00:00:00Good comedy and likability, there's no sell-by date on that sort of thing.
00:00:08What they wrote was timeless because it was authentic.
00:00:13It's the kind of show I wish was on the air right now.
00:00:17Whenever you find it on TV, it makes me stop and every joke is still just as funny.
00:00:22And this murderer's row of a cast.
00:00:25Ray, what's somebody you wanted in your home?
00:00:27You wanted to be part of that family.
00:00:30I believe in 20, 30, 40, 50 more years.
00:00:34We'll still love Everybody Loves Raymond.
00:00:36The writing and the acting, directing, that was near perfect, my God.
00:00:40And it's in color.
00:01:21Don't make me cry.
00:01:43I love you.
00:01:44I love you.
00:01:45Don't make me cry yet.
00:01:46There's going to be a lot of that.
00:01:48Let me just tell you something.
00:01:49The reason we're doing this is because of the fans.
00:01:52I mean, I miss it.
00:01:53I miss everything.
00:01:54I miss you people.
00:01:55I miss the cast.
00:01:57My real wife is backstage with my TV wife.
00:02:00Yes.
00:02:01If you've been married for a long time, folks, you know, there's a lot of ups and downs.
00:02:05And this is an example of how long we've been married.
00:02:08The other day, she actually said to me,
00:02:09you know, you don't talk a lot.
00:02:13But when you do, it's too much.
00:02:19We're going to have a great night.
00:02:20I'm so glad you're here.
00:02:21Who came from, like, far away?
00:02:23Who's from the...
00:02:23Where are you from?
00:02:24Philippines.
00:02:25I watched you when I was, like, seven or eight.
00:02:26In the Philippines?
00:02:28Yes.
00:02:28But, of course, dubbed in...
00:02:30No.
00:02:30I learned English from...
00:02:31You learned English from me.
00:02:38Well, I appreciate it.
00:02:42But thank you very much.
00:02:44Listen, before we go even further,
00:02:46I want to bring out a man who's been my partner in this venture,
00:02:50in this journey for the last 30 years.
00:02:52He's the reason that this show exists.
00:02:56But this was his baby just like it was mine.
00:02:58Please welcome Phil Rosenthal.
00:03:01How great is this?
00:03:15This is amazing.
00:03:16You learned how to speak English from Ray Romano?
00:03:19So were your first English words...
00:03:21Oh, no!
00:03:25First of all, let's get one thing out of the way.
00:03:27This, I'm sure you will know, is a reunion.
00:03:30This is a reunion that we...
00:03:31Not a reboot.
00:03:32We're never going to do one
00:03:33because we're missing three cast members,
00:03:37three family members,
00:03:38so we would never try to do the show without them.
00:03:39It wouldn't be the same.
00:03:40No.
00:03:40And we have too much respect for the show itself
00:03:42and for the beautiful audience...
00:03:44Right.
00:03:45...to keep it the way it is.
00:03:46And thankfully, the show is still on
00:03:49every day all over the world, which...
00:03:52Right.
00:03:52If you want to visit your friends, we're here.
00:03:58How did we meet?
00:04:00Well, I was in bed.
00:04:02And I was watching David Letterman with my wife.
00:04:05This would have been 1995?
00:04:0795.
00:04:07We had a production company
00:04:11and we were always looking for a funny project.
00:04:15And I think we were all pretty greedy when we saw Ray.
00:04:19Our ladies and gentlemen, next guest is a very funny comedian
00:04:21making his first appearance with us tonight.
00:04:24He can also be seen...
00:04:25Wow, I just look like a mid-level mortuary
00:04:28has gotten a hold of me.
00:04:29Do me a favor now, please, a nice welcome for Ray Romano.
00:04:32Ray!
00:04:35My first impression, he's wearing his father's suit.
00:04:38But that's fine.
00:04:39I'm gonna let that go.
00:04:40I have a three-year-old daughter
00:04:42and twin two-year-old boys.
00:04:45Wow!
00:04:49Single people are here.
00:04:52I can make them laugh.
00:04:53I can make an infant laugh in a second.
00:04:55I'll tell you, I'm losing my perspective on adult humor.
00:04:58I wrote one new joke since my twins were born.
00:05:00Here, is this funny?
00:05:01What do you think it is?
00:05:03Hi!
00:05:05Hi, everybody!
00:05:07That rings true with me.
00:05:09I had no idea how to be a parent,
00:05:11so I thought, if I can make the kid laugh,
00:05:13I've done something.
00:05:15I'm glad.
00:05:16I'm glad you laughed.
00:05:16If you didn't laugh at that,
00:05:18I would have had to come and rub my nose in your bellies.
00:05:21Yeah.
00:05:23Ray is the guy
00:05:24and let's go
00:05:26and before he gets in the cab,
00:05:28let's get him to sign something.
00:05:29And I think it was a combination of his likability
00:05:31and the quality of the material.
00:05:34I thought, you know,
00:05:35pretty run-of-the-mill topics,
00:05:37but the quality of the jokes in those topics,
00:05:39I thought were superior.
00:05:41It was just dumb luck
00:05:42that we had anything to do with it.
00:05:43It's like, you know,
00:05:46kids playing with fireworks.
00:05:48Oh, geez, it actually exploded.
00:05:50It was sort of like that.
00:05:58That's why we're here.
