Game of Wool Britain's Best Knitter S1E3
Transcript
00:03Previously the knitters tackled their second solo challenge to make iconic
00:07outfits for pets. I'm winging it. David Bowie's wig. Before going back in time to
00:14create dramatic 80s jumpers in the team knit. Oh good grief. We did it.
00:22Holger was best in show. For me Holger nailed it. Earning him the big knitter
00:27of the week badge. Stephanie found herself in the danger zone.
00:33It's just a bit messier than the rest. But ultimately Meadow was cast off.
00:38I've loved every minute of it. Leaving eight knitters remaining. Now it's week
00:48three and for our eight remaining knitters they're gonna try and get away from it
00:51all because it's holiday week. I hope they're ready because I am.
00:57Welcome to Game of Wolf.
01:07Welcome back knitters. I mean I feel like there's relaxation in the air which is good
01:11because it's holiday week. First up is your solo knit. So for this week for your
01:17individual challenge we would like you to make some amazing swimwear. So we'd like a striking
01:27and glamorous design. You can knit or crochet or a bit of both and these are going to be close
01:36fitting
01:36garments. So fit and fastenings are going to be not just important they're going to be critical. So good luck.
01:45Indeed I think fit is definitely the word that stands out there because I have some of my Team GB
01:53diving friends who are going to be coming along to try on your swimwear.
01:59Yes so I don't want to see any more of them than is completely necessary.
02:03You have 12 hours to complete this challenge so let's dive in there like swimwear. Let's get knitting.
02:14This week's solo challenge is about making a splash with small perfectly fitting design.
02:21So are you making like shorts? Yeah short shorts. Working to the exact measurements of Team GB
02:27the knitters must design swimsuits with Olympic precision fit alongside gold medal style glam.
02:35I'm hoping that the frills will sort of add a little bit of modesty.
02:42The knitters may choose to create their swimwear using knit or crochet. They can design a one-piece,
02:49bikini or trunks tailor-made to fit their model. Crocheters will work in panels manipulating basic
02:55granny squares and or varying stitch size to create shapes that contour the body. Knitters will work
03:01in the round, decreasing and increasing the number of stitches to create a form-fitting shape. Once the
03:06base garment is complete, knitters can bring the glam with embellishments such as tassels, fringing or
03:12motifs. Finally, any knitters creating trunks must create an accompanying accessory such as a bag,
03:19a belt or even a vest. So swimwear, this is a tough knit. Absolutely. There's so many directions
03:30that they can go with this design. What are you hoping for in terms of design concept? It's got to
03:36be
03:36innovative, it's got to be fun, light. Di's all about glam this week, aren't you? I'm all about glam. Yes.
03:43We want them to get the shaping right and fit is going to be huge. It's getting to that point
03:49in
03:49the competition now where we are really nitpicking, right? Really putting them to the test.
03:59Inspired by their favourite holiday destinations, this challenge is all about posing poolside in style.
04:06Do you hate it when you lose the top of your treble? Yeah. Dipti is kicking off the challenge
04:12with crochet and working up the body of her bikini using the granny square. A classic crochet motif
04:19which creates a lacy appearance and currently enjoying a retro comeback. It is simple but you
04:27don't have to make squares so I'm going to make triangles and I'm going to make the iconic triangle
04:32halter neck bikini with it. Dipti's bikini incorporates granny triangles crocheted using black and gold
04:40metallic yarn for a glam colour scheme inspired by a trip to Las Vegas with her choir. I'm a member
04:47of
04:48a choir called the Lay City Chorus. We're a competitive chorus. It's always about striving to be better
04:55and I'm taking that practice into this competition as well. Were you just talking about Vegas? Yeah,
05:02where we sung is where they hold boxing matches. All right. Yeah, it's mhoosive. So does that mean you're
05:09now officially a Vegas showgirl? No, no, no. Also taking a granny square to the next level is Holger.
05:21But rather than a triangle, Holger is using the granny stitch as a building block to create his trunks
05:26with the usual precision we've come to expect of him. The shape I'm creating here, there has been
05:33a hell of a lot of work which involves some complicated calculating. Inspired by Deja, a coastal
05:39village in Mallorca, Holger is shaping granny squares around the legs to create tight fitting trunks.
05:45His shorts will be paired with a loose fitting mesh top to bring the glam to the granny square.
05:51It's more of a posing trunk, isn't it? Let's face it. Nobody wants to go into the water with that.
