00:05:01been researching organ transfer it's timber he's one of the biggest suppliers on the west coast they're
00:05:07big but not well liked this stature without people environmentalists object to their harvesting
00:05:12practices really once again just how large is this company really grateful for mr company successful

00:05:34thank you thank you very much you're all too kind thank you i'll try to make this brief as i know
00:05:46these speeches can be about as effective as any anesthesia it is an honor for me to be here tonight to
00:05:55accept this plaque and to help this community you see many years ago as a young boy growing up i was
00:06:01quite sick i recall those days very well the fear and the loneliness i felt through those very troubled
00:06:08days however through the help and talent of many doctors and very attentive nurses i was able to pull
00:06:14through and go on to lead a very productive and now prosperous life others like myself were also
00:06:20able to get well and leave unfortunately there were those that didn't i have learned over the years that
00:06:29it is just too heartbreaking to dwell on those things that cannot be changed however it is quite
00:06:35uplifting to focus on those things that can i hope this contribution makes a difference and thank you
00:06:42all for the opportunity of repaying a debt long overdue thank you very very much
00:06:48damn well i have to go well this is a rather disappointing end to a pleasant evening shall we get

00:07:09good time maybe a quiet dinner together look doc let me get straight to the point you're an awkward
00:07:15annoying pain in the ass and why don't you go home to your comfy little house and your wrinkled
00:07:19little wife and fuck her instead i'm sure she'd really appreciate it i pegged you for a bimbo but
00:07:26not a cold-hearted bitch well you should have been more observant after all you're the cardiologist

00:08:42did i say something funny no not at all i just really wasn't expecting to be solicited tonight at
00:08:51least not by someone like you however compared to the usual graceless tactless bald-headed men in
00:08:58three-piece suits you're a very welcomed relief so by all means please continue no you're absolutely
00:09:04right it's very rude of me i'm sorry it's your party and you should enjoy it oh no wait please
00:09:11jacqueline don't go i didn't mean to scare you off you are a breath of fresh air and an evening of
00:09:18dignitaries and i would enjoy your company that is unless of course you're not alone no way i'm afraid i am
00:09:24you know what let me do something for you thank you that looks a little sad

00:09:59fault would you please keep your voice down oh i forgot we have to preserve the alcock persona
00:10:06of father benefactor and saint you forced me to come to these damn things just to maintain your image
00:10:12that's enough go home candy it's time for you to leave just sweep it under the rug

00:10:59after the reaction you gave me last time oh look i'm sorry about that i didn't mean anything by it it's
00:11:05just that i get approached by a lot of people and you caught me completely off guard i know i i must
00:11:11admit that's the reason i came here in the first place but after meeting you i've decided i'd rather
00:11:18get to know the real benjamin alcott instead of being another charity case i don't think i could refer
00:11:24to you as a charity case well i guess i should say thank you
00:11:32maybe we should carry this conversation on elsewhere the cleanup crew's getting a little
00:11:36anxious i you know i know an all-night diner you could hash over some hash browns or get a jump on
00:11:42breakfast i gotta warn you though it's not a very safe part of town don't you worry because i'm gonna
00:11:48protect you oh and who's gonna protect you from me i've been trying for the past 15 years and i
00:11:56still can't seem to do anything right you do this to yourself
00:12:04i guess i have this fantasy that finally realizes how wrong you've been all these years
00:12:09and you're trying to make it up to me somehow
00:12:17it's me
00:12:20hey you gotta think about us instead okay you can't think about him anymore

00:13:45What the heck?
00:14:08You little tramp.
00:14:10Get up.
00:14:11Get up and get that loser boyfriend out of my house.
00:14:15You better be off my property in less than a minute.
00:14:17Otherwise, I will have you arrested for trespassing.
00:14:20Don't scare me, old man.
00:14:22You can't push me around like you do your daughter, Candy.
00:14:24Who the hell do you think you are, Mr. Big Shot?
00:14:28Screwing a girl half your age.
00:14:30You don't think I know what you're up to around here loving that meal ticket?
00:14:33I've seen your kind around here before.
00:14:35Yeah, like in the mirror, right?
00:14:37What the hell are you talking about?
00:14:38You heard me.
00:14:39I'm not good enough for your daughter, Candy, but you were good enough for her rich mom.
00:14:44Candy is a magnet for scum like you.
00:14:47Believe me, there's not going to be any payoff for you around here.
00:14:50There was for you, wasn't there?
00:14:51See, if Candy's mom hadn't been killed.
00:14:53Oh, excuse me, I'm sorry.
00:14:55Died.
00:14:56Then none of this will be yours, would it?
00:14:58Get the hell out of my house.
00:15:01I love Candy.
00:15:02I don't care what you think.
00:15:04Oh, that is just really touching.
00:15:06And you're stupid enough to believe him.
00:15:09Hey, she's not stupid!