00:05:58A week later,
00:06:02they called me
00:06:03and said,
00:06:03we'd like to sign you to a deal
00:06:05to try to produce a sitcom.
00:06:08Right.
00:06:08And then,
00:06:10I had to go find a guy
00:06:11to write it and run it.
00:06:14And...
00:06:14Did you?
00:06:17So,
00:06:18they set us up on a blind date
00:06:19here in L.A.
00:06:20at Arts Deli
00:06:21on Ventura Boulevard
00:06:22and we meet.
00:06:23And I say to Ray,
00:06:25you know,
00:06:25tell me about yourself
00:06:26just like I would with any of you
00:06:27if we were gonna work together
00:06:29but we didn't know each other.
00:06:30So, tell me about yourself.
00:06:31And you said,
00:06:32well, I got twin boys
00:06:33and an older daughter
00:06:34and my parents live close by in Queens.
00:06:36You gotta do the voice?
00:06:37You gotta do the...
00:06:37A little bit.
00:06:38Yeah, okay.
00:06:38And then,
00:06:39my older brother's a police sergeant.
00:06:42He lives with them.
00:06:43He's always touching
00:06:44every bite of food to his gym
00:06:45before he eats it
00:06:46and he's kind of jealous of me.
00:06:47He saw my stand-up comedy award
00:06:49and he said,
00:06:50never ends for Raymond.
00:06:51Everybody loves Raymond.
00:06:53And do you remember what I said?
00:06:55You said,
00:06:56well, I don't think
00:06:57there's anything there.
00:07:01Jokingly.
00:07:02I thought that was
00:07:02a very good place to start.
00:07:04And what I didn't know
00:07:05about the personalities
00:07:06in Ray's family,
00:07:07I filled in
00:07:08with the personalities
00:07:09from my family.
00:07:1090% of everything
00:07:12you saw on the show
00:07:13happened to me
00:07:14or to Ray
00:07:15or to one of the other writers.
00:07:18What are you doing?
00:07:20The show had premiered
00:07:22and Ray said to his wife,
00:07:24Anna,
00:07:25my show just premiered
00:07:27in front of all these people
00:07:28and she said,
00:07:29yeah,
00:07:29and I just cleaned plum
00:07:31off the ceiling
00:07:31from the kids.
00:07:33I think this show
00:07:34means everything to us.
00:07:36It got to capture
00:07:37our family,
00:07:39Ray's family,
00:07:40everybody who worked here,
00:07:42their families.
00:07:43It was just like a community,
00:07:44you know,
00:07:44we became a community.
00:07:45We all felt so safe here
00:07:47and welcomed.
00:07:48I remember my dad would,
00:07:50he'd come out
00:07:50right before the show,
00:07:52he'd greet the audience.
00:07:53He always would bring me up,
00:07:54say hello.
00:07:55He'd do the same joke
00:07:56with the audience
00:07:57about having twins.
00:07:58Like, here's Matt.
00:07:59I have another son.
00:08:01If he was here,
00:08:01it'd look like this
00:08:02and then I'd go behind him
00:08:03and stand on that side.
00:08:05There's one episode
00:08:06based on a real thing
00:08:07that I did,
00:08:07which is when I was
00:08:08in first grade.
00:08:09We all had to write books,
00:08:10you know,
00:08:11little picture books.
00:08:13My book was
00:08:14The Angry Family.
00:08:20All the parents came in
00:08:21to read it
00:08:21and, you know,
00:08:22they were all looking
00:08:23at my parents.
00:08:25Mommy was mad
00:08:26at the daddy.
00:08:30He got an episode
00:08:31out of it.
00:08:32Yeah,
00:08:33the Ray on the show
00:08:34is the Ray at home
00:08:35and that is because
00:08:36at home,
00:08:37he does a lot of annoying things
00:08:39that drive me crazy.
00:08:40I think if I were to do
00:08:41an impression,
00:08:42it's just a little bit
00:08:42deeper,
00:08:43like,
00:08:45grunt,
00:08:45like,
00:08:45I don't know.
00:08:47People do the grunt,
00:08:47right?
00:08:48Ugh.
00:08:48Ah, come on.
00:08:49My back is here.
00:08:51It's a little,
00:08:51ugh.
00:08:52Okay,
00:08:52now it's even worse.
00:08:53Now it's even worse.
00:08:54Who brought the cookies here?
00:08:56Who brought the donuts?
00:08:57All right,
00:08:57I'm just gonna eat one.
00:08:58Oh my God,
00:08:59it's so good.
00:09:00Five minutes later.
00:09:02Ugh,
00:09:02my stomach hurts.
00:09:03Ali,
00:09:03why'd you do that?
00:09:04Oh,
00:09:05damn that.
00:09:06Oh,
00:09:06oh no.
00:09:07It's that raw.
00:09:07Yep,
00:09:08there it went again.
00:09:10I think one of the things
00:09:11that put it over the top
00:09:13where CBS
00:09:14had to decide
00:09:16whether to put us on
00:09:17was something
00:09:18out of your actual life,
00:09:20which was...
00:09:20Well,
00:09:20when I'm writing a pilot,
00:09:21I'm thinking,
00:09:22how do we convey
00:09:23exactly,
00:09:24in a short amount of time,
00:09:26how crazy
00:09:26Ray's parents are?
