02:52Él muertes a él.
02:55Es Escobar s' primer confirmado kill,
03:31viva o plomo,
03:31silver o lead,
03:33dinero o guantos en la cabeza.
03:35When Escobar's bribe doesn't do the trick
03:38He unleashes waves of deadly violence
03:42In 1989
03:44A war erupts between the cartels and the Colombian police
03:50At its peak, Pablo Escobar is setting off 15 car bombs a day
03:55The biggest of these is outside the secret police headquarters
03:58It kills 63 people and injures over two and a half thousand
04:06We haven't seen a bomb like this since World War II
04:09At this point, the Colombian government orders the military to hunt down Escobar
04:15But for 16 months, Don Pablo remains out of sight
04:20It's not until December 2, 1993 that authorities were able to track him down
04:26And they find him in a residential neighborhood
04:27And as they try to take him out, he runs
04:30There's the proverbial shootout in the streets
04:32He's hit with multiple gunshots, one of which is to the head
04:38And that's how the story of the great Pablo Escobar ends
04:45Pablo Escobar effectively turned crime into a corporation
04:49And he is prepared to grease the wheels of industry with the blood of his enemies
04:56He's responsible for 15 to 20,000 deaths in his decade and a half as the cocaine king of planet
05:04Earth
05:07Pablo Escobar thinks of himself as Colombia's Robin Hood
05:12But his greed and brutality bring the country to its knees
05:16He's like his idol, a mafia boss who claims to be savior of Chicago
05:23And unleashes its bloodiest decade
05:29It's a freezing Chicago morning on Valentine's Day in 1929
05:33Four men, two in police uniforms and two in suits, enter the parking garage on Clark Street
05:39Seven men from what's called the Northside Gang, a large criminal organization
05:45Are holed up in this parking garage
05:48The policemen, they ordered everybody up against the wall
05:51The men had turned their backs
05:54But instead of placing handcuffs on them, the men pull out Tommy guns
05:58And there is a hail of bullets
06:0070 rounds are fired in just seconds
06:03Leaving all seven dead
06:06The men walk out as calmly as they'd come in
06:09Leaving behind a scene so gory and lethal
06:12That it is forever known as the St. Valentine's Day massacre
06:18Thousands of miles away, Al Capone is nestled into a house in Miami, Florida
06:23The message he wanted to send was, Chicago is mine
06:26What I want done will get done
06:31Alphonse Gabriel Capone is born in Brooklyn, New York in 1899
06:36Early on, he learns he has a gift for violence
06:41At 14, he drops out of school because he hits a teacher
06:45In his later teens, he's actually working as a bouncer at a bar
06:49And he gets into an argument with one of the patrons
06:52Who pulls out a knife and they cut Capone's face
06:57The wound is so deep, it leaves a big scar
06:59That that ultimately gives him the nickname of Scarface
07:03And it happened to gain attention to Johnny Torrio
07:06The most influential criminal in that area at the time
07:10Torrio now takes Capone under his wing
07:12And in 1990, the two of them head out to Chicago
07:15Torrio starts a gang called the Chicago Outfit
07:19And their goal is to engage in bootlegging
07:23Because in the 1920s, we have prohibition
07:26Torrio and Capone are making oodles of cash
07:30And so Torrio decides he's had enough
07:33He retires to Sicily
07:35And he hands the keys to the castle to Al Capone
07:39At 26, Capone now controls
07:43One of the largest bootlegging operations in the country
07:47With Capone at the helm
07:49The Chicago Outfit makes about $100 million a year
07:55Which is equivalent to over a billion dollars in today's currency
08:01The name of Al Capone becomes a household name
08:04So when he goes out to dinners and he goes out to sports events
08:07People aren't there to see the players, the baseball players
08:11When Al Capone walks in the stadium, it's known he's there
08:14He's portraying himself to be a man of the community
08:17The guy who opens up soup kitchens
08:19The guy who gives back to the community
08:21But underneath, this is a man who is a cold-hearted killer
08:29Capone continues to have his competition murdered
08:33Witnesses silenced
08:34And there's this one story
08:37Capone hears that three of his lieutenants are plotting against him
08:40So what does he do?