05:58Lydia. Hi, Tom. How's it going? It is going. Women's bodies, there's just so,
06:04so much to it to get it to fit properly. Inspired by an Australian holiday,
06:11Lydia is attempting to knit an entire swimsuit. Her complex pattern requires shaping around the top
06:18and bottom and an intricate lace panel inserted through the centre to cinch the garment in and reflect
06:24the curves of the female body. Struth! Are you planning to make it like a tube all the way up
06:31or
06:31are you kind of going to go a bit skimpier to save on time? There's loads of shaping here so
06:35that this
06:36this bit was always the narrowest bit anyway so the top part you've got shaping where it increases but
06:42the sand bit is the skimpiest bit because I want it to look dramatic. Well it's not it's not like
06:47you're
06:48designing very basic stuff. This has got like so many stitches that you've got all kinds of different
06:52textures going on there. This competition is the first time I've been designing things and I just
06:56thought wow it's really gone from zero to 100. Well that's I mean it looks like it's coming together
07:00really nicely. Thank you so much Tom. Can't wait to see it finished. Thank you.
07:08While the knitters work their way through the bodies of their cozies, the judges will be expecting
07:13a close fit through clever shaping or via fastenings to the body. I can't believe I'm sat here agonising
07:21over the length of an Olympian's crotch. Ailsa. Hello. What have we got going on here? The
07:32inspiration behind this was a trip to Venice with my friend Kate. What are these going to be? That
07:38is going to form the top in the sort of harlequin design. Wow. So alternate the colours and lay them
07:44out.
07:45Ailsa is also making a full swimsuit like Lydia but instead of knitting she plans to crochet 21 diamonds
07:53which will then be stitched together to create a swimsuit fitted to the body. It was quite a
07:59challenge to get it to curve round the chest properly so I've got these two triangles which
08:05will join here to create a bit of a curve. Okay. Who is your competition this week do you think?
08:12Well
08:12just seeing what Lydia's up to. It's at the speed of light. With our lace it's looking good.
08:20Also taking inspiration from a recent trip but a more magical themed one is Simon. And despite
08:27last week's failed crochet attempt this week he's at it again. It's a pair of shorts. It's inspired by
08:33Disneyland Paris and the colours of the castle. We just love going there. Here's a, here's a. Yeah.
08:38Is that. Rookie crocheter Simon is boldly using free form crochet to create his golden board shorts
08:47with insect granny circles on the back to reflect those iconic mouse ears. Inspired by his time in
08:54the marines and current career as a builder he's planning to accessorize his swimwear with a utility
09:00belt for all those holiday essentials also decorated with granny circles.
09:07I'm going to kind of try and just stitch them together like just make it up as I go along.
09:13I don't crochet but I feel that you can adjust it more quickly.
09:22It's definitely, it seems like you've been on a lot of really cool holidays.
09:25Yes, I've been very, very fortunate. I got married in the Seychelles. That's crazy. Yeah,
09:32unfortunately the marriage didn't last but c'est la vie, the memories are brilliant.
09:37Stephanie is bravely ditching her knitting needles to give crochet a go with her tropical island bikini.
09:44She plans to embellish with surface crochet to add a beachy design complete with a sun, sea and even a
09:51palm tree. I see you're crocheting. Yes, I'm not a crochet person, that's not my thing but I decided
09:58to take a gamble and I've got two bust cups almost completed. Lovely. What I have learnt is that I
10:08can
10:08use a paper pattern and so this is my lower garment that will fold up into. Okay. So that's my
10:17template for
10:18when I come to do this part. Seems like a quite a big risk to take on crochet. Well,
10:23I decided that it was time for me to show some diversity. I'm going for it.
10:32By this stage in the challenge, the judges will be looking for knitters to be working up
10:36a perfect fit. Hi Tracy. Hiya. How are you doing Tracy? So the design for this, I wanted it to
10:42have
10:42something that was quite blocked in the middle so that we don't have any nipple exposure. You've made a
10:48longer stitch and then for this section you've just nicely shortened it. Yes. Creates shape,
10:54isn't it? Yes, to create a shape. Channeling memories of Isle of White holidays, Tracy is adjusting
11:00her stitch size to sculpt the cup shape for her white and gold crochet bikini. She's planning an
11:07opulent display of pink and purple fuchsias to complete the look. What are you going to do next? My idea
11:13was to do
11:14fuchsias and the flowers are going to hang. Hopefully the booby bit won't.
11:20Fuchsias are really glamorous. Lots of petals and you need to make good choices about how you're going
11:27to do that. Yeah. I would say. Fingers crossed I make the best ones then.
11:34Oh my gosh. Yeah, it's fine. We don't need to talk about it. While Tracy is using crochet flowers to
11:41bring the glam, Isaac is planning to embellish his trunks with glamorous lettering. I don't really
11:47have a lot of experience with like glamour. But yeah, I am doing some sparkly letters on the bar that
11:51say NRG for New River Gorge. Isaac is knitting board shorts with a rock climbing design on the front
11:58and sparkly letters on the back inspired by a trip to the New River Gorge in West Virginia.
12:05His accessory is a crochet chalk bag to complete the rock climbing theme.
12:11So obviously because I'm doing just the swim shorts, I have to have an additional item.
12:16And the accessory I've chosen to make is a chalk bag, which you would use for rock climbing. You
12:20could put your phone in it. You could put your keys in it. It's great for hanging by the pool.
12:24Dai and Shi, though, are going to love it.