00:09:28And then this happened to me,
00:09:30where I sent my parents,
00:09:32I thought I was being nice,
00:09:33a gift
00:09:34of Fruit of the Month Club.
00:09:36Look,
00:09:38I appreciate the thought,
00:09:40Raymond,
00:09:40but please,
00:09:41don't ever send us
00:09:41any more food again,
00:09:42okay?
00:09:43Thanks,
00:09:43thanks,
00:09:44Doug.
00:09:44Well,
00:09:45another box is coming
00:09:46next month.
00:09:47What?
00:09:47More pears?
00:09:49No.
00:09:50No,
00:09:50it's a different fruit
00:09:51every month.
00:09:52Every month?
00:09:53Yes,
00:09:54yes,
00:09:54that's why they call it
00:09:55Fruit of the Month Club.
00:09:56It's a club?
00:09:57Oh,
00:09:58my God,
00:09:58what do I have to do
00:09:58with all this fruit?
00:09:59Well,
00:10:00most people like it,
00:10:01Ma,
00:10:01you share it,
00:10:02share it with all your friends.
00:10:03Which friends?
00:10:04I don't know,
00:10:05Lee and Stan.
00:10:05Lee and Stan buy
00:10:06their own fruit.
00:10:08Oh,
00:10:08why did you show this to me?
00:10:10Oh,
00:10:10my God.
00:10:11I can't talk
00:10:12to Stuart Fruit
00:10:13in the house.
00:10:15What do you think
00:10:15we are,
00:10:16invalids?
00:10:17We can't go out
00:10:18and get our own fruit?
00:10:20I try to tell them.
00:10:21All right,
00:10:22I'm canceling the fruit
00:10:23club.
00:10:23Oh,
00:10:24good,
00:10:24thank you,
00:10:25Raymond,
00:10:25thank you.
00:10:26And don't do that again.
00:10:27Like,
00:10:28we don't have enough problems.
00:10:36What I didn't realize
00:10:37and what I learned
00:10:38from doing that,
00:10:39from us doing that,
00:10:41oh,
00:10:41wait,
00:10:42your parents
00:10:42are all crazy,
00:10:43too.
00:10:44Yes.
00:10:45We get it all the time.
00:10:46People from all over
00:10:47parts of the world
00:10:48tell us,
00:10:48that's my mother,
00:10:49that's my father,
00:10:50that's my mother.
00:10:50We didn't know your mother.
00:10:51We were writing our mother.
00:10:52And we have so many
00:10:54favorite episodes,
00:10:54some of the ones
00:10:56we're going to talk
00:10:56about tonight.
00:10:57I have one that just
00:10:58came to mind
00:10:58and it's good
00:10:59since we're starting.
00:11:00You know,
00:11:00we did a flashback episode
00:11:01at the end of every season
00:11:03and this was my favorite
00:11:05because it's how they met,
00:11:07meaning Ray and Debra.
00:11:09You know,
00:11:10it looks like I made
00:11:10too much food here
00:11:11if you're hungry.
00:11:14Oh,
00:11:15yeah?
00:11:16Yeah,
00:11:16you want some?
00:11:17All right,
00:11:18wrap it up.
00:11:18I'll eat it in the truck.
00:11:24Can I ask you something?
00:11:26Yeah,
00:11:26sure.
00:11:28Were you making
00:11:28all that food
00:11:29for someone
00:11:30and they didn't show up?
00:11:33They showed up.
00:11:37Hey,
00:11:37you want something to drink?
00:11:38Yeah,
00:11:38yeah,
00:11:38well,
00:11:39let me get that.
00:11:39Okay,
00:11:39the glasses are right there.
00:11:40Okay.
00:11:41Rice?
00:11:42Yeah.
00:11:42I like the round cubes
00:11:59with the holes in them.
00:12:00Those are my favorite
00:12:01kind of cubes.
00:12:05Are you okay?
00:12:08Yeah,
00:12:08I'm fine.
00:12:09Ah,
00:12:09you all right?
00:12:10Yeah.
00:12:12You're a good kisser.
00:12:18All right,
00:12:18you're in shock.
00:12:23You're both so brave in that
00:12:25and it's just so sweet to me
00:12:26in addition to being funny.
00:12:28The flashback episodes
00:12:29were always...
00:12:30So fun.
00:12:30...fun to do.
00:12:32Look,
00:12:32I like all the episodes
00:12:33but of course there's some
00:12:34we like more than others
00:12:35and I have like a top five
00:12:37and the one off the top
00:12:38of my head
00:12:39is called
00:12:40Talk to Your Daughter.
00:12:41So Talk to Your Daughter
00:12:42is about
00:12:43at some point
00:12:45having to have the talk
00:12:47with your child
00:12:48about the birds
00:12:49and the bees,
00:12:50you know?
00:12:51When a man and a woman
00:12:52love each other very much
00:12:54they get married
00:12:56and then sometimes
00:12:58they decide
00:12:59to make a baby.
00:13:00I know that the man
00:13:02and the woman
00:13:02have to do something
00:13:03but why are we born?
00:13:06Why has God put us here?
00:13:07Why are we here, Daddy?
00:13:25Yeah, I heard you.
00:13:26I heard you.
00:13:29You don't want to talk
00:13:30about sex?
00:13:33What do you mean?
00:13:34Allie didn't want to talk
00:13:34about sex.
00:13:35She started asking
00:13:36questions about life.
