00:01:46Yes.
00:01:46Oh, that's good.
00:01:48That's good.
00:01:48Who are you?
00:01:49I am Micaiah Mustafil.
00:01:51I am 24 years old, and I am from Pine Bluff, Arkansas.
00:01:54Pine Bluff, Arkansas.
00:01:55All right.
00:01:55Oh, my God.
00:01:56Your voice is already filling up the room.
00:01:59They can hear you all the way from Pine Bluff.
00:02:02I know.
00:02:02That's what I want.
00:02:03And what do you do in Pine Bluff?
00:02:04So I am an assistant branch manager for a bank there in my hometown.
00:02:08I got you.
00:02:08And I also do singing on the side.
00:02:10I just love you.
00:02:13Morning, morning, morning, morning.
00:02:15Good morning.
00:02:17Morning.
00:02:18Thanks for calling us in this bank.
00:02:19Micaiah speaking.
00:02:20Do you have the blue bag that if somebody robs the bank, you can put the blue paint in
00:02:24the bag and it blows up on them?
00:02:26No.
00:02:26I wish I did.
00:02:28All I have is, like, bait money.
00:02:30They have the tracker, and I give that to them.
00:02:32That way I can track them.
00:02:33The bait money?
00:02:34Yes, the bait money.
00:02:37I have a lot of fun at work.
00:02:39Fun is what makes the day go by.
00:02:41If we can't have fun, then I don't want to work with you.
00:02:44Hey, I wonder if my wife has bait money on me.
00:02:47Uh-oh.
00:02:48Anyway.
00:02:49Now he's worried.
00:02:50Where do you do all your singing?
00:02:51So I sing around my town, and I also grew up singing in church, so I sing in church every
00:02:55Sunday with my family.
00:02:57So this whole family is a singing family, yeah?
00:03:00We have this saying, there's a difference in singing and singing, and we believe she can
00:03:05sing.
00:03:05She can sing?
00:03:06We can sing.
00:03:07Oh, you can't sing?
00:03:08No, we can't sing.
00:03:09What about you?
00:03:10I sing, and I play the drums.
00:03:12Oh, so you got it all going on there.
00:03:14Okay.
00:03:14Something like that.
00:03:15He can sing.
00:03:16He can sing?
00:03:17He can sing.
00:03:17I never met a man quite like you, doing all you can, making my dreams come true.
00:03:33Oh, you got the charm, you simply disarm me every time.
00:03:44As long as you drive, I'm along for the ride your way.
00:04:15Oh, he's gone.
00:04:18Oh, you, you're lonely, out for me.
00:04:28I know you're the best.
00:04:31You're past every test.
00:04:33It's almost too good to be true.
00:04:37You're the perfect man for me.
00:04:41You're the perfect man for me.
00:04:44I love you, I do.
00:04:48I love you.
00:04:54Woo!
00:04:55Woo!
00:04:58It's good.
00:04:59Oh, thank you.
00:05:00Thank y'all.
00:05:01So, so, wow.
00:05:02My cheeks, since you walked in, my cheeks have been smiling the whole time.
00:05:07You light up the room, your energy is just like, it's the energy, right?
00:05:13It's the energy.
00:05:14It's, I don't even think she still knows how great it is.
00:05:17I mean, like, there's still more.
00:05:19You didn't miss a note.
00:05:20So good.
00:05:21So strong and in control of everything.
00:05:25Easily the strongest voice we've heard so far.
00:05:29Oh, wow.
00:05:30This is, you, you are meant to be here.
00:05:34Right now.
00:05:36Thank y'all.
00:05:38Wow.
00:05:39We pray for the standout.
00:05:41We pray for the one who's going to kind of put the pressure on everybody else.
00:05:45Set the curve.
00:05:47Yes.
00:05:47Who's going to lead the class?
00:05:49You understand me?
00:05:50Yes, sir.
00:05:50It's you.
00:05:52Wow.
00:05:52What American Idol is all about is in Walt Smith's Pine Bluff, Arkansas.
00:05:57Yes.
00:05:58That just grew up shaking the raptors of a church somewhere.
00:06:03Yes, sir.
00:06:04Why have we not seen you yet?
00:06:06Now is her time.
00:06:06God's timing.
00:06:07God's timing.
00:06:08God's timing.
00:06:09Yes, it's just singing is all around what brings me peace, what brings me joy.
00:06:12And it'll just be wonderful, you know, taking this journey with you all.
00:06:18You want to get your family in here?
00:06:19I do.
00:06:20Okay.
00:06:21You know what you do.
00:06:22Good luck.
00:06:24Go in there.
00:06:25Let's hear it.
00:06:25All the way to Knoxville.
00:06:27Y'all better come on in here.
00:06:28All right.
00:06:29Watch that step up.
00:06:30Watch that step right there.
00:06:32There you go.
00:06:33How do any of y'all get any sleep with that big voice in the household?
00:06:38We don't.
00:06:39Does anybody else sing?
00:06:40We all sing, but he sings.
00:06:41Are you kidding me?
00:06:42He sings?
00:06:43Everybody sings.
00:06:43Step up with your sister.
00:06:45Come on up.
00:06:45Come on in here.
00:06:46Yeah.
00:06:47My favorite song that I like to hear her sing is Love by Keisha Cole.
00:06:50Would you mind doing a little of it?
00:06:52Just for fun.
00:06:53Go ahead.
00:06:53Just a little.
00:06:54Just a little.
00:06:55Go ahead.

00:06:56There you go.
00:06:56Go ahead.
00:06:58Come on.
00:06:59I used to think that I wasn't fine, no.
00:07:03And I used to think that I wasn't wild enough.
00:07:08And I won't waste my time trying to figure out.
00:07:11Oh, are you playing games?
00:07:14What's this all about?
00:07:15Oh, love.
00:07:17Woo!
00:07:20Never knew what I was missing, but I knew what we were kissing.
00:07:27I found her.
00:07:30Oh.
00:07:31Oh.
00:07:31Oh.
00:07:32I love it.
00:07:33Wait.
00:07:33Wait.
00:07:34Wait.
00:07:34Wait.
00:07:35Wait there.

00:07:36Wait.
00:07:36Wait.
00:07:36Wait.
00:07:38Do you know how hard it is what you just did?
00:07:41Do you know how hard it is?
00:07:43Oh my goodness.
00:07:44That was great.
00:07:45I just want to tell you, it's a joy.
00:07:49Hit him with it, Lionel.
00:07:50Should I do it?
00:07:51Do it.
00:07:52All right.
00:07:52One, two, three.
00:07:53You're going to Hollywood.
00:07:56Woo!
00:07:57Woo!
00:07:58Woo!
00:07:58Oh, take it down.
00:07:59Time Bluff, Arkansas.

