00:05A FATAL FALL IN THE ROCKY MOUNTAINS
00:08My wife had fallen from a rock and she's in really critical condition
00:12Tony had fallen from the top of a cliff face. It was 160 feet down
00:17A life cut short in the blink of an eye
00:20Never in a million years did I ever think I would never see her again after that phone call
00:26Was it simply tragic misfortune?
00:29Harold claimed that Tony had fallen in an absolute freak accident
00:33When they'd taken a spontaneous detour off the path on their hike
00:37Or murder
00:59My name is Alison Talley. I live in Jackson, Mississippi. And Tony Bertolet Hintthorne was one of my best friends.
01:09You always want to surround yourself with people who lift you up
01:12And make you a better person. And she was absolutely that person that makes you a better person in every
01:16aspect of your life
01:20Tony grew up in nearby Natchez
01:22Her parents owned a prosperous oil and gas business
01:26So Tony had quite a privileged upbringing alongside her two brothers
01:31At school, Tony was always top of her class
01:34She loved athletics and she set her sights on a career in medicine
01:38Tony was the smartest, most intelligent, most beautiful, wisest person I knew
01:44She was an ophthalmologist and she used her gift of creativity to be able to make people see better
01:49And I loved that about her. She was really well liked to have a lot of patience
01:54In 1999, she called me and she said, I've met somebody
01:57And she said that she had met him through a dating site
02:00When I met Harold in person for the first time
02:03He was so handsome. He had on a nice suit
02:06And he's so outgoing
02:08We loved him. We thought this is great because she was the opposite
02:11She was an introvert. She was quiet
02:13That seemed like that would be a good fit for her
02:15At the time of their meeting, Harold was newly widowed
02:19He'd just lost his wife, Lynn, five years earlier
02:22He came across as a wealthy businessman
02:25He said he'd recently sold his diamond business
02:27And now he was retired and wanting to relax a little bit
02:31And had moved into a new venture
02:33Raising money for non-profit organizations
02:35He was excited about meeting someone like Tony
02:38Starting a new life together
02:40And hopefully another happily ever after story
02:45It was a bit of a whirlwind
02:46It moved really, really quickly
02:48Within a few weeks, they got engaged on Valentine's Day
02:52Exactly six weeks after they met for the first time
02:54And the wheels really turned fast after that
02:57They were married in September of the same year
02:59It was just beautiful
03:00It was picture perfect
03:01Very traditional
03:02And we were so thrilled that she had met somebody
03:05That we thought would be her long-lasting love
03:07And we were so excited about it
03:11After two years of happy marriage in Tony's home state of Mississippi
03:15They moved nearer to Harold's home city of Denver, Colorado
03:19To begin the next chapter of their lives
03:24Tony has always wanted to be a mom
03:27And in June of 2005 gave birth to a beautiful little girl
03:30And that just changed her world
03:34That was the most wonderful thing that had happened to her up to that point
03:40Every year, Harold and Tony would celebrate the life they'd built together
03:45And in September 2012, 12 years after their whirlwind marriage
03:50Harold had something special planned
03:53This year, he called me just to tell me that he had some grand plan
03:57This is the best anniversary ever
03:58That he was taking her on a hiking trip
04:01He was going to pick her up and sweep her away
04:03He would have her bags packed
04:05And then go to the Rocky Mountain National Park
04:07And just spend the weekend on a hike
04:11This was their 12th wedding anniversary
04:14So Harold had planned a special surprise trip
04:17He'd put a lot of effort into this, in fact
04:20He'd told Tony's colleagues to clear her diary
04:23And they'd got a babysitter as well
04:25For their seven-year-old daughter
04:26So this was an extra special trip that he had planned
04:31At the time, Valeria Spencer was Assistant U.S. Attorney
04:35For the District of Colorado
04:36Her jurisdiction covered 64 counties
04:40Across 100,000 square miles
04:43Including incidents on federal land
04:46Such as the Rocky Mountain National Park
04:49The Rocky Mountains range all the way from
04:52Up in Canada down to New Mexico
04:54So they cover most of the western United States
04:57And specifically in Colorado
04:59About 50 miles away from where
05:01Tony and Harold Henthorne lived
05:03In the Denver metro area
05:05The Rocky Mountain National Park
05:08Is visited by millions of people
05:10And tourists every year
05:11They go there to enjoy the vast landscapes
05:14And the beautiful wildlife
05:17There's, of course, lots of safe paths
05:20For visitors to enjoy
05:21But there's also a lot of dangerous mountain trails
05:23Around in the National Park, too
05:25This includes some narrow cliff edges
05:28With sheer drops of up to 300 feet
05:31Looking down on rocky terrain and ravines
05:34This is why even experienced hikers and walkers
05:38Are advised to stick to the route
05:42But on September 29th, 2012
05:45Harold, a seasoned hiker
05:48Chose to take Tony on a challenging three-mile route
05:5210,000 feet up Deer Mountain
05:58Setting off around 1.30 p.m.
06:00They took photos along the way
06:04Ending at a lunch spot
06:05Where they enjoyed the incredible views
06:12But as the sun began to set
06:14On a perfect anniversary weekend
06:16A frantic call was made
06:209-1-1, what's the address, the emergency?
06:23Hello, my name is Harold Hidmore
06:24I'm in the Rocky Mandes Park
06:26Okay
06:26I need an alpine mountain rescue team immediately
06:29Okay, I'm going to transfer you to the park
06:31So hang on the line
06:34Go ahead, sir
06:35Thank you
06:35My wife had fallen from a rock
06:38On the north summit of Deer Mountain
06:41On the Deer Mountain Trail
06:43And she's in really critical condition
06:46Harold called 911 a little bit before 6 p.m.