00:13:37Why did God put us here?
00:13:38Crazy stuff like that.
00:13:41Wow, so what did you say?
00:13:42I told her we're here
00:13:43because heaven is crowded.
00:13:47You said heaven is crowded?
00:13:49I got ambushed!
00:13:51If you want to know
00:13:52what's in the Bible
00:13:52why don't you talk
00:13:53to Father Hubley?
00:13:54Hey, that's right.
00:13:55You know what?
00:13:56It's his job
00:13:56to know these things.
00:13:58Are you going to call him?
00:13:59Yeah.
00:13:59What are we putting
00:14:00the money in that basket for?
00:14:02Me and the family
00:14:03were just sitting around
00:14:04and we had a quick
00:14:05question for you.
00:14:07What is the meaning of life?
00:14:10So if you could get back
00:14:11to us as soon as possible
00:14:12we'd appreciate it, right?
00:14:19I hate to admit it
00:14:20but I'm guilty of...
00:14:21What?
00:14:22I didn't have that talk
00:14:23with my kids.
00:14:24Now I have 19 grandchildren.
00:14:25All right, they don't want
00:14:28to hear two old guys talk.
00:14:30They don't?
00:14:31Should we bring out
00:14:31some people for you?
00:14:33Yes, yes.
00:14:35Let's do that.
00:14:37We'll do it right away.
00:14:44When I got married
00:14:46I didn't just get a husband.
00:14:47I got a whole freak show
00:14:48that set up their tent
00:14:49right across the street.
00:14:52Oh, you were open
00:14:53and considerate
00:14:54and willing to look
00:14:55it's your own fault.
00:14:56You made me sick!
00:14:57Ray.
00:14:58Ray.
00:14:58Ray?
00:14:59Ray!
00:15:00Hello, Raymond.
00:15:01I do not have
00:15:02a drinking problem, sir.
00:15:03What I have
00:15:04is a mother-in-law problem.
00:15:07Woo!
00:15:11No.
00:15:12No.
00:15:12No.
00:15:13We're going to counseling.
00:15:14No!
00:15:14You meant what I said here today.
00:15:16I love you!
00:15:16I'm pregnant!
00:15:17I am not the yeller.
00:15:18You are the reason
00:15:19for the yeller!
00:15:20I have no idea
00:15:21what I have to put up with.
00:15:22No!
00:15:25No!
00:15:26No!
00:15:27Go!
00:15:28Go!
00:15:28Ladies and gentlemen
00:15:29Patricia Heaton.
00:15:31That'd hey!
00:15:33Go, go, go, go, go, go!
00:15:35Go, go, go!
00:15:36Look at these two.
00:15:50I'm so happy.
00:15:52Do you know, I didn't say this,
00:15:54we saw 200 women
00:15:55before we found Patty Heaton.
00:15:58200.
00:15:59And when she came in,
00:16:01she just knocked it out of the park.
00:16:03I mean, you can talk about what that day was like.
00:16:06Well, I was going through,
00:16:08and I think why the show worked,
00:16:09we were all going through
00:16:10what the Barone family was going through
00:16:13in our lives.
00:16:13We all had kids.
00:16:14We all were newly married.
00:16:15Yes.
00:16:15Yes, and I had a three-year-old
00:16:17and a one-year-old in my life.
00:16:19Right.
00:16:20I had a babysitting issue
00:16:22when I was coming to the audition.
00:16:23I needed to get back.
00:16:24I was cutting out coupons
00:16:26for 50 cents off two packs of ballpark francs.
00:16:30And so I needed the gig.
00:16:32And I got there,
00:16:33and there was a waiting room
00:16:34of at least eight women.
00:16:35And I thought,
00:16:36I'm never going to get back in time
00:16:37for the babysitter.
00:16:38And so I went in and sat there,
00:16:40and I just needed to get this audition done.
00:16:43And there was a guy sitting in the corner,
00:16:45and I thought,
00:16:45maybe he can get me some water
00:16:47while we're waiting for Ray to come.
00:16:48It was him.
00:16:49And I didn't really have to do research,
00:16:51and I didn't really have to do acting,
00:16:52because it was what we were all dealing with
00:16:55in our marriages.
00:16:55And so, fortunately,
00:16:57we got to monetize that.
00:16:59Yeah.
00:16:59Yes.
00:17:00You were living the role.
00:17:01You were living the role.
00:17:03You know,
00:17:03when I need to talk to Ray
00:17:04about, like,
00:17:05my feelings
00:17:05or our children,
00:17:07I know I haven't
00:17:08until the commercial's over.
00:17:09That gives me 30 seconds.
00:17:11And if there's a girl
00:17:12in the commercial
00:17:12or a truck with big wheels
00:17:14or, God forbid,
00:17:15a monkey,
00:17:17forget it.
00:17:18I think it was the first show
00:17:18I'd worked on.
00:17:19I'd worked for a while
00:17:19on TV
00:17:20that really encouraged us
00:17:22to bring in our stories
00:17:22from home.
00:17:23Phil in the writer's room
00:17:24only half-jokingly said,
00:17:26all right,
00:17:26we need two more stories.
00:17:27Anybody having a fight
00:17:28with their spouse?
00:17:29Phil's idea
00:17:30when he was running the show
00:17:31was,
00:17:32how can you write
00:17:32about real life
00:17:33if you can't live one?