12:31Knitters, you are halfway through this challenge. You have six hours remaining.
12:38Oh, God. I'm definitely behind. At the halfway point, knitters should be well into the body of
12:44their garments and starting to add their glamorous details. The pants, they're not quite going according
12:51to plan. I think my shaping isn't quite right. I thought that was going to be the front,
12:59but I think it might have to be the back. I've got to say, I'm worried about this challenge.
13:06I am worried.
13:14It's week three in the yarn barn, and the knitters are over halfway through their solo challenge
13:20to create glamorous swimwear modelled by Team GB.
13:25Measurement-wise, the sky is exactly the same size as me. So obviously, if the fit is bad,
13:29I don't have any excuse. Maybe we should cut that bit out.
13:34Hi, Lydia. Hi.
13:37Lydia is halfway through her complicated lace panel, which she hopes will create the perfect fit
13:42for her swimsuit. Once you start introducing a lace section to swimwear, it becomes much sexier
13:52and more glamorous. Amazing.
13:54I'm really looking forward to seeing it and the shaping as it progresses.
13:58Fit is everything.
14:00Yeah, it is critical.
14:01Keep going.
14:01Keep going, keep going.
14:02You've achieved a huge amount there.
14:05I just really wanted to make something that would make you and Sheila proud with how it fits.
14:10And sorry, I feel quite emotional.
14:13Sorry, I'm going to go red.
14:15Oh, I just, I bet nobody else gets like this over knitting.
14:21It just makes me feel incredibly emotional. So I'm crying, but I'm actually really happy.
14:29Tears of joy.
14:31It's going to pull it off. No pressure.
14:33No pressure.
14:44Simon has now completed his trunks and is using a unique method to ensure a successful fit,
14:51lacing.
14:51Oh, the boss is in.
14:53How are you doing with this?
14:55So I'm just trying to pick up a waistband and then I was going to either do like a,
15:01like a lace upside to make it a bit sexier.
15:05Wow. Okay.
15:06They're pretty risque. So I hope your friend.
15:08Oh, we're athletes. We don't mind.
15:10We don't see our bodies as anything other than a vessel to perform, to be honest.
15:15So, you know.
15:19And you can see the really sparkly glam look.
15:22I just hope it fits her.
15:24In the final hours of the challenge, knitters should be adding embellishments
15:28and creating any accessories.
15:30But novice crocheter Stephanie is yet to add any of her tropical details.
15:35The plan is to have a palm tree.
15:37Yes. I want it 3D.
15:38A nice surface 3D.
15:40Yes.
15:40Absolutely.
15:41So we will look forward to seeing what else you can add to your basic pieces.
15:47I'm interested to see what I'm going to add as well.
15:49You would like to see it too, Stephanie.
15:51While Stephanie races to complete her embellishments,
15:54Tracy has managed to complete her fuchsias, but with less flower power than she had hoped.
16:00So, Tracy, how's it going?
16:02Panicked.
16:02Panicked?
16:03Yeah, very.
16:03What are you panicking about?
16:04This is the bottom.
16:05OK, so...
16:06And so we might be exposing your friend's bottom.
16:09Have you got the flower covered?
16:12Yeah, I've got a flower covered.
16:15Might end up being a one-shoulder affair at this, right?
16:20Knitters, you have one hour remaining.
16:24I mean, at this point, what am I doing?
16:28In the remaining hour, any knitter presenting trunks to the judges
16:32must now complete the coordinated accessory to match.
16:37Holger is crocheting a string vest.
16:40Very, very open mesh, so very little substance.
16:43But once the top is done, I can work from here downwards.
16:45It's kind of a little bit sexy having a bit of a crop, though.
16:48Yeah.
16:49Not for you?
16:50Well, not for me personally, definitely.
16:52Well, you know, you never know.
16:55With Isaac's shorts taking longer than he had anticipated,
16:58he is now rushing to crochet up a chalk bag.
17:02Now, I'm making a loose representation of a chalk bag.
17:05And Simon's accessory utility belt is also far less refined
17:10than he had intended.
17:11Holger?
17:12There's no glamour in this one.
17:14My utility belt?
17:16I mean, it goes amazing with my sheep badge.
17:2030 minutes to go. Let's check in on them, shall we?
17:22Stephanie, how's it going?
17:23The palm tree is proving more difficult than I thought.
17:27I'm trying to attach the leaves to make it look like a palm tree
17:29than the black stripe.
17:31Elsa, where are you at right now?
17:32Just putting the last of the diamonds together.
17:35In the final moments, knitters have one last chance
17:39to add any last-minute details.
17:41Tracy, how's it going?
17:42It feels very glam.
17:44Dipsy.
17:45You know?
17:46Don't take that out, do they?
17:48Not much time to go.
17:50Yes.
17:50Go, go, go, go.
17:52There's no urgency here.
17:54It's coming, it's coming, it's coming.
17:55It's when I've just lost my needle.
17:58That stretch of me gets a bit longer.