06:50He gave them information about where he was
06:53But it turns out that that information was incorrect
06:56And so it took park rangers longer to get to him
06:59Than it might have otherwise
07:01A park ranger went up immediately
07:03With a pack full of medical supplies
07:05Not knowing exactly what he was getting to
07:08And for a few hours
07:09Tried to find Harold Henthorne and Tony Henthorne
07:12It was very dark by then
07:14He was calling out to Harold
07:16Calling back to headquarters
07:17To try and triangulate more specifically where he was
07:21And to have him start making noise
07:22So that he could hear him
07:24And be able to find him
07:25Which eventually did
07:26But it was hours after the first 911 call
07:31When the park ranger eventually arrived at the scene
07:34The severity of the situation quickly became apparent
07:37Tony had fallen from the top of a cliff face
07:40It was 160 feet down
07:43She landed in some trees
07:46And they could tell that because of the severity of the broken branches
07:50And they could follow the blood trail from the tree
07:53Then down some rocks to where she eventually lay
07:57Despite best efforts from the park ranger to save her
08:00Tony was pronounced dead at the scene
08:10After 50-year-old Tony Henthorne's fatal fall in the Rocky Mountains
08:14The news of her tragic accident spread quickly to her family and friends
08:20On the day of the accident
08:22Harold notified Tony's brother
08:26Who is a surgeon, a physician
08:28That there had been a critical accident
08:31Back then they notified us
08:35As soon as I found out about the accident
08:37There's nothing worse
08:39Anybody that's experienced loss or trauma like that
08:41Knows what a gut-wrenching experience it is
08:46And we stayed on the phone with them the rest of the evening
08:49Until we found out that she had passed away
08:54It was an excruciating experience for everybody that night
08:59It was just something that I hope nobody ever has to go through
09:03While Tony's loved ones in Mississippi processed the devastating news
09:09Park rangers followed standard procedure
09:11For all deadly falls in the national park
09:15They initiated a fatality investigation
09:18Which would eventually be escalated to assistant U.S. attorney Valeria Spencer
09:24Well there was a lot of odd things when the investigators went to the scene the next morning
09:29One of the things that was very odd was where Tony's body was
09:33Her camera was found right next to her
09:37Now she didn't fall right where she was laying
09:39And so that seemed to be odd that her camera would be there
09:43As well she was out of her boots
09:45And Harold had indicated that he had not removed the boots
09:47That they had fallen off during her fall down the cliffside
09:51But the investigators in their experience at the national park
09:54That's very odd for somebody to actually fall out of their hiking boots
09:58And so that seemed to be very unusual
10:00And the placement of them again just seemed off to the investigators
10:04So this is another odd thing that her hiking boot was found flung really far away
10:10Yet her digital camera was found perfectly next to her body
10:13There's some inconsistencies here that they raised questions over in terms of how she'd fallen
10:20Despite the peculiar placement of Tony's camera and hiking boots
10:24The scene still suggested an unfortunate fall
10:28But as part of their fatality investigation
10:31Park rangers proceeded to search Harold's vehicle
10:35They searched the jeep and they found a map of Rocky Mountain National Park
10:39Which is not unusual
10:40What was unusual is that the map was open
10:43There were some things written on it
10:45But there was a red X right in the area of Deer Mountain
10:49Not on the trail
10:51But where Tony actually died
10:56Alarm bells are now ringing
10:57So it gets escalated to the investigative services branch of the national park
11:02That's basically the FBI for this kind of jurisdiction
11:06So the obvious question once we have the X marking the spot as it were
11:10Is did Tony fall or was she pushed?
11:13But could a husband really bring himself to push his wife off a cliff to her death?
11:20A tragic accident remained the strongest possibility
11:23But the discovery of the map led investigators to drive to Harold's house to question him further
11:30Harold claimed that Tony had fallen in an absolute freak accident
11:34When they'd taken a spontaneous detour off the path on their hike
11:39They walk at least a third of a mile to get to the spot that we call the lunch spot
11:44Because we have photos where they're eating their meal
11:47It is a beautiful view
11:49You can really see a lot of the park there
11:51It's quite lovely
11:52And then they end up walking over to the spot that we then call the cliff spot
11:57That is the point at which we know Tony died
12:02But getting to the cliff's edge involved walking on ground not normally favoured by the average hiker
12:09You had to climb up all these really difficult terrains
12:12That would have even been tricky for really experienced hikers
12:15And Tony was known to have had three knee surgeries
12:18So it kind of suggests that that would have been quite an extreme excursion
12:23For what was supposed to be a nice relaxing anniversary weekend trip
12:29He said this was a spontaneous hike
12:31They ended up where they ended up
12:32By surprise
12:33By chance
12:34And in fact when you look at the X and where it is on the map
12:38It seems that Harold had planned it all along
12:41So now we have two very different stories
12:45Harold then changed the reason he gave for clambering across rocks to the cliff's edge
12:50Harold gave several different stories
12:53He started off by telling the ranger the next day
12:56That they had seen some wild turkeys
12:58And Tony wanted to get some photographs of that
13:01And the ranger was a little skeptical
13:03And Harold picked up on that
13:05We checked into that later
13:06From one of the scientists in the park
13:08And said there's no wild turkeys on that side of the park
13:10So X on that one
13:13So then Harold said
13:14Well we saw some deer
13:16Which would not be unusual to see some deer
13:18But not something that you would go down bouldering for
13:21If you had some knee surgeries
13:22As Tony did
13:24To get some pictures of them
13:25Then he says
13:26We wanted to hike down to another area
13:28To have some romantic time