00:17:34There's an episode
00:17:35of Raymond called
00:17:35The 10th Anniversary
00:17:36where Ray and Deborah
00:17:38put in the VHS tape
00:17:39of their wedding
00:17:39on their 10th anniversary.
00:17:43Oh.
00:17:45And discover that
00:17:46he's taped over
00:17:47with a Super Bowl.
00:17:50I did that.
00:17:51It was my first anniversary.
00:17:54We put in our VHS tape
00:17:55and discovered
00:17:56that I had taped over
00:17:57our wedding
00:17:58with an episode
00:17:59of Everybody Loves Raymond.
00:18:00Where did our wedding go?
00:18:07It's just like
00:18:08the stories seem authentic.
00:18:09Then whether it's
00:18:09more exaggerated
00:18:10than maybe it would have
00:18:11happened in real life,
00:18:11like that kernel of truth
00:18:13I think comes through.
00:18:1410 years,
00:18:15that's enough.
00:18:20It was such a pleasure
00:18:21to write
00:18:23for both of you.
00:18:25And there was
00:18:25one other
00:18:26that was,
00:18:29Phil's getting emotional.
00:18:30A little bit.
00:18:31Because it's a dream
00:18:32to wind up
00:18:33with people like this.
00:18:35If you're just a writer,
00:18:36you pray for someone
00:18:37to come along
00:18:38and give so much more
00:18:40beyond it
00:18:41and to make it real.
00:18:43My favorite thing
00:18:44about the cast
00:18:44was how they all committed
00:18:47to the most
00:18:49silly thing
00:18:50as if it was
00:18:51life and death.
00:18:53And that made it
00:18:54so alive
00:18:55and real
00:18:56and relatable.
00:18:57And the two of you
00:18:58had the most
00:18:59spectacular chemistry
00:19:00and I always said
00:19:01that Patty Heaton's
00:19:02the best wife
00:19:02on television.
00:19:03Well, we're also
00:19:05where I think
00:19:11we're forgetting
00:19:11one little key element
00:19:13that really sold me
00:19:14on you
00:19:15during that first audition.
00:19:17That's how desperate
00:19:18I was to get the job.
00:19:19Well, they don't know
00:19:20what you're talking about.
00:19:21I kissed him.
00:19:21Yes, there was
00:19:22a part where it says
00:19:25she kisses her husband
00:19:26and every other actress
00:19:27just kind of mimed it.
00:19:30For some reason,
00:19:31she did it.
00:19:34And when she walked out
00:19:35I go,
00:19:35that's the one!
00:19:38Patty,
00:19:38do you have
00:19:38a favorite episode?
00:19:41Yes.
00:19:41There was the one
00:19:42where we went away
00:19:44for a weekend
00:19:45and we put the suitcase
00:19:47on the landing.
00:19:48We put it there
00:19:49and neither of us
00:19:50would take it up
00:19:51and empty it
00:19:52and we keep waiting
00:19:53for the other person
00:19:54to do it.
00:19:55What are you doing?
00:19:57What?
00:19:59Just packing a soda
00:20:00for the road.
00:20:01Problem?
00:20:03That's how you're
00:20:03getting on the airplane.
00:20:04Yeah.
00:20:05Yeah, I'm traveling
00:20:06light, I'm traveling loose.
00:20:09What are you,
00:20:10a hobo?
00:20:14Why don't you
00:20:15take the suitcase?
00:20:16You know what?
00:20:18I don't need it.
00:20:21Okay, you know what?
00:20:22I'm getting it.
00:20:32What's that supposed to mean?
00:20:34It means
00:20:35I'll get it.
00:20:37I'll be the one
00:20:38who got it.
00:20:40Oh, no, no, no, no, no, no.
00:20:44I will get it.
00:20:45Let the record show
00:20:46that I got it.
00:20:47Let go of it.
00:20:47You let go of it.
00:20:48Let go of it.
00:20:49You let go of it.
00:20:50Let go of it.
00:20:51Let go of it.
00:20:52Let go of it.
00:20:53Let go of it.
00:20:53Let go of it.
00:20:54Let go of it.
00:20:55Don't let a suitcase filled with cheese be your big fork and spoon.
00:21:25This is all your fault.
00:21:35When did we get those?
00:21:42That's one of my favorite lines ever in the show, because that to me is marriage, especially a long marriage.
00:21:47Yes, so many people, and this is really, I think, what's not important about comedy, but every month at least, if not every week, somebody either on social media or if I run into them says,
00:22:01your show was the one thing that our family could laugh together when my father was sick.
00:22:07And it was his favorite thing that's been going on for 30 years.
00:22:10And so, you know, it just feels like we're able to do that.
00:22:15That's beautiful.
00:22:17We needed to cast Ray's brother.
00:22:21Should we bring him out soon?
00:22:33Trouble in paradise?
00:22:34Why would you want to hear me complain about Ray?
00:22:40Perhaps we haven't met.
00:22:41I'm Robert Perot.
00:22:43Hey, hey.
00:22:44Hey, Robert!
00:22:45Everybody loves Ray.
00:22:47Surprise!
00:22:48It's an iguana.
00:22:50Make a note.
00:22:54Here you go.
00:22:55Here you go.
00:22:55All right, sir.
00:22:58Who is the man?
00:23:00I am the man.
00:23:01I need to say something.
00:23:03Mom!
