00:28main purpose of converting a van like this is it doubled up as everyday
00:33transport so 1967 triumph there look at that 650 try and what a body machine as
00:40well he actually went to buy a greenhouse came back with the greenhouse stacked in
00:45the pickup and this this motorcycle beside the greenhouse and that's that's the
00:49type of thing he used to do he just used to sniff them out they're not
00:52unbelievable Rayleigh the Matthewsons a dynasty of classic car auctioneers 55
01:03the joys of an auction most people will go to us out with something in mind but come
01:07away with something different the fun is the chase you just don't know what's on
01:14the end of the phone what you're gonna find when you open them doors this is a
01:17family's love affair with motors that have lived a life testing testing most people will buy a car

02:31around a motor car they always want to go to the driver's door they want to sit in the car
02:35you keep
02:36them away from that as long as possible Martin sold cars for 60 years now he's doing a job on
02:42his 1965 Alvis beautifully designed vehicle I have added since I've owned the car the chrome wire wheels
02:50it had the steel wire wheels but I think the chrome wire wheels give it a little bit more character
02:55the
02:57car is fitted with a sunshine roof we have two very nice wide easy access doors presenting a very smart
03:10interior Duke of Edinburgh owned an Alvis TE convertible come on Alfie he thinks he's going out
03:18for the day nice twin exhaust pipes but the back of the round of car again very stylish this is
03:26in my
03:26opinion anyway I'm biased I suppose we're now getting to the exciting part you've shown the
03:33person the benefits of the motor car as you've taken the round of the styling of the car and the
03:37reasons why things are done um they are now very anxious to get into the driving seat so you've now
03:45got that person basically in your hand you can control what they want to do so it's like having
03:53Derek here we've got a beautiful Walnut dashboard um all the instruments there you've got rev counter
04:03speedometer oil pressure gauge water temperature gauge fuel gauge etc all the necessary equipment you
04:09need it's subtle stylish I recommend you go and buy one this is the ideal car for you have you
04:17bought your
04:17checkbook it'll be a wrench for Martin to sell the car which was left in by his late stepfather Douglas
04:31her name is the Duchess Douglas always described always it's all take the Duchess out today so you
04:39know it is a member of the family but time has to come when it's got to go sadly and
04:47of course any
04:48prospective buyer would like to see the engine
04:53got rid of all the pot it releases how long you had it for 30 bloody years
05:05I'm just sat in the seat put my hands straight on it
05:17was it worth the way of course because you never have to open the bonnet analysis you're such a
05:24wonderful reliable car so that's the reason why oh well there we are beautiful three litre
05:32six-cylinder Alvis engine lovely straight 130 odd brake horse engine twin s shoe carburettors all the
05:42equipment that you require for a very very nice motor car with four-wheeled don't knock disc brakes
05:48we'll drive quickly we'll stop quickly sadly I shed a few tears talking to her in the workshops but she's
05:59going to have to go somebody else will enjoy that motor car and continue with it and because it is
06:06a
06:06car to be proud of it knows British engineering at the best got back hang on a minute check front
06:22of the
06:30lorry it looks like Charlie's getting the hang of this collection lock
06:35hang on hang on hang on hang on hang on hang on hang on hang on ring
06:39Oh look at that that waste bit that look at that
06:45солнicaannist chief of all the car all right
06:46remember when he's going to use to come in he used to run out
06:49see how many clicks he could get to be better tight the tight the tight lock
06:55he's picked up a 1963 mark 1 Ford Cortina deluxe
06:59that's been stored in a Melton-Mowbray lock-up for a decade.
07:03Hey, she's a level old car, Charlie.
07:06I think it's a straight gin and an old thing.
07:09A two-door cortene, obviously, you don't see them on every street corner, do you?
07:13So I think it's kept really, really well.
07:16Obviously, there's bits round it,
07:17but you can see where it's being damp, look, cross-bottom at the door and that, so...
07:21To be fair, I think he's caught it about at the right time.
07:23If it'd have been in there another ten years,
07:25then it would maybe be a different story, wouldn't it?
07:28Gives a shove.
07:34That's it. That'll do.
07:45All me and Amy are on top of the job at Bike Collections now, aren't we?
07:48Yeah.
07:48Yeah, in and out. Don't even know where we've been.
07:51It's another beautiful day in Yorkshire,
07:54but that won't deter Mathewson's top motorcycle sibling collection team.
08:00We are going to Bishop Auckland for quite a varied collection of bikes, I'm led to believe.
08:06AJFC, so a nice variant of different motorbikes, that should be good.
08:10So, yeah, that should be a good one.
08:11Hopefully.
08:12As long as Amy keeps me right on the maps.
08:15While the Mathewson's risk a soaking...
08:18See you soon.
08:19See you later.
08:2060 miles away in County Durham, the weather's taken a turn for the better,
08:25and the remnants of a 20-strong motorbike collection are waiting to be picked up.