00:08:03Woo!
00:08:03Woo!
00:08:06Woo!
00:08:07I worked very hard to be here today.
00:08:10I feel very proud.
00:08:12We got a golden ticket!
00:08:15We got a golden ticket!
00:08:17We got a golden ticket!
00:08:17Every day you do it.
00:08:18Think about their church on Sundays.
00:08:20Their church must be rocking, boy.
00:08:23Woo!
00:08:25Every day of your life.
00:08:28Woo!
00:08:31It's my true God, on day, on day.
00:08:36Woo!
00:08:36Our own Macaulay Mustafil has been granted a golden ticket
00:08:39to go to Hollywood.
00:08:41Woo!
00:08:43We got a golden ticket!
00:08:44We all know that she's going to be able to represent us.
00:08:47You all know she's going to be able to represent us.
00:08:48And we all know she is a golden ticket!
00:08:49Let's show her how much we love her and how much we support.
00:08:53Woo!
00:08:54Woo!
00:08:54We glorify everyone!
00:09:01You might be my favorite person that's walked through those doors.
00:09:05I think you're a racehorse, man.
00:09:08I love what you did.
00:09:09You're crazy talented, crazy unbelievable.
00:09:11If we say no to him, what are we doing here?
00:09:14Yeah, yeah.
00:09:15Boom.
00:09:15I have an announcement.
00:09:17Yay.
00:09:20It was just, muah.
00:09:22You can hammer it to bed boys any day of the week.
00:09:25I don't think we've seen a star, star, star like you yet.
00:09:34I wonder, do we have any valedictorians in this class?
00:09:37Where did you rank in your class, Carrie?
00:09:39I was salutatorian.
00:09:42But the only reason I wasn't valedictorian is because two of the classes I needed were at the same time.
00:09:48So you could have been it.
00:09:50Yeah, and I remember talking to the counselor like, this isn't fair.
00:09:54What were you?
00:09:55I was not in the running.
00:09:57You didn't qualify.
00:09:59I was known back then as Lionel Who.
00:10:03I didn't even know I was in the class.
00:10:06Oh, God.
00:10:08How are you feeling?
00:10:09Good.
00:10:09I'm excited.
00:10:10I'm nervous.
00:10:10Happy to be here.
00:10:11Finally here.
00:10:12Oh, it says idol.
00:10:14Today's the day.
00:10:16Feels incredible to have my family here because they definitely shaped me into the young woman I am today.
00:10:22And I don't know who I'd be without them.
00:10:24I love you so much.
00:10:25I've just been trying to think all the positive thoughts, manifest all the things.
00:10:30But the fact it's all today, I think, is kind of stressed me out a little.
00:10:34Oh, my gosh.
00:10:34I don't know why I'm so nervous.
00:10:36I'm sorry.
00:10:38Come on in.
00:10:39Hello.
00:10:39How are you?
00:10:40Good.
00:10:41Thanks.
00:10:41How are you guys doing?
00:10:42The sunshine yellow.
00:10:43We're doing fine.
00:10:44Tell us who you are.
00:10:45Where are you from?
00:10:46My name is Ruby Ray.
00:10:47I'm 16 years old, and I'm from Pacific Palisades, California.
00:10:50What are you going to sing for us?
00:10:51I'm singing Vampire by Olivia Rodrigo.
00:10:54Very good.
00:10:54Let's hear it.
00:11:03I hate to give the satisfaction asking how you doing now.
00:11:07How's the castle built off people you pretend to care about?
00:11:10Just what you wanted.
00:11:12Look at you, cool guy, you got it.
00:11:16I see the parties and the diamonds, sometimes when I close my eyes.
00:11:20Six months of torture you sold, some forbidden paradise.
00:11:24I loved you truly.
00:11:26Gotta laugh at this stupidity.
00:11:29I made some real big mistakes.
00:11:32You made the worst one look fine.
00:11:35I should have known it was strange.
00:11:39You only come out at night.
00:11:42I used to think I was smart.
00:11:46You made me look so naive.
00:11:48The way you sold me for parts as you sunk your teeth into me.
00:11:55You're a bloodsucker, dream crusher, bleeding me dry like a damn vampire.
00:12:06You said it was true love, but wouldn't I be hard?
00:12:10You can't love anyone, cause I wouldn't mean you had a heart.
00:12:13I tried to help you out.
00:12:15I tried to help you out, now I know that I can.
00:12:16Cause I think she's the kind of thing I'll never understand.
00:12:24I made some real big mistakes.
00:12:28You made the worst one look fine.
00:12:31I should have known it was strange.
00:12:34You only come out at night.
00:12:37I used to think I was smart.
00:12:40You made me look so naive.
00:12:43You made me look so naive.
00:12:44The way you sold me for parts.
00:12:47You sunk your teeth into me.
00:12:50Oh, wow.
00:12:54Blood, sucker, dream crusher, leading me dry like a damn vampire.
00:13:04Blood, sucker, dream crusher, leading me dry.
00:13:07Blood, sucker, dream crusher, leading me dry.
00:13:16You going right now?
00:13:17She just finished, I think.
00:13:18Yeah, I think I heard the collapse.
00:13:20I am so happy for us.
00:13:22I am so happy for you.
00:13:24Wow.
00:13:26That was right on the money.
00:13:30Thank you so much.
00:13:31If there were a thousand things on a list to check, I think you checked them all.
00:13:35I mean, I don't think we've seen a star, star, star like you yet.
00:13:40Really, really incredible.
00:13:43Your breath control is quite amazing.
00:13:47There was one point and you just kept going.
00:13:49And I'm like, when is she going to breathe?
00:13:53I'm just curious to know, what drove you to be here?
00:13:56Performing is my favorite thing ever.
00:13:58And I'm also here really for my community, the Palisades.
00:14:03We need a win after such a hard year for everyone.
00:14:06And I'm just, yeah, here singing for my family and my community.
00:14:11In January of 2025, there was a wildfire that destroyed a lot of our community.
00:14:19So much of our community burnt, like my preschool, the first theater I ever performed in,
00:14:26the home that I lived in until I was five, my childhood best friend's homes.
00:14:39It was a really, it's been a really hard time seeing the town that I grew up in completely gone.
00:14:47After the fires, it was really hard to just find joy in the little things, but it's taught me a
00:14:52lot.
00:14:52It's taught me when everyone comes together, it can be so strong.
00:14:56Well, sorry for all of that. I know the pain that that community is going through.
00:15:01And to have such a bright spot like you to come in and represent is fantastic.
00:15:07I want to vote.
00:15:09Please.
00:15:09Luke, Luke, calm down.
00:15:10I want to vote.
00:15:11Calm down. Talk about it.
00:15:12What do you want to do, Lionel?
00:15:14I want to vote.
00:15:15Okay.
00:15:16It's a yes. Big ol' yes.
00:15:18Big ol' yes.
00:15:19Luke, as big as a yes can sound.
00:15:23This was a yes. Of course it was a yes. Are you kidding me?
00:15:26That was fantastic. Come on down here.
00:15:28You're going to Hollywood Week.
00:15:30Oh my gosh.
00:15:30Go out and celebrate.
00:15:38This golden ticket was 100% for my family and my community in the Palisades.
00:15:43This has definitely been one of the most challenging years, but I've learned that I can keep powering through and
00:15:48the light will keep on shining.
00:15:50Hollywood Week is upon you.
00:15:52All right.
00:15:54That is a definite top tenner.
00:15:58That's a different kind of 16-year-old.
00:16:00I agree.
00:16:01Now that's a different kind of 16-year-old.
00:16:04Wow.
00:16:04I will give me nothing but my love for you.
00:16:11Carrie Underwood named the highest rated RIAA certified female country artist of all time.
00:16:21Hi.
00:16:24Way to go.
00:16:25Way to go.
00:16:26Way to go.
00:16:28Congratulations to our wonderful co-judge.
00:16:31Make our judging.
00:16:33I love it.
00:16:33You beat everybody.
00:16:34You slaved them.
00:16:35How does that make you feel?
00:16:36I like winning.
00:16:39Carrie Underwood is literally my favorite singer of all time since I was five and I saw her on American
00:16:45Idol.
00:16:45And the performer that Idol got to is Carrie Underwood.
00:16:48I like to love her and if I see her and meet her, I might pass out.
00:16:55Hi.
00:16:55Hello.
00:16:56Who are you?
00:16:57My name is Cameron Palmer and I'm 25 and I'm from Florida but I've lived here for six years.
00:17:03So I actually dressed up as you for Halloween after you won Idol.
00:17:08I was five years old.
00:17:10My mom is awesome.
00:17:12She sent a photo to you and I got a little postcard back.
00:17:15It's dated December 2006.
00:17:17Wow.
00:17:18And I thought I'd bring it now so.
00:17:20Hopefully it's good luck.
00:17:22Hopefully.
00:17:22I love you so much.
00:17:25What are you gonna sing today?
00:17:26Home Sweet Home by Motley Crue.
00:17:28Wow.
00:17:29Wow.
00:17:29You're already making Carrie happy.
00:17:32What just happened?
00:17:40You know I'm a dreamer
00:17:44But my heart's of gold
00:17:47And to run away high
00:17:50So when you come home low
00:17:53I'm on my way
00:17:55I'm on my way
00:17:59Home Sweet Home
00:18:04Tonight, tonight
00:18:06I'm on my way
00:18:09I'm on my way
00:18:15Home Sweet Home
00:18:20All righty.
00:18:23Cameron, you're very comfortable
00:18:26In playing and singing and emoting
00:18:29Which is really refreshing.
00:18:31You've got a nice voice
00:18:33But I just don't know if it's all the way there yet
00:18:35For Idol.
00:18:36I'm trying to place you in a setting
00:18:39Where seven songs in
00:18:41Is the house gonna come down?
00:18:43I'm still not quite clear
00:18:46On that element of it.
00:18:48Yeah.
00:18:50It's gonna be a no
00:18:51But it's a real optimistic no.
00:18:53Okay.
00:18:53You have a good voice
00:18:55I would love to like hear more fire in there
00:18:57It's just crazy.
00:18:58I know, I know.
00:19:00But if you can find that sass
00:19:02And push your voice
00:19:03Yeah.
00:19:04I think you deserve a chance to do that.
00:19:07So it's a yes for me.
00:19:08Cool.
00:19:09I'm gonna work my butt off.
00:19:14I'm a no.
00:19:15Okay.
00:19:17Before I go, can I sing it with you?
00:19:19Let's do it!
00:19:20Okay.
00:19:21That's so cool that you would ask.
00:19:25Okay.
00:19:27Can you start or do I have to start?
00:19:29Did y'all plan this?
00:19:30No!
00:19:31No!
00:19:32Alright, I'll go.
00:19:34Okay.
00:19:37You know I'm a dreamer
00:19:40But my heart's a gold
00:19:45I had to run away high
00:19:47So I wouldn't come home though
00:19:50I was hoping that the saying no part would get easier
00:19:57And it did not
00:19:59It's a no for me
00:20:01And it's
00:20:02I was like 15 years old
00:20:05And I had a chance
00:20:07And it didn't work out
00:20:08And if it had
00:20:09It would have been the worst thing that had ever happened to me
00:20:11So just
00:20:13Keep at it girlfriend
00:20:15I don't want to BS these kids
00:20:17I don't want to fluff them
00:20:18You know I want to make sure they understand
00:20:21They're not ready yet
00:20:22I would really like to see you
00:20:24Spend more time working on your vocals
00:20:27Yeah, it's a no for me
00:20:30It's a no for me bud
00:20:31Thank you for being here
00:20:32Thank y'all
00:20:33Thank you
00:20:33Thank you man
00:20:35Still the no
00:20:36You always just want to really reassure them
00:20:40That
00:20:41It's not their time yet
00:20:42I'm going to give you an encouraging no
00:20:44I want to push you
00:20:46And I want you to find some fire in there
00:20:48Thank you
00:20:48And for them to go continue their path in the music business
00:20:53Sweet home
00:20:56Tonight, tonight
00:20:58I'm on my way

