00:24¡Oh, bueno!
00:36The first visit of the week is to Saar in Kent and the Crown Inn, managed by Emma-Louise Sims,
00:42who is joined in the competition by colleague Liv Roberts, a pair of pals from the off.
00:47I've walked into the pub and hit you straight away with her, basically.
00:50Yeah.
00:51If I haven't seen you, like, for a couple of days, I get really excited and then I have to
00:55tell you something.
00:56I think we have about five stories at once, don't we?
00:58Yeah, it's entertaining.
00:59She does, like, a good old chat.
01:02Guests with the gift of the gab can choose from one of 14 rooms for up to £115 a night,
01:07including breakfast, in a pub with pedigree.
01:11Crown Inn is 527 years old. It's quirky, quaint.
01:17Unique.
01:18Unique, yeah, it's just lovely. Everybody stays here, loves it.
01:21And when it comes to the competition, Emma-Louise doesn't anticipate any hurdles.
01:26I am very competitive.
01:28I was a show jumper for 25 years, so I think it's in my blood.
01:31It is a competition.
01:32It is a competition at the end of the day.
01:35About to arrive are today's first guests.
01:37I'm a better driver.
01:38You're not the better driver.
01:39Of course I am, babe.
01:40You're not, babe.
01:41Do you remember that car we got in?
01:43The woman had shakes because you were driving.
01:45Because I drive fast, like a Latina.
01:48Up to speed, our married couple Mark and Annie Ezekiel, of Old Town House in Margate in Kent.
01:55A pair vying for top spot.
01:57I think I'm the boss. She thinks she's the boss.
01:59Who is the boss?
02:00You are the boss because I want an easy life.
02:03OK.
02:04Guests hoping to manage a stay will find eight rooms for up to £360 a night and meet hosts reaching
02:11for the stars.
02:12Our ethos is you want a really nice bed, a nice shower, a nice decor.
02:17We want to deliver the luxury of a five-star hotel.
02:21I don't think you'll find a more comfortable stay.
02:23And when it comes to staying away, this pair don't rest on their laurels.
02:28Sleep is massive. Sleep is, I think, the number one.
02:31If you don't sleep well, you're going to wake up moody.
02:34I can't function.
02:35This is going to ruin your trip, your day.
02:38Oh, the Crown Inn.
02:42It's a lovely old building, isn't it?
02:43Yeah, it's really cute, like a move set.
02:47Hello.
02:47Hello.
02:48Welcome to the Crown Inn.
02:50I'm Emma Louise.
02:51I'm Liv.
02:52I'm Mark.
02:53I'm Annie.
02:53Tonight you're going to be staying in room five, which is £75 a night, plus £10 per person for breakfast.
02:59Thank you.
03:00Thank you.
03:00Have a lovely day.
03:01Thank you.
03:02Bye.
03:05It's nice.
03:06Decent-sized room, isn't it?
03:08Yeah.
03:08For a price, it's unbelievable.
03:09With Mark and Annie counting the cost, today's next guest is popping with paternal pride.
03:16One of my daughters is doing drama and music as GCSE options.
03:21They're doing, what is it?
03:22You know, The Hills Are Alive of the Sound of Music.
03:24Which one's that one?
03:25Which production is that?
03:26I can't remember now.
03:27Not saying adieu to your and your and your is Sharban Demibasher of Stonecourt House in Maidstone, Kent.
03:35A host born to do it.
03:38Hospitality comes naturally to me.
03:39I grew up in a Turkish family.
03:41My mum taught us our doors always open.
03:43We always would feed our guests.
03:45Doesn't matter.
03:46You can just walk into our house and we will look after you.
03:49Guests seeking shelter can pick from seven rooms for up to £160 a night in a property with a past
03:56life.
03:57The Stonecourt House is 700 years old.
04:00There's lots of nooks and crannies in there.
04:02A little nine-year wardrobe sort of feeling.
04:04It's still got the original features.
04:07But we've added the modern standards of actually making it a comfortable, habitable home.
04:13And as a guest, Sharban doesn't plan on splitting hairs.
04:17When I go away, cleansing is important to anybody, but it's not going to ruin my holiday.