00:23:04No wife, no children.
00:23:06Pathetic.
00:23:07Thanks for the kind words.
00:23:14Brad Garrett, everybody.
00:23:15I'll come around.
00:23:28I'll come around.
00:23:34Philip.
00:23:34Hey.
00:23:35Oh.
00:23:41Oh, boy.
00:23:43It is so great to meet you.
00:23:49Do you have any memories of coming in and meeting Ray?
00:23:51And I remember auditioning when I read who Robert was.
00:23:56I just felt I knew this guy, you know?
00:23:58I was the youngest of three brothers growing up.
00:24:01And they were, you know, much more popular.
00:24:05And they had a lot more going for them.
00:24:07And I kind of felt like the kid that grew up under the sink,
00:24:10you know?
00:24:10So when I read it, I kind of felt like I knew who Robert was,
00:24:15you know?
00:24:16Yes, Ray.
00:24:19You have to raise your hand.
00:24:20It's your show.
00:24:23How could you fit under the sink?
00:24:25Well...
00:24:28We would write lines, jokes, and sometimes we didn't need them.
00:24:33Why?
00:24:33Because when we would cut to a face, they already said it with their look.
00:24:38And it was better than anything we could write.
00:24:41And the king of this was Brad.
00:24:43Yeah.
00:24:44Yes.
00:24:45That's very sweet.
00:24:46Just beautiful.
00:24:48Any lovely stories you have from your days on the show?
00:24:50Not really.
00:24:51No?
00:24:52Many.
00:24:53You know what I think of a lot is the episode,
00:24:56She's the One, where the girl I was dating ate the fly.
00:25:00Oh, yes.
00:25:01And when you tried to tell me what you saw in the kitchen,
00:25:06that scene was so great, but there was a moment where you were...
00:25:10Yeah.
00:25:11I almost passed out.
00:25:12Tell me, you were screaming or you had some type of...
00:25:15Well, I saw her eat the fly.
00:25:16Yeah.
00:25:17And then you come in and you talk to Patty and say,
00:25:19I really think she's the one.
00:25:21And I say, she's not the one, right?
00:25:23And I tell you she ate the fly, you don't believe me,
00:25:25and I tell the story.
00:25:26And again, all this pent up.
00:25:28And finally, I end with, she took the fly,
00:25:30she put it in the...
00:25:31And then I scream it, she ate it!
00:25:33And I hyperventilate it.
00:25:35And if you look very closely, you see me go,
00:25:37ooh, ooh, because I almost...
00:25:38I felt like I was going to pass out.
00:25:40Who hyperventilates saying a line?
00:25:43Oh.
00:25:48Hey, you got him!
00:25:49Yeah, I guess I did.
00:25:51Wow, good hands.
00:25:52All right, um...
00:25:53Oh, it's okay.
00:25:54I got it.
00:25:55I'll be about to put this down.
00:26:16The fly.
00:26:18That was flying around.
00:26:20Angela killed it.
00:26:22It fell on the table.
00:26:23She put it in a napkin.
00:26:24And then she ate it!
00:26:38Commitment!
00:26:40Brad, do you...
00:26:40Was that your favorite or do you have a favorite?
00:26:43Boy, there's so many.
00:26:44I really loved Lucky Suit, where Robert has an interview to work with the FBI.
00:26:53So, as I was saying...
00:26:54Is this a joke?
00:26:56Excuse me?
00:26:57Dear FBI agent Garfield, I'm writing to ask for your understanding.
00:27:02You have an interview this morning with my son, Robert Barone.
00:27:14Oh, Robbie, you scared me.
00:27:31How did your interview go?
00:27:34Come here, let me tell you about it.
00:27:38Didn't it go well?
00:27:40Well, it was going okay.
00:27:41Mary, and then Agent Garfield read me a letter about Crazy Robert and his Lucky Suit.
00:27:48Mom, what did he do?
00:27:49She faxed the FBI a letter about how she ruined my Lucky Suit.
00:27:53I wasn't sure it went through. It's the first time I ever used a fax machine.
00:27:58Mary, why don't you go into the kitchen and...
00:28:00Robert, how about you just stay here and maybe blink a few times?
00:28:03This is a good story.
00:28:13After one of my shows, this guy came up to me after the show, and it was really amazing.
00:28:20He was a veteran, and I remember that Phil, you and Ray would always send the DVDs to our troops
00:28:30when the show was on the air, and he gave me his retirement challenge coin.
00:28:37And he served from 1999 to 2020.
00:28:43And he said, you guys really helped when we needed the humor more than anything,
00:28:49and it really kept us buoyant in what we were going through every day.
00:28:55And, yeah.
00:28:58Yeah.
00:29:00It's an honor to be on this bus, and thanks for letting me on, even though I was a giant.
00:29:06There's more people coming out.
00:29:08We'll be right back, I guess.
00:29:09This is something, huh?
00:29:27Yeah, something.
00:29:31Something.
00:29:38It's something!
00:29:39And it still has the dent from where I picked Patty up and threw her into the thing.
00:30:08Very good.
00:30:09So there was someone else in that scene that I knew for a long time before we did the show.
00:30:15I saw her first in a play, and I thought she was really funny, and then I married that girl.
00:30:21I might not be the best person to help.
00:30:23I've spent the last ten years looking for an engagement ring.
