00:30Stories from the Battle of the Bulge become the stuff of legend
00:35Spanish conquistadors take on a mighty empire and pay a terrible price
00:42The Aztecs capture several conquistadors who are taken to the top of the Great Pyramid
00:47Their beating hearts are ripped from their chests
00:50And a surprise attack on a U.S. Marine base unleashes hellfire from above
00:55Just like the water pours over Niagara Falls, the bombs just rain from the sky
01:01These are battles so destructive, so disastrous, and so devastating
01:08They can only be among history's deadliest
01:18It's 216 B.C.
01:21A brilliant young general from Carthage is about to launch a killer attack against Rome
01:26It'll kill thousands of soldiers
01:33We're near the town of Cannae in southern Italy
01:35On one side are the Romans
01:37On the other side, the drastically outnumbered Carthaginians
01:40But the Carthaginians have an advantage
01:42They're led by a man named Hannibal
01:45Hannibal has been planning this confrontation for over two years
01:49And is ready to enter Iberia, modern-day Spain
01:55Rome sends troops to southern Italy to prepare against a possible Carthaginian invasion
02:00Hannibal knows that in order to win, he needs to take the war into Italy itself
02:05But between Iberia and Rome are thousands of enemy soldiers and ships
02:11So Hannibal makes a bold move to avoid his enemy
02:15Hannibal hatches an amazing plan to bring infantry, cavalry, and 37 elephants across the Alps into Italy
02:23Walking war elephants over the Alps
02:27The whole plan is crazy
02:28That's why it's so brilliant
02:29But it does put Hannibal where the Romans don't expect him to be
02:34Roman troops are in the wrong position entirely
02:37They have to scramble to assemble their legions
02:40To confront this enemy that has suddenly arrived at the back door
02:43Meanwhile, Hannibal raids villages and Roman supply lines
02:48But when he attacks a supply depot near the town of Cannae
02:52The Roman Senate finally says, enough
02:56The Roman Senate send an army that is the largest they've ever assembled
03:0080,000 men
03:02Hannibal has a plan
03:04He places himself directly at the center of his formation
03:07With his weakest troops
03:09His Iberian and Celtic foot soldiers
03:12Hannibal knows that his foot soldiers cannot win the battle against Rome
03:16What he does have is a massive advantage in cavalry
03:19The Numidian cavalry, incredibly skilled horse people
03:23Incredibly skilled with the javelin
03:25Incredibly skilled at maneuvering
03:27What Hannibal does is this kind of pincer movement
03:30Where his infantry in the center fall back
03:33The Romans are lured in
03:35And that's when Hannibal closes the vice
03:38The Carthaginian cavalry springs into action
03:41And they seal the last possible escape for the Romans
03:44They're now completely encircled
03:46There's sounds coming from all sides
03:49People screaming, slipping in the mud
03:51You can barely defend yourself
03:53Panic begins to spread through the Roman army
03:55And Hannibal's soldiers pick off
03:57Group after group, row after row
04:01An estimated 65,000 are killed
04:04That's 20% of the fighting age men in Rome at the time
04:08Lost in a single day
04:12Hannibal, on the other hand
04:13Only loses about 8,000 men
04:16It is one of the greatest military victories
04:20A human being has ever won
04:21And from the Roman perspective
04:23One of the greatest military defeats
04:25Anyone has ever suffered
04:29Some daring schemes bring victory
04:32Others disaster
04:34Take what happens when Japan
04:37Battles against American troops
04:39On one Pacific island
04:45October of 1944
04:47The Allies have the Germans on the run in Europe
04:50But in the Pacific
04:52There's no indication
04:54The Japanese are going to quit anytime soon
04:56For the Americans
04:57A crucial step towards defeating the Japanese
05:00Is retaking the Philippine Islands
05:03The hub of Japan's war supply pipeline
05:06It's October 20th, 1944
05:08And Douglas MacArthur is returning