00:15:10Hey, get out of here now or I will call the police.
00:15:16Go ahead and call the police.
00:15:17I'll call her later, baby.
00:15:38Okay.
00:15:38You are a foolish girl, Candace.
00:15:56Foolish and ignorant.
00:15:57Stop treating me like a child.
00:15:59You are a child.
00:16:00And until such time that you start making some adult choices, I will treat you as such.
00:16:06From now on, I forbid you ever to see that boy again.
00:16:09That trash is never to set foot in my house.
00:16:12Do I make myself clear?
00:16:14Look, I can throw you out just as easily as I threw him.
00:16:17Throw me out of my mother's house?
00:16:18This is my house.
00:16:20Remember, I inherited the property, the death, the business, and of course you.
00:16:24And you've been nothing but a rebellious little tramp ever since.
00:16:27I was only three when you killed mother.
00:16:30It was an accident.
00:16:31You were the one who was driving.
00:16:33You were the one who drove off the road.
00:16:35Oh, for Christ's sakes, it always comes back down to this, doesn't it?
00:16:38You blame me.
00:16:39Who else is there?
00:16:41Why couldn't that have been you instead?
00:16:43You know, I really have no more patience for this.
00:16:45You are just really sick.
00:16:47I'm glad your mother's not here to see any of this.
00:16:51Stop crying like a baby.
00:16:53You want me to pretend everything is all right when it's not?
00:16:56All you want is a pacifier to make everything okay.
00:16:59I was a child and my mother was gone.
00:17:02I just wanted to be somebody's daughter.
00:17:04I was a child and my mother.
00:17:12Hi, Jackie.
00:17:14It's Ben Alcott.
00:17:15Oh, hi, Ben.
00:17:16How are you?
00:17:18Good.
00:17:19Eight o'clock's fine.
00:17:21Sure, I can drive myself.
00:17:24Oh, you're so sweet.
00:17:26Don't be silly.
00:17:27I'm perfectly capable of driving myself.
00:17:31Okay.
00:17:32I'll see you then.
00:17:34Bye.
00:17:37I'm perfectly capable.
00:17:42I'm perfect.
00:17:46I am.
00:17:50Here's to the love of mankind and helping those less fortunate than us.
00:17:55To the less fortunate.
00:17:56You have a beautiful home, Benjamin.
00:18:00Thank you very much.
00:18:01I can't take all the credit for it.
00:18:03I had lots of help.
00:18:04Have you lived here long?
00:18:05Oh, about 25 years.
00:18:07I was the original developer.
00:18:10I thought timber was your business.
00:18:12The businessman who adapts will always find success.
00:18:16My late wife is a very good example.
00:18:18She did these drawings here.
00:18:20Beautiful, aren't they?
00:18:21They're lovely.
00:18:23She was very talented.
00:18:24She used her artistic skills to do corporate logos.
00:18:27She adapted.
00:18:37I had the most wonderful time the other night.
00:18:41So did I, Ben?
00:18:42You have to let me know more about you.
00:18:44I did all the talking the other night.
00:18:45Tonight I want you to have the mic.
00:18:47But your life is so much more interesting.
00:18:50Mine's pretty standard, really.
00:18:52No, no, no.
00:18:53I want to know more about you.
00:18:55Okay.
00:18:56Fair enough.
00:18:58Let's see.
00:18:59Where should I begin?
00:19:01Well, I'm originally from the Midwest.
00:19:04A little farming community called Platmouth.
00:19:06Just south of Omaha.
00:19:08We were comfortable.
00:19:09Not wealthy.
00:19:10My father owned a good-sized farm back then.
00:19:13Fortunately, I had a charmed childhood.
00:19:14My mother was an especially great role model.
00:19:17She basically taught me everything I know.
00:19:19So when father died, mother sold the farm and moved to Portugal.
00:19:23And I came out to L.A. where, I guess you could say, I heard my calling.
00:19:28And I decided I wanted to help people.
00:19:32So I did a fair amount of charity work.
00:19:34And then I started Rise Up.
00:19:36And you're doing well so far.
00:19:37Well, you know, we have our difficulties, but it'll make me a little progress.
00:19:45So how would you like a brandy in the living room?
00:19:50I'd like her.
00:19:50It was unbelievable traffic.
00:19:57So I figured the streets are so irregular in Hong Kong that I can cross it quicker on foot.
00:20:02Right.
00:20:02So I grab all the software, I hop out of the limousine, and I start running.
00:20:06Turns out, I arrive at the meeting ten minutes early, and the competition completely misses the entire thing.
00:20:12Oh, my God.
00:20:13Well, you're a remarkable man, Mr. Alcott.
00:20:16Thank you very much.
00:20:18Let me ask you something.
00:20:19Yeah.
00:20:19When...
00:20:19Candace, I'm glad you came home.
00:20:23I'd like you to meet somebody.
00:20:25Jacqueline Knight, my stepdaughter Candace.