08:30It's part of his collections.
08:31Some of the motorbikes have already been sold, and this is...
08:35We have five left, four here, and one up in his motorbike shed.
08:41Nigel Henderson is moving on the last of his dad's bikes and cars.
08:46Alan died three years ago, and by all accounts, loved a bargain.
08:55So, that particular one, I can remember one day he went to buy a seat for it
09:01and came back with two cars and no seat.
09:04That's the sort of thing he would do.
09:08Another time he went to get the seat for it and came back with another two motorbikes.
09:13So everything was a project.
09:15So, in the summer months, he used to mess on with his cars and his vintage pick-up,
09:21and in the winter months, he would lock himself away in his motorbike shed
09:26and do his motorbikes up.
09:28So everything was an ongoing project, some taken absolutely years.
09:33Amongst the whole, there's a Royal Enfield in bits,
09:36a pair of Triumphs and a 1960 AJS 250.
09:41He actually went to buy a greenhouse.
09:43Came back with the greenhouse, stacked in the pick-up,
09:46and this motorcycle beside the greenhouse,
09:49and that's the type of thing he used to do.
09:51He just used to sniff them out.
09:53I don't know, unbelievable, really.
09:55It's a similar story with the 1965 Norton.
09:59So he'd only gone for the paper,
10:01and then the next thing you know, this arrives.
10:05Daughters Alison and Fiona have seen it all before.
10:08All these bikes here, he used to share with people,
10:13and Deb would always have to take them to show his bikes and his cars,
10:17and that wasn't... He wasn't borsting.
10:19He always had a story to tell them.
10:21He had a love for life. He absolutely loved life.
10:25Every morning, he would get up,
10:27and he'd be looking for another project and something else to do.
10:31Also going to the auction at a later date are a couple of Mercs,
10:35an F-Reg SEL,
10:36and a 1967 2.8-litre, six-cylinder pagoda.
10:42This was his pride and joy.
10:44He's had it nearly 50 years.
10:47Probably been out in all that time twice in the rain.
10:50On a Sunday, he would go up to Barnard Castle,
10:53about 15 miles away, get an ice cream,
10:55sit and look at it, sit on the bench, look at his car,
10:58drive it back home.
11:00He'd be on his hands and knees, and he'd be shoe-polishing.
11:04Everybody back in the day would shoe-polish the tyres like this,
11:07but he'd be laid on his back, doing it inside.
11:10An absolute fanatic, absolutely loved it.
11:15Initially, we didn't want to sell anything,
11:17and I wanted to keep everything, you know,
11:20but there's only so much stuff you can keep, isn't there?
11:24And if the next chapter's as good as the chapters before,
11:28we're on to a winner.
11:29Yeah.
11:49Now, Martin, lovely to see you.
11:51Likewise.
11:52Nice to see you, mate.
11:53Nice to see you.
11:55Lovely little spot.
11:57Nice little place you've got here, isn't it?
11:59Well, it's not bad.
12:00Nice big shed.
12:02All got a big workshop, yes.
12:03Way around there all day long, can't you, mate?
12:05Bang on, eh?
12:07Derek's landed in Staffordshire
12:08to pick up Martin Anker's 60-year-old Alvis.
12:12But as always, he's tempted by what else might be on offer.
12:16I've got a BMC car in there that don't leak oil.
12:20Really?
12:20Well, you drained it out, have you?
12:22Well, it's a Boris Lousand.
12:24I reckon it's the only one in bloody prison.
12:26It is the only one in captivity, I can assure you.
12:29Yeah.
12:30Nice, isn't it?
12:32Yeah.
12:32What do you reckon that's worth?
12:33Hmm.
12:35Got a soft spot for them.
12:36I think they're great, like, you know.
12:38And a nice one like that would do 10 grand, wouldn't it?
12:40Yeah.
12:40But eyes are soon back on the main attraction,
12:43a 1965 Alvis TE in light metallic gold.
12:48How long you had this?
12:49Since 1996.
12:52Oh, my word, haven't you?
12:53It's been in the family since 1969.
12:56Long time, isn't it?
12:58Bloody hell.
12:59Have you got overdrive on this?
13:01No, it's got five-speed ZF box.
13:02Of course it has.
13:04Absolutely, yeah.
13:05You're just testing me, aren't you?
13:07Yeah.
13:07No, I forgot it's got a ZF.
13:10Nice, isn't it?
13:11If I hadn't been an Aston man, I'd have had one of these.
13:15All right, we won't mess about.
13:17What do you reckon I should put as a reserve price on that?
13:21Ooh, you won't like this.
13:25All I can tell you is what I know it's worth.
13:28What do you reckon it's worth?
13:2920 grand.
13:31What you put on it, it's entirely up to you, but...
13:34If it went for 20, Derek, I'd be satisfied.
13:39Yeah, it's its money, isn't it?
13:40Yeah.