04:22You know, if I find a hair in the bed.
04:24We are only human.
04:25As long as it looks clean, smells clean and fresh, and it has been cleaned, then that's absolutely fine.
04:31And that's all you should really expect.
04:34Morning.
04:35Morning.
04:36Welcome to the Crown Inn.
04:37I'm Emma Louise.
04:38I'm Liv.
04:39I'm Sharban.
04:40Tonight you're going to be staying in room six, which is charged at £75 per night.
04:44Thank you very much.
04:44Thank you.
04:45See you later.
04:47This is quite nice.
04:49Looks modern.
04:50Smells fresh.
04:51With Sharban getting a whiff of action, today's last guests have the lay of the land.
04:56It's so flat.
04:58This really is in the middle of nowhere.
05:00I might have been in the middle of nowhere, though.
05:02We're not in Kansas anymore.
05:05Off to see the wizard, our married couple Amy and Mark Culver, of Kitts-Cottie Glamping in Aylsford, Kent.
05:12A pair where opposites attract.
05:14Amy's the wacky, out-there one, no ideas off the table, whereas I'm the sensible one.
05:21He's my yin to the yang.
05:24Guests looking for balance will find five glamping units for up to £150 a night, with an optional breakfast for
05:32£10 to £35, and meet hosts who stamp their authority.
05:37So each of the accommodations is themed.
05:40The one we're in now is inspired by Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.
05:43That was one of Amy's favourite books when she was younger.
05:46Cooking Shelter's French, because my dad lives in France.
05:49And the communal area is Alice in Wonderland, which was my favourite film growing up.
05:53There is nothing that goes without the Amy treatment.
05:56And when it comes to their own getaways, this couple aim to defy convention.
06:01We've stayed in glass boxes, tree houses, train carriages.
06:05We'll always choose something a little bit quirky.
06:08Yeah, I hate bland and corporate.
06:11I really don't like posh either.
06:15Hello.
06:16Hello.
06:16Welcome to the Crown Inn.
06:18I'm Emma Louise.
06:19I'm Liv.
06:19I'm Amy.
06:20And I'm Mark.
06:21Tonight you'll be staying in room four, which is priced at £95 per night.
06:25We hope you have a lovely stay.
06:27Thank you.
06:27Thank you.
06:28Bye-bye.
06:31Oh, OK.
06:33I was expecting a little bit more character.
06:36Yeah, I thought it was going to be old-fashioned, the same as the pub.
06:38With the hosts out of the way, the guests can see if the Crown Inn deserves a royal reception.
06:43And there are little cute chocolates.
06:46That's nice, isn't it?
06:48OK.
06:49Got enough coat hangers.
06:50Nice soft pillows.
06:52I like to see a pillow protector.
06:54It's very clean, to be honest.
06:56This carpet's had its day.
06:57There's a few cigarette burns, which is not nice to know that people have been smoking in here.
07:02They cope with everything.
07:04Yeah.
07:05Good.
07:05So I don't like the layout of this.
07:07This is obviously a desk that you can't use because you haven't got a chair.
07:11Oh.
07:12It's decent-sized, isn't it?
07:14There's bits here on the floor.
07:16All of these bits here.
07:18Just seems like it has to be vacuumed properly.
07:21Not very inspiring.
07:22It's quite bland again, isn't it?
07:25Oh, what's that?
07:26Oh.
07:27Quite a lot of hair here.
07:28More hair, yeah.
07:29They didn't clean it before, obviously.
07:31Oh.
07:32Quite a nice bathroom.
07:34Oh, wow.
07:35Oh, wow.
07:36That's really good.
07:37For the price, it's amazing, isn't it?
07:38In an old country pub, you would expect a nice wooden bed.
07:43Yeah.
07:43Something that's old and in keeping.
07:46Oh, that's really nice.
07:48Yes.
07:48Really like the bottles.
07:49Pretty, isn't it?
07:50Nice.
07:50Really pretty.
07:51You've got some dirty marks, line-scale build-up on the end of the taps.
07:55Room inspection's almost over.
07:57Mark and Annie are flying high.
07:59Be like a cape, like a Superman or something.
08:02Charbon's chancing his arm.