08:41He invites them to dinner
08:43During the dinner, Capone breaks out a baseball bat
08:47And proceeds to beat all three of these men to death
08:50While everyone else at the table just looks on
08:56No charges or accusations seem to stick to Capone
09:00However, in 1931, authorities finally find
09:05A pretty surprising way to get Al Capone
09:09Tax evasion
09:13Al Capone is found guilty
09:14And he is sent to Alcatraz
09:18A year later, he is diagnosed with neurosyphilis
09:22And it leaves him weak and disoriented
09:26In 1939, Al Capone is released from Alcatraz
09:29He goes to Florida
09:31And in 1947, at the age of 48
09:35He dies a broken man
09:37Everybody believes he was responsible for nearly 400 murders
09:40And he created the model on how to run the mob
09:44And that is the true deadliness and legend of Al Capone's life
09:53The criminal who murders more than any other serial killer in American history
09:58Starts out in Florida
10:02January 1st, 1971, on Route 27, just outside of Miami
10:06A man and a woman are enjoying an intimate celebration in a car
10:10The woman's name is Mary Brosley
10:13And the gentleman's name is Samuel Little
10:16A 30-year-old cemetery worker
10:19And what Mary doesn't know is that Samuel is about to make her his very first murder victim
10:27And strangle her to death
10:30It turns out, Samuel Little has dreamt about choking women from a very early age
10:37He's only five years old when he develops a fetish for choking
10:41His kindergarten teacher has a habit of rubbing her neck
10:45And he is fixated on this
10:48As a teenager, he starts going down the wrong path
10:51Shoplifting, he's stealing cars, he's doing burglaries
10:54He's starting to get out there
10:56He goes into juvie, then he's in prison
10:59But when he's released, he figures out as long as he keeps moving
11:04And lives a nomadic life, he can get away with just about anything
11:08Starting in 1977, he goes on a rampage that lasts 35 years
11:16Samuel Little is the pale rider of the apocalypse
11:20Everywhere he goes, death follows him
11:23His wanderings take him to 19 states
11:25At least he targets women marginalized by society
11:30Living on the fringes that he thinks no one will care
11:33Finally, in 2012, Little is arrested in Louisville, Kentucky
11:38On a narcotics charge
11:40They do a cheek swap and put it into the DNA database
11:44Almost instantly, the DNA matches three separate murders
11:51Two years later, Samuel Little is convicted and sentenced to life without parole
11:57At this point, Samuel Little is 78 years old
12:01He's never going to get out of prison
12:03So he starts talking about all sorts of murders that he committed
12:24Through his confessions and his drawings, detectives are able to help discover the remains
12:31And close 60 cold cases
12:34And over time, Little tells the police that he has killed 93 women
12:42Making Samuel Little the most prolific serial killer in U.S. history
12:52Criminals like Samuel Little are the most feared today
12:56But not long ago, it's pirates like Blackbeard and Captain Kidd who spread the terror
13:02And in an ocean of violent male pirates
13:06The deadliest of them all is a woman from China
13:14It's the late 1700s in Guangzhou in southern China
13:18And in this particular port city, there's a floating brothel
13:22With a very famous courtesan named Ching Shi
13:26She's very intelligent, well-spoken, very charismatic
13:30And this means that she has a lot of experience working with really powerful men from a very young age
13:37In the early 19th century, that famous pirate, Jung Yi
13:42Comes in for her legendary services and falls in love with her
13:47They get married and they become partners
13:50Co-leaders of Yi's pirate fleet, the Red Flag Fleet
13:57This pirate alliance terrorizes the waters off southeastern China near Vietnam
14:03They ramp up the attacks on English and Portuguese merchant ships
14:07And they also sink 35 vessels of the Chinese Navy
14:11As the fearsome reputation of the Red Flag Fleet grows
14:16The pirates suffer a major setback
14:22In 1807, their entire pirate fleet is engulfed in this wild seastorm
14:29And Jung Yi is washed overboard and drowned
14:38The leader of this entire operation is gone
14:42But Ching Shi, she steps up and takes command of the entire fleet
14:47She builds this confederation into an even bigger and wealthier and deadlier force to be reckoned with
14:56Ching Shi commands a fleet of 2,000 pirate ships
15:0180,000 men
15:03By 1808, Shi has gained control of the waters off China's southeastern coast
15:11Then she decides to head inland, sailing up the Pearl River
15:17She embarks on a bloody campaign
15:20They sack and steal, murdering 12,000 people
