00:04come on Fletchers we're heading into our fifth year of farming in the stunning Peak District
00:10here we go and we're making big plans from our new HQ being back at the farms 24-7 it
00:22just feels like the best feeling in a caravan it's pretty bougie alongside our four kids
00:28who are each carving their own path as young farmers to any of my Jacob give birth I've got
00:36to do it this year we introduced new breeds to the farm I'm gonna get a new flock of hens
00:43I'm not even telling Calvin I'm just doing it I forgot how much I love pigs and continue our
00:53journey into arable farming it's my wife up we've grown in confidence as farmers I will
01:00not be defeated embracing the fun and chaos and together we're working hard to live our life to
01:13the farm that was this week on our farm Marnie and her brothers take a very different approach to
01:34helping during tupping season how do you know what day now while you're asking really intelligent
01:45questions your brothers are drinking water from the drain as our journey as bee farmers continues Liz
01:54shows us how it's done when she tries her hand at butchery now that's a man's steak oh my god
02:00look at that
02:02that is a his and hers you've always been the man in this relationship aren't you
02:09and we have a new mum on the farm as ginger's puppies finally arrive this one's a big lad what
02:16are you
02:39the rhythm of the seasons takes us through periods of change on our farm and as autumn turns to winter
02:45our farmland gets a chance to rest and we can find time for other work
02:57I'll have to get you some goggles
03:01today our old stable block is undergoing its next transformation with a little help from farmhand Josh
03:07I'm almost like this it's really about delegation and who's right for what job
03:10I don't think you'd be better on the ladder though you've got to delegate the right jobs to the right
03:17people and I'm not getting on that ladder we're using the barn as our hub for events a place where
03:24all Liz's ideas can come to life now that we can use this as an event space it changes a
03:30lot for us
03:31and what I love about it is it can become so many things
03:40this space is going to be perfect for our farmers market in a few months time but before we get
03:46there
03:46there's a special winter event to plan for Christmas
03:51the whole place is going to become Santa's grotto and you'll come through a maze and this which is
03:57our old tack room for the horses it's going to become the grotto so you've got to really visualize
04:04it it's not going to look like this you know when we sat at home with a piece of paper
04:11and I could say
04:12these things seem a really good idea and it never seems as hard as it actually is
04:18but it is it's a huge operation Christmas we've got the strength to do it who the hell drilled these
04:27in
04:29oh my god oh one down ten to go over six days we're inviting families in to give them a
04:44taste of
04:44farming life where they can pull on their wellies and get some fresh country but turning a working
04:51farm into a winter wonderland is no small feat I made a spreadsheet of the night and there's
04:58it's color-coded I've not even told you this yet Josh what's that you've only got about four
05:03or five jobs the majority is red which is me we've got to organize generators different
05:09obviously having an electrical safety we've got to have first aid considerations fire marshals
05:15you've got to consider things like that food hygiene all the paperwork really risk assessments
05:19insurance there's all of that so yeah it's a bit of a team effort hello lad oh thank you
05:27mate um so what are we doing well but now we're just putting up the last of these lights and
05:36the
05:37kids can all do their bit too going up a ladder is a two-man job you always have to
05:42have somebody next
05:43to you to hold the ladder it's called footing the ladder so daddy will foot it and then I'll watch
05:48you
05:48like that and when daddy says stop you stop that'll do now I just think you're only halfway up there
05:56what does it feel like does it feel good all right come back down then even daddy gets scared up
06:03there
06:04good lad has he been up a ladder
06:08we're only about eating chickens all right then mate
06:14milo's really grown in confidence this year and keen to get involved with the jobs around the farm
06:18so once he's fed the chickens and we finish putting up the lights
06:23christmas lights done there's a few more yet but that's that one done that's the worst one done
06:29nice and neat the next job to do for the christmas event is something that milo can really leave his
06:35mark on why don't we screw that in there and that's an arrow isn't it come here that's an arrow
06:44pointing that way and you could write on it santa this way and we could put it next to santa's
06:50grotto
06:51because that's going to be santa's house so what we need to do get you a drill and a couple
06:56of screws
06:57so we can screw that in the farm is a great classroom for the kids and we want them to
07:02all
07:02grow up learning how to fix things solve problems and take pride in a job well done they've got to
07:09know where santa is if not they'll just leave they're just going to say oh maybe i won't come because
07:15there's no santa bye so this is called a drill bit and the drill bit goes in here so we'll
07:24do one
07:24there and we'll do one there okay all right then once you do put one hand on press down firmly