08:04Eeny, meeny, miny, moe.
08:06That one.
08:07There we go.
08:08And Amy and Mark are all at sea.
08:10It's like being on the cruise ship with a false nine-goal.
08:19Charles Dickens wrote part of his first novel, The Pickwick Papers, while staying in Saar.
08:24And this afternoon, Emma-Louise and Liv hope to meet their guests' great expectations with an afternoon tipple in their
08:31tavern.
08:33Cheers.
08:33Cheers.
08:35Round in hand, Annie wants to uncover the host's experience.
08:39How long have you been in hospitality?
08:41I have been in hospitality since I was 21.
08:47That's for five years.
08:49Yes, thank you very much.
08:51Oh, Mark.
08:52But this is the first time that I've ever had my own place.
08:55How have you found that responsibility?
08:56I could run a pub, restaurant all day long.
08:59Yeah.
08:59You add 14 rooms into the mix on your own.
09:02Mm.
09:02Different ballgame.
09:04So do you guys literally run the place yourselves?
09:07Yeah.
09:07I'd rather do it myself.
09:09You must be so busy, honestly.
09:11And tired.
09:12Yeah.
09:13Yeah.
09:13It's a lot of hard work.
09:15It is a lot of hard work.
09:16Emma-Louise not only does the cleaning, but the guest relations, the cooking, the bar.
09:21She comes across as burnt out slightly.
09:24Next, Charbon wants the brass tacks about this boozer.
09:27So, Emma-Louise, The Crown Inn.
09:29So, can you tell us a little bit about it?
09:31Obviously, it's very old.
09:32It's £14.98, so I think it's about 527 years old.
09:37Amazing.
09:37Wow.
09:38Still standing.
09:39It's technically 15 rooms, but we don't use one room, because that's a guest's boom.
09:44When you said guest, I was like, I thought you meant like a ghost or something like that.
09:49Yeah, that's our guest.
09:50That is our guest.
09:51Oh.
09:51Mary the ghost.
09:52So, how did you find out you had a ghost?
09:54Once she started throwing things on the flock.
09:56Oh, okay.
09:56Sorry, so you have a room that is left empty, because you have a ghost in there.
10:00Yes, we don't let anybody in the room.
10:02She's very sensitive.
10:06Love the ghost.
10:10It's a lovely old country pub.
10:12For a 500-year-old pub, the furniture just doesn't work.
10:16Spectre's speculated.
10:18Mark turns talk to the week ahead.
10:21How are you all feeling about the competition?
10:23So, you know, Amy is really competitive.
10:25We're a bit kind of yin and yang like that, you know?
10:27It's really dropping me in it.
10:28I'm trying to.
10:30I am competitive, but only because I'm very proud of what we've got.
10:36You can see that.
10:37I think we all want to win.
10:38I think if anybody says they do not want to win, so I think that they have entered.
10:42Why would you enter?
10:43Exactly.
10:44Why would you enter?
10:44But are you a bad loser?
10:46I'm a very bad loser.
10:47Oh, no.
10:48I feel like Emma-Louise is literally going to take it really to heart.
10:51I can see in her eyes.
10:53She's very competitive and she won't take criticism well.
10:58With afternoon drinks downed, next, the hosts have a surprise in store.
11:03Can't wait for this evening, can you?
11:04No, I want to see what their faces are like.
11:06They're either going to love it or they're going to hate it.
11:15The first visit of the week is to Saar in Kent and the Crown Inn, where tonight hosts Emma-Louise
11:21and Liv have invited their guests to one of their pub's most popular regular events.
11:26I'm intrigued.
11:28Good evening, everybody!
11:32How are you doing?
11:33I love you.
11:34All right, well, this evening, our special guests, give them a round of applause, everybody.
11:39Oh, lovely.
11:40We're going to be doing it, Daniel, on track.
11:43Big goal!
11:44Yes!
11:47Oh, my days.
11:48Okay.
11:49Do you think we've got to join in?
11:50Well, it wouldn't be the first time, would it?
11:51No.
11:53As the game begins...
11:54You're looking nervous already, darling.
11:56Yeah, I wonder why.
11:57Don't we?
11:58The guests' numbers are up.