15:25In order to fill the holds of her ship with stolen treasure and ransom payments
15:30The Chinese government tries to fight these pirates for years, but without much success
15:35And it gets so bad that international trade is suffering
15:39So the Chinese government ultimately wants to cut a deal with Ching Shi
15:43In 1810, the government offers amnesty to the pirate queen and her buccaneers
15:50In exchange for their surrender
15:52But Shi drives a hard bargain
15:55She demands that she and every single member of her entire pirate fleet get a full pardon
16:02And she also demands that she's able to keep up to 70% of all of the loot that they've
16:08managed to steal
16:09Shockingly, the Chinese government agrees to all of the terms
16:16So the most successful and merciless pirate in history has a peaceful retirement until her death in 1844
16:25And she never really suffers any consequences for the tens of thousands of people she killed over the years
16:35Imperial Rome is dangerous
16:38The kind of place where political conflict can end in murder
16:48In ancient Rome, the most gifted practitioner of the dark arts of poisoning your enemies
16:54Is a woman by the name of Lacusta
16:57And she becomes incredibly valuable to the Roman elite
17:03By the year 54, Lacusta is arrested and accused of poisoning multiple people
17:09Lacusta is in prison, but suddenly her skills are needed
17:14Not just by anybody
17:16But by Agrippina the Younger
17:20This is the most powerful woman in the Roman Empire
17:24And she wants her husband dead
17:29She's married to the current Emperor Claudius
17:31But she has a son by her previous husband
17:35That son is Nero, the famous Nero
17:37So she is on the lookout for a way to bump off her husband
17:42And ensure that her son Nero can gain the empire
17:46When Agrippina hears of Lacusta
17:49She has her released from prison
17:51And orders her to come up with a plan to kill Emperor Claudius
17:57Lacusta says give him his favorite meal
18:00Mushrooms
18:02They put the poison in the biggest, most delicious mushroom
18:06On this plate
18:07Claudius takes the poison mushroom
18:10And begins to feel the symptoms
18:12Minutes later, the Emperor suffers horrible stomach cramps
18:18And runs off to use the restroom
18:20They start to get worried that not enough poison is left in his system
18:24With the instruction of Lacusta
18:26Agrippina encourages the husband, he needs to vomit
18:30His doctor comes to tickle his throat with a feather to help him vomit
18:35This feather has been specially prepared
18:38By the poison master Lacusta
18:40And within two hours, Claudius, he is a royal corpse
18:45As Nero ascends the throne
18:48Lacusta becomes the unofficial poisoner of the regime
18:52And the new Emperor has a job for her
18:56Now Nero's concern is that Britannicus, Claudius' 13-year-old son
19:00Might make a play to become Emperor
19:03So he essentially schemes up a plan with Lacusta to take the kid out
19:08At the royal banquet
19:09Nero serves Britannicus a scalding hot beverage
19:14They want to evade detection by taste testers
19:17So it's this beverage that the taste tester checks
19:21That checks out okay, it's not poisoned
19:23What they do is they put the poison in cool water
19:26Knowing that Britannicus will call for water to dilute
19:30And to cool down his hot drink
19:32So effectively, they've gotten Britannicus to call for his own death
19:39The poisoner continues killing people quietly
19:42But her fortunes change in 68 AD
19:47Nero is out of favor with the Senate
19:50And he is forced to flee Rome
19:53Once Nero is deposed, history catches up with Lacusta
19:57And Nero's successor Galba leads her in chains through Rome
20:00And has her executed
20:02Her sentence is condemnation to beasts
20:06She is torn apart and eaten by lions in the arena
20:14Even though people say Lacusta was history's first serial killer
20:18It's very likely that we underestimate her body count
20:21If Lacusta does her job well, many of her victims are unknown to history
20:29Nearly 2,000 years after Lacusta kills for Nero
20:34An American criminal fills the same role
20:38This time for the Mafia
20:44It's 1960, it's Jersey City
20:47There's two men in a car
20:49Watching a man in a park
20:51And the only thing that's apparent about the man is that he's homeless
20:55One of the guys gets out of the car
20:57Walks up to the man
20:58Doesn't say anything
20:59Pulls out a gun and shoots him in the back of the head
21:04The shooter is Richard Kuklinski
21:07Who is a worker in a film lab
21:09The other occupant in the car
21:11Roy DeMeo
21:12Who is a notorious Gambino organized crime figure
21:15That wasn't just a cold-blooded murder
21:18That was a job application
21:19And guess what?
