00:02Stephen Parry is a familiar face in
00:05Federal Parliament. He served as a Liberal
00:07Senator for Tasmania for 13 years,
00:10including as Senate President. Last year
00:13he had two unsuccessful tilts at
00:15Tasmanian Parliament for the Liberals.
00:17In February he was appointed chair of
00:20the Tasmanian Heritage Council, a
00:22statutory role for $35,000 a year.
00:25Stephen Parry has certainly has the
00:29skill set over and above what would be
00:31required for this position. Recruitment for
00:34the chair position started in January
00:36last year. After failing to be elected in
00:39either of his tilts, Mr Parry sent his CV to
00:42the Government looking for opportunities. The
00:45department says it recommended the
00:46Heritage chair role be re-advertised due to
00:49the time that had passed as a result of
00:51the state election. Right information
00:53documents show five candidates were
00:56shortlisted, four of whom were women. The
00:58department recommended him and one other
01:01candidate as highly suitable, Minister
01:03Madeleine Ogilvie choosing Mr Parry.
01:06What's the truth here? We need to know
01:08what the timeline is, we need to know
01:10whose decisions were made here about
01:13re-advertising this position. In his
01:15application Mr Parry noted he was not
01:17fully across the state's heritage laws,
01:19but the department says this is not a
01:21requirement for the position. Instead the
01:24main attributes were leadership qualities
01:26and governance experience. Is there a
01:28perception of jobs for the boys in this
01:31appointment? Not from where I'm standing
01:33from in any way shape or form. Went through
01:35the normal process, this is someone who
01:37the department looked at and said yep you
01:40have excellent skills. Mr Parry will be in
01:43the role for a minimum of three years.
