In a deeply emotional moment during the Artemis 2 mission, astronauts paid tribute beyond Earth.

The crew proposed naming a lunar crater “Carroll” in memory of Carroll Taylor Wiseman, the late wife of mission commander Reid Wiseman, who passed away from cancer in 2020.

Canadian astronaut Jeremy Hansen shared the heartfelt announcement during a live broadcast, describing the crater as a “bright spot on the Moon” — a symbol of remembrance that will be visible from Earth at certain times.

The tribute highlights the human side of space exploration, as the NASA mission prepares to take astronauts around the Moon for the first time in decades.

A mission of science, legacy, and love.

00:00The first one we'd like to suggest is a named crater in honor of our great spacecraft integrity.
00:08And the second one, and especially meaningful for this crew, is a number of years ago we started this journey
00:15in our close-knit astronaut family, and we lost a loved one.
00:20And there's a feature in a really neat place on the moon, and it is on the nearside-farside boundary.
00:27In fact, it's just on the nearside of that boundary.
00:31And so at certain times of the moon's transit around Earth, we will be able to see this from Earth.
00:39And so we lost a loved one. Her name was Carol.
00:44That's supposed to read, the mother of Katie and Ellie.
00:52And if you want to find this one, you look at Glushko, and it's just to the northwest of that,
00:58at the same latitude as Ohm, and it's a bright spot on the moon.
01:05And we would like to call her Carol.
01:08And you spell that C-A-R-R-O-L-L.