21:20He now had a job
21:23Over the course of a long and deadly career
21:26Kuklinski will murder dozens for payment
21:29But he actually commits his first murder
21:32At the ripe old age of 13
21:35He's taking a beating from a bully at school
21:38A guy named Charlie Lane
21:39And in that confrontation, he decides to fight back
21:42He grabs a large wooden dowel
21:44And he beats him to the point where he kills him
21:47He picks up the body
21:49Throws it over a bridge
21:51And Charlie Lane, his body, is never found
21:56So as Kuklinski enters his teenage years
21:59He's imposing
22:00He's six foot five, three hundred pounds
22:03He has hands like bear paws
22:04He is just perfect for the job he's about to take on
22:09He's creating a gang
22:11Advancing into burglary and armed robbery and car theft
22:15But in the 1950s
22:17Kuklinski gets married
22:19Has kids
22:20And keeps up a regular job in a film lab
22:23But what isn't known is that this film lab
22:26It's actually a video piracy racket
22:29To distribute pornography
22:32Pornography through the film lab
22:33Is what puts him on the radar
22:34Of organized crime in the region
22:36Because pornography is their racket
22:38They track Kuklinski down
22:40And they give him a good old-fashioned beating
22:43The thing is, Roy DeMeo watches this beating
22:45And realizes, this guy could take a beating
22:47Maybe I'll have a use for somebody like this
22:49With DeMeo as his mentor
22:52Kuklinski goes from street thug
22:55To professional hitman
22:57For the five major crime families
22:59In the New York area
23:01In 1981
23:03There's a guy named Louis Maskey
23:05That the Mafia was dead
23:07Kuklinski sets up a meeting with this guy
23:10And kills him
23:13Two years later
23:14Maskey's body is discovered in a park
23:16Wrapped in plastic
23:17And when police come across the body
23:19His body is not decomposing
23:21They determine that it's been dead
23:23For about two weeks
23:24Medical examiners
23:26Try to establish
23:27A more specific time of death
23:29And are puzzled
23:30When they take a closer look
23:32Under the microscope
23:34They find something that's called
23:36These ice crystal artifacts
23:38The only way that this would be
23:40In your body
23:41Is if you had been
23:43Under extremely cold temperatures
23:47After killing Maskey
23:48Kuklinski actually puts him
23:50In an industrial strength freezer
23:51For two years
23:53Because he understands
23:54That when the police find it
23:55They won't be able to determine
23:56The proper time of death
23:58Which further makes it difficult
23:59To identify who
24:00And how this man was killed
24:03That is how Kuklinski gets the nickname
24:06The Iceman
24:07The Iceman leaves a path of destruction
24:10Through America's underworld
24:12Finally
24:14In 1986
24:15Clues from a string of unsolved murders
24:19Point to Kuklinski
24:21In December of 1986
24:23The New Jersey task force
24:24Successfully arrests Kuklinski
24:26In front of his house
24:27With his wife
24:28And takes him in
24:30Kuklinski is charged
24:32With the murders
24:32Of five men
24:33On April 22nd
24:361988
24:37He's found guilty
24:38And given two consecutive
24:41Life sentences
24:42Once he goes to prison
24:44He confesses to upwards
24:46Of 100 murders
24:53It's hard to imagine
24:54When you look at those
24:55Photographs of him
24:56As a boy
24:57That he is going to grow up
24:58To be one of the
24:58Deadliest hitmen
24:59Of all time
25:04In the 1930s
25:07The Great Depression
25:08Usher's in a new breed
25:10Of criminal
25:11They're broke
25:12They're desperate
25:13And they're deadly
25:14They are bank robbers
25:16And there's one of them
25:18Who uses his trigger finger
25:20To get what he wants
25:21And he'll take down
25:23Anyone in his way
25:28Lester Joseph Gillis
25:29Is born in Chicago
25:31In 1908
25:32As a preteen
25:33He joins a gang
25:34Committing petty theft
25:37By the time
25:38Gillis is 13 years old
25:40He's arrested
25:41And put into
25:42A juvenile facility
25:43For stealing a car
