everyone.
01:25:37And thank you to our local mayor for letting me have the leftovers from the bar.
01:25:42And you've put it all between two slices of bread?
01:25:46Yeah.
01:25:47How English.
01:25:49Excited for this film, Inspector. Sans dope.
01:25:53Um...
01:25:54Sir.
01:25:57Is this really your favourite thing about Christmas?
01:26:01Well, yeah.
01:26:02When I was a little boy growing up,
01:26:05most times I didn't know where I was going to end up spending Christmas, right?
01:26:10With a foster family or in a care home.
01:26:15But wherever I ended up, the one constant every Christmas was his film.
01:26:21And it was a...
01:26:22It was a comfort to me.
01:26:24I bet that little boy never thought he'd be here in the Caribbean.
01:26:30All these years later, watching that same film surrounded by his friends.
01:26:43He certainly didn't care for him.
01:26:47So, um...
01:26:49To him.
01:26:51To him.
01:26:53Hmm.
01:26:54Okay, then. Showtime.
01:26:56Yeah.
01:26:56Yeah.
01:27:07Um...
01:27:07Look, er...
01:27:08Just give me a few minutes, yeah?
01:27:11Yeah?
01:27:18Solomon, how you doing, man?
01:27:21You got my message, yeah?
01:27:23Um, look...
01:27:26I'm sorry I had to cut you off like that before, yeah?
01:27:29It was just an emergency at work I had to deal with.
01:27:32So...
01:27:33How's your Christmas been?
01:27:36Yeah?
01:27:37Good.
01:27:41Mine, um...
01:27:43Yeah, yeah, it's been really good.
01:27:48Look, um...
01:27:50I don't know how you feel about this, but...
01:27:54I was wondering if you wanted to meet up sometime.
01:27:59Yeah?
01:28:02Yeah, I definitely would like to.