00:30:27Oh, Robert, this is my friend Amy.
00:30:28We used to work at the PR firm together.
00:30:30Hi!
00:30:30Hi, Ray!
00:30:31Here we go!
00:30:32Oh, look, this one looks like a heart.
00:30:34Get off your crying and get off your pity pot, Nancy.
00:30:37I keep forgetting what a freak show this family is until somebody new comes in and looks at us like that.
00:30:44Wait!
00:30:53Did your mother come over and make things worse as usual?
00:30:58You're right, that's right.
00:30:59You're right!
00:30:59Let's go!
00:30:59MINISTER
00:31:07Here's Monica!
00:31:07Monica.

00:31:34Hi, Monica.
00:31:35Hi.
00:31:36You can tell Monica brought a slightly different energy to the family, right?
00:31:39Yes.
00:31:40You know, just being here is so incredible, right?
00:31:42I can't believe how everyone did the set.
00:31:45Yeah.
00:31:46Like, everybody backstage.
00:31:47And you guys being here, it's so overwhelming!
00:31:50It's unbelievable!
00:31:51Talk about...
00:31:52What about...
00:31:53Because first, you were recurring, right?
00:31:55Yes.
00:31:56Well, first, I didn't even know I'd be recurring.
00:31:58Can I tell you a little something?
00:31:59Yes.
00:32:00I was pregnant with our daughter, Lily, and I didn't know it.
00:32:03I found out after, so that first...
00:32:05Wait.
00:32:06I didn't know that!
00:32:07What?
00:32:08And flash forward, too, she just got married.
00:32:09And she just got married, Liz.
00:32:10She just got married.
00:32:11Oh, Lily, Lily got married.
00:32:12Yeah.
00:32:15We have a lot of babies on this show.
00:32:17A lot of babies.
00:32:18The moral is, this show made us horny.
00:32:22We were happy!
00:32:26When did you officially know you were a regular?
00:32:28It just started building and building and building.
00:32:31And the Robert and Amy, it really was...
00:32:34You know, I've had only a couple comedy partners in my life, but this one...
00:32:38And that writing to this couple was so perfect, wasn't it?
00:32:41It was great.
00:32:42It was great.
00:32:43It was so fun.
00:32:44And it was...
00:32:46To then be with, like, one of the greatest comic teams of all time, Ray and Deborah.
00:32:51That's you guys!
00:32:52Yeah, you were brilliant!
00:32:54So it was really lucky.
00:32:55Do you have a favorite episode?
00:32:57Oh, yeah.
00:32:58It's all of them you mentioned.
00:32:59There's so many favorite episodes.
00:33:01The one that captures my heart is because my dear, beloved Georgia, who I was very close
00:33:06with, the Georgia Angle, who played my mom.
00:33:08And it's Pat's Secret.
00:33:11Oh.
00:33:12Hi.
00:33:14Is everything all right?
00:33:16What, can't sleep?
00:33:18Yeah, me neither.
00:33:19Yeah, me neither.
00:33:30Mind if I bum a ciggy?
00:33:34Robert was smoking.
00:33:35I wasn't.
00:33:36I wasn't!
00:33:37Smell him.
00:33:38Come here.
00:33:39Come here.
00:33:41Oh, my God!
00:33:45Do you know what he's been doing?
00:33:47Smell him.
00:33:49I'm killing him.
00:33:50I'm not there.
00:33:51It wasn't lying.
00:33:52It was more like she was just letting off steam so you don't let it out on the person
00:33:57you love.
00:33:58You know?
00:33:59Like Ray.
00:34:01He has to drive around the block a few times every night listening to the radio before
00:34:04he goes home to face Deborah.
00:34:06Are you crazy?
00:34:07When I'm angry at my cat, Miss Puss, sometimes I'll sneak up behind her and bark like a dog.
00:34:27I like to blow up fireworks.
00:34:28Pat!
00:34:29I thought since it wasn't a secret anymore.
00:34:42She was just in heaven and she always talked to everyone about the writing on this show working
00:34:50with Phil for years and years and years after.
00:34:52Beautiful.
00:34:53So thank you for letting us be living back.
00:34:54You know what?
00:34:55We're so lucky to work with these comedy legends that we idolized.
00:34:59You know, we stand on the shoulders of the great people that came before us.
00:35:00Obviously people have passed and we've seen a lot of clips of our mom and dad on the show.
00:35:04But when we come back we'll talk about them.
00:35:09He's been in the room for years and years and years after so.
00:35:10Beautiful.
00:35:11Thank you for letting us be living back.
00:35:12You know what?
00:35:13We're so lucky to work with these comedy legends that we idolized.
00:35:14You know, we stand on the shoulders of the great people that came before us.
00:35:16Obviously people have passed and we've seen a lot of clips of our mom and dad on the
00:35:21show, but when we come back we'll talk about them.