25:46It's during this time
25:47That he's given
25:48The nickname
25:49Babyface
25:49He's about 5 foot 4
25:51And he's got a very
25:52Cherub-like face
25:54In 1932
25:55In California
25:57Babyface meets
25:58John Chase
25:59A bootlegger
26:01Who becomes
26:01His partner in crime
26:03Babyface starts
26:04To put together
26:05A super gang
26:06Basically his most
26:07Promising associates
26:08And they start
26:09Going on this
26:10Bank robbing spree
26:12Across the Midwest
26:13Places like
26:14Indiana
26:14Minnesota
26:15Michigan
26:16It's during this
26:18Rampage
26:18That Nelson's
26:19New partners
26:20Start to get a sense
26:22Of his hair
26:22Trigger temper
26:25In April of 1934
26:27Babyface Nelson
26:28And some others
26:29Are at a lodge
26:30Called Little Bohemia
26:31In Wisconsin
26:32During a card game
26:34The lodge owner
26:35Notices that
26:36All the guests
26:36Are carrying guns
26:37And he tips off
26:39The police
26:39When FBI agents
26:41Show up
26:41They see a car
26:42Driving away
26:43And they shoot
26:45They kill the driver
26:47And badly injure
26:48Two of the passengers
26:49All three men
26:51In that car
26:52Innocent civilians
26:53When the gangsters
26:55Hear the FBI
26:55Open fire
26:56Out the front door
26:57They exit out the back
26:58But not
26:59Babyface Nelson
27:01Instead
27:02Nelson
27:02Moves towards
27:04The gunfire
27:06After a brutal
27:07Gun battle
27:08Nelson escapes
27:09Into the woods
27:09And he holes up
27:10In a cabin
27:11That's about
27:11A mile away
27:13As the FBI
27:14Start to close in
27:15On him
27:15He just
27:16Kicks open
27:16The front door
27:17And starts opening
27:18Fire on all of them
27:20He kills one
27:21FBI special agent
27:22He seriously injures
27:23Others
27:23And then he steals
27:25Their FBI car
27:26And drives away
27:28The FBI raid
27:30Is a disaster
27:32Under public pressure
27:34FBI director
27:35J. Edgar Hoover
27:36Declares babyface Nelson
27:39Public enemy number one
27:41And gives
27:42Shoot to kill orders
27:44There's even a $5,000 reward
27:46On his head
27:47But for months
27:48Nelson evades
27:50Capture
27:51Finally
27:53On November 27th
27:541934
27:56Two FBI agents
27:58Spot babyface Nelson
28:00Driving in a stolen car
28:02In Barrington, Illinois
28:03Nelson is with his wife
28:06Helen
28:06And friend Chase
28:08When the FBI finds him
28:10There's a wild
28:11Five minute gunfight
28:13In public
28:14It becomes known
28:16As the Battle of Barrington
28:18Nelson is supposedly
28:20Shot 17 times
28:22And still
28:24Like the Terminator
28:25Nelson is still able
28:28To fire back
28:28At the agents
28:29And continue
28:30Walking toward them
28:32He shoots one special agent
28:34In the head
28:34And leaves another
28:36Mortally wounded
28:37Once the firefight
28:38Is over
28:39Chase grabs Nelson
28:41And drives off
28:44Later that evening
28:45The FBI
28:45Discover Nelson's body
28:47Wrapped in a blanket
28:48Near a cemetery
28:49In Skogie, Illinois
28:51The 1930s is full of criminals
28:53And gangsters
28:54Who make headlines
28:55But none
28:56Are nearly as deadly
28:57As babyface Nelson
28:58He is the one man
29:00Who has killed
29:01More federal officers
29:02Than anyone else
29:03In the history
29:04Of the United States
29:09Nelson's death
29:10Ends a crime spree
29:11That leaves a trail
29:13Of blood across America
29:15400 years earlier
29:17Another cold-blooded killer
29:19Terrorizes Europe
29:21His crimes are so shocking
29:23That some believe
29:24He's in league
29:26With the devil
29:29In 1540
29:31We meet perhaps
29:33The most horrific criminal
29:35Of the 16th century
29:37Peter Niers
29:38He's born to a peasant family
29:40And he actually joins
29:41A gang of highway robbers
29:43When he's 20
29:44This particular gang specialty
29:46Is robbing travelers
29:48In the Alsace region
29:49Between France and Germany
29:50Niers kills
29:52With such savagery
29:54And suddenness
29:55That even his own gang
29:56Are terrified of him
29:59He is the boogeyman
30:01For all of Europe