05:10To retake the Philippines from the Japanese
05:12With a major invasion at Leyte Gulf
05:15The Japanese Navy is completely outgunned
05:18By the American forces
05:19The Japanese have 67 ships or aircraft carriers
05:23The United States has three or four hundred ships
05:26They've got 16 large fleet carriers
05:28They have hundreds of different support ships
05:30The American forces don't know
05:32Is that the Japanese have a plan laying in wait
05:35And it starts with the largest naval battle in history
05:38It's known as Shogo One
05:41And it's the brainchild of Japanese Vice Admiral Takeo Kurita
05:45It will divide the Japanese fleet into three patillas
05:49That will attack the American invasion force
05:52From three different directions
05:54The key of Shogo One
05:56Is for them to send their few remaining aircraft carriers
06:00North of Leyte as a decoy
06:03They're hoping the American Admiral Bull Halsey
06:06Will take the bait
06:06And pull away his third fleet from Leyte
06:09And give chase
06:10That will leave the ships that are supporting
06:12MacArthur's invasion in Leyte undefended
06:15And two other forces
06:16One coming from the center
06:18And one coming from the south
06:19Will then converge on those
06:20Kurita to the north
06:22Will come together in a pincer movement
06:24And they will meet at Leyte Gulf
06:27And overwhelm the American amphibious landing
06:29But almost immediately
06:31The elaborate plan begins to unravel
06:34They are spied by two U.S. submarines
06:37As a matter of fact
06:38The ship that Kurita is on
06:39Is sunk by one of the submarines
06:44He has to be fished out of the water
06:46While the Japanese scramble to recover
06:49American recon planes spot a target
06:52They've been searching for
06:53Japan's notorious super battleship
06:56Named after the most famous samurai
06:59Who ever lived
07:00The Musashi is the biggest
07:03Most powerful naval ship in the world ever
07:06It is engaged by U.S. naval aviation
07:09Hellcat fighters, helldivers
07:13And Avenger torpedo planes
07:14Attack that force
07:1619 torpedoes
07:1917 bombs
07:20Direct hit
07:21She starts the list
07:23And she capsizes
07:25And she takes
07:261,000 Imperial Navy souls with her
07:29Oddly
07:30The destruction of their prized battleship
07:33Could spell good news
07:35For the Japanese
07:36The Americans become convinced
07:38That that central force
07:40Has been defeated
07:41And turned back
07:42Halsey
07:43Turns his attention
07:44To the Japanese aircraft carriers
07:46In the north
07:46He takes all the warships
07:48Leaving the base vulnerable
07:50Kurita's force reverses course
07:52Leaving the Americans to believe
07:54That they have been repulsed
07:56They reverse course again
07:57And then move through
07:58San Bernardino Strait
07:59To approach Leyte from the north
08:02There's an American naval force there
08:04Providing protection
08:05But it's lightly armed
08:07The small American escort vessels
08:10Are no match
08:11For Kurita's battleships
08:13But just as victory
08:14Is at hand for the Japanese
08:17Kurita flinches
08:18Kurita becomes convinced
08:20That he is outnumbered
08:22He thinks that the plan has failed
08:23And that Halsey is coming for him
08:25And just at the point
08:26When they have the advantage
08:28Kurita orders them to turn around
08:30And sail back through
08:32San Bernardino Strait
08:33MacArthur would later call
08:35This piece of luck
08:36Nothing short
08:37Of divine intervention
08:38The Japanese southern force
08:41Retreats into a trap
08:43Laid by the U.S. Navy 7th Fleet
08:45In a matter of hours
08:47The southern force is sunk
08:49Thousands of lives lost
08:50And the salt water stained
08:52With blood and oil
08:53In the wake of the battle
08:54Of Leyte Gulf
08:55The Japanese navy is shattered
08:58The cost of the conflict
09:00Is an estimated 15,000 dead
09:03In just a few days
09:05Making it the deadliest naval battle
09:08In history
09:09Leyte is the last time
09:11That we know
09:12That battleships
09:13Shoot at battleships