07:36good lad right there and then this one so going first we are pressing it get in put a bit
07:45of
07:45pressure on you go steady first steady right now go good lad boom is that finished
08:02you need to carry on painting it but there's your sign the santa's grotto still paint it
08:13there we go it's always great to get the kids involved they can be really helpful and as a kid
08:23i do say so myself i'd be my dad's little helper he'd be fixing cars on the drive
08:28um mechanic and i'd be passing tools and but i didn't have this sort of environment so i mean
08:34i'd have absolutely love this so you've gone fully gold then yeah yeah not red i'm gonna do it all
08:43gold right okay good work there so we're gonna let this dry yeah and then next we need to find
08:48black pen to write santa this way yeah well done mate good work that good with that drill aren't you
09:17we're used to new arrivals on the farm but last night liz was watching over a birth a little closer
09:23to home we've had a long night and ginger started signs of labor she was just panting and panting
09:33for hours and hours and hours then she was just circulating the room like so restless didn't know
09:40what to do with herself so i slept on the sofa she's made a little bed in this box so
09:48i slept here next
09:49to her and then about five o'clock this morning she finally delivered the first pop and she was amazing
09:57it was fascinating to see it was like she just knew what to do she knew to she knew to
10:04eat the umbilical
10:05cause she had to eat the placenta she had to lick them they fed instantly and then the next pop
10:11came
10:12about 15 minutes after she did the exact same thing and then about an hour later the third pop came
10:20and max and milo managed to watch it and then once ever we got everyone to school
10:25got back and she delivered the fall
10:29i can't believe it oh is that just the cutest thing
10:35so we have another mum of four in the house and we're so pleased ginger was able to deliver them
10:41all naturally
10:41this one's a big lad what are you boy
10:49they're all so different
10:54oh you want to be warm don't you with your mum
10:58there you go
11:01we've witnessed countless births yet it never ceases to amaze us just how instinctive motherhood
11:06is in every animal and ginger was no different
11:10she has been amazing during this pregnancy she's been very clingy which we don't mind
11:17she's not left my side and the pups they just get right under her it was amazing because the first
11:24pup was born and she started like rolling her neck on the pup to warm him up and i've never
11:30seen
11:31i was thinking she was going to crush him but she was just new instinctively to keep him warm
11:36she's done amazing no vet calls no emergencies just calm quiet
11:44and very very well
11:47i woke kelvin up when the first pup came and i said
11:49kelvin the first pup's been and he looked at me and went has it and he went back to sleep
11:56so it was just me and ginger
11:59and it was so nice
12:03and i felt like she trusted me although she probably had no idea what's happening
12:07i felt like she knew that she was she could relax and it was just me and her it was
12:12really quiet
12:13i kept the lights really dim
12:17a bit like hypnobirthing really
12:20did a bit of hypnobirthing with ginger
12:23it worked didn't it we've had pups at the busiest time of the year we open for christmas in about
12:32six days
12:34so i'm going to be out there entertaining people knowing that my house is probably going to get
12:39trashed and nibbled and my shoes will be done and the feet of the sofa is probably getting chewed on
12:45so we'll have to think a bit of a plan i don't think you'll be in this box for a
12:48long time
12:50i'm so tired
12:52i've literally been awake all night
12:54i've been awake all night
12:58right ginger
12:59keep your babies warm
13:02give you some space to have a lot of sleep
13:19work on our christmas event is underway so there's no chance for liz to catch up on any sleep
13:24she's off to pick up some more paint and decorations while josh and i are getting stuck in
13:29to some heavy lifting we've got an idea for a way for families to find santa's grotto
13:35and for that we need straw bells
13:37started josh
13:42that'll be about 500 kilo will it
13:44i think i've just made myself redundant really
13:49it's normally my job that
13:52so we've got a straw delivery today
13:54obviously
13:55we managed to make straw with our harvest of the oats but it just wasn't quite enough so
14:01we've had to bring extra straw in and we're using that as a bit of a decorative feature
14:07so the straw bales are going to provide a bit of a maze if you like in santa's workshop
14:14it's amazing what you can do with a few straw bales
14:17liz has already given us clear instructions of how she wants the bales so then it'll be up to me
14:22and josh today
14:22firstly to offload them and then to put them in place and actually create the maze today so
14:28we've chalked out already on the floor roughly where we think they're gonna go
14:31and then no doubt liz will be back later to tell us what we've done wrong
14:3620 bales in total
14:37next job is getting them into place and bringing liz's straw maze to life
14:42and then it's my turn behind the wheel
14:46this is like a you bet challenge i've got to move this tool cabinet without
14:50letting that coke bottle