30:06There are claims
30:08That he's able
30:08To commit these crimes
30:09And escape
30:10Because he uses
30:10Black magic
30:11Others
30:12Swear
30:13That he's a cannibal
30:17In 1577
30:19Niers executes
30:20One of the deadliest robberies
30:22Of his career
30:23His gang hides out
30:25In a dark forest
30:26Near Neumacht
30:27And he ambushes
30:29An entire caravan
30:30Of merchants
30:33They offer no resistance
30:35And he slaughters them all
30:36Just the same
30:39Pamphlets and posters
30:41Are describing
30:42Nears' physical appearance
30:43And they're posted
30:44All over Western Europe
30:46Nears' robbing
30:48And killing spree
30:49Continues
30:50For four more years
30:52Finally
30:53In 1581
30:55His luck runs out
30:57He goes to an inn
30:58He goes to an inn
30:59And there
30:59Other guests
31:00Notice his similarity
31:01To the pamphlets
31:03Describing his appearance
31:04Upon his capture
31:06Peter Nears
31:06Is interrogated
31:07And tortured
31:09He admits to the killing
31:11Of 544 people
31:13Including 24 pregnant women
31:17He's sentenced to death
31:18And they do it
31:20In gruesome style
31:22Nears' punishment
31:24Is a three day event
31:25On day one
31:27They cut strips of flesh
31:28From his body
31:29And then they pour
31:30Boiling hot oil
31:31Into those open wounds
31:33On day two
31:35They cover his feet
31:36In grease
31:36And then they plunge
31:38His feet
31:38Into hot coals
31:39Literally
31:40Literally searing
31:41And burning
31:42The soles
31:43Off of his feet
31:44On the third day
31:45His executioners
31:46Strap him
31:47To a device
31:49Called the breaking wheel
31:50By tying up
31:52His hands
31:53And feet
31:54He's completely vulnerable
31:56And his punishers
31:58Batter him
32:00With these heavy
32:00Wooden clubs
32:03And they break
32:04Almost every bone
32:05In every limb
32:06To finish him off
32:08The authorities
32:08Quarter him
32:09And they cut
32:10Back him into four parts
32:12They display
32:13The dismembered
32:15Chunks of Peter Nears
32:16On four different
32:17Major roads
32:18So that everybody
32:20Can see
32:20That justice
32:22Has been done
32:22And the reign of horror
32:24Is over
32:30The Windy City
32:32Is no stranger
32:33To murder
32:33But one 19th century
32:35Killer
32:36Is so vicious
32:37They'll call him
32:38The Beast
32:40Of Chicago
32:44He's born in 1861
32:46In New Hampshire
32:47And his real name
32:48Is Herman Mudgett
32:49And even as a kid
32:51He exhibits
32:52An affinity
32:53For death
32:53He's obsessed
32:54With skeletons
32:55He's dissecting
32:56He's dissecting small animals
32:57As he gets older
32:58He actually goes
32:59To the University
33:00Of Michigan
33:00To study medicine
33:02While he's in medical school
33:04He comes up with
33:05This somewhat brilliant scheme
33:06He takes the cadavers
33:08From the medical school
33:09Then he takes out
33:10Insurance policies
33:11For non-existent people
33:12And when the bodies
33:13Are discovered
33:14He's the bereaved beneficiary
33:16And now he's collecting
33:17All those proceeds
33:21He makes his way west
33:23To the city of Chicago
33:24And he decides
33:26To change his name
33:27To H.H. Holmes
33:30And it doesn't take long
33:31Before he comes up
33:32With his new scam
33:33He purchases a lot of land
33:35And now he starts
33:36To build this building
33:37That will be known
33:38As the castle
33:41Holmes booby traps
33:43The castle
33:43With the assistance
33:44Of a man named
33:45Benjamin Pitesell
33:46Who's a skilled carpenter
33:47That also has
33:48A bit of a criminal record
33:49From the outside
33:50The structure looks
33:52Like any middle class property
33:54On the south side
33:55Of Chicago
33:56But its hidden passageways
33:58Will serve a dark purpose
34:00He starts inviting creditors
34:02And business associates
34:03To the castle
34:04And he locks them
34:05In a small room
34:06And he forces them
34:07To sign these
34:08Life insurance policies
34:10That say that
34:10If they die
34:11The insurance money
34:12Will go to him