00:21:08Sweet home
00:21:10There you go
00:21:11Woo!
00:21:12It was like one of the best moments of my life
00:21:14Aw, thank you
00:21:15Thank you
00:21:15They rehearsed that somewhere
00:21:17We did not
00:21:19Thank you
00:21:19Thank you
00:21:20I'm on my way
00:21:23I'm on my way
00:21:25Oh no
00:21:26I finally sang that piece of pepper out of my throat
00:21:28Oh God
00:21:28Luke, be careful
00:21:31Tonight, tonight
00:21:32No
00:21:33Yeah
00:21:34It's okay, I got to sing with Carrie
00:21:36You guys are heartless
00:21:38We are not heartless
00:21:39We are heartless
00:21:40I'm 1000% going to keep singing
00:21:42It's my whole life
00:21:43If it's what I believe I was put on this earth to do
00:21:45And I'm going to keep doing it
00:21:47All right
00:21:48I'm on my way
00:21:50Yay
00:21:52I'm on my way
00:21:53Home sweet home
00:22:00My name is Michael Garner
00:22:01I'm from Palestine, Arkansas
00:22:03And I'm a sophomore in high school
00:22:04Hey y'all
00:22:05What's up?
00:22:06All right
00:22:06Hey
00:22:06Gosh, how old are you?
00:22:08I'm 16 years old
00:22:10That's great
00:22:12When I found out I was going to be able to audition
00:22:14I started busting out crying
00:22:16Me and my mom and my dad
00:22:17We're going to give you a shot
00:22:18Are you serious?
00:22:20Yes, I am serious
00:22:21I feel like this audition could definitely change my lives and my family's lives
00:22:26But you're a long way
00:22:29He's going to do great
00:22:30We all believe in him
00:22:32We're behind you
00:22:33We love you
00:22:35I've watched Idol with my family for a long time
00:22:40This has always been mine and their dream
00:22:42I always said that I was going to be on there someday
00:22:45And here I am
00:22:46But what do you do in Arkansas?
00:22:48Other than music
00:22:49You know, deer hunt, duck hunt
00:22:51The only thing there really is in Arkansas is football games and back roads, you know
00:22:54A little bit nervous going in there?
00:22:55Yeah, I think so
00:22:56This is the biggest stage he's ever been on runs
00:22:58It's a big one
00:22:59Yeah
00:22:59What kind of music are you into?
00:23:01Country
00:23:02All right
00:23:02This man says what he says and he says what he says
00:23:06I like it, man a few words
00:23:07What are you going to sing?
00:23:08I'm going to sing I'm Still Fine by The Red Clay Strays
00:23:10Perfect
00:23:11All right
00:23:11Let's hear it
00:23:14I'm on display
00:23:18I've lost my way
00:23:20Oh God, I pray
00:23:23Let this pass over
00:23:27I lost the note
00:23:31I rocked the ball
00:23:35I've even choked
00:23:38I've even choked
00:23:39I lost my compulsion
00:23:42People here living it up
00:23:44I think they're blind
00:23:47I think they're out of their mind
00:23:51Like one of them has had this
00:23:56God's not giving me up
00:23:58No, I'm just fine
00:24:01It's just a matter of time
00:24:05Though I can feel my sadness
00:24:09I know that it should be there
00:24:12But baby, I'm just too tired to care
00:24:16Cause I'm still fine
00:24:22All right
00:24:23Thank you
00:24:27Where's he going?
00:24:29Boom
00:24:30Boom
00:24:30There you go
00:24:32Boom
00:24:32I wish you were like 20 years old
00:24:36I mean, I believe I'm ready
00:24:37You know, I'm willing to give y'all everything I got
00:24:40Yeah you are
00:24:41You're really good
00:24:41Yeah you are
00:24:42Whatever happens today
00:24:43You're on the right path
00:24:45Yes ma'am
00:24:45What you do with your voice
00:24:47Is definitely beyond 16
00:24:49Like I feel like you have a control
00:24:51And a composure about yourself
00:24:54I think I'm gonna
00:24:55I'm gonna be wrestling over here
00:24:58I think your opening was just nerves
00:25:01Um
00:25:01That look has not caught up to that matured voice
00:25:06I have to think about this while Luke is talking to you
00:25:09If we say no to him, what are we doing here?
00:25:12Yeah, yeah
00:25:12I know what you're saying
00:25:13In my opinion
00:25:13I mean, I know he's young
00:25:15But we're all saying that he sings great
00:25:21She's just playing guitar great
00:25:23And he's singing pretty daggone good
00:25:26So I look at you and I see my son
00:25:30And I would not throw him in the middle of it
00:25:35Where you are at 16
00:25:37So that's where I'm coming from
00:25:41A no for me
00:25:43A no for me
00:25:46What do we do with this young prodigy?
00:25:54It's a yes for me
00:25:55Nice
00:25:57Um
00:26:07Tears
00:26:07Tickets
00:26:11Congratulations, come over here young man
00:26:13Was that terrifying?
00:26:15I mean, flying in front of him
00:26:18We did it
00:26:18We're going to Hollywood week
00:26:20Let's go
00:26:20He's going to do Justin Bieber
00:26:21Dad scares the crap out of me
00:26:23Because I'm like
00:26:24Listen, listen, you're right
00:26:25And all I can think about is Justin Timberlake
00:26:33You can't take the mama
00:26:35You can't take the mama out of me
00:26:37I mean, since when do you
00:26:37Since when do you have a heart and you're a mother?
00:26:42Miss Carrie, I just want to say
00:26:45I'm going to prove to you that I have what it takes
00:26:54It's been a good day
00:26:57Hello, hello
00:26:58Hey
00:26:58Tell us all about yourself
00:27:02My name is Sheldon Riley
00:27:03I'm 26 years old from Melbourne, Australia
00:27:07Melbourne
00:27:08What you doing here?
00:27:10American Idol, huh?
00:27:11You're crazy
00:27:16I wanted to do music since I was a really young kid
00:27:19When I was maybe about 15 years old
00:27:21I sung at my school
00:27:24And I remember that first applause
00:27:25I was like, yeah, this is what I want to do
00:27:27I love the way it made me feel
00:27:29I love the way that it made me feel noticed
00:27:32About 10 years ago
00:27:33I auditioned for a big TV show back in Australia
00:27:37It was my big moment
00:27:39And I sung my song
00:27:42And they said it wasn't quite enough
00:27:45Just you singing it's not enough
00:27:47You said don't lie
00:27:48So I made the truth
00:27:50That experience made me doubt myself
00:27:52It made me feel I had to play a character just to be seen
00:27:55It seemed like a lie to you
00:27:57I kind of created this character that dressed up like crazy
00:28:01The most avant-garde, high fashion
00:28:03Crystals and diamonds
00:28:05And it was the thing that made people see me
00:28:07You'll be my resolution
00:28:09It just kind of took off
00:28:11I had opportunities like crazy
00:28:13Not just Australia but the entire world
00:28:15Characters of Norutia
00:28:18I've been on every TV show competition known to men
00:28:21I've done it all
00:28:22And the art was just getting crazier and crazier and crazier
00:28:26It almost felt like an addiction to be
00:28:28The most memorable person in the room
00:28:31But I'd come home
00:28:33I'd take the mask off
00:28:35The makeup, the accessories, the everything
00:28:37And I would hate the person that I saw in the mirror
00:28:40Hated that version of me
00:28:47So I took two years off
00:28:50And remembered why that little kid got up on stage that first time
00:28:54And this is the one show
00:28:56There's no smoke, there's no mirrors, no nothing
00:28:58And I said to myself if I was going to come back into music
00:29:01It would be here with just the piano and just me
00:29:03And if you don't like it, you don't like it
00:29:06I don't ever know if anyone's ever really going to want what I have to give
00:29:09Without everything that I usually put on
00:29:13That's a big part of why I'm here
00:29:15Just to remind myself that my voice is enough
00:29:20Everybody's got their version of what you just said
00:29:24You know, everybody's got their mask
00:29:26Whether it is something physical that they hide behind
00:29:28Or this certain identity that they've created for themselves
00:29:33And you know, then of course you do worry that if I wasn't that
00:29:37Would anyone still love me?
00:29:40Yeah
00:29:40You're very relatable
00:29:41Thank you
00:29:42What are you going to sing for us today?
00:29:45This is Brother by Matt Corby
00:29:47It's an Australian singer
00:29:49Very good

