Greek parliament recommends lifting MP immunity in EU farm subsidy fraud scandal

Nine of the 11 MPs submitted written statements to the committee, while former Rural Development Minister Kostas Tsiaras and MP Notis Mitarakis appeared in person to make their case.

00:00The Greek Parliament's Ethics Committee unanimously recommended lifting the immunity of 11 lawmakers
00:08whose names appear in a case file submitted by the European prosecutor as part of its investigation into a farm
00:16subsidy scandal.
00:17The lawmakers are from the ruling New Democracy Party, and all 11 had requested the lifting of their immunity.
00:25Nine of the 11 MPs provided explanations by submitting a written statement,
00:31while only Notis Mitarrakis and Kostas Tsiaras turned up in Parliament.
00:36Tsiaras and Mitarrakis issued a statement saying that the case must be resolved as soon as possible.
00:43The final decision is expected to take place after 19 April.
00:47The investigation looks into whether beneficiaries of agriculture subsidies had made false claims,
00:54with some making claims for land they did not own and exaggerating the number of animals on farms.