34:13After getting the signature
34:15On the life insurance docs
34:17He takes shocking
34:19Next steps
34:20According to some
34:21There are these holes
34:23In each one of the rooms
34:24That he pipes in
34:25Carbon monoxide
34:27That essentially serves
34:29As an airtight vault
34:30To suffocate the victim
34:31Within the hallways
34:33Of the castle
34:33There are trap doors
34:34That will just suddenly open
34:35Underneath someone
34:36Who's standing on top of them
34:37And they are sent
34:38Directly down to the basement
34:40Inside that basement
34:42There are tables
34:43Set up for dissections
34:47There's even a kiln down
34:48From there
34:49Which is really
34:49Almost a makeshift crematorium
34:55In 1893
34:56A major attraction
34:58Comes to Chicago
34:59The world's fair
35:01The exhibition showcases
35:04Achievements
35:04From 46 countries
35:06And brings 27 million people
35:09To the city
35:10Holmes's castle
35:11Is four miles south
35:13From jackson park
35:14Where the world's fair
35:14Is taking place
35:16And people
35:16Are looking for
35:18A place to stay
35:18From May to October
35:20Of that year
35:21A number of people
35:22Last seen entering
35:24Holmes' murder castle
35:25Go missing
35:28Some of the people
35:29That go missing
35:29Include Holmes' secretary
35:31You have an actress
35:32You have a wealthy tourist
35:34And other people as well
35:35In July of 1894
35:38The police get suspicious
35:40About the disappearances
35:42In the neighborhood
35:43Holmes and his accomplice
35:45Peitzel
35:45Promptly flee Chicago
35:49They go to Philadelphia
35:51And that's where Holmes
35:53Comes up with his next scheme
35:54This one's going to be
35:55Hey partner
35:56We are going to now
35:58Fake your death
35:58To collect insurance money
36:00Peitzel agrees
36:01But what he doesn't know
36:03Is the back end
36:04Of Holmes' plan
36:06Holmes is actually
36:08Going to kill
36:08Peitzel
36:09He suffocates him
36:10With chloroform
36:11And then he burns
36:12The body
36:12To make it look like
36:13Peitzel died
36:14In a fire
36:15The insurance company
36:16Pays Holmes the money
36:17But when the use
36:18Of chloroform
36:19Is discovered
36:20In a postmortem autopsy
36:22That's when the police
36:23Are alerted
36:24And on November 17
36:261894
36:26Holmes is tracked down
36:28To Boston, Massachusetts
36:29Where he is charged
36:30With murder
36:31The trial
36:32Is a national sensation
36:34The beast of Chicago
36:36Was convicted
36:37Of murdering
36:38Not only Peitzel
36:40But also
36:41His three children
36:42Were in Holmes' care
36:43H.H. Holmes
36:45Is sentenced
36:46To death
36:47After his sentencing
36:49He confesses
36:50To upwards
36:50Of 23 homicides
36:52But some historians
36:53That have researched
36:54Holmes
36:55They believe
36:56That he may
36:56Actually be responsible
36:58For more than
36:58100 murders
37:00On May 7
37:011896
37:03H.H. Holmes
37:04Is hanged
37:04In a Philadelphia prison
37:06Holmes' crimes
37:07Are so sensational
37:09That it all but
37:10Guarantees
37:11That his legacy
37:13As the beast
37:14Of Chicago
37:15Will go on
37:16Long after his death
37:23Treason is a capital
37:24Crime in America
37:25That doesn't stop
37:26One CIA worker
37:28From turning traitor
37:30During the Cold War
37:33Aldrich Ames
37:35Is born in 1941
37:36Into a healthy
37:37Middle class family
37:37In fact
37:38His father
37:39Is actually
37:39A CIA officer
37:40And Aldrich
37:41Starts working
37:41For the CIA
37:42In 1962
37:44Ames learns
37:45To speak Russian
37:45And slowly
37:46But surely
37:47Climbs the CIA
37:48Ladder
37:49Over the next
37:49Two decades
37:50In the 1980s
37:52He's a case officer
37:53Specializing in
37:54The recruitment
37:55Of Soviet agents
37:56Ames' job
37:58Is to find
37:58Individuals
37:59Who are willing
38:00To sell
38:01State secrets
38:01And in April
38:031985
38:04He decides
38:05To sell
38:06Classified documents
38:07Himself
38:10He sets up
38:11A meeting
38:12With an official
38:12From the Soviet
38:13Embassy
38:13In Washington
38:14D.C.