00:30:19Hiding under the covers with no one else to blame
00:30:23Oh, oh, oh
00:30:26You couldn't help out your own neighbor
00:30:29You couldn't tell it to his face
00:30:31You were messed up by the place
00:30:37You're cowering the corner
00:30:39Can't fight it further
00:30:42Let it out and say
00:30:48Even it passed away
00:30:56Wait there, pull yourself out of this state
00:31:02Dear, acknowledge you were a fake
00:31:08If you look here and from then you might just go
00:31:13Oh, oh, oh
00:31:19Somebody call out to your brother, he's calling out your name
00:31:24Oh, oh, oh, oh
00:31:27Yeah
00:31:29You couldn't know about your own neighbor
00:31:32You couldn't tell it to his face
00:31:35You were messed up by the blame
00:31:43Yeah
00:31:49You're crazy talented, crazy unbelievable
00:31:52Thank you
00:31:53Don't know why you ever had to wear the mask
00:31:55Because you're an amazing looking person
00:31:57You being the loudest guy in the room
00:31:59You don't always have to be that
00:32:01Being the most dynamic singer in the room
00:32:03You don't have to be that
00:32:04It's okay to just peel a layer off
00:32:07But that was impressive
00:32:09Thank you
00:32:10You're an artist, man
00:32:11And you're authentic
00:32:12I love watching someone in their moment
00:32:17You have stage presence
00:32:20It's all there

00:33:04It really meant something
00:33:05Because I went out there

00:35:20You are the brothers
00:35:21Can't deny
00:35:23When a girl walks in
00:35:26With an itty-bitty waist
00:35:28Stand around
00:35:30Thing in your face
00:35:31You get sprung
00:35:33Wanna pull up tough
00:35:35Cause you noticed
00:35:36That butt was stuffed
00:35:39Deep in the jean she's wearing
00:35:42I'm hooked and I can't stop staring
00:35:44Whoa, baby
00:35:45Wanna come with ya
00:35:47And take your picture
00:35:49My homeboys tried to warn me
00:35:52But the butt you got make me so
00:35:54It's fellas
00:35:56Yeah!
00:35:56Fellas!

