The Strait of Hormuz is one of the most strategically important waterways in the world. Located between Iran and Oman, this narrow maritime passage connects the Persian Gulf to the Gulf of Oman and ultimately the Arabian Sea. The strait is about 21 miles (34 km) wide at its narrowest point, with shipping lanes only about 2 miles wide in each direction, making it a critical chokepoint for global maritime trade.

In this video, we explore the geographic overview of the Strait of Hormuz, including its location, width, surrounding countries, and strategic connections to the Persian Gulf region. We also explain why the strait is vital for global oil transportation, as around 20% of the world’s oil supply passes through this narrow waterway every day.

If you are interested in geography, geopolitics, and global trade routes, this video provides a clear explanation of why the Strait of Hormuz remains one of the most important maritime passages in the world.

00:42Iran, controls the northern shore of the Strait, its naval bases and islands give it leverage over shipping lanes.
00:48It has historically threatened closure of Hormuz during geopolitical tensions.
00:53Iraq, though its coastline is small, Iraq's oil exports depend on the Persian Gulf,
00:59which funnels through Hormuz to reach global buyers.
01:02Stability in Hormuz directly affects Iraq's economy.
01:06Kuwait, entirely reliant on the Persian Gulf for oil exports.
01:11Every tanker must pass Hormuz, making it a lifeline for Kuwait's trade.
01:16Saudi Arabia, eastern oil fields ship through the Gulf and Hormuz,
01:20though pipelines to the Red Sea reduce dependence.
01:23Still, Hormuz remains critical for its Gulf Coast exports.
01:28Bahrain, situated in the Persian Gulf, its shipping routes connect through Hormuz,
01:32its economy is tied to Gulf trade and regional stability.
01:36Qatar, world's largest LNG exporter.
01:40Nearly all shipments transit Hormuz, making it one of the most exposed states to disruptions there.
01:46United Arab Emirates, has ports near Hormuz, while pipelines bypass some traffic,
01:52much of its oil and trade still flows through the Strait.
01:55Oman, controls the southern coast of Hormuz, including Musandum Peninsula,
02:00giving it a strategic vantage point over the choke point.

02:10and East Asia.
02:11Gulf of Oman, transitional water body linking Hormuz to the Arabian Sea,

02:24Hormuz is the only exit to the open ocean.
02:27The Strait of Hormuz is the world's most vital maritime choke point,
02:30linking the Persian Gulf to the wider oceans and carrying a quarter of global oil trade.
02:36Its narrow geography and strategic location make it both a lifeline for Gulf economies
02:41and a hotspot for geopolitical tension.
02:44In essence, the Strait is a small passage with an outsized impact
02:47on global energy security and international stability.