09:14It is the end of an era
09:16The beginning of a new one
09:22It's the summer of 1942
09:24And the Nazis are racing
09:26Towards Stalingrad
09:28Hitler is determined
09:30To capture the city
09:32His obsession will cost
09:34Over one million lives
09:40It's July 1942
09:42The German blitzkrieg
09:43Rumbles and roars
09:44Towards Stalingrad
09:45They seem unstoppable
09:47It's got 600,000 Axis troops
09:511,000 tanks
09:53And 1,600 aircraft
09:55Hitler expects Russia
09:57To fall in a matter of weeks
09:58Hitler is convinced
10:00That conquering Stalingrad
10:02Will break the Soviet spirit
10:04Stalin agrees
10:05Which is why he's ready
10:07To do whatever it takes
10:09To hold it
10:09Stalin issues
10:10Special Order 227
10:12On July 28, 1942
10:14And that order states
10:15That no one shall
10:16Take a step backward
10:18Soviet soldiers are told
10:20That they even retreat
10:21A single step
10:22They will be executed on sight
10:23Not bluffing
10:24And this order applies
10:26Not just to the Soviet military
10:28But civilians
10:29The civilian population
10:31Particularly
10:31Of the city of Stalingrad
10:35The German Luftwaffe
10:36Begin their bombardment
10:38Of the city
10:38On August 23rd
10:40Dropping 1,000 tons
10:42Of bombs
10:43On Stalingrad
10:44In a single day
10:45This is
10:47A literal hellscape
10:49The fighting spills
10:50All over the city
10:51They are fighting
10:52Down inside the sewers
10:53And the streets
10:54Everywhere you can imagine
10:55Even the people
10:56People of Stalingrad
10:57Are mobilized
10:58Toward the defense
10:59Of the city
10:59They help in placing
11:01Obstacles around
11:02The city streets
11:03They are involved
11:04In raising anti-tank guns
11:07To the roofs of buildings
11:08The life expectancy
11:10Of a German soldier
11:11In Stalingrad
11:12Is a mere three days
11:13Correspondingly
11:15The life expectancy
11:16Of a Soviet soldier
11:17Is but 24 hours
11:19By November
11:21The Germans
11:22Controlled 90%
11:23Of the city
11:24And seemed like
11:25They're one big push
11:26Away from victory
11:27Then
11:29The Soviets
11:30Identify a weakness
11:32In the enemy's army
11:33The flanks
11:34Of the German offensive
11:36In Stalingrad
11:37Are not held
11:37By German soldiers
11:38They're held
11:39By auxiliaries
11:40Coming from places
11:41Like Italy
11:42And Hungary
11:42And elsewhere
11:43And the Soviets
11:44Correctly identify
11:45Their flanks
11:46As being a weak position
11:47That they can attack
11:48Within days
11:50The German 6th Army
11:51With over 200,000 men
11:54Is completely surrounded
11:56The invaders
11:57Are now trapped
11:59Hitler is not pleased
12:00To learn this information
12:02And issues an order
12:03That says
12:04The 6th Army
12:05Will hold their position
12:06To the last man
12:07In the last round
12:08Only weeks later
12:09In late November
12:11The Soviets
12:12Welcomed their deadliest weapon
12:13A long time ally
12:15They call
12:16Zima
12:17A.K.A.
12:18Winter
12:20Temperatures drop
12:21To minus 49 degrees
12:23The German advance
12:25Falters
12:26And freezes
12:27In its tracks
12:28Machines and men
12:29Break and shatter
12:30On the ground
12:31They eat all their horses
12:33They eat rats
12:34And there are rumors
12:35Of cannibalism
12:36Commander of the German
12:386th Army
12:39Friedrich Paulus
12:40Pleads with Berlin
12:41To let him surrender
12:43But Hitler
12:44Has another idea
12:45To stall
12:46An inevitable
12:47Soviet victory
12:48Adolf Hitler
12:49Promotes Paulus
12:50To field marshal
12:51With the full knowledge
12:52That no German
12:53Field marshal
12:54Has ever surrendered
12:55In combat
12:56Adolf Hitler
12:57Reminds Paulus
12:58Of that fact
12:59Paulus is then ordered
13:00You fight
13:01To the last cartridge
13:03General Paulus defies
13:05Hitler's orders
13:05And surrenders
13:06The 90,000
13:08Nazi soldiers
13:09Who surrender
13:10Are sent to the gulag
13:11And of those
13:12Only 6,000
13:14Are ever returned
13:14To Germany
13:15In the end
13:16850,000 Axis forces