00:36:20Little in the middle
00:36:21But you got much back
00:36:24Baby got
00:36:26Back
00:36:29I like you, Trace
00:36:32Luke, what do you think?
00:36:34Oh, Casanova
00:36:36I think it's probably a stretch for American Idol
00:36:39But I can appreciate your ministry
00:36:42Yeah, thanks
00:36:43Joy, humor
00:36:45I love what you did
00:36:48Thank you
00:36:48Honestly, when I tell you that
00:36:49But unfortunately, this is a competition
00:36:52Right
00:36:53I don't want to let you guys vote
00:36:57Yeah
00:36:57I'm in charge here
00:36:58I like big butts
00:36:59And I cannot lie
00:37:03I fear you, Carrie
00:37:03I know what you're saying
00:37:04I think we need you
00:37:05I think you're a morale booster for all of us
00:37:08I'm thinking of myself
00:37:09And my fellow judges
00:37:10And all the people that work on this show
00:37:12And all the joy you would bring as you go forth
00:37:15So I'm going to give you a yes
00:37:19Alright
00:37:21I'm going to give you a no
00:37:24And all right

00:37:31I like big butts
00:37:33And I cannot lie
00:37:34I never thought I would have Carrie Underwood fighting for me
00:37:40But hey
00:37:40I guess I'm just a cowboy Casanova
00:37:43He's a class clown
00:37:48It's one of her songs
00:37:52We're going to check y'all's ears
00:37:53This slice of Casanova cake is going to Hollywood week
00:37:57I feel that some things just have to be pursued
00:38:04No, this was
00:38:05That was great
00:38:07I followed you, Carrie
00:38:09What is happening?

00:38:22Can you kind of give us a little taste?
00:38:24Let's hope I remember the lyrics
00:38:26I will help you
00:38:26Okay
00:38:27She knows all the lyrics
00:38:28So just look at her
00:38:31He's a good time cowboy Casanova
00:38:35Leaning up against the record machine
00:38:39Look at her face
00:38:41You've got to get some stank face going on
00:38:42He's a gentleman in disguise
00:38:44A snake with blue eyes
00:38:46And he only got to die tonight
00:38:49I'm like fangirling
00:38:50I can't believe this is happening
00:38:51That was great

00:39:23My eyes ain't used to these rays
00:39:27I'm feeling exposed
00:39:29But I can't hide no more
00:39:33I can't hide
00:39:34As the sun shines on all of the glory
00:39:38My claws don't look so bad at all
00:39:41What was I so afraid of?
00:39:46Every part of me is a vision
00:39:49Of a portrait of Mona
00:39:51Of Mona Lisa
00:39:53Ooh
00:39:56Every part of me is beautiful
00:39:59And I'll finally see
00:40:02I'm a work of art