38:15And offers him
38:16Some minor
38:17State secrets
38:18In exchange
38:19For the princely
38:20Sum of $50,000
38:22It marks
38:23The beginning
38:24Of Ames' career
38:25As a Soviet
38:27Mold
38:27Less than a month
38:28After Ames
38:29First approaches
38:29The KGB
38:30He starts telling
38:31Them about
38:31Soviet informants
38:32Who are working
38:33For the U.S.
38:33Government
38:34For the exposed
38:35Spies
38:36It opens
38:37A world
38:38Of pain
38:40In July
38:401986
38:42KGB agents
38:43Burst into
38:44An office
38:44In Moscow
38:45And put a
38:45Very surprised
38:46Russian general
38:47In a chokehold
38:47And there's
38:48Video footage
38:49Of this
38:51It's Major
38:52General Dmitry
38:53Polyakov
38:54A high ranking
38:55Officer in
38:56GRU
38:56The Soviet's
38:57Military Intelligence
38:59Agency
38:59Polyakov is also
39:01A spy
39:02For the CIA
39:03Two years later
39:05Polyakov
39:06Is sentenced
39:06To death
39:08By this time
39:09The CIA
39:10Knows
39:10That there
39:11Has to be
39:11A mole
39:12But they
39:13Don't actually
39:13Suspect
39:14Ames
39:14He's actually
39:15Promoted
39:16To a new
39:16Position
39:16As the head
39:17Of CIA's
39:18Soviet
39:19Counterintelligence
39:20Division
39:20He becomes
39:21The person
39:21In charge
39:22Of finding
39:23The mole
39:23When he
39:24Himself
39:24Is the mole
39:25He compromises
39:27At least
39:28100 CIA
39:30Operations
39:30And betrays
39:31Many Russian
39:32Agents
39:32Who are
39:32Working
39:33For the
39:33U.S.
39:34At least
39:35Ten of
39:35Those men
39:36Are arrested
39:38And then
39:39Executed
39:40In the early
39:411990s
39:42Ames
39:43Flashy
39:44Lifestyle
39:45Begins
39:45To attract
39:46The attention
39:47Of his
39:47Colleagues
39:48He buys
39:49A house
39:49For $500,000
39:51In cash
39:52And he's
39:52Driving
39:53A new
39:53Jaguar
39:54To work
39:55Coworkers
39:55Start to
39:56Notice
39:56His new
39:57Designer
39:57Suits
39:58And the
39:59Dental
39:59Implants
40:00That he
40:00Got
40:00And that's
40:01When they
40:01Start to
40:01Get suspicious
40:02In 1993
40:04The FBI
40:06Decides
40:07They need
40:07To spy
40:08On the
40:09Spy
40:09And set
40:10Up a
40:10Surveillance
40:11Operation
40:12That continues
40:13For ten
40:14Months
40:17In February
40:18Of 1994
40:18Ames
40:19And his
40:19Wife
40:19Are leaving
40:20Their home
40:20In Arlington
40:21Virginia
40:22And as soon
40:22As they
40:22Step across
40:23The threshold
40:24FBI swoops
40:25In and
40:25Arrests
40:26Him
40:27He's tried
40:28For treason
40:28And to
40:29Escape the
40:29Death penalty
40:30He pleads
40:31Guilty
40:31And the
40:32Deadliest
40:33Double agent
40:33In American
40:34History
40:34Is currently
40:35Still
40:36Carrying out
40:37A life
40:37Sentence
40:39The death
40:40Count
40:40We know
40:41Of
40:41Is really
40:41Just a
40:42Small fraction
40:42Of what
40:43Likely existed
40:44Because the
40:45Whole soviet
40:45Union existed
40:46Behind an
40:47Iron curtain
40:47At the
40:47Time
40:48What we
40:48Do know
40:49Is what
40:50Ames himself
40:50Received from
40:51The Russians
40:52A total
40:52Of 4.6
40:54Million dollars
40:54Which makes
40:55Him both
40:56The deadliest
40:57Double agent
40:58In American
40:58History
40:59And the
41:00Highest paid
41:00Double agent
41:01In American
41:01History
41:05A lot
41:06Of criminals