00:20:27Nice to meet you.
00:20:30I'm sorry about your dress.
00:20:32I hope it came out okay.
00:20:33Funny, you didn't seem sorry at the time.
00:20:35Candace.
00:20:36Oh, I'm sorry, Dad.
00:20:37Is she one of the girlfriends I'm supposed to be nice to?
00:20:39Nice to meet you, Kathleen.
00:20:41I'll leave you two alone.
00:20:41Candace, come back here and apologize to Jacqueline.
00:20:44It's okay.
00:20:46All right, I'm so sorry about that.
00:20:48Let's not let that spoil our evening, right?
00:20:51You're right.
00:20:52Want to pick up where we left off?
00:20:53Of course.
00:20:54What is...
00:21:06What is...
00:21:37I haven't felt this way in years.
00:21:40It's been incredible for me too, Ben. I didn't know I could be this happy.
00:21:44Look, Jackie, there's something I'd like to ask you.
00:21:48I've been giving an awful lot of thought and...
00:21:52What is it?
00:21:54I realize we haven't known each other a long time, but you have completely changed my life.
00:22:00I can't even imagine it without you.
00:22:02Well, I'm trying...
00:22:07Would you please marry me?
00:22:11Well...
00:22:12Ben, I'd be happy to be Mrs. Benjamin Alcott.
00:22:23Oh, Ben, it's beautiful.
00:22:30So are you.
00:22:31They're gonna get married.
00:22:48With that lady?
00:22:50Yeah.
00:22:51I mean, I can't believe that son of a bitch would do something like this.
00:22:53He's only known her a couple of months.
00:22:57Don't tell me.
00:22:59They're in love?
00:23:00I don't know.
00:23:02I don't really care, either.
00:23:04Well, that's definitely gonna affect your future.
00:23:06What?
00:23:07Another wicked step-parent?
00:23:08Well, think about it.
00:23:22Yeah.
00:23:25I mean, she's gonna be his wife.
00:23:27And then when he's gone, she's gonna get half of your inheritance.
00:23:33That's the money that you deserved your whole life.
00:23:37And then you're gonna have to share your money with that bitch.
00:23:43So, Steve, what are we gonna do?
00:23:44Oh, Ben, this traffic's gonna make us late.
00:23:49Oh, I don't think we have anything to worry about.
00:23:51After all, I'm the one writing the check.
00:23:55Yes, you are.
00:23:56How many charities are you involved with right now?
00:23:58Too many.
00:23:59You know, I do it just for good business appearance.
00:24:02As you know, logging's not a very popular industry,
00:24:04so I try to balance the negative publicity with some very positive paid PR.
00:24:09Oh, Ben.
00:24:11What about all that stuff you said at the Parkview benefit?
00:24:13Well, let's just say my secretary writes a very good speech.
00:24:17Frankly, I don't have time for all the details of giving.
00:24:21Wow.
00:24:22I'm not marrying the saint I thought I was.
00:24:25Listen, if it's such a burden to you,
00:24:27why don't you let me handle the foundation?
00:24:30With my experience,
00:24:31it's just a natural extension of what I'm doing already.
00:24:42Yes, hi.
00:24:42This is Ben Alcott.
00:24:43Give me William Stone, please.
00:24:47Hi, Bill.
00:24:48It's Ben.
00:24:49Good.
00:24:49Thanks.
00:24:50Look, from now on,
00:24:51my fiancée, Jacqueline Knight,
00:24:53is going to handle all my duties with the charity.
00:24:56Yes, thank you.
00:24:57Two weeks from now,
00:24:58and of course you're invited.
00:25:00Why don't I have Jacqueline come down tomorrow
00:25:02and meet you to sign all the necessary papers?
00:25:06Very good, Bill.
00:25:07Well, thank you.
00:25:10You'll thank me.
00:25:10Oh, honey, you're getting me all wet.
00:25:28I'm just watering my flower.
00:25:32You know what?
00:25:32These wedding plans are driving me crazy.
00:25:34Why don't we just go to Las Vegas?
00:25:36What?
00:25:37I thought you women lived for all that stuff.
00:25:39Anyway, we have to get to the lawyers
00:25:41to establish the prenuptial.
00:25:42You never mentioned that to me before, Ben.
00:25:47Ha, Jackie, I do silly things,
00:25:49but I'm nobody's fool.
00:25:52I know you're not a fool, Ben.
00:25:55I just didn't think you were that mistrusting.
00:25:58After all, I am going to be your wife.
00:26:01Oh, come on, Jackie.
00:26:02Let's not make a big issue of it, okay?
00:26:05The important thing is we're going to be married.
00:26:08I don't have a problem with it, Ben.
00:26:10Just wish you'd told me sooner, that's all.
00:26:12I know, I know, I know.
00:26:13I am sorry.
00:26:14So what do you still have left to do for the wedding?
00:26:17Oh, everything.