13:41And if somebody wants to give me 30k for the number plate, they can buy it as well.
13:46I thought they'd have put it more than that, to be honest.
13:48I think that's value for money.
13:50Nice car.
13:51Yeah, it's all right.
13:52Yeah, you've got to make allowances for an Alvis.
13:55You have, because there's so many poor ones out there.
13:59But when you come across a nice one, it's a bit of a novelty.
14:01I mean, it's not a Minter, not a Concourse, but it's pretty good.
14:07Steeped in history, mate.
14:08Yeah.
14:09Can't buy that, can you?
14:10Sorry.
14:11I'm sad to see it go.
14:13You feel it, mate, don't you?
14:14Yeah.
14:15I know where you're coming from.
14:16I've loved this car.
14:17It's been a super car.
14:19You know, I've had hundreds of cars in my lifetime in a motor trade.
14:24And I've never been emotional about a motor car before.
14:27No, no.
14:28Oh, my God.
14:31Now, will he be all right driving one of these posh cars?
14:37Sweet old girl, isn't it?
14:39Smooth as silver.
14:45Powerful old car.
14:46Smooth and powerful.
14:49Hope you haven't been bored stiff to all Codgers.
14:54Ticked over up there, didn't it?
14:55Just beautiful.
14:57Can't beat horsepower, can you?
14:58You cannot beat it.
15:00It's got to go to somebody that'll love that car, because it's...
15:03Well, you've just driven it, and I think you've enjoyed it.
15:08Go on, Derek.
15:09Don't prolong my agony.
15:12Bye, baby.
15:20And I could drive it.
15:22Yeah?
15:22Yeah?
15:22Yeah, not bad.
15:27The old Cortina.
15:28Still badged as a console.
15:30Yeah, they had that sort of crossover period, didn't they?
15:33Yeah, no funny, isn't it?
15:34Yeah, Ford console before they went full bore Cortina.
15:38Lurking in the showroom, the dusty Ford that Charlie brought in from Melton Mowbray.
15:44The appeal of that is what?
15:45The amount of doors it's got, or the amount of doors it hasn't got.
15:49It's not great, bless her, but she's so genuine.
15:52She's been in the garage for 30-odd years or something, couldn't it?
15:54I was lucky enough to have a Lotus Cortina Mark 1, and I made the decision to sell it.
16:01Yeah, I lost a little bit on that one of mine, just proved you can't win on everything.
16:04They were achieving in excess of 50,000 at one point.
16:0840-ish now.
16:10They all want two doors, four door, half the price.
16:15More equals less.
16:16I know she's got some pain issues and bits and pieces, I get that, but little lump there,
16:21look, little sweetie.
16:22I think that car will achieve somewhere between £3,500 and £4,000.
16:29Which seems incredibly good value to me.
16:31Yeah, but if it was a four door, a couple of grand for a four door.
16:36And if you were talking Lotus Twin Cam?
16:39Ah, yeah, a Lotus Twin Cam in that condition there, wanting a bit of work,
16:44it'll still push £30,000.
16:47Crazy, isn't it, really?
16:53Ford Cortina Deluxe, there we are, look, two door Cortina.
16:58That's the one that, ah!
16:59Yeah.
16:59I picked it up, been stood for about 20, I believe, but 10 in the lock-up that I got
17:04it out of.
17:05So, nice, early, two door Cortina, look, we've got £3,500 and we're off.
17:10It's been stood in a nice dry garage, which is the best thing.
17:13At £3,700 here with me, £3,800.
17:17It will make the car, it should do more money than that, really.
17:19Provisional, but we will try at £3,900, I should think so.
17:23At £4,000 then, at £4,000, £4,400.
17:26£4,200, at £4,300, still provisional, but we will try.
17:32Provisional, Norfolk at £4,300, thank you.
17:34I wasn't far, but I'm far, far and a half.
17:37I don't quite know whether it was over-reserved.
17:39It was all the way, let's put it that way.
17:42And, yeah, they had a £5,000 reserve.
17:45And the best bidder, the day I could get, was £4,300, which has been accepted.
17:50So, right decision, rightly so.
17:52Yes, I think that's its money, simple as that.
17:55So, away it goes.
18:08There we go, look.
18:12Oh, blimey.
18:14Oh, he likes his Mercs.
18:16Hey, you guys, how are you?
18:17You all right?
18:18You all right?
18:18Yeah, yeah, nice to meet you.
18:20Nigel, yeah.
18:21Nice to meet you, Jack.
18:23Jack and Amy have made it to County Durham to pick up the Henderson family's motorbikes.
18:29Oh, wow, you've got a fair collection of bits and pieces, haven't you, Nigel?
18:32Oh, yeah, the good collection.
18:33There's a few gone now, but this is what we've got left.
18:37These were all his then, were they?
18:38Yeah, he had a few more, but we've, you know, we've sold them.
18:42And then there's another one in bits that he's been doing up for the last 18 years.