18:00That's all I can do.
18:01I haven't got time.
18:04Knitters, time is up.
18:06That's 12 hours done.
18:08It's now time for Team GB to try on your swimwear.
18:12Let's hope it fits.
18:16Knitters were asked to produce glamorous form-fitting swimwear.
18:2012 hours later, it's time for eight beach-ready looks to be judged.
18:25It's been a massive risk.
18:26I've just got to trust the judges and take into account
18:29just how much I've pushed myself out of my comfort zone.
18:32I'm not a glamorous person.
18:34I don't do glamour.
18:35So to have that is completely out of my wheelhouse.
18:40Diving into our swimwear today are Team GB superstars
18:43with three Olympic medals between them.
18:45Noah Williams, Yasmin Harper and Jordan Holden.
18:51Well done, knitters.
18:53That's eight glamorous swimsuits made.
18:56And now it's time for my fellow Team GB Olympians to try them on
19:00and find out who will sink and who will swim.
19:03First up, we have Lydia.
19:11Sporting Lydia's swimsuit is Olympic bronze medalist Yasmin Harper.
19:20I love this piece.
19:22I think the word might be chic.
19:24It has a glamour because you've brought the lace panel in.
19:29I think what makes it fit well, the shaping, which is a feat of engineering.
19:36I'm proud that I've got it out and it fits.
19:40Amen.
19:41You should be proud because the fit is lovely.
19:43Thank you, Lydia.
19:44Thank you, Lydia.
19:45Next up, we have Dipty.
19:51Wow, that's amazing.
19:53The glamour of Las Vegas really shines through.
19:57The stitch work is lovely.
19:58The shaping is very elegant.
20:01Is it comfortable to wear?
20:04Would you like to tell me?
20:06Would I wear it without pants on underneath?
20:08Probably not.
20:09No.
20:10Yes.
20:12It's a little revealing, isn't it?
20:15It is.
20:15It is.
20:16I mean...
20:17Yeah.
20:21Up next is Elsa.
20:28I really love the way it's all joined together.
20:32A couple of different shapes there to fit the body.
20:36I'm unsure about here.
20:38You've got your cut threads here.
20:40And you can see them.
20:41But there's a lot of really fine crochet work.
20:45Yes.
20:45Which is absolutely excellent.
20:48Thank you very much, Elsa.
20:51Next up, we have Isaac.
20:57Modelling Isaac's shorts is double Olympic medalist and my diving partner, Noah Williams.
21:10Would you mind turning round so we can see in the back?
21:13For me, it's not quite glam enough.
21:16Yeah, that's fair.
21:16It's difficult with a subject, which is rock climbing.
21:22Yeah, to make it glam.
21:23To kind of add a lot of glam into it.
21:25So, the bag, you were aiming for a different palette.
21:31Yeah, I did want it to be sort of like a bright accompaniment because I know that the colours
21:36to the shorts themselves are relatively dull.
21:38I think it just needed to be a little bit more wow.
21:41Thank you, Isaac.
21:42Thanks, Noah.
21:43No, thank you.
21:46Next up is Stephanie.
21:56I can't help feeling that the bottom half is just a little on the skimpy side.
22:03OK.
22:04It's not quite as glamour as I would have imagined.
22:09Not all of the detailing works.
22:11Some of it is on the simple side.
22:14I'm not sure about the palm tree.
22:16OK.
22:17Even some palm fronds coming over would have been more exotic.
22:22Yes, yeah.
22:26Thank you, Stephanie.
22:28OK, Tracy, you're up next.
22:36Are we ready?
22:38Up we go.
22:39Up we through.
22:40There you go.
22:41Hi, Tracy.
22:41Hiya.
22:43So in terms of fit, the top works really well.
22:48Yeah, I'm not sure the flowers have worked.
22:51Oh.
22:51Fuchsias are really opulent with lots of petals and gorgeousness.
22:56Yeah.
22:57And then they don't quite make it for me as a fuchsia.
23:01Thank you so much.
23:06Next up is Holger.
23:13I would not have thought a string vest and a granny squares pair of trunks could be sexy
23:21and glamorous, but they are.
23:23You've manipulated them to create shape and form.
23:28It's really sculptural.
23:30It's a really good fit.
23:31Really well done.
23:33Thank you, Holger.
23:36And next up is Simon.
23:42The Olympian in Simon's shorts is Jordan Holden.
23:57So, ah, the lacing is interesting.
24:03Do you really like it?
24:04I didn't say I liked it.
24:05Oh, right, OK.
24:07So, obviously, I wanted it to be a bit more, like, chic.
24:12It's ended up with some sort of bunched up bits.
24:17Yeah.
24:17The fit is compromised.
24:26My biggest takeaway from this challenge is I'm really not a crocheter.
24:33I'm just going to shut the door on this one,
24:35move on, let's not worry about it, and move on and do my best.
24:46With eight swimsuits now packed away for the holidays, the knitters have one more chance to
24:52prove themselves and avoid the cast-off, and for this team challenge, they'll want a seat.