13:29And when you see that area
13:32It is inhospitable
13:33It's very rocky
13:34And there's absolutely no possible way
13:36That there's anything going on there
13:38Romantic time or otherwise
13:42Investigators continued to keep an open mind
13:44On whether it was an accident
13:46Or something more sinister
13:49Meanwhile in Mississippi
13:50Tony's friend Allison
13:52Began to reflect on a phone call Harold had made to her
13:55Before Tony's death
13:57It was a really weird conversation
14:00Especially since he was excited about telling me about the trip
14:02And then it just changed direction so many times
14:06Excited at first
14:07And then he went down a rabbit hole of kind of critical
14:09Very critical of Tony and her family
14:12Tony and her job
14:13He wished she would just quit her job
14:14And stay home full time
14:16She doesn't spend enough time with her daughter
14:17And I started getting that they were probably having marital problems
14:21And that she was probably planning on leaving
14:24And this was his last ditch attempt at saving the marriage
14:28Is what I honestly felt like
14:30So it was a roller coaster of emotions on that phone call
14:33It was very interesting
14:34And very not typical of a phone call with him
14:38Never in a million years
14:39Did I ever think I would never see her again
14:41After that phone call
14:46When Allison met with Tony's family the day after Tony's passing
14:50She discovered they'd had similar experiences too
14:54It was her parents
14:55And people that were part of the immediate family
14:58When we started saying
14:59Okay, well he called me Monday
15:00And then somebody said
15:01Well he called me Tuesday
15:02We thought about it
15:04And all shared our stories
15:05And they were all the same
15:08Family and friends were also alarmed by Harold's behavior
15:11The day after Tony's passing
15:15After Tony died
15:17We wanted to make contact with Harold
15:19And by the time we made our first contact within 24 hours
15:23There was already a full website up
15:25On the Funeral Homes site
15:26Full website, full of pictures
15:28A complete bio
15:30A complete history with everything
15:32And we all felt like that was strange
15:34Especially since that website
15:36Was more about Harold than it was about Tony
15:38So that was kind of a red flag right there
15:41And then it went immediately
15:43Into planning a funeral
15:44To be able to plan a funeral
15:46Within a day of a death
15:48There's no emotion attached to it
15:50Most people wouldn't even be able to write an obituary
15:52Within days
15:54The medical examiner released Tony's body
15:57From the fall
15:58She had a massive head wound
16:00Twelve broken ribs
16:02Which then lacerated her liver
16:04Punctured her lungs
16:05Just caused massive internal injuries
16:08As well as the head wound
16:10At a funeral service
16:12Five days after Tony's death
16:14Her family were shocked to discover
16:16That as soon as Tony's body had been released
16:19Harold had quickly arranged for her
16:21To be cremated in secret
16:23Against their wishes
16:24That was about the second or third thing
16:27In a series of events
16:28Immediately after the death
16:30That were, whoa
16:32That's not right
16:37About three weeks after the funeral in Colorado
16:39We had a memorial service
16:41Here in Jackson
16:42Where everybody came down
16:43Including a few friends
16:44And Harold and their daughter
16:46Came down
16:47And we were all, you know
16:49Grieving
16:49And, you know
16:51It was just an emotional event
16:53And we look over
16:54And Harold is
16:54He's got his two or three friends
16:56From Colorado
16:57And they're shaking hands
16:58Joking around
16:59Talking about playing golf
17:00And very detached
17:01From the situation
17:02It was more like
17:03He was hosting a party
17:04Than being a part
17:07Of his wife's
17:08Final goodbye
17:09Because that was going to be
17:10The last
17:11Really the last tribute
17:12To her in public
17:13And that is not normal at all
17:17By now
17:18Valeria and her team
17:20Were working with the FBI
17:21And Park investigators
17:22Piecing together
17:24The timeline of events
17:25And they turned their attention
17:27To Harold's initial phone calls
17:28To the emergency services
17:47During one of the calls
17:49The operator was
17:50Instructing Harold
17:51How to perform CPR
17:53Midway through that process
17:54Harold blurted out
17:55That his phone was dying
17:57And that he needed to go
17:58And he hung up
18:00But after Harold
18:01Told the operator
18:02That his phone was dying
18:03Our records showed
18:04That he made over 20 phone calls
18:06And 100 texts were sent
18:09It just told us
18:10That Harold
18:11Was not being truthful
18:12About what was happening
18:13That evening with Tony
18:15And made us question
18:16Whether or not
18:16He was performing
18:17CPR at all
18:19Harold had claimed
18:20To the authorities
18:21That he'd been giving
18:22Tony CPR
18:24For over an hour
18:25Yet the coroner said
18:26There were no marks
18:27On her body
18:28No fractures
18:29To her ribs
18:30Or her chest
18:30And even her lipstick
18:32Was perfectly intact
18:33If you'd been giving someone
18:35CPR
18:36Mouth-to-mouth
18:36Resuscitation
18:37The body would not
18:38Look this way
18:42Investigators also
18:43Started to zero in
18:45On Harold's claims
18:46About the immediate moments
18:47Before Tony fell
18:49When Harold spoke
18:50To investigators
18:51The day after
18:52Tony's death
18:52He indicated
18:53That she was walking
18:55And he didn't really see her
18:56When she fell over
18:57The cliffside
18:57He indicated in fact
18:59That he was looking
18:59At his phone
19:00He'd received a text
19:01From their babysitter
19:02Indicating their daughter
19:03Had won her soccer game
19:05And what Harold had said
19:06Was that Tony had fallen
19:08And that it took him
19:0945 minutes
19:10To get down
19:11When someone's providing a lot
19:13Of very specific details
19:14It can also indicate
19:16That they've rehearsed
19:17The story
19:18At least internally
19:19Because they're trying
19:20To add some legitimacy
19:22To that story
19:23But actually
19:24It starts to indicate
19:26That there is an element
19:27Of planning involved
19:29In the telling
19:30Of that story
19:31When the timeline
19:32Of Harold's story
19:33Was checked out
19:34Call records
19:35Showed that he received
19:36The text from the babysitter
19:38At 5.54 p.m.