18:48Everything's a long-term project.
18:51Yeah, that's it.
18:52And you think, do I spend the money on restoring that, or do I go and buy another one to
18:56go with it?
18:57Yeah, so that's the story.
18:59I know, I know.
19:00Where'd you stop?
19:01The bike market is a bit low at the moment.
19:03Yeah.
19:04It's certainly a buyer's market.
19:06But it has sort of increased.
19:07To be fair, they did really die off for a couple of months, but I suppose the sun's out now,
19:10isn't it?
19:10That's right.
19:11So, obviously, we'll try our best for you.
19:14A little butcher's bike will sneak in first in the corner.
19:16This is clean, isn't it?
19:17It's finishing off.
19:19A nice little bike, isn't it?
19:20These are well.
19:22Yeah, kind of buys him a lot, that's why, yeah.
19:28I feel that he's with us, watching these bikes go.
19:33Nine times out of ten, I'd say us office girls, the rest of them, bless them, don't really get out.
19:38But no, it's just nice to see where they actually come from and the story behind them.
19:43And then, obviously, we see the other side of it as well, after they've sold and where they're going to.
19:48I'm going to have to start taking all the girls out with me.
19:50You're going to have to do one at a time.
19:52I'm going to have to just keep changing passengers every month, aren't I?
19:55And then the ones that give you the wrong direction don't take them again.
20:00Lovely to meet you.
20:01All right.
20:04Thank you very much.
20:06Safe journey home.
20:07Thanks.
20:08Bye.
20:08Bye.
20:09Bye.
20:10Bye.
20:10Bye.
20:12Bye.
20:12Bye.
20:13Bye.
20:14Bye.
20:14Bye.
20:15Bye.
20:18Bye.
20:18Bye.
20:27The sun's shining and North Yorkshire's looking its best.
20:33The good weather's also brought the browsers out.
20:36And Derek's homed in on a vehicle that for around eight grand has got holidays written all over it.
20:44Here we have.
20:45Basically, it's an Austin A60 van, bagged as a Morris, which is fine.
20:50It's a 71-72, as we can see.
20:53It's a two-berth caravanette conversion.
20:56It tickles me a bit, really, when you talk to people and they say, I'm going to have one of
21:00them new-style pop-up roofs and fit it into me day van, for argument's sake.
21:05And I have to laugh, because here we are, 1970, and basically the same thing, but better.
21:12So it's not a pop-up roof, it's an elevating roof.
21:16This was the era when Britain's post-war workers had spare time and cash to splash.
21:23Van makers like Bedford and Commer tapped into that, as the country had its first campervan moment.
21:29Full height means you can stand up, of course, both ends rather than just one end.
21:34No matter what people say, you can't get away from the main purpose of converting a van like this is
21:40it doubled up as everyday transport.
21:43And with a top-down, it went into an everyday garage.
21:46That's the big advantage.
21:58Oh, dear. No.
22:00It'd be like something out of Carry On Camping, wouldn't it, pulling up on the campsite with that?
22:04There's a little rail, look, you can hang your tea towel on it to dry when you've washed up.
22:09What is that, Paul, that 1971 Morris?
22:11Oh, lovely, innit? An A60.
22:14Is it? Is it lovely?
22:15Yeah.
22:16Oh, right.
22:17It's an early camper, innit? Lovely.
22:20Lovely, it's, uh, yeah.
22:22No, you're not seeing it?
22:23You know, I think she might be more of a five-star girl.
22:26Do you think so?
22:28What, the group or the hotel?
22:32But it's got a bench seat, so you could possibly fit three of you in there, small people.
22:37That'll be to take the water in, look, and then that's for your petrol.
22:41Is that what it is, Paul? Is it?
22:42Yeah, yeah, it will be, won't it, yeah?
22:44I would think that way around as well, yeah.
22:47You don't want to mix them up, do you?
22:48No, no, we've just...
22:49It would be very nice brushing your teeth with petrol, would it?
22:51Oh, ho, ho, ho, ho, ho.
22:52Perhaps they'd be clean.
22:58Er, 509, the 1971 Morris there.
23:01Little Morris camper van there.
23:02Well, you know a bit about these.
23:04No.
23:04There you are, there we are.
23:05What mod is it?
23:06Isn't that?
23:08Suntour. Suntour, there we are.
23:10No, not familiar with that.
23:12Where are we? You tell me.
23:14Anyone want to start me then?
23:15£5,000 asking.
23:18Anything on there, Will?
23:19No, I'm afraid I've got nothing on my sheet on this one.
23:23No.
23:28Only if you are paying.
23:32That's it for the motorhome.
23:34And with no interest,
23:35it returned to its owner for a proper staycation.
23:44Alvis!
23:45You want me to come and have a look at this Alvis, don't you?
23:48It looks a real genuine old car though, doesn't it?
23:51I like bits like this.
23:52Right attention to detail, isn't it?