00:40:39And smiley
00:40:40Thank you
00:40:41And I feel like it needed
00:40:42Maybe a little more
00:40:43Staying in character
00:40:45Just a little bit
00:40:46Okay
00:40:46But you have a fabulous voice
00:40:48Thank you
00:40:49Absolutely
00:40:49Thank you so much
00:40:50Luke
00:40:51Yeah I mean surprisingly
00:40:52You got a nice country tone to it
00:40:54But soulful country
00:40:56Yeah soulful country
00:40:57And even on the song
00:40:59With the whole group
00:41:00You really had some great vocal moments too
00:41:02Okay thank you
00:41:04Let's vote
00:41:05Carrie
00:41:05I would like to hear more
00:41:07It's a yes for me
00:41:09Thank you
00:41:09Oh my gosh
00:41:12Yes
00:41:12Yay
00:41:14It's a yes for me
00:41:15Without a doubt
00:41:18Welcome to the university
00:41:19Oh my gosh
00:41:21You got it
00:41:21Thank you so much
00:41:23It's so nice to meet you
00:41:24So nice to meet you
00:41:25So good you guys
00:41:27Hey
00:41:27Fantastic
00:41:28Thank you
00:41:29Great support
00:41:32That was amazing
00:41:34Oh my gosh
00:41:35Can't really believe
00:41:36What just happened
00:41:37But it's okay
00:41:38Pinch me
00:41:41She's got a Hollywood week
00:41:49I couldn't stop looking at her baby knees
00:41:52Her what?
00:41:53Her what?
00:41:53Baby knees
00:41:55When you have like a face in your knees
00:41:57Oh really?
00:41:59Do you know baby knees?
00:42:00I've never heard of that
00:42:01I have baby knees
00:42:02Oh really?
00:42:03Right after Kate and William had their baby George
00:42:08Right
00:42:08Right
00:42:09George
00:42:09Yeah
00:42:09My knees were in a magazine
00:42:11And it was like Prince George's face is in Carrie Underwood's knees
00:42:16And I was like what the crap is going on with my knees?
00:42:20So I have baby faces in my knees
00:42:22And I can make them sing too
00:42:25You can make them sing?
00:42:26It was like
00:42:30I've got to shake my knees now
00:42:34That's crazy
00:42:53Ah there we are
00:42:55Hello
00:42:55How you doing?
00:42:56Good how are you?
00:42:57Great
00:42:58What's your name?
00:42:59Hannah Harper
00:42:59Where are you from?
00:43:00Willow Springs, Missouri
00:43:01Where did you get that dress?
00:43:03This was homemade
00:43:05If this doesn't scream yeehaw
00:43:06I don't know what will
00:43:08What kind of music do you perform, listen to?
00:43:11I grew up doing bluegrass
00:43:13My family had a bluegrass gospel band
00:43:14Went church to church
00:43:16And sang at churches
00:43:19I grew up in a super musical family
00:43:21My dad worked at the lead mine for several years
00:43:23One evening he was just feeling like
00:43:25God was calling him to do something different
00:43:27With this life
00:43:27So in 2009 my parents quit their jobs
00:43:30And we bought a bus
00:43:31And we went on the road as a family band
00:43:34The tour bus was 40 foot long
00:43:37It was bright red
00:43:38And we lived on the bus for seven years
00:43:41We just would go coast to coast
00:43:43And play banjos
00:43:44And sing for the Lord
00:43:46It was a very unconventional upbringing
00:43:48But I literally wouldn't trade it for anything in the world
00:43:59We didn't come back into Missouri until 2016
00:44:01We settled back down
00:44:03And then I met my husband
00:44:04We got married
00:44:04And we found out
00:44:06We were pregnant with our first baby
00:44:07Like four months after we got married
00:44:09Every morning
00:44:10Oh, right in the noggin
00:44:12I'm sorry buddy
00:44:13Then one turned to three
00:44:15Really fast
00:44:16With three boys
00:44:17It comes a lot of chaos
00:44:19And a lot of fun
00:44:20Same old coffee
00:44:22Sorry, why are you standing up there?
00:44:25Same old house
00:44:27Same old stuff
00:44:28It's just hectic at all times
00:44:31Mom, I need some pizza paper
00:44:33Or is he trying to mind now?
00:44:35Let's eat some pizza
00:44:36And then you can go take a nap
00:44:37Do you want to go na-na?
00:44:38No, no
00:44:40I'm trying out for the show
00:44:41Just because I want the opportunity
00:44:42To give the boys
00:44:43The same life that I had growing up
00:44:44In a bigger way
00:44:45If possible
00:44:46To be able to sustain my family
00:44:48And do music full time
00:44:52I have two boys
00:44:53They make things more interesting
00:44:55Oh, for sure
00:44:56Mine's been screaming all day
00:44:57Good, yay
00:44:58That's great
00:44:59Love it
00:45:00What are you going to sing for us today?
00:45:02I'm going to sing an original
00:45:03That I wrote called String Cheese
00:45:04You're like my favorite person
00:45:06You're wearing homemade clothes
00:45:07You're singing songs called String Cheese
00:45:10What's the song about?
00:45:11My youngest is one
00:45:12And shortly after he was born
00:45:14I had postpartum depression
00:45:15And so I was sitting on my couch
00:45:16I said I wasn't going to cry
00:45:20I was sitting on my couch wallowing
00:45:24And you have boys, you know
00:45:26Everybody wants to touch you
00:45:27And I didn't want to be touched
00:45:31And my youngest son
00:45:32I was just having a pity party
00:45:35Praying that the Lord
00:45:36Would calm my spirit
00:45:40And my son kept coming up to me
00:45:41He said, Mom, open this
00:45:42Mom, open this
00:45:43Open my cheese
00:45:44I'm like, dude, leave me alone
00:45:45With the dadgum cheese
00:45:46And I finally opened his cheese
00:45:48And when I did
00:45:48I realized that God
00:45:49Had put me in that place
00:45:50And that where I was
00:45:51In my house
00:45:52Was the biggest ministry
00:45:53That I could ever have
00:45:55And being a mom
00:45:56So I gathered myself
00:45:59And I got up off the couch
00:46:00And I quit throwing a pity party
00:46:01And I realized that
00:46:02That was exactly what I wanted
00:46:05And I kind of kicked
00:46:07The postpartum depression
00:46:08In the butt
00:46:08And I said, I ain't doing it
00:46:09There you go
00:46:10So I wrote this song
00:46:11Called String Cheese
00:46:14Do you need a second?
00:46:15I want to give you like
00:46:16Probably just give me one second
00:46:17Yeah
00:46:18Yeah
00:46:19I can't cry and sing
00:46:21So I don't want to put you
00:46:23In that position
00:46:24That is a tough one
00:46:24Here
00:46:25Thank you so much
00:46:34I think so
00:46:47I warm my morning coffee
00:46:50Up for the third time
00:46:53Miss Rachel on the TV
00:46:56With their favorite nursery rhyme
00:46:59Hot wheels and little people
00:47:02Under my feet
00:47:05Baby's crying
00:47:07It's pure chaos
00:47:08But I don't miss a beat
00:47:12Always knew that a nine to five
00:47:15Wouldn't suit me very good
00:47:17But my hours are extended
00:47:20That's just motherhood
00:47:23I never knew this is what
00:47:27My twenties would look like
00:47:30But they saved me
00:47:31Before I had the chance
00:47:34To waste my life
00:47:36One day I'll be alone
00:47:39With a hot fresh cup of joe
00:47:43Wishing that someone
00:47:45Would just drop me by
00:47:47And I'll sit and reminisce
00:47:51On times that I sure miss
00:47:54I've scattered toys
00:47:56And a baby on my hip
00:47:59I thought finding peace
00:48:02In the quiet's what I wanted
00:48:05But I'd do anything
00:48:08To go back to being needed
00:48:11To those days
00:48:14I want to cry
00:48:16Run away and hide
00:48:19But I'd worry
00:48:20About their every need
00:48:23When I'm overwhelmed
00:48:27And touched out
00:48:28They come climbing up
00:48:30On the couch
00:48:32Saying mama
00:48:32Can you open my string cheese
00:48:36I smile
00:48:38Because I know
00:48:40Meeting their needs
00:48:42Fills my soul
00:48:43Being their mama
00:48:45Is who I'm meant to be
00:48:53That's great
00:48:54Do you have more teachings?
00:48:55Oh
00:48:57My turn
00:49:00This pack is going quick
00:49:02Yeah, but
00:49:05Well, that's about the most relatable song
00:49:08I think I've ever heard
00:49:11Hannah
00:49:13Great job
00:49:14Thank you
00:49:14Great job
00:49:15Just with that mountainous bluegrass
00:49:19Sound that you have in there
00:49:20I kept thinking like
00:49:22Casey Musgraves is in there
00:49:24I kept thinking
00:49:25Certainly Alison Krauss
00:49:27Like a little dolly
00:49:28A little dolly in there
00:49:30And gosh
00:49:30Even if we got you to lean in more on it
00:49:33Fill the room a little more
00:49:34You're going to be able to move some people
00:49:36The great song
00:49:37Way to really write the moment you're in
00:49:40Yeah
00:49:40I want you to use dolly
00:49:42As the example of two things
00:49:44One, her storytelling ability
00:49:47And two, she has the ability to tell that story
00:49:50And then give us a lift
00:49:52You've got the range
00:49:54I would have loved to have found you
00:49:55Just on one of those lines
00:49:56Just hold it for a minute
00:49:58I was going up
00:50:00But then I chickened out
00:50:01Because I was crying
00:50:02Yeah, it was hard to come from a tear
00:50:03It is
00:50:04You might be my favorite person
00:50:06That's walked through those doors
00:50:07In the past three days
00:50:08You're my new best friend
00:50:11You're gorgeous
00:50:12Thank you
00:50:12Like you look famous already
00:50:15I just think you have
00:50:16Just a beautiful simplicity to your voice
00:50:19You're one that I'm going to think about
00:50:21When we leave here
00:50:22Like I wonder what song she's going to sing next
00:50:24And I feel like I'm going to be
00:50:26Just rooting for you
00:50:27I loved everything about everything
00:50:30You just did
00:50:31Thank you so much
00:50:31I mean it's a yes
00:50:32I'll go first
00:50:33It's a yes for me
00:50:33I'll go second
00:50:34It's a yes for me
00:50:36Yes for me
00:50:37Heck yeah, brother
00:50:38You get this
00:50:39You are
00:50:40Doing the Hollywood week
00:50:41Thank you
00:50:41Doing the Hollywood week
00:50:42Thanks for it
00:50:42Nice to meet you too
00:50:43I'm going to take it
00:50:45I'm going to take it
00:50:45I'm going to take it
00:50:47Just making you go under
00:50:50Hearing Carrie say
00:50:51That I was one of her favorite people
00:50:52That has walked through the doors
00:50:53I almost melted in my boots
00:50:54That's the biggest compliment
00:50:55I've ever received
00:50:56She was great
00:50:57Oh
00:50:58Goodness
00:50:59It means a lot to me
00:51:01To get up there
00:51:01And stand and represent other moms
00:51:04And let them know that they're not alone
00:51:05And let them know that they can still chase their dreams with their little people
00:51:09Some real juice on that one
00:51:12Unassuming
00:51:13Sweet
00:51:15Perfectly moldable into stardom
00:51:23Can you help me put it on the fridge?
00:51:31Good job
00:51:39Don't worry, love
00:51:40No, you don't have to wait
00:51:42She said love don't come easy
00:51:46It's a game of give and take
00:51:47I remember mama said
00:51:49Oh, I miss me
00:51:51Have you seen the guy do those
00:51:53With pins and stuff?
00:51:54Is that one of your TikToks?
00:51:55Yeah, that's TikTok
00:51:56I can tell right away
00:51:57He's on the TikTok doom scroll
00:52:03Oh, man
00:52:04I remember swearing off TikTok
00:52:06And now I'm a TikToker
00:52:11Is he down?
00:52:13Is he down?
00:52:14Look
00:52:17I'm addicted to TikTok
00:52:19I'll just go on and say it
00:52:20If anybody wants to intervene
00:52:35And now I'm actually scrolling
00:52:37Finding talent
00:52:38That somehow makes it
00:52:40In front of us judges
00:52:42Well, tell us how you made it here
00:52:44Somebody happened to see me
00:52:46That's right
00:52:48What's your dreams in music?
00:52:50I want to go from being a TikTok singer
00:52:53To a real singer
00:52:54And I also really want a Birkin bag
00:52:55Oh
00:52:57I've been everywhere, man
00:52:59Looking for you, babe
00:53:01Looking for you, babe
00:53:03Searching for you, babe
00:53:04But, Lord
00:53:05I've had a lot of no's
00:53:07I don't want to tell you no
00:53:09Because I feel like I'm responsible
00:53:10For bringing you here
00:53:11But it's a no for me right now
00:53:13Don't tell him I've gone crazy
00:53:16It's going to be a no for me this trip
00:53:18I agree
00:53:19It's a no for me
00:53:21Obviously, I'm learning that TikTok
00:53:23Has filters on it
00:53:24To make you sound amazing
00:53:26So
00:53:27Maybe I need to go find those filters
00:53:29And sing on them myself
00:53:31All right
00:53:31Tell the world how you arrived here
00:53:33I had somebody message me
00:53:35And they were like, hey
00:53:35Come on in
00:53:36Well, I might have seen you on TikTok
00:53:40But I must say currently
00:53:41I'm 0 for 2 on TikTok referrals
00:53:43People know where this is going to be
00:53:48Come on
00:53:49I think I'm going to be okay
00:53:50Yes, sir