00:35:24them so let's talk about the parents for you and me it it it's very personal because they were so
00:35:54based on our parents yeah the mother was more you i mean the mother was and the dad was more you i
00:36:00used to say everything you saw peter do my father probably did in real life without pants on
00:36:07but i remember just talking about peter during the pilot episode so now i'm a i'm a young guy who
00:36:15just got fired from news radio and here i am again uh attempting a show and i'm nervous and peter is
00:36:22the great peter boyle or this iconic movie guy and he's an imposing figure i had didn't know then
00:36:28how sweet he really was and and i hadn't really had a conversation with peter and our paths were
00:36:34crossing and i swear to god it must have been right here and he just stops me and i don't we i haven't
00:36:39said anything to him he just stops me and i guess he could tell he could tell that i was a little
00:36:43nervous and he just looks and he goes i remember the words he just goes it's just like water just
00:36:49let it flow and he and then he leaves and at that time i'm like what does that mean
00:36:55and and even though as an actor i didn't know what exactly what that meant but i do now
00:37:02just the gesture the gesture of him reaching out to me it's everything yeah it's everything
00:37:09yeah beautiful anyway go ahead talk about we saw a hundred ladies for the part they all read with
00:37:20that fruit of the month scene no one came close to doris robert no one she was what was in my head
00:37:29and in my life and and was was so beyond even my my real mother used to say you know it is a little
00:37:38exaggerated
00:37:39but you never saw that with doris because she was always spot on she was always a hundred percent
00:37:48believable peter too again i keep reiterating the same thing we could be the best writers in the world
00:37:54it wouldn't matter if we didn't have these people and peter boyle and doris roberts
00:38:02let me show you something let me show you something
00:38:05marie oh well okay oh frank this is wonderful you dumb bastard
00:38:20what write it out you put a stop to this now all right dad let me ask you she's in a bad mood what
00:38:31two three days tops before you know it what used to be a bad mood now takes over and becomes her only
00:38:38mood and then well then you become like me
00:38:44when not a day goes by that i don't wish there was a comet screaming towards earth to bring me sweet relief
00:38:52that's gonna need another coat
00:39:05did you say that you like amy more than deborah i am not saying that i like amy more than deborah

00:43:58everything happened over food there was so much food on the show
00:44:02and it just sort of taught you that like lessons are learned and arguments are made
00:44:08when you're sitting down to eat you learn a lot about each other
00:44:12you should ask deborah how she makes this
00:44:14i should ask deborah

00:57:32Everybody leave!
00:57:34That was pretty safe.
00:57:36That is good.
00:57:38When Raymond left for Hollywood, me and my brother Bobby decided to put a little note in his suitcase, because we were going to miss him, you know?
00:57:56And I didn't hear anything, and neither did my brother Robert, for nine years. I didn't know if he'd read it.
00:58:03And then the final show comes, and it was very, very dramatic and, you know, emotional, and in his speech, he says, I want to read something.
00:58:16This is a little note that my brother, both my brothers gave me when I went beefing New York.
00:58:24I'm saying, oh my God, you saved it?
00:58:26They snuck this into my luggage.
00:58:29What I wrote to him was, I hope you remember this verse, what does it profit a man?
00:58:36He gains the whole world, but loses his soul.
00:58:40He had tears in his eyes, and he goes, I hope I did that, God.
00:58:46And it was very moving, and I think he did. I think God would be very happy with him.
00:58:51Thank you so much for being with us tonight. We're so thrilled to be with you. We owe everything to you guys.
00:59:02You know, when we started, it was a show about a family, four families, and after a little while, it was being made by a family.
00:59:09What you don't see are all the people that really made the show with us, some of whom we haven't seen since we went off the air.
00:59:18So if we could, let's bring most of them out.
00:59:22Yes, Kat.
00:59:31I only got the show.
00:59:35Lovely, lovely.
00:59:52Now, one little more thing we want to share with the audience.
00:59:57It's kind of like a gag reel.
00:59:59So we want to share that with you and with everybody who made the show.
01:00:04What?
01:00:06What's wrong?
01:00:07What happened?
01:00:09You kicked me.
01:00:12I did?
01:00:13Oh, right in the garden of good and evil.
01:00:17Right in Geppetto's workshop.
01:00:20Right in Granny's apples.
01:00:22Right in the Hard Rock Cafe.
01:00:25You know where I had to go for this suit?
01:00:28Wherever it was.
01:00:29I'll bet it was dark.
01:00:41I'm just a simple man who tried to make a difference.
01:00:45I still put my pants on one leg at a time.
01:00:50Yeah, but you should stop when they reach your nipples.
01:00:52You know where I had to go for this suit?
01:01:04A little shop of horrors.
01:01:08Okay.
01:01:08Come on.
01:01:12Come on, man.
01:01:14Now, all that remains is the issue of we should be granted guardianship in the event that both of you die at the same time.
01:01:20Whoa, slow down.
01:01:21Now, we're still trying to have an orgasm at the same time.
01:01:22We're still trying to have an orgasm at the same time.
01:01:32You know where I had to go for this suit?
01:01:36Hmm?
01:01:38Goldens?
01:01:40That's right.
01:01:46Hey, Marie, I knew you named them, but I didn't know you fed them.
01:01:49It's like I've been to the world where ladies want Ray.
01:01:57Bert.
01:01:58Ray Bert.
01:01:58Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
01:01:59Ray Bert.

01:02:01With your penis and my money, we're unstoppable.
01:02:03You better have a lot of money.
01:02:11To be honest, Debra, it's not a style I'd ever wear.
01:02:19Nice try, though.
01:02:22Put it on.
01:02:31Thank you, everybody.
01:02:33Want to say goodbye?
01:02:34I want to say, I want to say to all of you and to all of you, I used to say this to Ray
01:02:42all the time, thanks for the good life.
01:02:47Yeah.