24:59This week for our team challenge, Di and Sheila would love for you to work in pairs
25:05to crochet a deck chair.
25:10Wow.
25:11What?
25:12Yeah.
25:13A deck chair, cornerstone of British seaside summer.
25:18And because this is our first only crochet challenge, we have enlisted some help from an amazing crochet judge.
25:29Her designs have been worn by Justin Bieber, and she's an expert in high-end contemporary floral design.
25:36Please welcome Janie Crowe.
25:46Hi, guys.
25:47I really feel that crochet has the potential to be an amazing platform for creativity,
25:53amazing colour palettes, and I just can't wait to see what you all come up with.
25:57Good luck.
25:59This week, we would like you, in your pairs, to crochet a traditional deck chair sling.
26:07We would love to see a striking holiday design. Practical, functional, and above all, securely fitted,
26:18because while we won't be having a wee seat, our friend Tom here will.
26:25Yes, I don't want to fall through. As always, the team challenge is judged blind,
26:30so I'm now going to ask Di, Sheila and Janie to leave the yarn behind.
26:36Good luck.
26:38Now, for your teams, you're going to be working in pairs. So in team one, we have Holger and Isaac.
26:47In team two, we have Lydia and Tracy.
26:52Yeah. In team three, we have Stephanie and Dipty.
26:58And in team four, we have Elsa and Simon.
27:03For this challenge, you are going to have eight hours.
27:09Let's get hookin'.
27:17Each of the teams have been given a simple deck chair frame to create a holiday-inspired design.
27:23It's always the internal question, how do those things fold and unfold?
27:26Once they have crocheted together their seaside sling, they must attach it to the frame successfully.
27:31Do you think squares are varying sizes and then putting them together? I think so.
27:37Teams have a choice of three cotton yarns for the sling, a thick cord yarn, a fine recycled yarn and
27:44a soft tape yarn.
27:46Let's make sure we a-deck the competition. A-deck them all.
27:51A-deck chair.
27:53Well, Tom, can I just say deck chairs are iconic.
27:57Yeah, well, that's fair enough.
27:59Absolutely.
27:59I mean, are there stitches that work better for a deck chair?
28:03Probably the densest crochet stitch is a double. It's the sturdiest crochet stitch, but the one I'm concerned they might
28:10use is a treble.
28:12So it's the same process through the stitch, but this time I've got three loops on my hook instead of
28:17two.
28:18So then it's through two, and through the final two.
28:24And that then gives you this gap, you see, the risky gap.
28:28Yeah.
28:29Then it's going to be really stretchy.
28:31And stretchy can be a disaster when it comes to sitting down in a deck chair.
28:36Yeah, yeah.
28:36It needs to be firm.
28:37I feel like a granny square is very much a classic in the crochet world.
28:41Do you think that's a good idea to do within a deck chair?
28:44The granny square has its place, but I'm hoping that they push it a little bit out.
28:49Yes.
28:49I want something different.
28:53One of us starts from the top, one of us starts from the bottom.
28:56Teams must select a yarn and a stitch that are up for the job.
29:00Too stretchy, and I could end up bottomed out.
29:03That's the technical diving term for hitting the floor.
29:05That's the yarn that we liked, the thicker one, which will grow quicker.
29:09Yeah, that will be all right on there, I think.
29:11Simon and Ailsa are first to select the thick cord yarn.
29:15First thing I can think of is the little beach huts.
29:19Yes.
29:20We could do a textured sort of stitch here for the sand.
29:25For their deck chair, Simon and Ailsa have come up with a classic beach hut design,
29:31using the dense shell and double crochet stitches for the base,
29:34with seaside motifs stitched on as extra details.
29:39Stephanie and Dipty have also opted for the thickest yarn.
29:43We could do a cocktail, something like this, and we could have an umbrella in it.
29:48Yeah.
29:49How's that?
29:49Yeah.
29:51Stephanie and Dipty have concocted a Cocktails on the Beach design.
29:55They will connect cord yarn granny squares for the sling,
29:58before adding their crochet cocktail motif.
30:02This is actually lovely.
30:04Is it?
30:04Yeah, I like it. I really like the feel of it.
30:07Tracy and Lydia have gone for the soft and stretchy tape yarn.
30:11What stitch is going to provide the best security for the base of it?
30:16I think we'd do something plain, so keep that fairly basic,
30:19and then flower the whole thing.
30:21It should transport you to the Hawaiian beach.
30:23It's going to be all about the embellishments.
30:26Their Hawaiian beach theme incorporates a stripy sling
30:30embellished with an abundance of tropical flowers.
30:34The amount of effort that you're putting into working with this,
30:37we could make something faster with the...
30:39Slimmer one?
30:39Yeah.
30:40Yeah.
30:41Holger and Isaac are the only team to choose the fine cotton yarn.
30:45I mean, it could be something as simple as those cones
30:48that are bound from newspaper with the chips in.