00:57:25All right, let's hear it
00:57:26Let's hear it
00:57:26Okay
00:57:27Do you guys want this?
00:57:29Yes
00:57:29For good keeping?
00:57:30Oh, good keeping
00:57:30Sure, yes
00:57:32Let's do it, Miss Carmen
00:57:33Okay
00:57:38I woke up with a headache today
00:57:44Cause I've got a mortgage due
00:57:47And an empty bed to make
00:57:54Baby, I bet you're happy now
00:58:00Probably found just someone new
00:58:02Who's got his life all figured out
00:58:09Girl, I thought it was love
00:58:17Girl, I knew it was love
00:58:24I guess I didn't know what love was
00:58:41Good job
00:58:42You have a really pretty voice
00:58:45Like your range is really great
00:58:47You're hitting some high notes in there
00:58:49Yeah
00:58:50But it would be great if you could put some oomph in there
00:58:53Yeah
00:58:53We actually might have something to sing together
00:58:57Let's hear y'all do one
00:58:59Okay

00:59:27The future is here
00:59:30With me
00:59:34Choose me

01:00:06It was very present there
01:00:08We just got to get you to cut loose a little bit
01:00:10I think the piano is forcing you to be very proper
01:00:13Oh you should see me with a band
01:00:15Well we got to get you to the band
01:00:18That's very true
01:00:19That's very true
01:00:20I think that the only way she's going to actually understand this thing called roughing up
01:00:26Is to put her in a brawl
01:00:28The only way to put you in a brawl is to say yes
01:00:31So you can go to the next level and meet the rest of this crazy class
01:00:35And you'll understand what this means
01:00:37Oh yeah
01:00:38Okay
01:00:38So it's a yes for me
01:00:40I think your voice has definitely earned you a yes
01:00:44But I want to see some some fire
01:00:47I can show it
01:00:48I kind of believe you can
01:00:49Is a yes

01:01:00I have an announcement
01:01:18I think today I played it very safe
01:01:24But they will see the fire that is inside me
01:01:27And they will see me roar
01:01:28I concur

01:01:45Lean on the end
01:01:47When you're not strong
01:01:51I'll be afraid
01:01:52I'll help you carry on
01:01:57For it won't be long
01:02:01Till I'm gonna need
01:02:04Somebody
01:02:05To lean on
01:02:08I just might have a problem
01:02:11That you understand
01:02:13We all need somebody
01:02:17To lean on

01:02:42It made me happy
01:02:42She was like
01:02:43I was like
01:02:44Is she gonna rush the artist?
01:02:46I think it is
01:02:47Just because you know
01:02:48You did your own thing with it
01:02:50It sounded fresh
01:02:51And I feel like it was such a smart song choice
01:02:55It was just
01:02:56Thank you
01:02:57You know I'm telling you

01:03:10That the world has heard
01:03:11A million times

01:04:07I'm 22 years old
01:04:09And I'm from Murphy, North Carolina
01:04:10You still got it
01:04:12Ay
01:04:16Oh no
01:04:17When I was young
01:04:18My life revolved around baseball
01:04:20My twin brother
01:04:21Kellen and I
01:04:22Played sports
01:04:23Constantly
01:04:25Dad was dead set
01:04:27On us becoming
01:04:28College athletes
01:04:32Unfortunately
01:04:32Going into high school
01:04:34I was starting to have knee pain
01:04:35In both of my legs
01:04:36Tell me how to be in this world
01:04:38Tell me how to be in this world
01:04:39Then I found out
01:04:39That I have a congenital issue
01:04:42My legs are naturally
01:04:44In the wrong position
01:04:46Tell me how to be in this world
01:04:48I needed surgery
01:04:49I needed two lower leg realignments
01:04:53That put a stop to the dreams
01:04:55Of becoming an athlete
01:04:56Tell me how to be in this world
01:04:58It was tough seeing everybody
01:05:00Be able to get to do
01:05:01What I wanted to do
01:05:04As I'm hurt
01:05:05It kind of hit me like
01:05:07Wait, I feel better
01:05:09When I am singing
01:05:10And my twin brother
01:05:11Kellen was there for me
01:05:14He was kind of like
01:05:15My voice of encouragement
01:05:19Growing up
01:05:20Until now
01:05:20I always felt that
01:05:22His talent
01:05:22Is music
01:05:24Is singing
01:05:24And I couldn't be more proud
01:05:26Of Brayden
01:05:27Because of everything
01:05:29That he's going through
01:05:29Where he's at now
01:05:30With pursuing his new dream
01:05:32He's my hero
01:05:35The only reason
01:05:35That I hadn't signed up
01:05:37For American Idol
01:05:37Was because I was scared
01:05:40This is my dream
01:05:41I didn't know
01:05:42That I would get
01:05:43Like a