23:54Just lovely, isn't it?
23:56They're lovely old girl, aren't they?
23:57They're a good usable old car.
24:00There's a kink there.
24:01There's micro blistering here.
24:04There's micro blistering everywhere, really.
24:06Now we've all had micro blistering.
24:09And it's gutting.
24:11Yeah.
24:12Moisture either in or under the paint.
24:16It won't show straight away, you see.
24:18They're lovely for a while,
24:19and then they start and come to light,
24:22and you think, oh.
24:23But let's be honest,
24:25down the road, whizzing along,
24:27it's lovely, isn't she?
24:28What a majestic old girl.
24:33Alvis is one of the great, and almost forgotten names,
24:38of British car manufacturing.
24:40But back in the day,
24:41its vehicles set the standard for sporting excellence.
24:45Alvis also made aeroplane engines and armoured cars,
24:48but it was the glamorous Tourers that captured the imagination,
24:51made to the highest levels of luxury,
24:54to rival Bentley and Jaguar.
24:56The T21 series set the tone,
24:59with its three-litre engines adding speed and panache.
25:02But as the 1960s rolled on, sales dropped,
25:05and the company was taken over by Rover.
25:08However, in recent years, the brand has been revived,
25:10and the high-end, high-spec tradition continues.
25:19In my opinion, that car there, in that condition,
25:23is worth late teens.
25:2520 if he's lucky.
25:27Lucky.
25:28I can't see it.
25:29Lots of people that come into the classic movement,
25:32all think they want a Jag, or an Alvis, or a whatever.
25:36And, in my opinion, got it all wrong,
25:40buy yourself a Morris Thousand, there's one there, look.
25:42Morris Thousand, MGB, Triumph Feral, maybe.
25:46But certainly Morris Thousand, MGB.
25:50Cheapest classic car in the world to run, to maintain, super reliable, brilliant.
25:55And then if it's for you, then move on to the Alvis.
25:59And you mark my words, whoever has entered it, whoever is selling it, vendor,
26:04best thing he can do, buy himself a Morris Thousand.
26:07It is, honestly.
26:08Funny you say that, because he has got a Morris Traveller.
26:13There you go.
26:14There you go.
26:16There you go.
26:16Brilliant.
26:18I was right then, weren't I?
26:19Hey, look at that.
26:20That's twice this week I've been right.
26:21Twice.
26:24Yeah.
26:25So, that's my take on it.
26:27Yep.
26:28Start off with a Moggy, finish off with a Moggy.
26:30Brilliant.
26:31And have everything else in between.
26:33Including the Alvis.
26:34Including the Alvis.
26:35Including the Alvis.
26:36See, it's a nice old cat.
26:37She's all right.
26:43Right, she's yours.
26:45The Bishop opened, bikes are back.
26:48And there's a reception committee.
26:52So, T, another bike for you to go in with all the other bikes?
26:56Good.
26:57A bit of loan bikes, we could do with a few more.
27:00How many bikes have you got in?
27:0171.
27:03How many more do you want?
27:05Last year, I had 140.
27:12It's quite interesting, really, if you think about it.
27:15I mean, it's got...
27:18The Shockers have clearly been in the sea for a few years, haven't they?
27:21There's no doubt about that.
27:23And it's a Royal Enfield single, 350, 500, I don't know what.
27:27And having joined the throng, Derrick's on the case.
27:32It's a winter project.
27:34That's it.
27:34Which winter is debatable, but it's one of a few winters, probably.
27:39As well as an AJS and a Norton, there's a pair of Triumphs, including a classic off-roader.
27:45It's a little Triumph Cub, a little 200 Cub.
27:47Nice little trial, an upswept exhaust.
27:50Really does look the part.
27:51Sooty's a trialling man, he'll tell you more about this, I would think.
27:54He's probably trialled them.
27:56Have you ever trialled a Cub?
27:58No.
28:00Yeah.
28:02They're still popular.
28:03They are popular in, you know, like pre-'65 trails and stuff like that.
28:06Yeah.
28:07Yeah, that's a nice little machine, that, actually.
28:09And it's a right purposeful little bike, isn't it?
28:12Pre-'65, of course, so it was pre-Japanese, who came over, like they did with every other model of motorbike,
28:19and wiped the floor with us, unfortunately.
28:21That's exactly what they did.
28:22Poor old Cub never stood a chance, though.
28:24And the pick of the bunch, a bike with great escape vibes.
28:29It's a 650, that's a trophy, and slightly different forks and rubber covers and stuff like that, headlamps like this.
28:36They just looked a little bit more, I think they were maybe Americanised, built for the American market, really.
28:42Because they do look, they look like a Steve McQueen bike, I think, don't they, you know?
28:46It's got what the lads used to call a knacker catcher, which was, obviously, it's a little rack to put
28:51your folded-up Mack and tie it on with a bungee.
28:54And they said if you're unlucky enough and went over the top, you could easily get tangled up in there,
29:00like, you know?