13:18Are casualties
13:19Of Stalingrad
13:20The Soviets
13:21Lose over a million
13:22This is a meat grinder
13:24In any conversation
13:27About history's
13:28Deadliest battles
13:28Stalingrad stands alone
13:30The carnage
13:34Hundreds and thousands
13:35Of acres
13:36Of burning bodies
13:37And tanks
13:38Corpses
13:39Scattered across
13:40Endless fields
13:41Nothing compares to it
13:44It is the truest
13:46Definition of horror
13:52500 years before
13:54The Battle of Stalingrad
13:55Another kind of horror
13:57Is unleashed
13:58An entire empire
14:00Is laid to waste
14:01By an almost
14:02Invisible weapon
14:04Its use isn't deliberate
14:06But its impact
14:07Is undeniable
14:10In 1520
14:11Spanish explorer
14:13Hernán Cortés
14:14Is occupying the Aztec capital
14:16Of Tenochtitlan
14:17Present day
14:18Mexico City
14:18He and his conquistadors
14:20Have taken it
14:21In a bloodless coup
14:22Cortés
14:23And Moctezuma
14:24The king
14:25Become friends
14:26But at the same time
14:27Cortés is saying
14:28I'm looking for gold
14:29And Moctezuma
14:31Is sending out
14:32His people
14:33To collect this gold
14:34And to give it to him
14:35Many Aztecs
14:37Resent the Spanish invaders
14:39And when brutal
14:40Fighting breaks out
14:41600 of Cortés' men
14:44Are killed
14:45Trying to flee
14:46He's left
14:47With just half
14:48His army
14:48He's been chased
14:50Out of the city
14:51But Hernán Cortés
14:52Cannot surrender
14:53He has to bring back
14:54The gold
14:55From Tenochtitlan
14:57Cortés is vastly outnumbered
15:00But he sees
15:01That other nearby tribes
15:03Are tired
15:03Of Moctezuma
15:05And his brutal regime
15:06So he recruits
15:08200,000 of them
15:09To fight alongside him
15:11Cortés takes
15:12His Spanish troops
15:13And his massive
15:15Indigenous army
15:16And parks it
15:17Right on the shores
15:18Of Lake Tuscoco
15:20On May 22nd
15:221521
15:24Cortés launches
15:26His siege
15:27Of Tenochtitlan
15:28The Spanish
15:29And the Aztecs
15:30Clog up the causeways
15:31In brutal
15:32Hand-to-hand combat
15:34Fighting is non-stop
15:3624 hours a day
15:38The Aztecs
15:40Are skilled
15:41And brutal warriors
15:42But Spanish steel
15:44And gunpowder
15:45Prove more formidable
15:46The new Aztec leader
15:48The king
15:48Cuauhtémoc
15:49Decides that
15:50His only chance here
15:51Is to make
15:52A frontal assault
15:53To try to finally
15:54Wipe out the camps
15:54Of the Spanish
15:55That are besieging
15:56The capital
15:57It's a calculated risk
15:59Leaving Tenochtitlan
16:01Exposed
16:02And the Spanish forces
16:03Are able to breach
16:04The city's walls
16:06This is inside
16:07A city
16:07With twisting streets
16:09The Aztecs
16:09Know the streets
16:10The Spaniards
16:11Do not
16:11The Aztecs
16:13Capture several
16:14Conquistadors
16:14Who are taken
16:15To the top
16:16Of the Great Pyramid
16:17They are in full view
16:18Of their comrades
16:18Below
16:19Their beating hearts
16:20Are ripped
16:21From their chests
16:52The fighting inside
16:52Combination of combat
16:53Disease and starvation
16:55After 93 days
16:57The Aztecs
16:59Are done fighting
17:00When Tenochtitlan falls
17:02It is the fall
17:03Of the Aztec empire
17:04In a matter of
17:05Just a few weeks
17:07The Spanish
17:08Gravely outnumbered
17:09Have completely
17:10Changed the direction
17:12Of the continent
17:13And the people on it
17:20It is August of 1950
17:23And the Korean peninsula
17:25Is under siege
17:26One bloody fight
17:28Becomes the most infamous
17:30Battle of the Korean war
17:35At the end of the
17:36Second World War
17:37On the Korean peninsula
17:38They simply divided
17:40At the 38th parallel
17:41The north
17:42Supported by the Russians
17:43And the Chinese
17:44The south
17:45Is supported by
17:45The United States
17:46And the United Nations
17:47By 1950
17:49It is no longer
17:50Saber rattling
17:51Or a shouting match
17:52It is a shooting war
17:55The North Korean
17:56People's Army
17:57Attacks with the goal
17:58Of taking the entire
17:59Korean peninsula
18:01They have T-34