14:53fall over
14:54that was one of my favourite shows as a kid
14:57i actually wrote into it once
14:59and then never replied
15:16it's time to take shape yeah we're getting visibly looking very different
15:24josh i reckon it's best you try and get up here we'll walk it across
15:28yeah i'll try
15:32you ready
15:32yeah let's go over here to end
15:36i'm walking in middle
15:39all right
15:41all right there
15:42yeah about even now we're looking at it
15:46with the bales in place it's time to call the bus and hopefully get the sign off
15:50you okay
15:51right i'm going to show you what we've done so far let me know your thoughts
15:55so this is the entrance
15:58i don't know who that guy is up there but
16:00should i do the walk now as i'm a guest
16:04yeah so you put wood across there
16:06we've put a wood ceiling on we've just done the first one
16:08so i would be coming through like this
16:11yeah there's going to be a wood ceiling that you can i'm sure put fairy lights on
16:15then there'll be a bale there
16:17so at this point we'll turn
16:20yeah
16:20there'll be another bale there
16:22yeah
16:23we'll then come round
16:25and go up
16:26and the christmas tree the christmas tree will be under the chandelier
16:29yeah
16:30with a wall at the back so you can't see beyond
16:33and then you'd go in now
16:34to go and see santa
16:36so how do you think what's is that all right
16:39yeah that's perfect
16:42sorry
16:42exactly what i wanted yeah
16:45did you get that
16:47have you passed out
16:48yeah i'm still just i can't get my head around you
16:51i've done something and you've not yeah i can't believe that
16:53you've actually just said it's perfect and you've not given me anything
16:56you've done anything wrong
16:57all right see you in a bit
16:58all right bye
17:03well that's an exclusive for you guys
17:05lizzie's happy
17:06and what i've done was spot on
17:08there wasn't a single no
17:10wasn't a single director's no
17:11can't believe it
17:12never happened before
17:14it must be you josh
17:16normally if that would have been me on my own
17:17i should have said no
17:18move that
17:18you've done that wrong
17:19that's wrong
17:21she said you've done it
17:22exactly how i wanted it
17:24all right then
17:25i'll get on with the work
17:27can we get me down
17:28uh yeah i'll get you that ladder
17:47alongside prepping for the event
17:49we still have the farm and our other business to run
17:51and with christmas on the horizon
17:53we've had a rush on orders for our products
17:56this is how organized kelvin is
17:58so you've got your mugs your gin your flowers your candles
18:03your boxes you are
18:05a girl's dream when it comes to that
18:07but this is orderless
18:09because if it was up to you
18:12it'd just be
18:12you wouldn't know where anything was would you
18:15they're like looking for kids socks in the morning
18:17whereas i like to have things
18:18so you've got you know where everything is
18:20everything has a place
18:21and then when it when you're packing it makes it a little bit quicker and a bit easier
18:26milo is on quality control today
18:28but first
18:29he needs to sort a special order to gift
18:31this christmas
18:32oh do you want to make your teacher a parcel
18:34you can do
18:35yeah
18:36what do you want to give her a candle
18:38what do you want me to write
18:39you
18:40you
18:43have
18:45been
18:46a
18:49amazing
18:53kiss kiss kiss
18:54do you want to write love milo
18:58yeah
19:00that is really cute
19:04oh
19:06I think I know
19:08I mean you too
19:10don't forget
19:14oh milo
19:18look at that
19:19you are
19:20that is so kind
19:22so I'm on admin duties today
19:24I'm
19:24if you've emailed
19:26it'll be me that's
19:27emailing you back
19:28I think we just put team fletched
19:30to make it look like we're a big
19:31proper organisation
19:32but really it's just
19:33just us
19:34it's just us two
19:36but as I keep reminding myself
19:37you've got to start somewhere
19:38haven't you
19:39Jeff Bezos started in a garage
19:40I think
19:41oh we're on
19:42oh
19:43get the orders
19:44are we going to box you up
19:46yeah
19:46and send you away
19:47yeah
19:48then we better put a returns label in there
19:52so what we do milo
19:54we open them that way
19:56so that then
19:57you can just grab the blanket
19:59that you need
20:01okay
20:02and that way
20:03they stay nice and neat
20:04look at that
20:06there's nothing better
20:07than getting blankets
20:08fresh from the packet
20:11just so soft
20:14and they smell
20:16so good
20:19making our own
20:20Fletcher's products
20:21has become a big part
20:22of what we do now
20:23and like most farms
20:25these days
20:25we've thought creatively
20:27and adapted
20:27to keep the farm thriving
20:30like Kelvin says
20:31it is just me and Kelvin
20:32doing this
20:34and it's funny
20:35that the blankets
20:36came
20:37because it cost us
20:39to shear the sheep
20:40so we were trying to work out
20:41how could we get money
20:42for that
20:43to put back into the farm
20:44and that is making the blankets
20:46and this whole
20:48diversifying
20:49is what keeps the farm running
20:50and I think that's what
20:51farmers are
20:52having to do more and more
20:54because
20:56they are struggling
20:57farmers are struggling
20:58and that's why we've got
20:59the holiday light
21:00that's why farmers open cafes
21:01and that in itself
21:04has a cost
21:04a level of things
21:05you need to know
21:06another level of stress