19:40At the cliff edge
19:41The exact same time
19:43He called 911
19:44After getting down
19:45To the bottom
19:46Of the cliff
19:46The timing just
19:48Doesn't add up
19:50So Valeria
19:51And her team
19:52Decided to visit
19:53The site
19:53To find out more
19:55We talked about
19:57That we needed
19:57To go up to the scene
19:58And see it ourselves
19:59To be able
19:59To really picture
20:00The different events
20:02And how things happened
20:04So Harold claimed
20:05That it took him
20:0545 minutes
20:06From the top of the cliff
20:07Down to the point
20:08Where Tony had fallen to
20:10So when we were there
20:11We hiked it
20:12In two different ways
20:13One is that we were
20:14A spouse who had just
20:15Seen their spouse fall
20:16Possibly to their death
20:17And the other way
20:18Is just to hike it down
20:19Carefully and safely
20:21Neither one took
20:22More than 15 minutes
20:25What we know later
20:26From the coroner
20:27Is that Tony was dead
20:28Within about 45 minutes
20:29Of the incident
20:30And so we were thinking
20:32The reason he said that
20:33Is he needed to build
20:34Time into the timing
20:36So that by the time
20:37He called 911
20:39Tony Henthorne
20:40Was already dead
20:44While visiting the scene
20:45Valeria made
20:46Another important discovery
20:49What I want to say
20:50About the cliff area
20:50That's very important
20:51To know
20:52Is that the cliff
20:53Actually is raised
20:55That is to say
20:56That you can't walk over it
20:58You have to step over
20:59Several feet
21:00To fall down the cliff
21:01So you have a natural
21:03Barrier between you
21:04And falling down it
21:06Our conclusion
21:07In looking at it
21:08Was that Tony
21:09Had to have been pushed
21:10Because she couldn't have fallen
21:17Harold Henthorne
21:18Was now the prime suspect
21:20In the murder
21:20Of his wife Tony
21:22Who investigators believed
21:23Had been pushed
21:24To her death
21:26But with no witnesses
21:27And no murder weapon
21:29Investigators were going
21:30To find it hard
21:31To prove Tony's death
21:32Was nothing but an accident
21:35So people like to think
21:36That most murder cases
21:37Are found with a smoking gun
21:39In someone's hand
21:39And they're immediately arrested
21:41But in most cases
21:42That's not what happens
21:43What we had in Rocky Mountain
21:45National Park that day
21:46Was a woman who died
21:48Period
21:49We don't know at that time
21:50If that was somebody
21:52Who slipped and fell
21:52Or somebody who was pushed
21:54And that takes some time
21:55To put a case together
21:56To prove that
21:58In a bid to find more evidence
22:01Investigators turned their attention
22:03To the camera
22:04Found by Tony's body
22:06Tony's camera had been broken
22:08In the fall
22:09But the memory card
22:10Was still intact
22:11And there was photos
22:12On there
22:12From Tony and Harold's
22:14Time on Dare Mountain
22:16There were photos
22:18Of Harold
22:18Stud gripping the tree
22:20In one of these photos
22:21He's wearing
22:22A white t-shirt
22:23But 15 minutes later
22:25He's in the same spot
22:26Wearing a denim shirt
22:28Tony's body
22:29Was found
22:30Directly under the tree
22:31Where they had
22:32That photo
22:34Investigators began to wonder
22:35Was Harold
22:36Luring her there
22:37Was he trying
22:38To show her
22:39That this was a safe place
22:40For her to come
22:40And have a photo
22:41And then
22:42Once he'd lured her there
22:44Under the pretense
22:45Of taking the photo
22:46Had he pushed her
22:47To her death
22:48But then
22:49That begs the question
22:50Why was Tony's camera
22:52Found so close
22:53To her body
22:54Did Harold
22:56Want investigators
22:57To find these photos
22:58Of them
22:59Looking like a happy couple
23:00So they would never
23:01Suspect he could
23:02Push his wife
23:03Off a cliff
23:04It's highly suspicious
23:08Police continued
23:09To build their case
23:10By honing in
23:12On Harold's
23:13Cell phone data
23:14One of the things
23:16That people may not
23:16Realize
23:17Is their phone
23:18Receives messages
23:20And phone calls
23:20By pinging off a tower
23:22And so we wanted
23:23To see where
23:24Harold's phone
23:25Had been
23:26During various
23:27Periods of time
23:28And we were able
23:29To trace his phone
23:30Going up I-25
23:32Which is the road
23:33From Harold's home
23:34Up to Rocky Mount
23:35National Park
23:36Repeatedly
23:37Over the weekends
23:38Before Tony's death
23:39So Harold told
23:41Park rangers
23:42That he'd only
23:42Visited the national
23:43Park once
23:44As a kind of
23:45Scouting tryout
23:46Before this
23:47Anniversary trip
23:48But the phone records
23:49Then showed
23:50Eight or nine visits
23:51That he'd actually
23:52Made to this location
23:54By seeing
23:56The cell phone
23:56Tower records
23:57And seeing his
23:58Activity on his phone
24:00We realized
24:01That he was
24:01Actually step by step
24:02Planning this trip
24:04So that he could
24:05Take the opportunity
24:06To murder his wife
24:09The evidence
24:10Against Harold
24:11Was building
24:11And unbeknownst
24:13To him
24:13Tony's friends
24:14And family
24:15In Mississippi
24:16Were also
24:16Assisting investigators
24:18In their case
24:19Against him
24:19The FBI
24:21Asked us
24:21To continue
24:23Talking to Harold
24:24And be completely
24:25Non-suspicious
24:27That we're team
24:27Harold
24:28We're loyal
24:28We're on your side
24:29We're here to help
24:30You out
24:31But call us
24:32Every time you