30:50Yeah, I think what we could do is make the background the classic stripes.
30:55A cone of chips is on the menu for the boys.
30:58They will be using Intarsia to crochet their chip design into their sling,
31:03while using the thinnest yarn.
31:04This means a total of 6,000 stitches will be needed to complete this intricate design.
31:11We're planning on splitting the whole thing essentially down the middle.
31:15It's easier to split it this way because then the join in the motif will have to be done carefully,
31:20but the join in the stripe will be hidden.
31:22We're going to have an uphill struggle to beat the crochet queens over there, but as long as you don't
31:27come last.
31:33Two hours into the challenge and the base of the deck chair slings are taking shape.
31:38It's really like fighting, isn't it? It is. Working with this yarn.
31:41Yeah.
31:43Dipty, Stephanie. Hi, Ty.
31:44How are we doing? Coming. Do you fancy a cocktail?
31:47I would love a cocktail. What have you got on offer?
31:49Um, Granny's on the Beach.
31:51Granny's on the Beach. That's a good one.
31:54How's it going?
31:55So, this is going to be the sling of our cover.
31:58It is growing very quickly to see it come together,
32:00and especially with the Granny Square, they just grow in all directions for every round.
32:04It gets bigger and bigger and bigger.
32:05I feel reasonably confident. Do you think so?
32:08I think we've got a plan and we know what we're doing.
32:12It's looking good. Quick.
32:14Ailsa and Simon are the only team doubling the length of the sling to fold it over.
32:19All other teams plan to just attach one panel to the frame.
32:23Ailsa and Simon. Hello.
32:26We've got the main sling finished.
32:29But we're just going to adjust that slightly,
32:31because what we're going to do is we're going to extend it all the way round and turn it into
32:34a tube.
32:35So, when it sits on a deck chair, you've got two layers of fabric,
32:38and that will really feel supportive.
32:43Hookers!
32:46You're halfway through this challenge.
32:48That is four hours until you need your deck chair ready.
32:51I'm off on holiday.
32:52Oh, no!
32:56In the remaining four hours, knitters must join together their slings with enough strength
33:02to pass the sit test.
33:04That's holding.
33:05And also add any final embellishments.
33:07I'm doing a cocktail glass and then the umbrella that goes in the top of it.
33:13I'm doing some free-form crochet flowers.
33:16I've started to add a bit of detail to these. That's just a wee anchor.
33:20But having chosen the finest yarn...
33:23It's taking so long.
33:25..Holga and Isaac are beginning to fall behind.
33:28You're planning on doing the whole deck chair in this thin yarn?
33:32Um...
33:32All going according to plan?
33:34That was the original plan.
33:35Sure.
33:36Probably not.
33:37The motif will be done and then it will be finished off in whatever gets it finished.
33:43Well, I'm going to leave you both to it.
33:46You seem very focused and very, you know...
33:48Stressed?
33:49That's what you're looking for?
33:50I wouldn't say stressed.
33:51How can you be stressed when you're crocheting and knitting?
33:53That's what you do to relieve stress, right?
33:55Have you been here for the last two weeks?
33:57Mm-hmm.
33:58Well, I'll leave you to it.
34:00Bye, Tom.
34:01Bye.
34:03I mean, Holga and Isaac have taken a huge risk with going with a thin yarn because
34:08although they can work slightly quicker with it, it grows so slowly.
34:14So they are probably the team that's worrying me the most at the moment.
34:18We're going to sew together the two strips as soon as they have a length that we can work with.
34:26While Holga and Isaac struggle to join their complicated design together...
34:31What do I do? Just give it a go?
34:32..it's the moment of truth for Dipti and Stephanie.
34:39I'm in, but I'm sinking.
34:43Right.
34:45It's got a lot more gift to it than we were totally expecting at all.
34:50I don't know what to do.
34:53I think we'll undo the beach end and...
35:00...cut.
35:03I think we'll do it.
35:30Finally completed.
35:32You know, it's going to be a weak spot in the fabric of the deck chair.
35:35But it gives more substance quicker, doesn't it?
35:38But Stephanie and Dipti need to fix their oversized sling before they can even fit it to the frame.
35:44Get rid of that one.
35:46Do it, Stephanie, because I can't.
35:48Yes?
35:49Yeah, do it.
35:51It breaks my heart to cut it, but I appreciate it breaks your heart, Angel.
35:59Knitters, you have one hour until I am going to be sitting on your deck chairs.
36:06The method I'm using is what's commonly known as pure and utter desperation.
36:12In the last hour, knitters must attach their sling securely to the frame.
36:17We're chaining the bottom up to the top, attaching it straight to the wood.
36:21And then we can do the same with the sides.
36:24There'll be no sit test because...
36:25I want to sit in it.
36:26No, I'm not sitting in this and potentially break it.
36:30Oh, yeah.
36:32Can someone grab me a pina colada, please?
36:35Oh, look at the flowers coming together.