21:07and what it does is
21:09when we're doing this
21:10it takes us away
21:10from the farm
21:11but we've got to spin
21:11all these plates
21:13to keep the farm going
21:14the main thing is
21:15that we love it
21:16we really do love it
21:17but yeah
21:18it's funny how the farm
21:19is the heart of everything
21:21but it's these little
21:22side hustles
21:23that are keeping it all going
21:25the products are proving
21:27more popular
21:27than we imagined
21:28and we've been blown away
21:30by the demand
21:30so while we show Milo
21:32the ropes
21:32Josh is checking on the flop
21:34and it's a bit great
21:35to think that maybe
21:36one day
21:37Liz and I might get a chance
21:38to sit back
21:39and reap the rewards
21:40of the life
21:41we're building
21:42having the kids involved
21:44and helping
21:45just makes it special
21:47because they'll one day
21:48hopefully
21:48take over
21:51me and Calvin
21:51can be in the Bahamas
21:53so I'm hoping
21:53that the kids
21:54are doing all this
21:55and we're just sitting back
21:56and they're sending us money
21:59do you think
22:00you know what
22:00I would actually love
22:02let's say in
22:03I don't know
22:0520 years from now
22:07that I'm just
22:08kind of the
22:09the farm
22:10handyman
22:11the farm labourer
22:12that the kids are running
22:13a big farming enterprise
22:14yeah
22:15do you think
22:16you'll let go though
22:17do you think
22:17you'll let go
22:18of that control
22:19because knowing you
22:22I can't imagine it
22:23I think
22:25that's probably
22:26the hardest thing
22:26for most farming families
22:28to let go
22:30I won't
22:30I'll be on a world cruise
22:32I'm doing my shift
22:33and then I'm enjoying
22:34the rest of it
22:40maybe we should do a series
22:41we'll come back
22:42when we're 18
22:42we'll still be here
22:43in the same room
22:44boxing blankets
22:47kids will be doing
22:47something completely different
23:06one of my personal ambitions
23:08as a farmer
23:08is to be known
23:09for producing
23:10top quality
23:11grass fed
23:12British beef
23:12we've started small
23:14with a herd of
23:15native Lincoln Reds
23:16and today is the day
23:17that we get to see
23:18if our investment
23:19will reap a reward
23:21Highfield House Farm
23:23in Chesterfield
23:23has a reputation
23:24for selling quality beef
23:26and we've sent
23:27the first of our herd here
23:28to be butchered by Josh
23:29who's been butchering
23:30for almost 20 years
23:34hello
23:34you alright
23:35too bad Josh
23:36how are you
23:36alright thank you
23:36nice to meet you
23:37nice to meet you
23:38hello
23:38nice to meet you
23:39you too
23:40this looks great
23:41thank you
23:42yeah
23:42try and source it
23:43all locally
23:44as much as we can
23:44yeah
23:45try and keep it all
23:46in a 10 mile radius
23:47really
23:48our farm
23:49is a tad outside
23:50that radius
23:50but the plan
23:51for our beef
23:52is to sell it
23:52ourselves
23:53in meat boxes
23:53at our Christmas event
23:55yeah
23:55would you like
23:56just come round
23:56and have a look
23:57yep
23:58but we're hoping
23:59with Josh's help
24:00our beef journey
24:01can get off
24:02to a good start
24:06blimey
24:07I wasn't expecting that
24:08that is
24:09that's incredible
24:11wow
24:13is that all ours
24:15yes
24:17wow
24:17there's a bit of stew
24:18and mince separate
24:19that we've got to do
24:20yet and dice up
24:20but there are
24:21your primal cuts
24:23can I feel a bit
24:24overwhelmed
24:25this is
24:25I've never
24:27that's just amazing
24:30isn't it
24:32I feel really proud
24:34seeing our first beef
24:35laid out on a table
24:36is a lot to take in
24:38but Liz and I
24:39really want to understand
24:40how our care
24:41for our animals
24:41affects the quality
24:43of the meat
24:43it's great and nice
24:44so the right
24:45confirmation
24:46and you've never
24:47done a Lincoln Red
24:47before
24:48no
24:48first one we've done
24:49of all the animals
24:50you've carved
24:52is this the best one
24:54I'm going to have to say
24:55so you're saying
24:58it's good
24:59yeah
24:59the best
25:00very
25:00very good
25:02well done Kelvin
25:04well this is
25:05I've got to say
25:06as a
25:07it's a spectacle
25:08you see this day in
25:09day out
25:09but when from us
25:11we've only ever seen
25:12pieces of meat
25:13either at the butchers
25:14or in the super market
25:14or on your dinner plate
25:16to us
25:16it looks like
25:17one animal
25:18could feed an army
25:19but Josh is keen
25:20to help us understand
25:21what one animal
25:22actually produces
25:23so on this front
25:25bench we've got
25:25your four quarter beef
25:26so shin beef
25:28ribs of beef
25:29these are your short ribs
25:31or oven busters
25:32these are becoming
25:33very popular
25:34these are your chuck roast
25:36so your old traditional
25:37braising steak
25:38and the list
25:39goes on
25:40and then we've got
25:41your feather blade
25:42if you slice it
25:43on an angle
25:44as you presented it
25:45it looked like a feather
25:46with all the bristle
25:47going out
25:47and then this is
25:48your money
25:49so you've got your
25:50sirloin
25:51your rump there
25:53and there's your fillet
25:55it's taken Josh
25:56and his right hand man
25:57Rob
25:57all morning
25:58to butcher
25:59half the carcass
26:00and we've got you
26:01a couple of smocks
26:02and then
26:03if you want to cut
26:05we'll cut him
26:05on this out
26:06and if you want to
26:07cut yourself some steaks
26:08some sirloin rumps
26:09are you cooking?