00:26:19This has become such a production.
00:26:21And you will be the star.
00:26:26Yeah, I'm ready for my close-up, Mr. Alcott.
00:26:30Listen, I'm going to go talk to the caterers, okay?
00:26:33And then I'm going to go to my apartment and pack up.
00:26:39I'll see you tomorrow.
00:26:42It appears that Mr. Alcott suffered a heart attack.
00:27:11While swimming.
00:27:13For a man of his age, he was in pretty good shape.
00:27:17But sometimes these things are completely unpredictable.
00:27:21I'm really sorry about your loss, Mrs. Alcott.
00:27:28Not quite.
00:27:30We weren't married yet.
00:27:37Candy, I'm really sorry about your father.
00:27:40We had known each other for many years and had become good friends.
00:27:43Anyway, his estate was valued at $20 million and most of it had been willed to various charities he'd become active with.
00:27:50And he left Carmen a year's salary.
00:27:53And?
00:27:55And that's all.
00:27:56What about me?
00:27:58Did he leave me anything?
00:27:59He left you his complete library.
00:28:02All of his books.
00:28:04I'm his daughter.
00:28:05Candy, please.
00:28:06I know you're upset.
00:28:07He leaves millions to complete strangers?
00:28:10And I get nothing?
00:28:11How am I supposed to live off of books?
00:28:13Candy, I'm sorry.
00:28:16You know, those books meant a lot to Ben.
00:28:18You think he was born with his skills and talent?
00:28:22I'll just send over the papers I need you to sign.
00:28:25I know you don't want to discuss this now, but we need to make arrangements for your father's funeral.
00:28:31Burn him.
00:28:32Steve, it's Candy.
00:28:37Where are you?
00:28:38I need you right now.
00:28:39Call me as soon as you get this.
00:28:59Liberty for Mr. Ben Alcott.
00:29:02Wedding's off.
00:29:03I don't know where to find her.
00:29:04I don't know where to find her.
00:29:32I don't know where to find her.
00:29:40Los Angeles Mercantile Bank.
00:29:42May I help you?
00:29:43Yes, hi.
00:29:44I wanted to make a donation to a charity that banks with you.
00:29:49It's called Rise Up.
00:29:50I don't really have all the banking information, but a friend had told me that I could just mail it to you.
00:29:58It's called Rise Up?
00:29:59Yes.
00:29:59One moment, please.
00:30:02I'm sorry.
00:30:03I don't show an active account.
00:30:05We did have an account with them, but it was closed on November 6th.
00:30:08Could you please tell me when that account was opened?
00:30:10October 23rd.
00:30:11Of this year?
00:30:12Yes, ma'am.
00:30:13So, the account has been opened less than a month?
00:30:17Yes, ma'am.
00:30:18Are you sure?
00:30:19Positive.
00:30:22Jackie's charity Rise Up didn't even exist until after she and Daddy were dating.
00:30:31So, the solicitation at the gal was all bullshit.
00:30:34Daddy put her in charge of his foundation just two weeks ago.
00:30:43Then Rise Up received a $300,000 donation from it?
00:30:47That's only one day after Jackie was put in charge.
00:30:50So, she used her authority to give herself a big fat bonus, huh?
00:30:55Exactly.
00:30:56Then Rise Up's account was completely drained on November 5th.
00:31:00One day after Daddy died.
00:31:03So, we get totally screwed by your father and she walks off with $300,000.
00:31:10No wonder she left so fast.
00:31:11She has her money, Steve.
00:31:13What are we gonna do?
00:31:15I'm gonna call the cops.
00:31:16No, the police cannot know about this.
00:31:18Otherwise, it's gonna go back to all the stupid charities.
00:31:21Please, fuck!
00:31:22Listen to me!
00:31:23Please!
00:31:24Please!
00:31:24Listen to me.
00:31:26I'm gonna find you, Candy.
00:31:28I'm gonna catch you.
00:31:30All I do, I'm gonna get our money back, okay?
00:31:33All right?
00:31:34What do you want about if you're okay, baby?
00:31:36Huh?
00:31:46It was in Daddy's address book.
00:31:48Well, there's no Jacqueline Knight.
00:31:49Jay Keller matches the initials.
00:31:5214B.
00:31:53I don't know.
00:31:54What do you think?
00:31:55Over here, baby.
00:31:57Come on.
00:31:57Let's check it out.
00:31:58Let's go.
00:31:58All right.
00:32:15Hey!
00:32:17What are you doing?
00:32:18Hey, how you doing?
00:32:20My, um, my ex-girlfriend Jackie lives here, and, uh, she's got a bunch of my stuff inside,
00:32:25you know what I mean?
00:32:26I've been calling her, and she hasn't been answering me.
00:32:28So, you know, I, uh, have you seen her?
00:32:31No, I haven't seen her, and I don't want to either.
00:32:34She's a real bitch.