36:38The black outline on the Stephanie's stem and the wine glass make it pop from the surface.
36:44This whole thing's going to look great. I know it is.
36:46What about that?
36:48Yeah.
36:48Yeah.
36:48We ice cream for Tom.
36:50Lovely.
36:51There's ice cream!
36:52We come!
36:54Hookers, hooks down, your time is up.
36:58The holiday, is it just beginning or is the holiday very much over?
37:05Look at that!
37:06That's cute.
37:07Yeah.
37:07All ye doubters.
37:10Yeah, it looks very stretchy, guys.
37:15I think that looks really nice, actually.
37:17Yeah.
37:18Yeah.
37:18I think we've done a marvellous job.
37:20Well done.
37:24In just eight hours, that's four classic crochet deck chairs complete.
37:29Holiday mode activated.
37:33Well done, hookers.
37:35Four deck chairs completed.
37:37It is now time to hear what Di, Sheila and Janie think of your amazing creations.
37:42So, we'll start with team number one.
37:50Oh, wow.
37:54I like the flowers, but what I'm not so keen on is the placement of them.
37:58Yeah.
37:59This curvature.
38:00I think that's probably happened because of the way it's been tied at the back.
38:04Absolutely.
38:05It's nice to see some good stitch definition here, though.
38:08This is like a cluster of three stitches that gives it that nice...
38:13It's almost sort of like a beach.
38:14Yes.
38:15And I guess the sea, so that's really nice.
38:18I guess now is the time to see whether it'll hold my weight.
38:23I feel like I should do a gentle switch into...
38:26Oh, my gosh. Oh, my gosh.
38:27Okay.
38:29Oh, the bungee hammock.
38:30Yay!
38:31It's actually quite comfortable, you know.
38:33Oh, very good.
38:34Very good.
38:35Well, there we go.
38:36Right, on to the next one.
38:37Yay.
38:42Let us know what you think.
38:43Oh, wow.
38:44Goodness me.
38:45Oh, this is really nice.
38:46This is a trip to the seaside.
38:48So, they've used that thicker, that really rope-y yarn.
38:51Yeah.
38:52This one is extra specially functional.
38:55Oh, I like it.
38:57Fantastic stitch work.
38:58Yeah, yeah.
38:59So, it's really nice that they've used a stitch
39:01that is evocative of a shell as well.
39:02Yeah, it's really nice.
39:04There are some great small details in it, aren't there?
39:07Right, here we go. You're safe.
39:09Got my ice cream.
39:10Oh!
39:12Oh!
39:13How does that feel, Tom?
39:14Yeah.
39:15If, I mean, it's holding my weight.
39:17Sure.
39:18It's comfortable.
39:19It's fit for purpose.
39:20Yeah, it is.
39:21Yeah, it's fit for functionality.
39:22Yeah.
39:22Yeah, absolutely.
39:29Here we go.
39:30Deck chair number three.
39:32Oh!
39:33Oh, my goodness.
39:34There we are.
39:35Wow.
39:35Yes, some very interesting extra touches.
39:41And it's one panel.
39:42It doesn't go round the back.
39:43No.
39:44So, it's only attached with the cord, with a sewn cord.
39:51Yeah.
39:52Granny squares are quite a basic stitch,
39:54so it's just a treble stitch.
39:56Yes.
39:57Yes.
39:57I would have liked the edging to be neater.
40:00Yeah.
40:01I'm never sure about outlining things in black.
40:04You lay yourself open to having to do a really, really neat job.
40:09Yeah.
40:09I'm not quite sure about the cocktail glass.
40:13I thought at first it was a fish.
40:16Yeah.
40:17Here we go.
40:18Right, let's get into this.
40:20Ooh.
40:21Ooh.
40:22A low squat.
40:25Yeah.
40:26It's just about holding.
40:28There's definitely a wee bit of a droop there.
40:30It did have a lot more give in it than the others.
40:32Yes, yeah.
40:34And here we have our final deck chair.
40:40Wow.
40:40We love it.
40:41Ooh.
40:43Oh, so this is the final yarn.
40:45It's chips, isn't it, in a cone?
40:47In some newspaper.
40:49Yeah.
40:49Newspaper, fab.
40:50From a technical point of view, that's really...
40:53It is.
40:53..really good.
40:55Intarsia crochet.
40:57Yeah.
40:57So, that's a really complicated technique.
41:00I can't help feeling they've done a really good...
41:03They have.
41:04They have.
41:05It really evokes the chips in a cone, doesn't it?
41:08They've gone from...
41:09They've gone double crochet...
41:11They've gone double and they've gone two...
41:11..into trebles.
41:12Trebles.
41:13Yeah.
41:13So, the fact that it trebles here at the bottom...
41:16Mm.
41:16..it's going to be a bit loose there.
41:19Yeah.
41:19Using the final yarn was pretty brave.
41:23What I am a bit concerned about is this line where they've sewn it down here.
41:27When you're away from it, you don't notice it.