12:0143, 4 and 3.
12:03All right, next number.
12:044 and 5, it's 45.
12:061 and 6, it's week 16.
12:08Week 16.
12:09Oh, I'm nearly there.
12:11Oh, are you ready?
12:12Oh, can you say that into my microphone for me, nice and loud?
12:15Oh, I'm nearly there.
12:17Oh!
12:19Emma-Louise was absolutely brilliant, wasn't she?
12:21She was hilarious, yeah.
12:23I get the impression that this is something that they do all the time.
12:26It was so much fun.
12:27With Annie pipping her host to house...
12:302 and 1, it's 21.
12:31Got it!
12:32Yay!
12:34It's time to drag up some volunteers.
12:37Do you put your hand in the air for me?
12:39Tom, put your hand in the air for me.
12:40Mark, put your hand in the air for me.
12:42Right, we are looking for having three volunteers!
12:50Oh, fabulous!
12:51Right, come on, follow us this way.
12:53Come on, lads.
12:54That's what I'm going through.
12:55Next, the new recruits need transforming.
12:57Bet Lynch, eat your heart out.
12:58Oh, nice.
12:59Look at that.
13:00That's it.
13:01Arms in.
13:02Have you done this before at all?
13:04Yeah, once or twice.
13:05Once or twice.
13:06Charbon, he really went for it.
13:08What colour shall we go for you?
13:09Slap it on.
13:10Slap it on!
13:12He was really good fun.
13:13He's going to bring a lot to the table, I think.
13:14Give them a round on the floor!
13:17Oh, there you are.
13:19Leading on the floor, Martina!
13:22We've got Roxy in the middle.
13:24Roxy in the middle.
13:26And Dixie in the middle, everybody.
13:29It's really nice.
13:30Fabulous.
13:32Look at this.
13:33My face was hurting from laughing.
13:38We carry life up for me.
13:42They were good.
13:44Oh, my God, they were so good.
13:45We carry life up for me.
13:50That's so good.
13:52Everybody was enjoying it.
13:54They really all impressed me.
13:56Having wigged out, everyone heads upstairs to crash out.
14:00Well, here we go, then.
14:01See if we can get through the night on this bed.
14:03Without sliding off.
14:05Good night.
14:06Good night.
14:12The sun's up in Saar,
14:14but some have woken with a sinking feeling.
14:17I did not get much sleep last night, did you?
14:20No, not at all.
14:21I could feel the springs digging into my ribs.
14:24I was sweating as well, like, really hot.
14:27And then you got the fan from me.
14:29This mattress is a nightmare, to be honest.
14:32It feels like you're sitting in a hole.
14:34My hips are killing me.
14:35My back's hurting.
14:37My back's hurting.
14:37It's like a water bed.
14:38And then at six o'clock, some kind of banging started.
14:42Yeah, it was like pipes were knocking.
14:45Meanwhile, in the pub,
14:46host Emma Louise has some pre-breakfast jitters.
14:49Generally, my breakfast is very well received.
14:52So I shouldn't feel the pressure, but you just do, don't you?
14:57With everyone seated...
14:59Morning.
15:01Morning.
15:01Liv is out to take their orders.
15:03Good morning, guys.
15:05Morning.
15:06Can I please have scrambled eggs on gluten-free toast, please?
15:10Of course.
15:11Could I please have one bacon?
15:14Yeah.
15:14Mushrooms, grilled cherry tomatoes,
15:16and a poached egg?
15:19Please, sir.
15:20Can I have the full English, please?
15:21Full English?
15:22Just not the black pudding.
15:23Please help yourself to tea and coffee, cereal, toast.
15:26It's all unlimited.
15:28Thank you.
15:28Thank you.
15:29As Emma Louise is set at the stove...
15:32How many bacon?
15:33Four.
15:34...Sharbon wants to be rest assured.
15:36So how did everyone sleep last night?
15:39Honestly?
15:40I didn't sleep.
15:41Not great, not great.
15:42No, no, I didn't sleep either.
15:43We didn't sleep either.
15:44I just dropped off about six o'clock,
15:46and then the hot water started banging,
15:48and that woke me up.
15:49You had that.
15:49You thought that was a ghost, didn't you?