00:32:36She's always blocking my parking space.
00:32:38I don't know what to do.
00:32:38I mean, you know, I...
00:32:40I ain't seen a thing.
00:32:43I think I've been answering my phone.
00:32:45I think I've been doing this.
00:32:46I can't believe it.
00:32:47I mean, you know, I don't know.
00:32:49I can't believe it's going to be still there.
00:32:50I don't know.
00:32:50I can't believe it.
00:32:51I don't know.
00:32:51I can't believe it.
00:32:52I can just run into it.
00:32:53I don't know.
00:32:53Is there some left of the area?
00:33:23I don't know.
00:33:53I knew it.
00:34:23Good afternoon, Santa Barbara Marina Resort.
00:34:40Who is this?
00:34:41Santa Barbara Marina Resort.
00:34:43Would you like reservations, sir?
00:34:46Yeah, yeah, but give me your address first.
00:35:17I've had this.
00:35:23Are you sure you're even going to be able to recognize Jacqueline?
00:35:25Never even met her.
00:35:27I can't miss a woman like that.
00:35:33Don't worry about it, I told you.
00:35:36Take care of it, all right?
00:35:37Sometimes all I know is ever.
00:35:45Oh, yeah, oh, yeah.
00:35:49Oh, yeah, oh, yeah.
00:35:54Oh, yeah, oh, yeah.
00:35:58Hi.
00:36:07Hi.
00:36:08Hi.
00:36:09I'm supposed to be meeting a friend of mine.
00:36:11Her name is Jacqueline Knight.
00:36:12Could you tell me the room she's in, please?
00:36:14Um, I'm sorry, sir.
00:36:22I don't have anyone registered by that name in this hotel.
00:36:25No, no, Jacqueline Kelly.
00:36:26Um, I'm sorry, sir.
00:36:34I don't have anyone by that name either.
00:36:36Look, this is the Santa Barbara Marina Hotel, right?
00:36:39Now, I know she's here.
00:36:40Maybe she's using her maiden name.
00:36:41So, can you just check all the guests with the first name, Jacqueline, or something?
00:36:44I'm sorry, sir.
00:36:45Even if you had the correct name, we don't give out guest room numbers.
00:36:53Just give me a room for two for one night, please.
00:37:10So, what if she's not here?
00:37:11Well, we still need a place to rest, don't we?
00:37:16Do you really think she would use her real name?
00:37:19Well, I guess we'll find her.
00:37:21We're at a resort.
00:37:24We might as well make the best of it.
00:37:26Have a great day.
00:37:56I'm hoping you can help me. I'm looking for someone.
00:38:18I might have seen her in here.
00:38:22She's a friend of mine. She's going to be a pleasure.
00:38:26It's a piece of work, all right.
00:38:30I saw someone in here who looked a little like her the other night. She was an older gentleman.
00:38:35It's a nice couple of nights, actually.
00:38:37Well, what time is that?
00:38:39Eight or nine o'clock.
00:38:44We'll be back.
00:38:48I'll be here.
00:38:56I'm the gentleman over at the bar.
00:39:03Excuse me.
00:39:05Hi.
00:39:07I, uh, I really don't normally do this.
00:39:10I know women hate it.
00:39:12But I, uh, was sitting over at the bar and I couldn't help but notice that you have the most beautiful eyes that I've ever seen in my entire life.
00:39:21Get it. I said it. See you later.
00:39:27Wait a second.
00:39:29What's your name?
00:39:31Dan.
00:39:33Dan. Thank you, Dan.
00:39:34You're welcome.
00:39:36You want to sit down?
00:39:37You have nice eyes, too.
00:39:39So, what do you do?
00:39:47I am a marketing efficiency consultant for pharmaceutical companies.
00:39:51Ah.
00:39:52Drug dealer.
00:39:54Interesting.
00:39:55Sort of.
00:39:56Listen, are you hungry?
00:39:57I was just about ready to sit down and have some dinner and I would love you, Charlie.
00:40:02Why not?
00:40:03So, this was September in New Orleans, right?
00:40:06The hurricanes do.
00:40:07We take off anyway.
00:40:08All of a sudden, about 20 minutes into the flight, the plane starts shaking, right?
00:40:12And this pilot comes on the intercom and says,
00:40:14Don't need to be alarmed, folks.
00:40:15This is only turbulence.
00:40:17All of a sudden, you hear a bang!
00:40:18This loud noise outside in the window.
00:40:19I see these two engines burning up on fire.
00:40:22This plane goes into a nosedive.
00:40:23And there's books and plates and drinks flying all over the cabin.
00:40:26I said to myself, you know,
00:40:28Here it comes.
00:40:28This is it.
00:40:29I'm going to die in a great ball of fire.
00:40:32You must have been terrified.
00:40:34You know what the funny thing is?
00:40:35Nobody screamed.
00:40:36Nobody screamed.
00:40:37All you can hear is the roar of the engines in the background.