01:14:25I, oh, do not pass me, me by.
01:14:44Tell me about it.
01:14:46When you have a foundation and an instrument like you have, it's just a matter of what song
01:14:50would you like to sing? On this show, it's going to be challenging because you're going to cover
01:14:55everything from Disney songs all the way across to every event that ever happened in life in the
01:14:59music world. You can handle it with that voice any day of the week. I love what you did. Thank
01:15:04you so much. Well, great big voice. You just sang within your means. When I saw you going for the
01:15:10big note, I was like, uh-oh, uh-oh, uh-oh, she got it. All right, she saved it for
01:15:16the end. We love
01:15:17our gospel singers, but just get ready to branch out and get ready to do a lot of stuff. You
01:15:23made
01:15:23everything just seem very effortless. Your small notes were beautiful and clear and crisp. You kept
01:15:29things small, and then it grew, and by the end of it, you were just soaring. You are a really
01:15:34talented
01:15:35vocalist. Thank you. It is a massive yes for me. Yes. It's a yes for me. You got three yeses.
01:15:47Okay. Thank you. Thank you so much. Your girl did it.
01:15:58I don't even have words to describe what it felt like for them to say. We've been waiting
01:16:04for you. Like, what? Yeah. Star, star, star, star, star, star right here. She's our winner.
01:16:12She will always be our winner. I'm proud of you. I'm so proud of you. Thank you, mama.
01:16:33Julian, do you remember this kid? Yes. I've thought about him a lot. Really, huh? Ah. Hey, guys. Hi. How
01:16:42are y'all?
01:16:42Doing great. How are you guys? We're so happy to see you. We're happy to be here. One, two, one,
01:16:50two, three, four.
01:16:54My name is Julian Kalel Amansan. I'm from El Paso, Texas, and I'm 19 years old.
01:17:01Last year, I'd audition. I had no idea what to expect. Obviously, I was terrified. When I talk
01:17:08about it with my sister, we both say that we kind of just blacked out and gave a performance
01:17:14of our lives, I guess.
01:17:17There's a hole in my chest
01:17:22Knock me down, leave me to rest
01:17:27Drown my thoughts with kerosene
01:17:30I performed an original song called Surrender, which talks about the struggles of anxiety and depression.
01:17:36No, I surrender. If his war did I have waged, I'll raise a flag. My fate is in his hands.
01:17:45I felt like I was at your show just now. Are you serious? Yeah, I did. Wow.
01:17:49It played like a record. He's a star. He's a star. Just a straight up, straight up star.
01:17:57I'll be gone without a sound when my heart fails me and I'm not around.
01:18:01Yes. Yes. Yes. Hallelujah. Yes.
01:18:05Hallelujah. Come on, man. Let's go. Come here.
01:18:07The things that the judges told me, I felt like my life was changing in that moment.
01:18:12He may win this thing. He literally might win it.
01:18:17It was one of the greatest moments of my life.
01:18:20Oh, I surrender.
01:18:26Unfortunately, though, I was not able to continue forward.
01:18:31There were shared concerns about my abilities to balance a journey like American Idol and my mental health.
01:18:42I was diagnosed with anxiety and depression my freshman year of high school.
01:18:46But I had been struggling with those feelings for a big part of my life.
01:18:51I mean, through even elementary and middle school.
01:18:54He came up to us and said, I am not okay. There's something happening with me.
01:18:59I mean, it's a knife to your chest because you're thinking, you know, what's going on? What's happening?
01:19:06And he said, I'm sad all the time.
01:19:11For me, anxiety is just like a big wave crashing on you and you just drown.
01:19:20I was pushing the value of my life.
01:19:24You have to look in the mirror and recognize that mental health professionals need to get involved.
01:19:31And that there's no shame in that.
01:19:39Music is my lifeline. It's what keeps me grounded.
01:19:45I had so much to smile about with my audition.
01:19:48Oh, wow.
01:19:48And I just knew, like, I really regret it if I didn't give this another shot.
01:19:52I'm just hoping that whatever I'm doing just reflects the message of just not giving up.
01:19:58And most importantly, to not be defined by your struggles, but by your strengths.
01:20:04I choke up just thinking about it because I'm very lucky to be here.
01:20:08You know, life is a gift.
01:20:11For you to come back out here to try this, we are very happy and proud of you.
01:20:16We are so happy to be here. Thank you so much.
01:20:18So, what are you going to do for us?
01:20:20The song today is called Long Guitar.
01:20:22I wrote it at a very dark time in my life where I was at a crossroads of deciding whether
01:20:27or not to give up or to keep going.
01:20:29And found that, you know, it's as simple as just stay one more day.
01:20:34That's the message.
01:20:36It's been rough. We've had some rough years.
01:20:39And this song in particular, it's suicide prevention, basically.
01:20:51What do you see when you look at me?
01:20:57The blessings that I'm letting go, Lord, you forgive so easily.
01:21:02It's getting harder to find peace.
01:21:07I get the chance to grow old, but I'm not the man that I should.
01:21:12Never felt travel, hell and by every night.
01:21:17Too far gone for prayer.
01:21:19Just a boy afraid to die.
01:21:26Oh, heartache stare, words unspoken, the burden of my flaws.
01:21:32An empty chair, a family broken, pain is all I cause.
01:21:37I should stay.
01:21:39I should stay.
01:21:42You walk in daydream, thoughts unholy, damn near giving up.
01:21:47Hug your mama till there's just enough to see that old sun rise.
01:21:54Mmm, I should stay.
01:21:59I should stay.
01:22:01Oh, I'll stitch bones and learn to love these remarks along the way.
01:22:06Oh, I should stay.
01:22:08Lord, let me stay.
01:22:12I got too much to give.
01:22:14I gotta love you.
01:22:16So say don't wanna make my old man cry.
01:22:19Leave my mama screaming why.
01:22:21Guess I'm in this bleeding heart, lighthead in my way.
01:22:28To the boy alone in the suffering, thinking no one understands.
01:22:33If it's strength that you need, you don't have to be a man.
01:22:45Awesome.
01:22:47Ronald, what you think?
01:22:48Welcome back.
01:22:50Welcome back.
01:22:51I'm gonna leave you with some words that I keep repeating over and over again, and I'm gonna pass it
01:22:57on to you.
01:22:58You were born enough.
01:23:00I haven't seen too many years.
01:23:01Come on, Julian.
01:23:04That I have feared and I have loved.
01:23:06Ah!
01:23:06Everything about you is just honest, and you organize your thoughts and your feelings into song in a way that
01:23:14comes across so real.
01:23:18That is something that's needed.
01:23:20Very much.
01:23:21Yeah, man.
01:23:22You got the magic.
01:23:30I think that you're incredible.
01:23:32I think you have all the skills and tools of a great singer.
01:23:35So glad you're back, and we'll just have fun with this thing.
01:23:38How about that?
01:23:38Absolutely.
01:23:44What do you think, Lionel?
01:23:47Say yes for me.
01:23:49Yes for me.
01:23:51Yes for me.
01:23:53Let's go.
01:23:54Thank you guys.
01:23:55Thank you so much.
01:23:56Welcome to Hollywood Week, friend.
01:23:58We're back.
01:23:58My parents.
01:24:00You did it, Nico.
01:24:02Carissa.
01:24:03Carissa.
01:24:05You did it, Nico.
01:24:06Congratulations.
01:24:10I just felt understood.
01:24:12I felt seen for the artist that I try to be.
01:24:16I want to spread my message.
01:24:18You are loved, and everyone is born enough.
01:24:21Everyone is, in fact, born enough.
01:24:29You're one of my absolute favorites.
01:24:32God bless you with an instrument.
01:24:34The first time I've had full-body chills the whole time.
01:24:37Oh, my God.
01:24:40You can't learn what you just did.
01:24:42You are a star.
01:24:46No way!
01:24:48Hello.
01:24:49Everybody want to sing for us?
01:24:50Oh, man.
01:24:51I'm sorry.
01:24:52You're going to Hollywood Week.
01:24:54Yes!
01:24:57You were born to sing.
01:24:59You are a star.
01:25:03I'm sorry.
01:25:04I'm sorry.