24:32Talk to him
24:33And give us
24:33The information back
24:34We became his
24:36Safe space
24:37We became his
24:38Trusted advisors
24:39On how to
24:39Navigate this
24:40He would make
24:41Comments
24:42Can you believe
24:42They think
24:43I could kill
24:43My wife
24:44Very non-grieving
24:45Very non-emotional
24:46But very
24:47Like I made it
24:48This far
24:48And then
24:49They're gonna try
24:49To convict me
24:50Of something
24:50Or accuse me
24:51Of something
24:51It may seem
24:52Like that's a
24:53Hard thing to do
24:54Giving the information
24:55Back to law enforcement
24:56But I'll tell you
24:57It's not hard
24:58When someone killed
24:59Your best friend
24:59It's actually
25:01Pretty easy
25:04But to strengthen
25:06Their case further
25:07Investigators
25:08Needed a motive
25:10Harold had indicated
25:11That Tony had
25:12One life insurance
25:13Policy on her
25:14A 1.5 million
25:15Dollar policy
25:16Within two days
25:17Of Tony's death
25:18And before her body
25:19Had been released
25:20By the medical examiner
25:21He was asking
25:22For 1.5 million
25:23Dollars
25:24From one of the
25:24Life insurance
25:25Companies
25:27This is highly
25:28Suspicious
25:29Because it suggests
25:30That he was more
25:31Interested in financial
25:32Gain than grieving
25:34A loved one
25:34Even more unusual
25:36When detectives
25:37Started to dig around
25:38Was that Tony
25:39Didn't have just
25:40One life insurance
25:41Policy
25:42She had four
25:43We know that Tony
25:45Did not know of that
25:46Because she had
25:47A life insurance
25:47Policy with her work
25:49And indicated to them
25:50That she had no
25:51Life insurance on her
25:52Other than the policy
25:53That she drew at work
25:55She had in fact
25:564.5 million dollars
25:57Total
25:58Which would have
25:58Made Harold
25:59A very wealthy man
26:00Upon her death
26:02This is really
26:03Significant
26:03Because not only
26:05Is there now
26:05A large sum of money
26:06Attached to Tony's
26:07Passing
26:08But also
26:09Harold has lied
26:10To investigators
26:11Yet again
26:13And they wanted
26:15To know
26:15Why Harold Henthorne
26:16A supposedly
26:18Wealthy
26:18And successful
26:19Businessman
26:20In his own right
26:21Needed this money
26:24Harold had
26:25Told everyone
26:25That he had
26:26A successful
26:27Business in fundraising
26:28For non-profits
26:29For hospitals
26:30And churches
26:31And that he was
26:32The primary breadwinner
26:34Harold claimed
26:35To friends
26:35And associates
26:36That his fundraising
26:37Consultancy
26:38Had as many
26:39As 90 employees
26:40What we found out
26:42From looking at
26:43Various records
26:43And from a search
26:44Warrant that was
26:45Executed on the home
26:46And looking through
26:47His records
26:48Is that Harold
26:49Hadn't worked
26:49In about 20 years
26:51We found
26:52Business cards
26:53That he had made
26:54Pretending that he
26:56Was doing this
26:57Entrepreneurial business
26:58And the address
26:59For those business cards
27:00Was actually his home
27:01And he listed
27:02Suite A or Suite B
27:04Which was the basement
27:05And so it was all
27:07A facade
27:08And none of it
27:10Was true
27:10It's incredibly
27:12Significant that
27:14Harold had this
27:15Extreme longstanding
27:17Deceit
27:18Playing out in the
27:19Background
27:19When we're thinking
27:20About this potential
27:21Murder case
27:22That really strikes
27:23As someone
27:24Who's very capable
27:25Of extreme
27:26Manipulation
27:27And deceit
27:28And is potentially
27:29A very narcissistic
27:31Individual
27:32The truth
27:33About Harold's
27:34Financial situation
27:35Became even clearer
27:36When police
27:38Analyzed the couple's
27:39Shared banking accounts
27:40What we found
27:42From all of those
27:42Was that Tony
27:43Never wrote a single
27:45Check off of their
27:46Bank account
27:47That she was
27:48Completely unaware
27:49Of their financial
27:50Situation
27:50That is Harold
27:51Took care of everything
27:52There were no
27:53Deposits whatsoever
27:54From any business
27:55Of Harold's
27:56Because he didn't
27:57Have one
27:57So all the money
27:58Came from Tony
27:59From her business
28:00And from oil
28:01And gas royalties
28:02That were through
28:03Her family
28:04You can imagine
28:05Someone like Harold
28:07Rationalizing this
28:08Behavior
28:09Because he spent
28:10Years lying
28:11About who he is
28:12He wants to project
28:13This image of
28:14This wealthy
28:15Powerful man
28:16Of stature
28:17So you can just
28:18Imagine that he's
28:19Lived this life
28:20Of a lie
28:21And he never
28:22Wants the world
28:22To know who
28:23The real Harold is
28:24I actually think
28:25It's quite significant
28:26As well
28:27You know Tony
28:27Is a very smart
28:29Educated woman
28:30And Harold was able
28:32To maintain
28:32These lies
28:34And this level
28:34Of deceit
28:35With her
28:36And she didn't
28:37Notice any red flags
28:39And that I think
28:40Is really indicative
28:41Of how good
28:43Harold was
28:44At masking
28:44His true identity
28:47But investigators
28:48Were soon to discover
28:49Even more shocking
28:51Information relating
28:52To Harold's past
28:53In the aftermath
28:55Of Tony's death
28:56A total of 17
28:58Warnings
29:00Phone calls
29:00And letters
29:01Were received
29:01By various sources
29:03Relating to suspicions
29:04About Harold
29:05All these phone calls
29:07And warnings
29:08Said the same thing
29:09That Harold's first wife
29:11Had also died