00:40:41The plane pulls out of it.
00:40:43People start freaking out.
00:40:46I mean, it scared the hell out of me.
00:40:48Well, I, for one, am glad you survived.
00:40:51Me too.
00:40:52You know, I've always been kind of a lucky guy.
00:40:54Listen, would you mind walking me to my room?
00:40:56Uh, I'm sorry, Mr. Gantz.
00:40:57Uh, my computer isn't accepting your credit card.
00:40:59Oh, just wanted to, yeah.
00:41:01I've already tried it three times.
00:41:03It's embarrassing.
00:41:06The card should work.
00:41:07I'll just charge it to my hotel room.
00:41:10I'm sorry, sir.
00:41:11We're a different company than the hotel.
00:41:13You know what?
00:41:13I'm going to turn in, Dan.
00:41:14I'll see you around the hotel.
00:41:15I'm going to turn around the hotel room.
00:41:17I'll see you around the hotel room.

00:49:54Oh, my God, Steve, we're going to go to prison.
00:50:06We're not going to go to jail, Candy.
00:50:08You just killed somebody.
00:50:10Well, I didn't mean to.
00:50:12Look, I think we pulled it off, all right?
00:50:15All we need to do now is we need to think
00:50:17about how we're going to get Jack with money.
00:50:19I can't believe you're talking like this.
00:50:20Somewhere that dead man has a family.
00:50:22If you feel that guilty, we can give the police a call
00:50:25after we live town, all right?
00:50:27Now, unless you want to live the rest of your life
00:50:29in a trailer park, I suggest we go back to the hotel
00:50:31and we finish what we started.
00:50:33What are we going to do, Steve?
00:50:34Your dance charm isn't exactly working.
00:50:35No wonders you said it would.
00:50:36We're just going to have to keep trying, okay?
00:50:38We're just going to have to try something else.
00:50:43Trust me.
00:50:50Room 319, please.
00:50:52I'm sorry, ma'am.
00:50:53That room is empty.
00:50:54Mr. Klein checked out this morning.
00:51:08Hey, Deborah.
00:51:10Deborah, how are you doing?
00:51:12It's me, Dan Gantz, remember?
00:51:14Well, how could I forget?
00:51:17You look great tonight.
00:51:19Look, Mr. Richard or Gantz, whatever your name is,
00:51:24I don't really feel like having company tonight,
00:51:26so why don't you just leave me alone, all right?
00:51:29Listen, you know, I would leave you alone,
00:51:31but I would just like the opportunity to make this up to you
00:51:33because I have to apologize for the other night.
00:51:35It was, uh...
00:51:36I don't think so.
00:51:38Look, I just want to buy you dinner.
00:51:39Maybe you can, you know, just relax.
00:51:41Look, pal, you're not my type,
00:51:43so why don't you go back where you came from, all right?
00:51:46You know, Deb, I think you're getting a little bit obnoxious yourself
00:51:48because I...
00:51:49You heard the lady.
00:51:54Look, old man, why don't you, uh,
00:51:56go back to your table right now.
00:51:57Yeah, man, if you continue your obnoxious behavior,
00:52:00the bouncer is going to break you like a toothpick
00:52:01and throw you out on your ass.
00:52:04Why not spare yourself the embarrassment
00:52:05and leave, now.
00:52:14Fuck you.
00:52:16And you too, bitch.
00:52:19Well, thank you very much.
00:52:22My name's Deborah.
00:52:23Henry Mackleau.
00:52:24My pleasure, Deborah.
00:52:38Pardon me, Mr. Maxwell.
00:52:40Do you mind if I join you?
00:52:42Didn't I overhear you say you want to be by yourself tonight?
00:52:45Yes, but that was before I was rescued
00:52:47by a knight in shiny armor.
00:52:50I'd love your company, Deborah.
00:52:51But I got to warn you up front.
00:52:58I'm a married man.
00:52:59Oh, what did you think I was going to do?
00:53:02I just want to buy you a drink.
00:53:05I'd love a drink.
00:53:07Beauty has two edges.
00:53:10One of laughter, one of anguish.
00:53:12Shakespeare?
00:53:13Virginia Woolf.
00:53:16What are you having?
00:53:18Scotch and water.
00:53:19I'll have the same.
00:53:19You got it.
00:53:20So, Deborah, what's your business here in Santa Barbara?
00:53:23Um, I was recovering from a bad situation.
00:53:27It was almost working, too.
00:53:29What about you, Mr. Maxwell?
00:53:31Please, call me Henry.
00:53:33Pels, I come here once a year from Texas.
00:53:35Stay about a month.
00:53:36Oh, a Texas man, huh?
00:53:38What's your business?
00:53:39If I tell you what I do, you'd think it's boring.
00:53:42Well, try me.
00:53:43I'm an investment banker.
00:53:47You're right.
00:53:47That's boring.
00:53:49I'm just kidding.