26:10we're on steak tonight
26:11and I'm doing portions
26:14so I'll be very generous
26:16his and hers
26:17we've got to treat ourselves
26:19it'll be fine
26:21I feel like I'm
26:22insuring again
26:23it's a good fit that
26:26good fit that isn't it
26:27you look well
26:31you're a big girl
26:31we're not a bit sure
26:32are you
26:34right we'll truck this over
26:36how's this going
26:36you can look
26:37take you on that block
26:38if you want
26:39I can't do you
26:39feel weight on him
26:40oh blimey
26:45Kelvin you're soon
26:46being a butcher
26:47honest to god
26:48you love a pat
26:50while Rob separates
26:51the rump from the sirloin
26:52Liz is more interested
26:54in some of the byproducts
26:55we could be getting
26:56where is the tallow
26:57because it's good for your face
26:58like these days
27:00we've seen so
27:01haven't we Rob
27:02love a bit of tallow
27:04we can cook the steak
27:05in the tallow
27:06and then whatever's left
27:07you can rub on your face
27:09nice
27:10yeah just let it cool down
27:11yeah
27:11I'm so young
27:12I've got third degree
27:13birds from my tallow
27:14we don't recommend
27:15trying that at home
27:16I'm watching you there
27:17Josh
27:18don't be taking
27:18too much of that
27:19fillet off lad
27:21so it matures
27:22on the bone
27:23just to give it
27:24that extra
27:25flavour
27:26the longer you hang it
27:28the better it tastes
27:30really
27:31right so we've got
27:32this is your full fillet
27:33yeah
27:33and it tapers down
27:35to what you call
27:35your fillet tail
27:36which people use
27:37for stroganoff
27:38stuff like that
27:39because she can't get away
27:40with filling it as a fillet steak
27:41because it's not full fillet
27:42take the tail off
27:44okay
27:44that's it
27:45oh my god
27:46that's like
27:47that is like
27:48a slice of butter
27:51you're going to tell me
27:52you told me you want
27:52to do knife jacks
27:54just keep running it down
27:58that's it
27:58pull away
28:01oh just like you
28:02a nice little cute steak
28:04you're always best
28:05folding your knuckles over
28:06and then you're never
28:07going to cut your fingers
28:08catch yourself
28:08yeah
28:10and after mastering
28:11the fillet
28:11Liz has a go
28:13at the sirloin
28:13just put a bit of pressure on
28:15and then let the knife
28:16do the work
28:18bit of pressure on down
28:19with your full hand on it
28:20and gone
28:21and gone
28:25now that's a man's steak
28:26that is a man's steak
28:27that's a man
28:28that is a man's steak
28:29Liz you've got a job here
28:30you can have it
28:32so that is a his and hers
28:34you've always been the man
28:35in this relationship
28:35haven't you
28:39right we'll get this
28:40packaged up
28:41find your name on there
28:45fletcher's
28:46and then
28:47fillet steak
28:48fillet steak
28:51oh
28:53fletcher's on the farm
28:54fletcher's on the farm
28:54native grass fed
28:55lincoln red
28:56fillet steak
28:58there you have it
29:00our first beef
29:02fletcher beef
29:04yeah
29:05yeah
29:05well done
29:07Liz's parents
29:08have got their kids
29:08today
29:09whilst me and Liz are here
29:10so I'm going to
29:11package this up
29:12and give it to them
29:13as a bit of a thank you
29:14but make sure the price
29:15is on it
29:15so Liz's dad knows
29:17is that a good do
29:19what a moment for us
29:21raising our first beef
29:22animal from start to
29:23finish
29:24and being complimented
29:25by Josh
29:26on the quality
29:27that is something
29:28to be really proud of
29:29it's not a moment
29:30for a vegetarian
29:31but if you've found
29:32that animal
29:32it is something to be
29:33like
29:34it's impressive
29:35isn't it
29:36really impressive
29:36and genuinely
29:37you know
29:38nowadays
29:38you talk about
29:40what's sustainable
29:41and all that
29:42that one animal there
29:43yeah
29:44could feed us
29:45as a family
29:45for the next
29:4712, 18, 2
29:47you know
29:48yeah
29:49and the biggest thing
29:50is we've got
29:50tonight's tea
29:51are you cooking?
29:53I'll cook it
29:53oh finally
29:54and we've also got
29:56some uh
29:57also got some beef
29:58to sell
29:58at the Christmas
30:00event
30:01come on I'm freezing
30:02and I'm hungry as well
30:03I'm excited for you
30:04to cook
30:21oh the pigs
30:22are every
30:23oh Kelvin
30:24what?
