Young Australians are looking beyond cities and moving to the regions. The 2026 Young and Regional series investigates the unique opportunities and challenges they face.
Transcript
00:00More than ever, young people are taking a punt and moving regional.
00:03The houses are cheaper, the commutes are shorter, but what's the catch?
00:07There's just not the access to services here that are needed.
00:12Lack of transport, lack of events.
00:14If you're lonely, it has the health equivalent of smoking 15 cigarettes a day.
00:21So what helps young people in regional towns?
00:24Not just services, but spaces where they can connect, belong to the community and build a future.
00:31Young people bring energy, creativity and arts and music, cultural and linguistic diversity to a place.
00:40I want to see more young people stay in the regions and live here in the regions.
00:44No matter where you're from, it brings all the people together.
00:46So I think that sense of unity helps keep people in town.
00:50They'll then volunteer, they'll then contribute, they'll then invest in the future of the town.