18:02Tanks
18:03Which are
18:03Some of the best
18:04Tanks at the time
18:05In a matter of weeks
18:07The North Korean army
18:08Absolutely steamroll
18:10Their way down
18:11The Korean peninsula
18:13The United Nations
18:14Is driven back
18:14To a very small
18:15Perimeter
18:16Around the port
18:17City of Pusan
18:18And they know
18:19They have to defend
18:20That because
18:20If they lose that
18:21They've lost Korea
18:24August 4th
18:251950
18:26The North Koreans
18:27Make a vicious push
18:29To crack the line
18:33The North Korean army
18:35Fields a hundred
18:36Thousand troops
18:37They attack
18:38The South Korean
18:39Positions on
18:40Multiple fronts
18:41At Masan
18:42In the west
18:42Hong in the east
18:44And Daegu
18:45Near the Naktong River
18:46An endless barrage
18:48Of shelling
18:49That reduces
18:50Entire cities
18:52And towns
18:52To rubble
18:55The fierce combat
18:56Soon descends
18:57Into one of the
18:58Worst atrocities
18:59Of the war
19:00It is the
19:02Bloody Gulch Massacre
19:0375 U.S. troops
19:05Are captured
19:05They surrender
19:06More than 50 of them
19:08Are crammed
19:09Into a small house
19:10And then
19:11Machine gunned
19:12To death
19:12The rest
19:14Are just
19:15Lined up
19:16Along front of the road
19:17Shot in the head
19:17And rolled into a ditch
19:20The fighting escalates
19:22And U.N. troops
19:24And equipment
19:24Start to pour
19:25Into Pusan
19:27The North Koreans
19:28Decide to go
19:30All in
19:33On September 1st
19:34The North Koreans
19:35Launch a massive attack
19:36To push through
19:37The Pusan perimeter
19:38The fighting is brutal
19:40At every level
19:42Grenades
19:43Bayonets
19:44Assault rifles
19:45And tanks
19:46Blowing each other
19:47To smithereens
19:50The U.N. forces
19:52Holding the port
19:53Of Pusan
19:53Have stood resolute
19:55And it's starting
19:57To pay off
20:00On September 15th
20:02General Douglas MacArthur
20:04Launches a daring
20:05Amphibious assault
20:07At Incheon
20:08Far behind
20:08The enemy lines
20:10This amphibious assault
20:12Is massive
20:12It's got 75,000 troops
20:14And 261 ships
20:16The intention here
20:17Is to once and for all
20:19Cut off the North Korean
20:20Supply chain
20:21Their supply lines
20:22Are cut
20:23They fall into
20:24Headlong retreat
20:25And this massive
20:26100,000 person force
20:27That nearly took
20:28The peninsula
20:29Ends up being
20:30Nearly annihilated
20:35The Korean forces
20:36Are destroyed
20:37Of the original
20:38100,000 troops
20:40Only 25,000
20:42Make it home alive
20:42The Allies
20:44Suffer serious casualties
20:46As well
20:4612,000 dead
20:50Seventeen years
20:51After Pusan
20:53U.S. forces
20:54Face another
20:56Communist enemy
20:57This time
20:58In South Vietnam
21:02The Vietnam conflict
21:04Is another of these
21:05Cold War
21:06Proxy war conflicts
21:07The North Vietnamese
21:08Are supported by
21:09The Chinese
21:09And the Soviets
21:10The South Vietnamese
21:12Are supported by
21:13The United States
21:13The North Vietnamese
21:15Are attacking
21:15And they supply
21:16Themselves
21:17Through a jungle trail
21:18That's called
21:18The Ho Chi Minh Trail
21:20America believes
21:21That if they can
21:21Cut off the Ho Chi Minh Trail
21:23They can cut off
21:23The North Vietnamese
21:24Attacks
21:25And so they build
21:26A base
21:26Called Khe Sanh
21:28The NVA
21:28Are happy with that
21:29So what do they do
21:30They send
21:3130,000 NVA soldiers
21:34And lay siege
21:36To Khe Sanh
21:38The base of
21:406,000 Marines
21:41Is slammed
21:42Non-stop
21:43With rocket
21:44Mortar
21:44And artillery fire
21:48There's a point
21:49During the siege
21:50Where an ammunition
21:51Dump is set off
21:55It kills
21:5614 Marines
21:57And wounds
21:5843 others
22:00Khe Sanh
22:01Has been surrounded
22:04The North Vietnamese
22:05Are successful
22:06In cutting off
22:07Ground-based supply lines
22:08So the Marine Corps
22:09Takes to the air
22:10And they start
22:11Running supplies
22:12To and from Khe Sanh
22:13Using air transportation
22:14But the U.S.