30:25come on
30:26this way
30:27let's get a bucket
30:28so the pigs
30:29have broken out
30:31they've found the food
30:32they've sniffed it out
30:33they've nibbled away
30:35at the bags
30:35and they're all
30:36just having an absolute
30:37feast
30:39which is what pigs do
30:41it's been over a year
30:42since we had pigs
30:43on the farm
30:44and it's easy to forget
30:45how crafty they can be
30:47especially
30:47when it comes to
30:48sniffing out food
30:50go on
30:50out
30:51go on you little monkey
30:56my cheek
30:57look at them
31:00we're gonna lose them
31:01if you don't hurry up
31:02so come on
31:02he's funny
31:03because the first time
31:04we had the farm
31:05and we had pigs
31:05and they were out
31:06we were like
31:06the pigs are out
31:08and he was a big
31:09big like
31:11like disaster
31:13now we're like
31:13the pigs are out
31:16we've got 12
31:17saddleback cross
31:18piglets
31:19and there's no denying
31:20they do add a bit of
31:21character to the farm
31:22but we need these
31:23piglets to behave
31:28there we go
31:29in
31:30right let's get them in
31:31we've already got two in
31:33two in
31:3410 to go
31:35they're coming
31:35come on
31:36come on lads
31:37that way
31:38hey come on
31:39this way
31:40let's go
31:41come on
31:44I've got eight
31:45oh no I've got ten
31:46oh there's two here
31:48there's two here
31:48go on
31:51have we got them all in
31:52yep
31:54oh that was easier
31:55than I thought
31:57there'll be great
31:58entertainment for the
31:59families visiting our
32:00farm at Christmas
32:01but the real reason
32:02they're here
32:03is to be raised by us
32:04and if they do well
32:05we could breed more
32:07look at them
32:09I love that one
32:10mate how cute he is
32:11shall we sex them
32:12see how many gilts we've got
32:14we could keep some of the
32:14females back
32:15and if they
32:16if they look alright
32:17they're growing well
32:18we could maybe breed from them
32:19just want to keep one of the females
32:21back I would have thought
32:22come on
32:33aww
32:34right let's have a look
32:36boy
32:37right one female
32:39two female
32:41three female
32:45four
32:48and your last count
32:49giving up
32:52I tried my best
32:53but they were having
32:54none of it
32:55so I'll have to try
32:56another time
32:57to check how many
32:57female pigs we have
32:59but at least
33:00they're all rounded up
33:18Josh is busy adding
33:20more straw bales
33:21to the maze
33:21I'm up a ladder
33:23fitting fairy lights
33:24and our friend Gloria
33:26has been rubbed
33:27into some painting too
33:29this is what we call
33:30the messy middle bit
33:31of Christmas prep
33:32the point where
33:33it doesn't look like much
33:34but soon
33:35everything should
33:36start coming together
33:38I've been meaning
33:39to paint this breeze block
33:40for so long
33:41and today's a good
33:43dry day
33:43so this is all
33:45going to get painted
33:46like a nice
33:46rich dark brown
33:47which will then
33:48match the inside
33:49and adjust
33:50I'm hoping
33:53just make this feel
33:54a little less
33:57breeze blocky
33:59I buy the things
34:01I need
34:01and then the kids
34:02see it
34:03and I don't know
34:04where they put
34:05these things
34:06so this tiny
34:07little roller
34:08is going to get me
34:09through this wall
34:09being little
34:10doesn't mean
34:11you can't do the job
34:12I live by that rule
34:14so he's going to do it
34:15here we go
34:19decorators will be
34:20screaming at the TV
34:21watching this
34:21at this rate
34:23I'll be done
34:23next Christmas
34:25the thing is
34:26you've got to
34:27start these jobs
34:27to then realise
34:28you've got to
34:28finish it
34:29and that's how
34:29these jobs get
34:30done around here
34:30sometimes
34:31I think doing
34:32these events as well
34:33and you do get to
34:34a point where you
34:35think oh no
34:35I don't think
34:36we should have
34:36done it
34:37because it is just
34:39us and friends
34:40who are helping
34:42us set it up
34:43you know
34:43it's not some
34:44big company
34:46but actually
34:47when things start
34:48to come together
34:48you think I'm so
34:49glad we did it
34:50and then when
34:51the families come
34:52and they're having
34:53a good time
34:53it's even better
34:55yeah it's all
34:55hands on at the
34:56minute
34:56I can hear
34:57drills and wood
34:58being caught
34:59and we're making
35:00a little mini golf
35:01course
35:04the candy cane
35:04golf
35:05so it's all
35:07happening
35:07everyone's got
35:08their designated
35:08jobs
35:09and they're all
35:10just getting
35:10stuck through
35:11there's always
35:12that feeling
35:12of pressure
35:14I always feel
35:14that when anyone's
35:15ever spent their
35:16money
35:16there's an element
35:17of pressure
35:18that expectations
35:19are met
35:19it's value
35:20for what you've
35:21paid
35:22and that you
35:22leave having
35:23a great time
35:23so yeah
35:24there's always
35:24pressure
35:27weirdly I think
35:27that's where
35:28we excel
35:30we work well
35:31under pressure