29:00But I think you'd have to get flies open at that time, personally.
29:03And I don't know many guys that rode these, but they'd fly their flies open, like, but...
29:08Yeah, I think the answer was keep your flies shut.
29:12And keep your fingers crossed.
29:15But that's, I think, so, I think that'll do somewhere between three and a half and four and a half.
29:20Nice bike.
29:24614 is the lovely Triumph, 1967 Triumph there, look at that.
29:28650 Triumph, what a bonny machine as well.
29:31At £3,500 we've got.
29:33At £3,500 then are we all done at £35?
29:36Submit it at £3,500.
29:38It's still provisional for the Triumph 650, proving it's still a tricky market for old British bikes.
29:47A 1960 AJS, £1,000 cheap bike, gonna sell it provisionally then £1,000.
29:53Bargain of the day, that.
29:55Provisional.
29:56Norton Jubilee.
29:58She's a nice old bike, makes a change in the colours as well.
30:01There you go.
30:01At £1,500.
30:03We'll submit that for you.
30:05The Royal Enfield.
30:07There we are.
30:08Don't expect to ride it home.
30:10Where are we going to be?
30:12£800 we've got.
30:13Provisional then at £800 that we've all done.
30:15£800 we'll submit it.
30:171959 Triumph Trials bike there.
30:19Look at that.
30:19That's a nice bit of kit.
30:20£1,350.
30:22£1,375.
30:23At £1,375 then I'm going to drop the hammer then at £1,375, £14.
30:28They have to be sharpish that he's going to lose it.
30:30£1,400.
30:31Still the cheapest bike in the world.
30:33At £1,425.
30:34£1,425 then I'm going to sell.
30:36The hammer's coming down at £1,425.
30:39Sold.
30:39Too late.
30:40Missed it.
30:40There you go.
30:42Which leaves one of Derek's favourite forms of transport.
30:47A pushers bike, a trains bike.
30:49I used to ride one when I was 14 or 15.
30:51I've done many miles on one of them.
30:53Fell off them a few times and all.
30:57There we are then.
30:58Current bid, £75.
31:00£75 we've got.
31:01Nowhere near enough.
31:02£100.
31:02£100.
31:03£150.
31:05£200.
31:05£200.
31:06£250.
31:07Iron brakes and a little wheel.
31:08Dead right.
31:09£300.
31:10£300.
31:11There's a little club being formed in York for them, you know.
31:14Yeah, I'm going to join it.
31:15£300.
31:16£300 and go.
31:17I said I'll come out on my trains bike.
31:19This is York.
31:20Well, I'm not.
31:21I'm going to put it in the van.
31:22Leave the van round the corner and pedal in on my trains bike.
31:25Like, you know, to the meat.
31:26So, I'm going to cheat a bit.
31:28£325 in the way.
31:29Good buy that.
31:30Selling it then.
31:31£350.
31:32£350.
31:33All done then.
31:34Last time looking round.
31:36£350.
31:37Hornsea.
31:39And with offers for all the bikes now in, it's down to Ange to break the news to the Henderson
31:44family.
31:47So, I've just got two bikes that are on provisional at the moment.
31:50Lot 614, the 1967 Triumph.
31:53You had a reserve of £4,000.
31:54It's done £3,500.
31:56Yeah.
31:56And then the other one is the 1953 Royal Enfield.
31:59The reserve was £1,200.
32:00It's done £800.
32:02All right.
32:03Perfect.
32:04That's all of them gone then.
32:05Bye.
32:07All of them.
32:08Oh, that's good news, isn't it?
32:10Oh, that's good.
32:11I'm happy for him.
32:12That is very unusual because almost every email I send out for people wanting to sell
32:16their bikes says that the bike market is at an all-time low.
32:19So, that's good.
32:21Happy for him.
32:22He should be doing cartwheels, shouldn't he?
32:24Because the bike market is very volatile.
32:27The old British bikes, they really are very, very difficult to rehome.
32:33But bikes in general across the board are terrific value at the moment.
32:38If you're like, shall I, shall I buy them now?
32:41Because they cannot get a lot cheaper.
32:42They really can't.
33:00You're in at £180.
33:01Look, £180 bid then.
33:03Nice size sign that.
33:04Look, £180 bid.
33:06Look, mix on it up there.
33:08You can see it.
33:09Look, £180 then.
33:11Provisionally for the first.
33:12One of my favourite cars.
33:15Alvis TE21.
33:17Three litre, straight six.
33:18Five-speed gearbox.
33:20Beautiful car.
33:22Quality car.
33:23Hand-built car.
33:24All these panels, hand-built.
33:25Bit of micro blessing on the back.
33:27Paint work unfortunately.
33:28Right colour, right condition other than that.
33:31It's going under the hammer now.
33:33I think personally, I know it's worth between £20 and £25.
33:37Award winner, cups in the back and such now.
