00:00In July 2024, the city of Mount Gambier in South Australia unveiled a brand,
00:06new public sculpture called Cast in Blue.
00:10It cost 136,000 a.m.
00:13It was inspired by a mythical prehistoric marsupial.
00:16Locals took one look at it and immediately nicknamed it the Blue Blob.
00:21Nobody liked it.
00:23Then a 20-year-old woman named Amelia.
00:26Van der Horst showed up in the middle of the night after drinking three lirs of vodka and taking MDMA
00:33and decided the Blue Blob needed googly eyes.
00:37She stuck them on.
00:38She filmed it.
00:40She posted it online.
00:42Now the Internet loved it.
00:44The council did not.
00:46Amelia was charged with vandalism and taken to court.
00:49Standing before a magistrate, she explained that she had just wanted to make it look funny
00:54and admitted it was one of the stupidest things she had ever done.
00:59She was ordered to pay $2,000 in compensation and complete 60 hours of community service.
01:06The Blue Blob has since been restored to its original eyeless state.
01:11The city stands by its $136,000 decision.