15:51I think the one I'm moving is the bloody ghast.
15:56Ultimately, you just want a good night's sleep,
15:58and we didn't get one.
16:02Night tales swapped.
16:03In the kitchen...
16:04Right, do you want to start taking these out, Liv?
16:06The hot food is ready for the off.
16:09The plate is very hot, so please be careful.
16:15The egg was nicely done.
16:17Sausages are nicely.
16:18Chilled tomatoes are lovely.
16:19It's a nice breakfast.
16:20I think, for me, bacon's really good quality.
16:22The sausage is really good, actually.
16:24I think for £10, it's brilliant value.
16:27But my beans are cold, which is a bit of a shame.
16:30I thought the breakfast was lovely.
16:31There was a lot of selection.
16:33It was well cooked.
16:35Dishes dissected.
16:36Discussion turns to the digs.
16:38When you go away, what's your favourite place to stay,
16:43and what's the worst place you could stay?
16:46I don't really mind.
16:47Everything's an experience.
16:49My preference is a five-star place, a five-star hotel.
16:53I'm hoping that one of you has got a camping or glamping,
16:56because I want Annie to experience it.
16:58You're coming to us next, and you're coming to our luxury glamping site.
17:04I was hoping for that.
17:06It's themed.
17:07Oh, yeah.
17:08There we go.
17:09I'm going to guess it's got a theme of a lot of floral, lots of colour.
17:14What would give you that idea?
17:15I don't know.
17:17Is it glamping or camping?
17:20It's glamorous.
17:22Oh, great.
17:24It's glamorous, so I'm excited.
17:27Yeah.
17:29Breakfast's buried.
17:30The guests head back to their rooms
17:31to fill out their anonymous feedback forms.
17:34How were your hosts at the Crown Inn?
17:36Great hosts, but I feel that they were a little bit overworked,
17:39and I think they're just spreading themselves too thin.
17:42Nine.
17:43How clean was the Crown Inn?
17:45First impression's great.
17:46Just hair in the drawer.
17:48I think a nine.
17:49Yeah, solid nine.
17:50There were cigarette carpet burns.
17:52There was limescale in the bathroom.
17:54The floor looked like it hadn't been vacuumed properly.
17:57An eight.
17:58How were the facilities?
18:00The room, bland and soulless.
18:02Yeah.
18:03Poor room layout, so four.
18:05I think a four.
18:06Everything you need and more.
18:07A ten.
18:08Definitely.
18:09How did you sleep?
18:11We didn't.
18:13Uncomfortable bed.
18:14Please change the mattress pipes knocking.
18:18Loudly.
18:19That's exciting.
18:20I don't think we can go any higher than a three.
18:22In fact, I think we're being generous.
18:24Very warm in the room.
18:27Mm-hmm.
18:28Managed to get over that.
18:29Unfortunately, the mattress was very uncomfortable.
18:33A six.
18:33How was your breakfast?
18:35Excellent.
18:36Well-cooked.
18:37A ten.
18:37Lots of choice.
18:39Lots of choice.
18:39Just cold beans.
18:40Nine.
18:41And now, would you stay here again?
18:44The answer is yes, I would.
18:46With this mattress, no.
18:48Neither of us slept and...
18:51The decor's wrong.
18:53It would have to be a no.
18:56Now, the guests must pay what they think their stay was worth.
19:00Agreed?
19:00Yeah.
19:01Happy?
19:01Yeah.
19:02The cash will be kept secret until the end of the competition.
19:05But for now, Emma-Louise and Liv can see if the guests thought the Crown Inn was worthy of coronation.
19:11How were your hosts at the Crown Inn?
19:13Nine.
19:14Good.
19:15Hosts working too hard, spreading themselves too thin.
19:18It's my baby and I like to do a lot of it myself and that's my choice.
19:21Yeah.
19:22How clean was the Crown Inn?
19:24An eight.
19:25Hmm.
19:25Cigarette carpet burns.
19:27We can't stop people smoking in rooms, can we?
19:28We can't keep changing the carpets?
19:31No.
19:31Lime scale in bathroom.
19:33That was spotless.
19:34And not properly vacuumed.