29:12In suspicious circumstances
29:13And it needed
29:14To be looked into
29:15Harold had been married
29:16Before
29:17He'd been married
29:18To Lynn Henthorne
29:19They were married
29:19For a number of years
29:21There are a lot
29:23Of stories
29:23Surrounding Lynn's death
29:25What we know
29:26Is that Harold and Lynn
29:27Had gone on a car ride
29:29That day
29:30And they were in a remote
29:31And they were in a remote
29:31Area of what's called
29:32Douglas County
29:33That is south
29:34Of the Denver area
29:35Harold and Lynn
29:36Had been out
29:37For a night time drive
29:38On a remote stretch
29:39Of highway
29:40And they'd stopped
29:41To change a tire
29:42On their jeep
29:43According to Harold
29:44Who was the only witness
29:45Lynn crawled under the car
29:47To retrieve a lug nut
29:48That had rolled
29:49Under the car
29:50He told two different versions
29:52One is that the jack
29:52Just broke
29:53And the wheel well
29:54Fell on Lynn
29:55And the other one
29:56Is that he tossed
29:57The flat
29:58Into the back
29:58Of the truck
29:59Which then caused it
30:00To fall off
30:01Of the jack
30:02And that crushed Lynn
30:04Lynn sadly died
30:05From those injuries
30:06As she was essentially
30:08Crushed to death
30:09By the car
30:11Lynn's tragic death
30:12Was officially ruled
30:14As an accident
30:14By the coroner
30:16But one that ultimately
30:18Proved lucrative
30:19For Harold
30:20Harold was able
30:21To receive over
30:22$600,000
30:23In life insurance
30:24Against Lynn's life
30:25One of those policies
30:27Had been taken out
30:27Just months
30:28Before Lynn's death
30:29It turns out
30:30Harold had actually
30:31Been living
30:32On that insurance
30:33Payout from Lynn's death
30:34And that was
30:35What had enabled him
30:36To have this image
30:37Of wealth
30:38And maintain his lifestyle
30:40When you compare
30:41The death of these
30:42Two women
30:43Lynn and Tony
30:44Two decades apart
30:45The circumstances
30:46Are eerily similar
30:48You have their partner
30:49Harold
30:50Taking them on a trip
30:51In a remote place
30:53When he is the only witness
30:55Yet claims
30:57To never have seen
30:58What happened
30:58One of the strange things
31:00After Lynn's death
31:01Was that Harold
31:02Said to a friend
31:03That he didn't know
31:04How a grieving husband
31:05Was supposed to act
31:36And that he was trying
31:36Looking at someone
31:37Capable of murder
31:38But perhaps even
31:39Multiple murders
31:41But there were even more
31:43Shocking revelations
31:44To come
31:46Investigators found
31:47That Tony's fatal accident
31:48Wasn't the first time
31:50She had been injured
31:51In Harold's company
31:52Harold and Tony
31:53Had a cabin in Granby
31:55Which is a little remote town
31:57They were up there
31:59And late at night
32:00This is after 10pm
32:01Harold was removing
32:02Some wood
32:03From the back balcony
32:04He called Tony
32:06To come out
32:06To bring him something
32:07Or pick up something
32:08And as soon as she got
32:10To a certain point
32:11On the deck
32:12A beam fell
32:13A big large beam
32:14That would have killed anybody
32:16She had turned
32:17In a way
32:18That it missed
32:19Hitting her
32:20In a vital spot
32:21That would have killed her
32:22But she was rushed
32:22To the local hospital there
32:24They both insist
32:25That there was no
32:26Domestic violence involved
32:27That this was simply
32:28An accident
32:29But yet again
32:31A woman that Harold
32:32Is married to
32:33Has a freak accident
32:34In a remote location
32:35And Harold
32:36Is the only witness
32:37We had heard
32:38About the accident
32:39And my husband
32:41Being in the medical field
32:42Asked him about it
32:44Hey is she okay
32:44And Harold blew it off
32:46He just kind of laughed
32:47He said yeah
32:48I guess you heard
32:48I tried to kill Tony
32:49I didn't originally think
32:51That was anything
32:52To be suspicious of
32:53Until everybody said
32:54Wake up
32:54That was the first
32:55Attempt to kill her
33:01Harold Henthorne was under investigation
33:03For the murder of his wife Tony
33:05Who was found dead
33:07At the bottom of a cliff
33:08In the Rocky Mountains
33:09The net was closing in on him
33:12And he knew it
33:13During the investigation
33:15Towards the end
33:16Harold came over
33:17To the house
33:18He seemed worried
33:20He seemed drained
33:22He was a different person
33:24He was not naive
33:26To the fact
33:27That this investigation
33:28Had progressed
33:28To the point
33:29Where there were
33:30Going to be
33:31Some serious charges
33:33On him for this
33:34He said I do believe
33:35That I'm in trouble here
33:37They think I killed Lynn
33:39And they think
33:40I killed Tony too
33:41I could never do that
33:43I loved
33:43I loved them both
33:44I would never
33:45I'm not capable of that
33:46And then we got
33:47Into the
33:48More of the details
33:49About
33:49About the job situation
33:52And financial situation
33:54Tony and I
33:56He pitched it as
33:57Tony and he did this
33:58Made up a story
34:00About me working
34:01When I really don't work
34:02But he said
34:03That they concocted
34:04The whole story
34:05Of him working
34:05Because they didn't want
34:06Her parents to think
34:07That she was not
34:09Going to be financially
34:09Taken care of
34:10And I know for a fact
34:12That that is not true
34:13That was not true
34:14And I had
34:15I knew
34:15That I had been lied to again
34:18When Harold left that night
34:20We were emotionally