35:31we work well
35:32under pressure
35:32until a deadline
35:43it's a proper
35:44family affair
35:45on the farm
35:45today
35:46as we try
35:47to round up
35:47our ever-growing
35:48flock
35:49we're pretty
35:50used to
35:50moving sheep
35:50by now
35:51but with a
35:52flock of
35:5270 plus
35:53today
35:53could get
35:54a little
35:55bit lively
35:59so sheep
36:00cycle
36:00every 17
36:01days
36:01and we
36:02like to
36:02have
36:03kind of
36:04two bites
36:04at the
36:04cherries
36:05so we
36:05allow for
36:05two
36:0617 day
36:07cycles
36:08ideally
36:08you want
36:08it all
36:09done
36:09within
36:09the 17
36:09days
36:10because
36:10you know
36:10then
36:11that your
36:11lamb is
36:12going to
36:12be done
36:12and dusted
36:12within
36:1317
36:13days
36:13so
36:13the males
36:15have gone
36:15out in
36:15the two
36:15respective flocks
36:1717 days
36:18is up
36:19and what we're
36:20going to do
36:20now is mix
36:21them all
36:21together
36:21just to make
36:22sure in this
36:22second cycle
36:23if some ewes
36:25have not
36:26caught lamb
36:27for whatever
36:27reason
36:28then this is
36:29like the final
36:29chance
36:31this is
36:32what we
36:32like to
36:32call
36:33our
36:33insurance
36:33policy
36:35the
36:35tubs
36:35can sense
36:36if any
36:36of the
36:36ewes
36:37haven't
36:37been
36:37served
36:37so by
36:38mixing
36:38the flocks
36:39the males
36:40can ensure
36:40that every
36:41one of
36:41them
36:41has a
36:42chance
36:42of getting
36:42in
36:43lamb
36:4417
36:45days
36:45has gone
36:46this is
36:47the second
36:47cycle
36:48and this
36:49is we're
36:49going to
36:49mix all
36:50the sheep
36:51together
36:51and they're
36:52all going
36:52to go
36:52in one
36:52field
36:53and it's
36:53that field
36:53over there
36:54so we've
36:54basically
36:54got to
36:55move
36:55mine
36:55is
36:56sheep
36:56today
36:56we've
36:57got to
36:57move
36:57the
36:57jacobs
36:57from
36:58the
36:58front
36:58of
36:58the
36:58farm
36:59to
37:00the
37:00middle
37:00of
37:00farm
37:00right
37:01one
37:01question
37:02how do
37:03you know
37:04what day
37:05to let out
37:07your sheep
37:08good question
37:09so sheep
37:11normally
37:11the girl sheep
37:12are ready
37:13to be
37:13tucked
37:13around
37:15october
37:15november
37:16time
37:16well it's
37:17in november
37:17because the
37:18ideal is that
37:19you want
37:19lambs in
37:20spring

37:22got better
37:22grass
37:22so if

37:28now while
37:29you're
37:29asking
37:29really
37:29intelligent
37:30questions
37:30your brothers
37:31are drinking
37:32water from
37:32the drain
37:35that is what
37:37you call
37:37farm kids
37:38isn't it
37:38show me what
37:39a farm kid
37:39looks like
37:40it looks
37:41like that
37:41alright
37:42guys who
37:43wants some
37:43new sheep
37:44let's go
37:48we're finally
37:49ready to round
37:50up some sheep
37:50but it seems
37:51the weather
37:52has other
37:52ideas
37:54it is so
37:55misty
37:55you actually
37:56can't see
37:56the sheep
37:56in this
37:57field
37:58the job
37:58could still
37:59be done
37:59but
38:01we've got
38:01kids with
38:01us
38:02when the
38:03kids can't
38:03see you
38:03when you're
38:04running off
38:04and then the
38:05sheep can't
38:06see you
38:06no one's
38:07going the
38:07right direction
38:08so I'm
38:09going to
38:09wait for
38:09Kelvin to
38:09come down
38:10and we're
38:10going to
38:10see if
38:12we should
38:13still go
38:13ahead
38:13it literally
38:14feels like
38:15we are
38:15in a
38:15cloud
38:17but they
38:18do need
38:18to be
38:19moved
38:21so we'll
38:22see
38:23will the
38:24sheep
38:24see you
38:26the sheep
38:27won't know
38:27where to
38:27go
38:34right
38:38I'm going
38:39to call
38:39it game
38:40over
38:40for the
38:40kids
38:41oh my
38:42god
38:43Matthias
38:45what are
38:46you doing
38:47to me
38:50my washing
38:51bill costs
38:52more than
38:52the farm
38:52bill
38:55it's just
38:56too foggy
38:56you literally
38:56can hardly see
38:57your hand in
38:57front of your
38:58face so we're
38:58not going to
38:58move them
38:59now I think
38:59the kids are
39:00cold freezing
39:01and the fogs
39:03you're not
39:03cold you're
39:04alright fogs
39:04is too bad
39:05so we're
39:06going to have
39:06to abort
39:06mission and
39:07maybe come
39:08back tomorrow
39:09try it
39:09tomorrow
39:09get a cup
39:10of tea
39:10instead
39:15oh god
39:16what's
39:17happened
39:17now
39:18mission
39:19aborting
39:21he's not
39:22coming in
39:22this house
39:23like that
39:23mission
39:24aborting
39:26the sheep
39:27move has
39:27been delayed
39:29until tomorrow
39:30between the
39:31fog rolling
39:32in and one
39:32very muddy
39:33child plans
39:34have changed
39:35the sheep
39:35will have
39:36to wait
39:56one thing
39:57we've learned
39:58raising farm
39:59kids is they
39:59don't stay
40:00clean for
40:01long
40:03just put a
40:04brand new
40:04car on
40:04Matthias
40:05we've been
40:06out for
40:06one second
40:07and it's
40:07filthy
40:08and bad
40:09weather never
40:10stops them
40:11from exploring
40:13and it looks