22:16Planes
22:16Do more
22:17Than drop supplies
22:20They drop bombs
22:21Lots of them
22:23It's called
22:24Operation Niagara 2
22:26Just like the water
22:28Pours over Niagara Falls
22:30The bombs
22:31Just rain
22:32From the sky
22:33350 fighter bombers
22:35Are making
22:35Frequent sorties
22:3760 B-52
22:39Super fortresses
22:40Are hammering
22:41The NVA
22:42Wherever they can find them
22:45As the Americans
22:46Pour on
22:47The pressure
22:47From above
22:48The North Vietnamese
22:50Have a plan
22:51For a ground attack
22:52On January 30th
22:541968
22:54About a week
22:56Into the siege
22:56On Khe Sanh
22:57The North Vietnamese
22:58Launched the Tet Offensive
22:59This surprise attack
23:00Opens up a whole new
23:02Front on the battlefield
23:03Taking the North Vietnamese
23:04Fight directly
23:05Into southern Vietnam
23:07Everything suggests
23:08The battle for Khe Sanh
23:10Is really just
23:11A distraction
23:11But General Westmoreland
23:13The overall commander
23:14Of all U.S. forces
23:15In Vietnam
23:16Doesn't think so
23:17In fact
23:18Even as the Tet Offensive
23:19Expands
23:20He throws everything
23:22He has
23:22Into saving that position
23:27Hundreds of marines
23:28Are dying at Khe Sanh
23:30And the American media
23:31Is putting the carnage
23:33On the evening news
23:34For President Lyndon Johnson
23:37He starts to understand
23:38That what's happening
23:38At Khe Sanh
23:39Is a PR nightmare
23:41In late March of 1968
23:44President Johnson
23:46Orders Khe Sanh
23:48Held at all costs
23:50Americans commit
23:5230,000 troops
23:53And South Vietnamese soldiers
23:55To relieve the siege
23:56Of Khe Sanh
23:57The huge surge
23:59Of manpower
24:00Succeeds
24:01And the siege
24:01Is broken
24:03Then
24:04Weeks after the siege
24:06Ends
24:07Khe Sanh
24:08Is abandoned
24:09So Khe Sanh
24:11Where all these marines die
24:12And all these
24:13North Vietnamese die
24:14And a month later
24:15We leave
24:16It becomes
24:18A desperate
24:19Deadly reminder
24:20Of the futility
24:21Of this war
24:22The casualties
24:24On the North Vietnamese side
24:25Are astounding
24:26They lose something
24:28Between 5,000 and 15,000 troops
24:30During the 4-month siege
24:31On Khe Sanh
24:33Combat Base
24:33The actual number
24:35Of U.S. troops
24:35Lost in defense
24:36Of Khe Sanh
24:37Exceeds 1,000 people
24:39Which makes the siege
24:40On Khe Sanh
24:41Combat Base
24:42One of the deadliest
24:43Conflicts
24:43In the Vietnam War
24:50December 1944
24:51Allied troops
24:52Push towards Berlin
24:54Adolf Hitler
24:55Unleashes a last ditch
24:57Offensive
24:58What follows is
24:59The single
25:00Deadliest
25:01American battle
25:02Of World War II
25:07Allied forces
25:09Are charging
25:09Headlong
25:10Into Europe
25:11After their
25:11Successful landings
25:12In Normandy
25:13They've liberated
25:14Almost all of France
25:15Belgium
25:16And Luxembourg
25:17But their lines
25:18Are stretched thin
25:19And so they set up
25:20A defensive perimeter
25:21In the Ardennes forest
25:22To resupply
25:23And catch their breath
25:26But on December 15, 1944
25:29The serenity
25:30Of the Belgian forest
25:32Is suddenly shattered
25:33The Allied troops
25:35Hear a rumble
25:37In the distance
25:37And don't really
25:39Compute or understand
25:40What it is at first
25:41This is a force
25:42Of 400,000
25:43German attackers
25:44Supported by
25:451,000 panzer tanks
25:47Supported by 2,500
25:49Pieces of artillery
25:53The enemy objective
25:54Is to recapture Antwerp
25:56They push all the way in
25:58Creating a battlefield
25:59That's 1,500 square miles