00:53:50I mean, it's great for you.
00:53:51How many Texans get to spend their winters in Santa Barbara?
00:53:54Yeah, I'm lucky I know it.
00:53:57I'm just a little disappointed my family couldn't make it this time.
00:53:59Why not?
00:54:00My kids are all grown.
00:54:01They're living their own life.
00:54:03My wife's on a cruise in the Bahamas.
00:54:05She hates California.
00:54:06Oh, what a shame.
00:54:09Yeah, it is.
00:54:10I wish you liked it.
00:54:12Four weeks can get a little lonely by yourself.
00:54:15Yeah.
00:54:17Well, you know, I think I'm about ready to turn in.
00:54:19It's a pleasure to meet you, Deborah.
00:54:21It was a pleasure meeting you.
00:54:23And thanks again for saving me.
00:54:26You know, if you haven't made plans for tomorrow night,
00:54:28would you be interested in having dinner together?
00:54:30I'd like that.
00:54:31Good.
00:54:33Why don't we meet in the lobby around 7?
00:54:357 it is.
00:54:37I'll see you there.
00:54:38Good night.
00:54:39Good night.
00:54:39Good night.
00:55:05Nice job, Steve.
00:55:17Hoping you didn't get roughed up too much.
00:55:20Perfect.
00:55:20It is.
00:55:22I said they have dinner tomorrow night.
00:55:247 o'clock.
00:55:25Ow!
00:55:28You're the man!
00:55:29Candy, I want you to be the man to tell me everything I know.
00:55:31Well, not everything I know, but this is Max Delaney.
00:55:34Max, this is Candy.
00:55:35My pleasure, Candy.
00:55:38Thanks for helping us out.
00:55:40Oh, that's enough.
00:55:41That's enough.
00:55:42Go on to that, huh?
00:55:44Thanks.
00:55:44So, tell me about the money situation.
00:55:49Well, we figured that Jacqueline made off with about $100,000 of Candy's father's money.
00:55:57But since the money's stolen, we figured she must be carrying it around with her unless she's, you know, stashed it close by.
00:56:02Well, if I find it, I'm taking half.
00:56:04Like hell, you're taking a third like we agreed.
00:56:06You ain't changed, Steve.
00:56:11I'm just riding you.
00:56:13I like watching you get pissed off.
00:56:16Don't worry.
00:56:17If it's in Santa Barbara, I'll find it.
00:56:21You two better get some rest.
00:56:23You know, it looks so good.
00:56:31Good night.
00:56:31Good night.
00:56:32Good night.
00:56:36Jesus, Steve, are you sure we can trust him?
00:56:40Well, baby, we have to.
00:56:41It's the best chance we got.
00:56:43Come on, you know, Max has been like a father to me.
00:56:46You know, you give him my first beer, for Christ's sake.
00:56:49Well, he's smooth.
00:56:51I hope you know what you're doing.
00:56:53If anybody can count the cons, Max.
00:56:58Now, don't worry, okay?
00:57:00Max's a good guy.
00:57:03Trust me.
00:57:05Trust me.
00:57:05Trust me.
00:57:07Trust me.
00:57:07Trust me.
00:57:08Trust me.
00:57:10No.
00:57:11No.
00:57:27No.
00:57:28No.
00:57:29No.
00:57:32No.
00:57:33Oh, my God.
00:58:03Yeah, well, we searched the damn car in the entire room, Max, and we found nothing.
00:58:07Okay?
00:58:07I'm getting a little pissed off here, and this fucking heat doesn't help things.
00:58:11No, Max, I don't have any patience.
00:58:14Give us some time.
00:58:16She's building trust in me.
00:58:18She'll let her guard down one of these things.
00:58:20We'll get her a product.
00:58:22Well, you know, Max, Candy and I don't have any more money.
00:58:25So we can't finance your little romantic adventures anymore.
00:58:28So just to make a fair way, and put the squeeze on her a bit, okay?
00:58:33Let's see what I can do.
00:58:43What's so funny?
00:58:46Deborah, you have changed my life dramatically.
00:58:50Three weeks ago, I was a faithful husband to a 30-year marriage.
00:58:54And now, look at me.
00:58:55Bullshit, Henry.
00:58:57You think I don't know your plan?
00:58:59I don't know who you are.
00:59:02I knew you were a womanizer the night we met.
00:59:04You're such a good one.
00:59:06That's why I like you so much.
00:59:07Deborah.
00:59:07Am I wrong?
00:59:11So maybe you have a wife at home.
00:59:14If you think I'm going to believe I'm the first woman you've fooled around with since you've been married,
00:59:18you've been spending way too much time in the sun.
00:59:21Deborah, I've got to hand it to you.
00:59:23I've been had.
00:59:24Give me a minute to rebuild my eco.
00:59:26Don't pout, Henry.
00:59:29Whatever you have at home isn't going to affect us here.