40:14like Max
40:14has found
40:15something worthy
40:16of further
40:16investigation
40:17this was
40:19in that
40:20boat
40:20all day
40:21and daddy
40:22made you
40:23fix it
40:24and that
40:25was
40:25that was
40:27con
40:28going down
40:28and daddy
40:29put his
40:31hand in it
40:33which roughly
40:34translates into
40:35he thinks
40:36there's something
40:36stuck down
40:37the drain
40:38so we've got
40:38a little block
40:39drain and I
40:40thought it'd be
40:40quite a good
40:40little job
40:41but the kids
40:42do
40:43kids busy
40:44and a bit
40:44of farm
40:44maintenance
40:45being ticked
40:46off at the
40:46same time
40:47so what are
40:48these called
40:48they were
40:48no
40:51draining
40:52pipes
40:53nearly
40:54draining sticks
40:55nearly
40:57draining rods
40:58so we'll
40:59put the
40:59first one
40:59down
41:00and let's
41:00have a look
41:00where the hole
41:01is
41:01the cabin
41:02will be
41:02getting really
41:02stressed out
41:03about it
41:03while everyone
41:04else is just
41:04having a good
41:05time
41:06yes
41:06even rodding
41:07a drain
41:07will keep
41:08our four
41:08entertained
41:09and I'd
41:10argue
41:10also giving
41:11them a few
41:12life skills
41:13all that water
41:14there from
41:15like the rain
41:16and stuff
41:17comes down
41:19and then it
41:20comes out
41:20into that drain
41:21and then that
41:22drain flushes
41:23into the sewers
41:24I know where
41:25the hole goes
41:25guys
41:26who wants
41:26to come
41:26and rod it
41:27right
41:27mine is
41:28yeah you can't
41:28you'll have that
41:29stick
41:29there's another
41:30stick up there
41:32it's a weird one
41:33it kind of goes
41:34underneath
41:34and then comes
41:35down so it's
41:36a bit of a weird
41:36angle
41:41we need to go
41:42longer
41:43oh I've got it
41:44I've got it
41:44I've got it
41:47right try and get
41:48one more in here
41:48we're probably
41:49one short
41:50these are just
41:51little maintenance
41:52jobs that without
41:53kids you'd have it
41:54done within half an
41:55hour
41:55with kids
41:55it doesn't get
41:57done and it takes
41:58three hours
41:58and it causes
41:59the water
41:59out
41:59but
42:00probably isn't it
42:01I guess
42:02Mila do you want to
42:02turn that tap on
42:03and see if it comes
42:04out
42:04can you hear something
42:05yeah
42:08that's the water
42:08it's coming out
42:10is it coming
42:10yeah
42:12let me try
42:13feeling
42:13oh I found the hole
42:14I found the hole
42:16right now keep your
42:17hand in and see if you
42:17can feel the pipe
42:18I'm scared
42:19be brave
42:28and we should see it
42:30coming here
42:32this is the feeling of
42:34being back on the farm
42:36it's a foggy misty day
42:38and we've rodding drains
42:40but it feels so good
42:42it feels so good
43:03after a busy day of herding sheep
43:05feeding pigs and clearing the barns
43:07the kids are starting to feel the cold
43:09you want to build something
43:11and I've got the perfect idea
43:13for warming them up
43:14we'll get a fire going
43:15yeah please
43:17I've been looking for
43:18fire lighters
43:20have ya?
43:22call me cold
43:23as ever
43:24I'm not moving quick enough
43:25for the boys
43:28fire
43:29fire
43:31so while Marnie takes charge
43:33of finding Kingling
43:34Matthias is keeping his brothers
43:36entertained
43:37with campfire songs
43:38drink all
43:40drink all
43:42everybody's things
43:48yep the fire's coming
43:49get it back now guys
43:51start him
43:52hey dad we want to put some mud in
43:54you could put
43:55I've got to use some bigger pieces
43:56guys it's a lot more smoke than fire
44:00it'll get going in a minute
44:02who can tell me
44:04what three things fire needs
44:06I know
44:07oxygen
44:08oxygen
44:08well yes
44:09air
44:11smoke
44:13no not smoke
44:16well fuel
44:18that's fuel
44:19so a fire needs three things
44:21it needs air
44:22fuel
44:22fuel and I'll give you a clue
44:24the more the sun comes out
44:26the more we feel it
44:27warm
44:29yes
44:29heat
44:30heat
44:30they're the three things fire needs
44:32so if it's hot enough
44:33and there's oxygen
44:35and there's a fuel
44:37to burn
44:38you'll get fire
44:41that's a fire
44:42that was amazing
44:44it's moments like this
44:46that I want the kids to remember
44:47not the weather
44:49or the work
44:50just us being together
45:01next time on our farm
45:03our young tup kelvin is struck with a sheep's worst enemy
45:08it's foot rot
45:09I don't even want to smell it
45:10because once you smell it
45:11you cannot get rid of it
45:12no
45:14we add the final touches
45:15to our winter event
45:17before we open our farm gates
45:18to the public
45:21and then you come in here
45:22with all the days
45:24so cute
45:25you can have a little picture
45:27near the days
45:29like that
45:30or
45:34it will turn on
45:35it will be beautiful
45:37and the kids get the first ride
45:39on our very own
45:40tractor come sleigh
45:41before the guests arrive
45:43are we ready?
45:44let's go
45:45let's go
45:47put your foot down
45:48put your foot down