19:36We went over those and over those rooms.
19:38How was breakfast?
19:39A ten.
19:40Are you happy with a ten?
19:41Yes, I'm enjoyed.
19:42Excellent, well-cooked breakfast.
19:44I'm happy with that.
19:45I'm more than happy with that.
19:46Thank you for a lovely stay.
19:48Thank you.
19:48Have a lovely day.
19:49Bye.
19:50Bye.
19:51Do we think they are going to stay again?
19:53I hope so.
19:54Shall we find out?
19:54Yes!
19:55We done it.
19:58Shall we find out the next one?
20:00Yeah, come on.
20:01How clean was the Crown Inn?
20:02A nine.
20:03Very choppy of that.
20:04Nine's good.
20:05Overall, first impressions were great.
20:07That's good.
20:08Yeah.
20:08Lots of hair inside the desk drawer.
20:11We hoovered it.
20:12We hoovered it over and over and over again, yeah.
20:14How were the facilities?
20:16A ten.
20:17Very choppy of that.
20:19Brilliant.
20:19Everything you need and more.
20:22Smashed it.
20:23How did you sleep?
20:24Oh, six.
20:26Oh, OK.
20:27Very warm in the room.
20:29Managed to get over that.
20:31Unfortunately, the mattress was very uncomfortable.
20:33Everyone likes a different type of mattress getting a bit petty, I think.
20:38Yeah.
20:39Take care.
20:39Thank you.
20:40Have a lovely day.
20:41Bye-bye.
20:41Bye-bye.
20:41Come on.
20:42Ready?
20:43Yes.
20:43Would you stay here again?
20:45No.
20:46Yeah, I'm not happy with that at all.
20:48Very surprised.
20:49Yeah, I'm very disappointed with that, to be fair.
20:52Two forms done.
20:53Shall we find out the next one?
20:54How were the facilities for...
20:57No.
20:58Not good.
20:59Bland and soulless room.
21:01I wouldn't say they're bland, I'd say they've got a lot of colour to them.
21:03That is petty.
21:04Poor room layout.
21:05Well, it's laid out the way that we have to work with the space.
21:09Yeah.
21:10I do think it's harsh.
21:11Harsh, yeah.
21:12A six or a seven would have been...
21:14Yeah, acceptable, yeah, but not a four.
21:16That's bad.
21:16How did you sleep?
21:18A three.
21:19OK.
21:19That's awful.
21:20Right, OK.
21:21Absolutely awful.
21:22We didn't.
21:23OK.
21:24Uncomfortable bed, please change the mattress.
21:27All of those mattresses have all got toppers on.
21:29They've all got protectors on.
21:31We've never had any complaints, so no, we won't be changing the mattress.
21:36Pipes knocking loudly at 6am.
21:38Why, they were just suddenly at start at 6am when heating's been on all night.
21:42But it is what is, and I'm sorry they didn't have a good night's sleep.
21:46How was breakfast?
21:47A nine.
21:48Brilliant.
21:49Great value for money.
21:50Yeah, which it is.
21:52Absolutely.
21:53Lots of choice.
21:54Cold beans, OK.
21:55Don't generally serve cold beans, and nobody else mentioned it.
21:59Oh, thanks for a lovely stay.
22:00You're welcome.
22:01Thank you.
22:01It's a pleasure.
22:01Have a lovely day.
22:02Thanks, bye.
22:03See you soon.
22:04OK.
22:05Would you stay here again?
22:07No.
22:07Very disappointed.
22:09Yeah, it is disappointing.
22:11They've upset me.
22:12They have upset me.
22:13Based on these comments, I'm expecting their places to blow us away.
22:18Next time, at Amy and Mark's place...
22:21I'm looking at the bird poo on the side.
22:23There's sleep boasts...
22:24Great sleep.
22:25Great sleep.
22:26Got to be a ten again.
22:27..and weepy hosts...
22:28I'm disappointed with those comments.
22:30It hurts.
22:31I know it does, but...
22:35I'll see you soon.
22:37I'll see you soon.
22:39Bye.
22:39Bye.
22:41Bye.
22:47Bye.
22:51Bye.
22:52Bye.
22:54Bye.
22:57Bye.