34:21And physically drained
34:23We had just seen the face
34:24Of a cold-blooded murderer
34:26In our home
34:29After an investigation
34:31Spanning over two years
34:33The FBI were close
34:34To arresting Harold Henthorne
34:36For the murder
34:37Of his wife
34:38But just as they were
34:39Preparing their case
34:40A critical situation emerged
34:43Forcing them
34:44To act quickly
34:45We were actually
34:46Watching his financials
34:48And what we realized
34:48Is that Harold
34:49Was moving money
34:50And he had moved
34:51Over $500,000
34:52To his brother
34:53Who lived on the east coast
34:55Far away from Colorado
34:56And that's what brought us
34:58Into action very quickly
34:59We felt that Harold
35:01Was going to flee
35:01Seven news on top
35:03Of a developing story
35:04All evening
35:05A Highlands ranch man
35:06Already being investigated
35:07For murdering his first wife
35:09Arrested today
35:10Accused of murdering
35:11His second wife
35:12On November 6, 2014
35:15Harold was arrested
35:16And charged
35:17With the first degree murder
35:18Of Tony Henthorne
35:20I was sitting in a meeting
35:22At work
35:22And I received a text message
35:25Harold's been arrested
35:26And my mind
35:28It was just a rush
35:29Of emotions
35:29Of finally
35:30This has happened
35:32Everybody
35:32Has done their job
35:34It was a great feeling
35:36To know
35:36That he would be
35:37Held accountable
35:38But there was also
35:39The possibility
35:41That he would not
35:41Be convicted
35:42The FBI was very clear
35:44With us
35:45From the very beginning
35:46That this was going
35:47To be a difficult case
35:51In September 2015
35:53Three years after
35:54Tony's death
35:55Harold's trial began
35:57In this trial
35:58There were no eyewitnesses
36:00There was no confession
36:01So they were relying
36:02On convincing this jury
36:04On circumstantial evidence
36:06Alone
36:07Circumstantial evidence
36:08Is often a very difficult
36:10Thing to build
36:11Particularly a murder case
36:12Off the back of
36:13But there have been
36:14Very successful convictions
36:16Worldwide
36:17Based on circumstantial
36:18Evidence alone
36:21The theme of the case
36:22Was greed
36:23Harold had one
36:24Compelling reason
36:25To kill Tony Henthorne
36:26Is that she was worth
36:27More dead
36:28Than she was alive
36:30When we looked
36:31At the timing
36:32Of why Harold
36:33Decided to kill Tony
36:34It really came down
36:36To the fact
36:36That Tony opened
36:37Her own bank account
36:39She was diverting
36:40The money from
36:40The oil and gas monies
36:42Into that account
36:43As well as her paycheck
36:44From work
36:45And she'd never
36:46Done that before
36:47And once she opened
36:48That account
36:48Harold knew
36:49That his facade
36:50Of being a successful
36:51Entrepreneur
36:52Was coming to an end
36:53That everyone would
36:54Find out that in fact
36:55He wasn't this person
36:57Who was fundraising
36:57For non-profits
36:58And the way he
37:00Made himself look
37:01Like such a big person
37:02And a big businessman
37:02Was all a front
37:04And how was he going
37:05To live this lifestyle
37:07This wasn't going
37:07To work anymore
37:10Well this is a case
37:11That's gained
37:11National attention
37:12A husband accused
37:13Of pushing his wife
37:14To her death
37:15To collect on
37:16Her insurance policies
37:17The life insurance
37:18Policies were really key
37:20And the way in which
37:23Harold went about
37:23Getting those policies
37:26That he lied to Tony
37:28That she didn't know
37:29She had any of those policies
37:30So he had this
37:31All this money
37:32Waiting for him
37:34To make the decision
37:35About the timing
37:36Of when he was going
37:37To, as we would like
37:38To say, pull the trigger
37:39On it
37:40And that's what he
37:41Decided to do
37:42On their anniversary
37:43On September 29, 2012
37:45Was that he was going
37:46To get rid of her
37:48The prosecution team
37:49Tried to persuade the jury
37:51That Tony's fatal fall
37:52Was no accident
37:54But a calculated
37:55And cold-blooded act
37:57We also honed in on the fact
38:00That this was premeditated
38:01And we had the records
38:02To show from his cell phone
38:04Every time he went up
38:05To Rocky Mountain National Park
38:07To show that this was not
38:09Again a spontaneous thing
38:12The prosecution also highlighted
38:14Harold's similar patterns
38:15Of behavior
38:16On previous occasions
38:19The judge ruled
38:20That the evidence
38:21From the Lynn Henthorne death
38:23And from the beam incident
38:25At the Grand B cabin
38:26Could both come in at trial
38:28And be presented to the jury
38:29This was really critical
38:31To our case
38:32In order to prove
38:33The premeditation
38:34Of the death of Tony
38:35We felt we needed to show
38:36That this wasn't the first time
38:38That he had done it
38:39As we said to the court
38:40And we said to the jury
38:42If you win the lottery
38:43It's a celebration
38:44If you win it twice
38:46It's an investigation
38:47And that's what we used
38:49With the fact
38:49That now Harold
38:50Had two dead wives
38:51Both under what we
38:53Painted as
38:54Unusual circumstances
38:58The defense really focused
39:00On the fact
39:01That this was
39:02Really a fall
39:03And the fact that Lynn died
39:05Was also a tragic accident
39:07And the two were
39:08Completely unrelated
39:11But Harold's defense team
39:12Did not call any witnesses
39:14And Harold elected
39:15Not to testify at the trial
