00:02Mythical megafauna sculpture cast in blue has caused plenty of controversy for Mount Gambier.
00:08A waste of money.
00:09My children love it, every time we drive past they know it's coming, they point it out and we see
00:14lots of tourists taking photos.
00:15I actually think that it's quite ingenious and I think it's wonderful for the town, it's got people talking.
00:21Known as the blue blob, it cost ratepayers $136,000.
00:25But the council says public sentiment has shifted since it was installed in Mount Gambier last July.
00:32People come to me and say, you know Lynette, I didn't really like him to start off with but he's
00:41okay.
00:42And I do think he is becoming a much loved part of our community.
00:47Fans are happy more people are recognising the sculpture's value.
00:51People who have lived in this town and maybe moved away, young people have come back and they've had their
00:57photos with it and they think it's really great.
00:59The shift in sentiment has paid off for Mount Gambier City Council who say their merchandise line has sold out
01:04multiple times and visitation to the Mount Gambier CBD is up.
01:08Because of controversy, because of it being an Instagrammable thing, attitudes change and they begin to embrace it because it
01:16becomes a part of the local identity and people become really proud of that.
01:20Like it or not, the blue blob is here to stay.
01:23Bye-bye
01:23Bye-bye.
01:23Bye-bye.
01:24Bye.