33:40Long term ownership.
33:42I've always wanted one.
33:43I would love this car.
33:47First thing I must make crystal clear is the registration number is not going with the car.
33:52What doesn't go with the car, Ash?
33:54No point.
33:54Correct.
33:55Well done.
33:56There you go then.
33:57So the lovely car.
33:57Look, the Alvis TE21.
33:59What a fantastic looking car.
34:00Where are we going to be?
34:01You tell me.
34:02£15,000 thank you at £15.
34:04£15,250 and £5.
34:06£15,500 and £750.
34:09£15,750.
34:10What a lot of car.
34:12£15,750.
34:13£16.
34:14£16,250.
34:16£16,250.
34:17£16,250.
34:17£16,250.
34:18£16,500.
34:18Oh, good morning France.
34:19Hello there.
34:20£16,000.
34:21Bonjour.
34:21Yeah, au revoir.
34:22Depends which way you are.
34:23£16,500.
34:25£16,500 in France.
34:28It's nowhere near enough.
34:29Nowhere near.
34:30Nowhere near.
34:30It's got to be £20,000 plus.
34:33£16,500.
34:35It's provisional France at the moment.
34:36We'll speak to the owner.
34:37We'll see if we can put a deal together.
34:39I'm sure we will.
34:39There will be a deal to be done.
34:41Thank you ever so much.
34:41It is a very majestic looking car.
34:43We're at £16,500 then.
34:45We'll put you down France.
34:46Thank you ever so much for your bidding.
34:48£16,500.
34:51Provisional to France.
34:53Thank you very much.
34:55So the Alvis will soon be leaving the building.
34:59Because originally we thought that car was going to have to go for a lot more.
35:03Father thought that, yeah.
35:05But the lady and gent that own the car, Martin, he's happy to have the bid.
35:09You know, he wants the money, not the car.
35:11So, anyway.
35:12Resurrected.
35:13Everyone's happy.
35:13And he's left to Paul to cement the Entente Cordiale with the new owner.
35:19Bye now.
35:19Bye-bye.
35:21Fortunately, his English is a lot better than my French.
35:23So, he is taking the holiday in the south of France.
35:31And it may take a few days to make pay.
35:37A few weeks later, there's a new arrival in northern France.
35:41Complete with French number plates.
35:43And talking of which, the original UK registration has been kept by Martin,
35:48the former owner of the Alvis.
36:02Hello, I'm Alistair.
36:04And I'm Rachel.
36:05And we're both from Watney originally, but living down in Northumberland.
36:09They're certainly a long way from home,
36:11but this couple haven't lost their passion for all things with wheels.
36:17We've had a motorbike in the conservatory.
36:19One Christmas, I came home to find the bonnet of my car at the end of my bed.
36:22That was your dad.
36:23That was my dad.
36:24The conservatory was me.
36:25The conservatory was you.
36:26So, yeah, I'm used to it, yeah.
36:31Is the choke on this one slack?
36:33No.
36:34No.
36:35It's tightened up.
36:36I'll just slowly creep.
36:37I was surrounded by cars, motorbikes, tractors, all that growing up.
36:42So, definitely had a lot of freedom in that regard.
36:44I used to work at a bike shop in Orkney, a cycling shop.
36:48So, I went from building push bikes and then, as the usual way it goes, it escalates to things with
36:53motors.
36:55They built up a nice collection of their own.
36:57The latest of which is a 1967 Triumph Trophy.
37:02On the face of it, it's as British as tea and biscuits.
37:05But Alistair has given it an American tweak.
37:09I was always wanting to make it into a desert sled.
37:11So, I didn't want one that was either really, really original or really highly restored and immaculate.
37:18Because I'd feel bad taking off all those lovely exhausts and things like that.
37:21Because I was just wanting a desert sled, so I was wanting something that was a good base for it.
37:26For those not in the know, Hollywood heartthrob Steve McQueen was into desert sled bikes that were often adapted with
37:32high exhaust pipes for racing across California's arid trails.
37:37The pipes and the tyres make such a big difference and change to the look of the bike.
37:41These ones were the 955, so they give a nice line along the side here for the desert sled look.
37:48New tyre on the front, trial style one, all very desert sled-y.
37:52New brakes in there just improve a bit and they've actually come up really well, along with the right fitment
37:57of shocks.
37:58Well, the ones that came on it when I bought it were half an inch short, so I was buzzing
38:03the tyre over some of the big bumps.
38:06The chunky tyres was kind of the biggest difference I noticed compared to other bikes that you've had.
38:12Just with the road noise, quite as I'm used to more road tyres, road bikes.
38:17But as far as being a passenger in the back, high exhaust keeps your leg warm.
38:23Yeah, that's true.
38:30Alistair had been keeping an eye out for the right bike.
38:33And with values of older British motorcycles falling, he decided a price of three and a half grand was too
38:39good to miss.
38:42It's got something that I could play with a bit of it and have a bit of fun with.
