Synopsis : La prison de Séville, en 1597. Miguel de Cervantès, écrivain sans succès et accusé d'hérésie, attend avec son valet Sancho Pança de passer devant le tribunal de l'Inquisition. Ses compagnons de cachot, voleurs, vagabonds et truands, menacent de le dépouiller de ses effets. Il est notamment en possession d'un manuscrit inachevé portant le titre de "Don Quichotte". Pour se tirer de cette mauvaise passe, Cervantès propose aux autres prisonniers de jouer pour eux les aventures de Don Quichotte en compagnie de son valet. Les plus fameux épisodes du roman sont ainsi mis en scène : l'attaque des moulins à vent, ou encore Don Quichotte fait chevalier par un aubergiste....