26:02The German breakout
26:03If seen from the air
26:05Or imagined on a map
26:05It bulges out
26:07Into this enormous area
26:08Roughly 50 by 75 miles
26:10And that's how
26:11The Battle of the Bulge
26:12Gets its name
26:15During the first three days
26:17Of the Battle of the Bulge
26:18It's estimated
26:19That there are
26:19Somewhere between
26:208,000 and 10,000 soldiers
26:22That are killed
26:23Wounded or captured
26:24The fiercest fighting
26:26Takes place
26:27In and around
26:28The town of Bastogne
26:29Where all seven
26:31Of the area's main roads
26:32Come together
26:33If you want to get to Antwerp
26:36You have to take
26:37The town of Bastogne
26:38And that means
26:39The Allies
26:40Cannot afford
26:41To lose Bastogne
26:44Eisenhower sends in
26:45The 101st Airborne
26:47To hold the town
26:48They are lightly equipped
26:49They don't have
26:50A ton of ammunition
26:51They don't even have
26:52Cold weather clothing
26:53And it is cold
26:54Minus 20 degrees Fahrenheit
27:00By December 20th
27:02This group of
27:0311,000 American soldiers
27:05In Bastogne
27:06Get completely encircled
27:07By the Germans
27:08The 101st
27:10Holds Bastogne
27:11For six days
27:12Many men
27:13Are down to the last
27:14Two or three rounds
27:16Of ammo
27:17But Christmas
27:18Finally comes
27:19When General
27:20George Patton
27:21And the powerful
27:22Third Army
27:23Break the siege
27:24On December 26th
27:261944
27:27This was Hitler's
27:29Last roll of the dice
27:30And those dice
27:31Just got crushed
27:32Under the boots
27:32Of General Patton
27:34By the latter stages
27:36Of this month
27:36Of January 1945
27:38U.S. forces
27:39Have driven the enemy
27:40Back to Germany
27:42The Americans
27:43Suffer 85,000 casualties
27:46And the Germans
27:47Even more
27:48Stories from
27:50The Battle of the Bulge
27:51Become the stuff of legend
27:52As they're told
27:52And retold
27:53And movies
27:54And television shows
27:55Most famously
27:56Band of Brothers
27:57And the reason
27:58They're told
27:59And retold
27:59Is because
28:00This is true heroism
28:03The Battle of the Bulge
28:05Is the last major
28:07German offensive
28:08Of World War II
28:10Eighty years earlier
28:12There's another
28:13All or nothing conflict
28:15This time
28:16In the United States
28:18Two armies
28:19Are waging
28:20The deadliest battle
28:21Of a fort
28:22On American soil
28:27In May of 1863
28:29Confederate General
28:30Robert E. Lee
28:30Has just delivered
28:32A crushing defeat
28:33To Union forces
28:34Near Chancellorville
28:35Virginia
28:36It's the biggest
28:37Rebel victory
28:38Of the Civil War
28:39So Robert E. Lee
28:41Puts all his chips
28:42On invasion to the north
28:44The goal is to take
28:46Harrisburg, Pennsylvania
28:47Which is a major
28:48Northern supply hub
28:50On June 28, 1863
28:53Lee gets news
28:55That the Union's
28:57Army of the Potomac
28:58Is much closer
28:59To rebel positions
29:00Than he thought
29:03Lee decides to give up
29:04His plans for
29:05Harrisburg, Pennsylvania
29:07Instead
29:07He has his forces
29:08Regrouped at
29:09Cashtown
29:10Just eight miles
29:11From a little place
29:11Called Gettysburg
29:13On June 30th
29:14One of the Confederate
29:15Brigades at Cashtown
29:16Is sent to scout
29:17Gettysburg
29:18And also to look
29:19For desperately needed
29:20Supplies
29:20They're hoping to find
29:22A shoe factory
29:23Or a bootmaker
29:24So they can re-shoe
29:25Their armed forces
29:28There's no boot factory
29:29In sight
29:30But the scouts
29:31Do spot
29:32A group of
29:32Union cavalry
29:34Approaching
29:34From the south
