Simon of the Mountain follows Simon, 21, who has a pretty rough dynamic with his mother. Home isn’t the safe word. It’s the place where things feel off, even when nobody says the problem out loud.

What actually feels like home is a school where Pehuén and other kids with physical and mental disabilities spend their days. That’s where Simon relaxes. Here, he isn’t performing, apologizing, or trying to fit into some invisible mold. He just belongs.

And the best part is the tone. This movie doesn’t treat disability like a mood swing or a neat lesson. It’s more like, “Okay, the world wasn’t built for you. So you improvise.” Simon finds purpose through friendship, and together they carve out small, real moments of love and happiness. No speeches. Just people making room for each other.

Simon ist Anfang 20 und merkt relativ schnell: Sein Zuhause fühlt sich nicht nach Zuhause an. Besonders nicht, wenn die Beziehung zu seiner Mutter eher Reibung als Wärme ist. Wo er hingegen wirklich er selbst sein kann, ist an einer Schule für Menschen mit körperlichen und geistigen Behinderungen. Dort freundet er sich mit Pehuén und zwei weiteren Kindern an. Und plötzlich geht es nicht mehr nur ums Durchhalten, sondern ums Dazugehören.

Der Film wirkt dabei nicht wie ein plakativer „Gib niemals auf“-Aufsatz, sondern wie Beobachtung mit Herz. Man sieht, wie Simon lernt, Freude nicht als Luxus zu behandeln. Und ja, die Welt ist für viele Dinge nicht gemacht. Das heißt aber nicht, dass sie ihnen keine Regeln liefern muss. Man erfindet sie eben selbst.
