00:00How is the EU boosting its military space capabilities?
00:07Europe is stepping up efforts to build up its military space assets driven by Russia's war
00:13in Ukraine and its decision to distance itself from its long-standing dependence on the US
00:19in the space domain. Today, European governments, armed forces and societies are making heavy use
00:25of space-enabled services including satellite communications. European countries are set
00:30to invest at least 109 billion US dollars in space capabilities by 2030. Germany has committed
00:37to invest 35 billion euros in space assets while France has increased its space defense budget to
00:4310.2 billion euros during the same period. At the EU level, the European Commission plans to invest
00:4910.6 billion euros in the new EU-secure satellite constellation, also to be delivered by 2030.
00:57European Space Agency members have also pledged 1.2 billion euros to its new dual civil-military
01:03use European Resilience from Space program. But closing the gap with the United States
01:08won't be easy. Sharing the defense burden in space could require at least an additional
01:1310 billion US dollars and achieving full autonomy may need a further $25 billion. Experts claim
01:21that full autonomy would also require even more time, extending well into the late 2030s at the earliest.