29:35Confederate commanders
29:37Become convinced
29:38Oh it can't be
29:39The Union army
29:40It must be
29:40Just some local militia
29:42We shouldn't just
29:43Stop for some
29:43Local militia
29:46Sun comes up
29:47On July 1st
29:481863
29:49Two brigades
29:50Of rebel soldiers
29:51Are making their way
29:53Into Gettysburg
29:54To beat the heck
29:55Out of some
29:55Ragtag
29:56Pennsylvania militia
29:59Rebels are met
30:00By a Union cavalry
30:01Under the command
30:02Of John Buford
30:03A Union soldier
30:05Fires at an enemy
30:07Officer on horseback
30:08He misses
30:10But his shot
30:11Rings out
30:12Across the valley
30:15It's difficult
30:17To convey
30:17How quickly
30:18The conflict
30:19Escalates
30:19On day one
30:21We have
30:2250,000 soldiers
30:24Converge
30:25In Gettysburg
30:28The fighting
30:29Is brutal
30:30And by the start
30:31Of the second day
30:32The south
30:32Has taken control
30:33Of Gettysburg
30:34But Union reinforcements
30:36Control the high ground
30:37From Culp's Hill
30:38To Cemetery Ridge
30:39Within 24 hours
30:41There are
30:4270,000
30:43Confederate troops
30:44And almost
30:45100,000
30:46Union troops
30:47Lee thinks
30:48The south
30:48Is on the brink
30:49Of victory
30:50He thinks
30:51That if he has
30:51A massive attack
30:52On the center
30:53That he can get
30:54The federal troops
30:55To break
30:55And that this
30:56Will be
30:56To him
30:57The end
30:58Of the war
30:58You know
30:59Who likes
30:59This plan
31:00No one
31:03All his generals
31:05Say
31:05Don't do this
31:06We cannot
31:07Pull this off
31:08Lee decides
31:09He's going to
31:10Send all but
31:11500 of them
31:12Across the open
31:13Battlefield
31:13To attack
31:14The Union troops
31:17The Union is
31:18Really dug in
31:20They've been
31:21Holding their
31:22Artillery and
31:22Reserve
31:22And they just
31:24Bombard the
31:25Advancing Confederate
31:26Soldiers over
31:27And over again
31:29The charging
31:30Southerners are
31:31Caught in a
31:32Pocket of death
31:33Bullets and bombs
31:35Coming in from
31:36All sides
31:37His men's
31:38Casuality rate
31:39Is 50%
31:40Lee's
31:41Disastrous
31:42Strategy
31:43Goes down in
31:44History as
31:44Pickett's
31:45Charge
31:45Named after
31:47One of Lee's
31:47Subordinates
31:48Who opposes
31:49The tactic
31:50The crushing
31:52Defeat
31:52Hobbles Lee's
31:53Army
31:54Permanently
31:55The Civil War
31:56Has battles
31:57With horrific
31:58Death tolls
31:59But Gettysburg
32:00Dwarfs them all
32:018,000
32:02Fatalities
32:03And a staggering
32:0443,000
32:06Wounded or
32:06Missing
32:07The battle
32:08Proves to be
32:09A major
32:10Turning point
32:10In the Civil War
32:11And the chances
32:13Of victory
32:14Shift decisively
32:15In favor
32:16Of the Union
32:21July 1916
32:23British and
32:24French soldiers
32:25Are bogged
32:26Down in
32:27Trenches
32:27Fighting the
32:28Germans
32:29In Belgium
32:30And France
32:30To break
32:31Through
32:32Britain launches
32:33One of the
32:33Bloodiest battles
32:34In history
32:39The Allies
32:40Are going to
32:41Take on the
32:41Germans
32:41Near the
32:42Somme River
32:4360 miles
32:43North of
32:44Paris
32:45The reason
32:45That the
32:46Battle of
32:46The Somme
32:46Occurs
32:47Where it
32:47Does
32:47Is because
32:48It is
32:49Thought that
32:49This will
32:50Be the
32:50Perfect place
32:50To apply
32:51Pressure
32:52To the
32:52Enemy
32:53While
32:53They're
32:53Trying to
32:54Fight
32:54A vicious
32:54Battle to
32:55The south
32:55At Verdun
32:56That's where
32:57The Allied
32:58Forces
32:58Are being
32:58Bled dry
32:59By these
32:59Relentless