38:45You weren't going to look and then you had a look.
38:47And then found it. And then you had to buy it.
38:49Yeah.
38:50It was a really good deal, honest.
38:54In recent months, the triumph has been on its travels, having been taken back to Orkney to be shown off
39:01at the island's classic motor show.
39:03It's always amazing the amount of stuff that comes out of the woodwork in Orkney for this show.
39:07Like for such a small population on the whole, the range of stuff that can be there.
39:12Definitely trying to keep it and use it.
39:14There's a few things I just want to tidy up with and probably through the winter, I'll take it to
39:18bits and just give everything a really good clean and update wiring and things like that.
39:24I'm not wanting to go through it too much cosmetically because I like that oily rag side of it, but
39:29just make it reliable, good, hopefully leak a little bit less, but it's a British bike so it's going to
39:35leak.
39:36You can only try so hard.
39:49You've got such a big steering wheel, so obviously it's light on the steering.
39:52The clutch is soft.
39:54It's not a racing car.
39:56You're not going to start overtaking things at 80 miles an hour cos you wouldn't want to.
39:59I like it.
40:00I think it's nice to have a radio in it cos you can't hear the engines if I think.
40:02It's a little bit like a sewing machine.
40:08On the leafy lanes of East Anglia, Gary Sutton's putting the 1963 Ford Cortina Deluxe through its paces after some
40:16repair work to make it roadworthy again.
40:20So we've got the engine running, the brakes are done, and everything's lovely.
40:24I don't mind the colour.
40:25And a lot of people buy them like this one.
40:27They turn them in the lockers cos they're two doors.
40:29You know, if you've got to paint it white.
40:33I'm just going to paint it blue.
40:34And then we see once it's done.
40:37I must just sell it.
40:39And I don't know.
40:40It's just I think people collect pictures, don't they, or coins or whatever, and I just collect this sort of
40:45stuff.
40:45I remember when I was a kid, you know what I mean?
40:49So far, so straightforward.
40:51But Gary has an itch that he just can't scratch.
40:56So what, why so many?
40:58Oh, I've got some more, but they're in the shed and I couldn't get them out in time.
41:02Sorry, you've got some more Cortina's?
41:04More Cortina's?
41:04Yeah, I've got nine altogether.
41:06So you've got nine?
41:06Yeah, I don't like, obviously, like driving them.
41:10Just part of your...
41:11Collecting them?
41:11When you was young.
41:13And I don't know, I just like them.
41:14I like the shape, I like the back, I like the size.
41:16I can just about get in them, cos I'm a bit slim, aren't I?
41:19And, yeah, I do.
41:20I like the Ford Angler and all, but they're a little bit tight again.
41:22How many Ford Anglers have you got?
41:24Three.
41:25A bit of three, yeah.
41:26I've not been big-headed or nothing.
41:28I don't drink and don't smoke, and I don't want to drink and I don't want to smoke.
41:30I've got up to 160 cars at one time.
41:32How many?
41:33160.
41:34And the only reason I knew I had 160, cos my daughters, three daughters, grasped me up to the mum.
41:39And they went in the field and in the shed and they counted them.
41:42And then they told the mum how many I got.
41:44Wish I had them now, but I've not got them now, I'm down to about wherever.
41:48I don't know, 80, 90?
41:50But the cars I've got now are better cars than what I did have.
41:52They're a little bit more money.
41:56Which would be the guilty one?
41:57No, this white one, I've had this look a lot, but they ain't a proper Lotus.
42:02I haven't driven that for about 15 years.
42:04Sorry, Gary.
42:05You've not driven it for 15 years?
42:07No, we pushed it round here, cos I knew you was coming.
42:11So the one that you've driven the most out of this lot is the one that you've perched on now,
42:16because I'm here filming you.
42:17You made me, yeah.
42:18But we won't go into that.
42:21It doesn't matter, does it?
42:23I think to go in that car now would be realistic.
42:2655, 60 is about right.
42:28You know what I mean?
42:28That's all you want to do, cos you're not...
42:30If you want to race, you can go and go and buy me.
42:32Cosworth is saying, but this is just a little beat the weight of people.
42:35Some people wave to you and people love it, don't they?
42:37My dad had one, my granddad had one, and now I've got one, and everybody's got one.
42:41Well, hang on, you've got more than one.
42:43Well, yeah.
42:44Cos I thought I don't drink a smoke.
42:48And it seems Gary's not quite reached the end of the road.
42:51When it comes to Cortina's, he's now eyeing up a mark to a state.
42:56I might even tell the wife before I buy it, see how brave I get.
42:59I'd like to come and film that.
43:01So that was it.
43:02So best thing not to tell the wives until you get it home.
43:06You lived in.
43:07And if you've really got the hump, tell it belong to your mate.
43:12For a little while.
43:14We'll own it.
43:16No.
43:39Youanu.
43:42We'll own it.