41:29But up close, you can really see that line.
41:32No, you're absolutely right.
41:33Um...
41:33That is a shame.
41:34Yeah.
41:35Shall we try it out?
41:36Yeah.
41:37Yeah.
41:37Are you ready?
41:38OK.
41:39Uh, here we go.
41:41Whoa!
41:46Are you...
41:47..hitting?
41:48Oh!
41:48I am on the floor.
41:51Oh, my goodness.
41:52Here we go.
41:52OK.
41:53Whoa!
41:55Yeah.
41:55Oh, I wish I...
42:03Time for Janie to reveal the results.
42:06In fourth place is the granny square, this one.
42:13We think the whole granny square thing is a bit safe.
42:17In third place is the lovely cone of chips.
42:22Oh, guys, I really...
42:24I love...
42:24I love this.
42:25It's just such a shame it failed the function test.
42:28In second place is this one with the stripes.
42:35So then the first place, which is very exciting,
42:38with the beach huts and the sunshine and the seagull,
42:41it fitted the purpose.
42:43It didn't sag when Tom sat in it,
42:46and it just evokes everything about seaside,
42:48so we loved it.
42:50Well done, everyone.
42:52Yes, congratulations to Simon and Elsa.
42:57I know they get worse every time, don't they?
43:02I think I was holding out a little bit of hope
43:05that maybe it would hold, but, yeah, that was pretty disappointing.
43:10Zowers did actually perform.
43:13You could sit on it and your bum didn't touch the floor.
43:16So from that perspective, I was very, very disappointed.
43:21This week was completely on the fly.
43:23I am really hoping that the group challenge has saved my bacon.
43:30What a holiday week.
43:31I mean, we've had deck chairs, we've had swimsuits, bikinis, you name it.
43:36So who do you think has done particularly well this week?
43:40It's been a great week for Lydia.
43:44I mean, that one piece was pretty spectacular.
43:47Lots of stitches and techniques.
43:49I loved it. I absolutely loved it.
43:53We also did love Elsa's piece.
43:55That was spectacular.
43:59So who is in danger this week of being cast off?
44:03Stephanie.
44:05She failed on the deck chair challenge.
44:08That's where we get down to the design skills and she doesn't execute them terribly well.
44:15They're not clear.
44:16Her solo effort was also not very inspiring.
44:23Isaac, in the group challenge, structurally getting it wrong.
44:29Mm.
44:29In his solo challenge, glamour wasn't entirely present.
44:37Simon is also at risk because of the solo challenge.
44:42Yes.
44:42I think his planning went completely out of the window and he was winging it basically.
44:48He was.
44:49This is a tough decision and I'm glad that I have nothing to do with it and that it is
44:54on YouTube.
44:55Thank you, Tom.
45:03Welcome knitters to our knitting circle.
45:07Now is time to find out who's knit big and who is going to be leaving the yarn bar.
45:15We have chosen this week's big knitter and it's Lydia.
45:31And I think we all know what's coming next.
45:35So can we give Lydia a big bow?
45:38And here is your sheet bag.
45:42Congratulations, congratulations.
45:47Now, of course, this is a competition and it gets harder and harder every week.
45:53But we have to cast someone off.
45:56And the person being cast off this week is...
46:05Stephanie.
46:07Oh, no, no, it's fine.
46:11It's all good.
46:12Thank you very much indeed.
46:14It's been fabulous.
46:16Thank you so much.
46:17You've done such an amazing job, honestly.
46:18We will miss seeing your smiling face.
46:22Well done.
46:23You're welcome.
46:25I flippin' hope I've staked my ground in the competition now.
46:29And, you know, actually, to be fair, even if I go out next week, there was one week
46:33where what I did was the best, and that, for me, is fantastic.
46:38I believe in the competition, absolutely gutted.
46:41It's been great fun just to experience knitting something different.
46:46If you'd have asked me to knit a deck chair, I would never have known where to start.
46:49All I can say to the knitters here is do your best and just put love in every stitch.
46:58Next time, it's playtime in the yarn barn.
47:01I'm done, baby.
47:03As the knitters crochet kids' fancy dress.
47:06It looks a little bit like a toilet seat.
47:09Honestly, it's got to the point where I'm just delirious.
47:12And go wild with wall hanging.
47:16Have you had a chance to look and see what the other team is doing?
47:19We're not interested in the losing team.
47:22I mean, the competition's getting real now.
47:24How long have we got?
47:25It doesn't matter.
47:26Just go as fast as you can.
47:27OK, OK.
47:53First time, I'm got south, especially here.
47:54I'm in the mouth and I call back.
47:54All right, yeah.
47:54What are you doing?
47:54The tane asfac hai isumble.
47:54See you, where is your base chair, Jeff CS is very steady.
47:54You mentioned the relationship with boyfriend.
47:54Here's the receptionist, friends, the woman's living here.
47:55Height่ฆ‹.
47:55So you can tell me that I want to take care of in the land.