39:17So the case closed
39:18With the end of our witnesses
39:22With the two week trial
39:23Now over
39:24The jury retired
39:26To begin deliberations
39:28With each passing hour
39:30You start to get
39:31A little more nervous
39:31That we have to prove
39:33The case beyond
39:34A reasonable doubt
39:35To the satisfaction
39:36Of all 12 jurors
39:38On each one of the elements
39:39Of first degree murder
39:41So there's just so many places
39:42Where you might trip up
39:44And where the jury might think
39:45We just didn't have
39:46Quite enough evidence
39:46And so you just don't know
39:48I was on pins and needles
39:50All day
39:51Checking my phone all day
39:52It was a day
39:53That could not pass by
39:54Fast enough
39:55Because we literally
39:56Had no idea
39:57How this was gonna end
39:59After 10 hours
40:01Of deliberations
40:02The jury returned
40:03To give their verdict
40:06The verdict was unanimous
40:08It was guilty
40:09Beyond a reasonable doubt
40:10As to the single count
40:11First degree murder
40:12So Harold Henthorne
40:13Was found guilty
40:14Of first degree murder
40:15By the jury
40:19Harold's years of deceit
40:21Had finally been exposed
40:23As soon as the verdict
40:25Was read
40:25The courtroom went crazy
40:27I mean people just really
40:29Had so much pent up emotion
40:31And they just were finally
40:32Able to release it
40:33The judge had the jury
40:35Come back in
40:36And they celebrated
40:37With the family
40:37We were in the courtroom
40:39For over an hour
40:40It was the time
40:41To finally have
40:42The emotional release
40:43That someone had heard
40:44The story
40:45And the jurors believed it
40:47And so the jurors
40:48Needed that release too
40:49They wanted to come
40:50And be with the family
40:51And say I saw you
40:52I heard you
40:54Once the verdict was read
40:55An emotional exchange
40:57Between Tony Henthorne's mom
40:58And a juror
40:59Take a listen
41:00As what was said
41:02After the two hugged
41:03Take a listen
41:03I appreciated it very much
41:06And she just said
41:08As one mom to another
41:10I feel your pain
41:12When I read the headline
41:15Found guilty
41:16I sat down and just
41:19It's like after such an intense day
41:22Being able to relax
41:23For the first time
41:24We all in the room
41:26Cried tears of joy
41:29And tears of sadness
41:30Sadness because we had lost
41:32Our friend
41:33And our sister
41:35And our mother
41:36And you know
41:37Happiness that this would not
41:39Happen to another person
41:40On December 8th, 2015
41:43Harold Henthorne appeared in court
41:46For sentencing
41:48And it was a chance
41:49For Tony's loved ones
41:50To look Harold in the eye
41:52As they read out
41:53Their victim impact statements
41:56Tony's daughter
41:57Elected not to come to court
41:58And instead
41:59She had written a letter
42:00That the family read
42:02To the court
42:03And to Harold
42:04To say that she no longer
42:05Regarded him as her father
42:07And she would only refer to him
42:08In the future
42:09As Mr. Henthorne
42:11The daughter's decision
42:12To refer to him
42:13Only as Mr. Henthorne
42:15Moving forward
42:16Goes to show
42:17The significant
42:18Emotional damage
42:19That this family
42:20Have all experienced
42:20As a result of his actions
42:22And further than that
42:24It goes to show
42:25That despite the fact
42:26That there is
42:26Any circumstantial evidence
42:28Even those closest
42:29To Harold
42:30To Tony
42:31And to Lynn
42:32Are all convinced
42:33By Harold's guilt
42:36The judge then
42:37Delivered the news
42:38That Tony's loved ones
42:40Were waiting for
42:41Harold was sentenced
42:42To a life sentence
42:43Without any chance of parole
42:45Harold will die in prison
42:46Then it was just
42:48This great relief
42:48Of we did it
42:49And it's over now
42:51I think it was
42:52The toughest case
42:53That I have been
42:54A part of
42:55And it was so rewarding
42:57To get the verdict
42:59That we did
42:59And to get justice
43:00For Tony
43:01And for her daughter
43:02It was really
43:03Quite a result
43:05That I'm very proud of
43:07Harold will spend
43:08The rest of his life
43:10Behind bars
43:11For Tony's murder
43:12His first wife
43:14Lynn's cause of death
43:15Has been changed
43:16From accidental
43:17To undetermined
43:18And the charge
43:19Against Harold
43:20For her murder
43:21Has been deferred
43:22Until all appeals
43:24Against his life sentence
43:25Have been exhausted
43:28You have two women here
43:30Who've died
43:30In such tragic
43:32Unimaginable circumstances
43:34Where the last person
43:35That they've seen on earth
43:37Is this man
43:37Their husband
43:38Who was meant
43:39To protect them
43:40And keep them safe
43:41But I really hope
43:43That for Lynn's family
43:44Who had a lot
43:45Of unanswered questions
43:46And things were up
43:48In the air
43:48About what really
43:49Happened to her
43:50That through this trial
43:52And the answers
43:53That we got
43:53About Tony
43:54That they got
43:55That closure
43:56In the end
43:57But for Tony's family
43:59There was one final issue
44:01To resolve
44:03After the trial
44:04Tony's daughter
44:05After going through
44:07The custody process
44:08Was placed with
44:09And adopted by
44:10Tony's brother
44:11Who has a loving family
44:13Very healthy
44:13Loving family
44:15She's now in college
44:16A college student
44:17Very smart
44:19And I'm very proud
44:20Of that young lady
44:21She's going to be
44:21A life
44:22A world changer