00:59:36I'd have to go to New York for the weekend before I return to Texas.
00:59:39I'm not ready to say goodbye.
00:59:41Come with me.
00:59:43We'll stay at a top-notch place in the city.
00:59:46You can relax.
00:59:46Do what you want to during the day.
00:59:48Just say the night's for me.
00:59:49You know, I make it up in New York quite often.
00:59:52Perhaps we can meet there on a regular basis.
00:59:57You're asking me to be your mistress.
01:00:03Why not?
01:00:05When do we leave?
01:00:06Tonight.
01:00:07Oh, I can't.
01:00:08Why?
01:00:09Well, I've got things to take care of here.
01:00:12So the telephone's up for them, my dear.
01:00:15I really have to do this in person.
01:00:17Okay, how's the end can you leave?
01:00:20How's tomorrow morning?
01:00:22Tell me what I can do to help you and I'll do it.
01:00:23You know what?
01:00:24Just give me a little space, okay, sweetie?
01:00:26I have a lot to think about.
01:00:44How's the hotel?
01:00:46Stay at the gas frame, please.
01:00:47How's the hotel now?
01:00:49Hello?
01:00:49Yeah.
01:00:50We're set.
01:00:54Can I ask you something?
01:00:57Is it a baby anything?
01:00:58You know that?
01:01:00As you meet Henry.
01:01:07Henry took me in when I was a kid.
01:01:11Kept me home when I needed it most.
01:01:13Yeah, but how exactly?
01:01:20It's a long story, baby.
01:01:24I think when I have more conditions.
01:01:26Jesus.
01:01:45How much is it?
01:01:47I'm sorry.
01:01:49Let's go.
01:03:21It's got to be the money, Max.
01:03:23Who else could you put in there, huh?
01:03:25Who needs the key?
01:03:27I saw it put in the purse.
01:03:30I'm not saying the money's not in there.
01:03:32There's probably more.
01:03:34We saw her from now, she'll know somebody's on her if she just disappeared.
01:03:37Yeah, well, that's good.
01:03:39Because once I get my money, I don't care where she goes.
01:03:40Oh, see, that's bad.
01:03:43You ever watch this make a deal?
01:03:45I mean, you can take what's in the box and walk away.
01:03:47Or you can get in with a box that's high in curtain number two.
01:03:51If that suitcase hasn't got the money, you're going to be double screwed.
01:03:54If you don't have a sentence, you'll be gone.
01:03:55Yeah?
01:03:57Take us behind the box, Bonnie.
01:04:03Where have you been?
01:04:05I had some calls to make.
01:04:07Candy, baby.
01:04:09You gotta let me know where you're going.
01:04:10I was worried about you.
01:04:11Oh, yeah, I can tell by the way you're basking in the pool.
01:04:15Daddy's ashes were scattered today.
01:04:17Is that okay with you, or did you want to approve it first?
01:04:27I'm sorry.
01:04:30I didn't know.
01:04:32We're not done here.
01:04:33Yeah, we are, Max.
01:04:34We'll just get the key and I'll do the rest.
01:04:36Well, okay, kid, you win.
01:04:38I'll meet you back here at your room.
01:04:40No, we're at 1 a.m.
01:04:411 a.m.
01:04:51Thanks for dinner, Henry.
01:04:53Do you want a nightcap before you go?
01:04:55Ooh, I certainly do.
01:04:57Let me get some ice, all right?
01:04:59I'll be right back.
01:05:10What are you doing?
01:05:26Oh, I got a tremendous headache.
01:05:28I was just going to take a couple of your aspirin's.
01:05:30Those are not aspirin, Henry.
01:05:31Those are sleeping pills.
01:05:32Sorry, I just should have asked first.
01:05:37Yes, you should have.
01:05:38I'm a little picky about my privacy, okay?
01:05:40So if you'd respect that.
01:05:43The aspirin are in the bathroom.
01:05:45I guess I really need a drink.
01:06:06I guess so.
01:06:09Mmm.
01:06:10I think he's a little stronger.
01:06:13Henry!
01:06:13Well, I see him all the way.
01:06:18What's the matter with you?
01:06:21I'm just anxious about New York.
01:06:24I'm sorry.
01:06:24I want to make you happy.
01:06:27You too?
01:06:29Well, then you're forgiven.
01:06:32Here's to New York.
01:06:33To New York.
01:06:34You son of a bitch!
01:06:43It takes five minutes to get here, and he's over an hour late.
01:06:46Look, if you said he's going to be here, he's going to be here.
01:06:54It's not it.
01:06:55He's making suckers out of us, Stephen.
01:06:58What else besides his word would keep him from picking up the money himself and taking off?
01:07:01His word is good.
01:07:03It's a lot of money.
01:07:04It's a lot of money.
01:07:04It's a lot of money.
01:07:04It's a lot of money.
01:07:06It's a lot of money.
01:07:36I don't know.
