00:01Malaysia has lost one of its most beloved and iconic broadcast journalists.
00:06Karam Singh Walia, a veteran TV3 reporter widely regarded as a pioneer of environmental journalism,
00:12passed away at his residence in Klang in the early hours of Monday morning.
00:15He was 66.
00:17Born in 1959 in Teluk Intan, Karam began his broadcast journalism career with TV3 in 1995.
00:24For nearly two decades, he became one of the most familiar and trusted faces on Malaysian television
00:30before retiring in 2014 due to health reasons.
00:35To millions of Malaysians who grew up watching Bulletin TV3, Karam was unmistakable.
00:41His delivery firm, authoritative and deeply human.
00:51But it was perhaps his signature closing, a poem that ended every one of his reports,
00:56that etched him permanently into the nation's memory.
01:00Tributes have poured in from across the country.
01:02Among the most heartfelt came from Thevanath Gunasekaran,
01:06who once had the privilege of interviewing Karam for a master's assignment.
01:09He recalled in a Facebook post that throughout their conversation,
01:14Karam kept returning to one theme, unity.
01:17And he shared a verse that has stayed with Thevanath ever since.
01:20He was a strong plant because of body.
01:23He was a strong plant because of the root.
01:26He was a strong plant because of its soil.
01:29He was a strong plant because of the kingdom.
01:34Karam leaves behind his wife, Bhagwant Kawursidhu – three children and four grandchildren.
01:40His funeral will be held this afternoon at the Simpang Lima Hindu crematorium.
