A historically accurate rendition of the original sandwich arrived in a pub in the Kent town of Sandwich with hundreds flocking to get a taste.

Chloe Brewster reports.

00:00We have plenty of oddly named places in Kent.
00:03Noah's Ark, Fong Lane and Tickle Belly Alley to name a few.
00:07But one of the most loved is without a doubt Sandwich in the South East.
00:11And while I can imagine locals may be a tad fed up of the sarni-themed jokes levelled in their
00:16direction,
00:17today's event gathered lovers far and wide to the Crispin Inn in the town.
00:23Yes, the Crispin Inn.
00:25They were there to taste an authentic sandwich sandwich.
00:30The first ever sandwich was said to have been crafted in 1762 by John Montagu, the 4th Earl of Sandwich.
00:37It was said to have been because he wanted to be able to eat without having to use cutlery or
00:41taking a break from his gambling, allegedly.
00:43This way he could eat as he played, using the bread as kind of a two-part edible plate.
00:48But what does that sandwich actually look like?
00:51So there's bread, of course.
00:55There's prime steak, beef steak, which is excellent.
00:59There's Christmas pudding.
01:01Christmas pudding in a sandwich.
01:03But what do Papa Revelers think of it?
01:05It's really good.
01:06I'm a bit sceptical at first, but it actually really works together.
01:10Unbelievable.
01:11It's very, very generous.
01:13Christmas is going to look a whole lot different now when I get my Christmas pudding.
01:17So I've just been served up the sandwich.
01:19I've taken my first few bites, so I feel like I can give a decent review so far.
01:24So it's a bit strange, right?
01:26So you've got your bread, you've got your beef, you've got your pickle.
01:28Very, very typical.
01:29But then there's like a Christmas pudding in it.
01:31It might have changed my favourite.
01:33Although the campaign is a marketing stunt, Mayor Emmett says it's done a world of good
01:37for the town, with even the local councillors getting involved.
01:40Before there were BLTs, before there were coronation chickens, there was the first sandwich.
01:47When it was announced to me, I just thought it was a great opportunity to sell sandwich
01:53to the wider community and hopefully instill some more tourism into the town.
01:58It hasn't cost us anything.
02:00I think it's all been run by a national company.
02:05We would have been silly not to buy into it.
02:08And, you know, we know how this works with social media.
02:11There's a ripple effect.
02:12People will share.
02:13People will talk about it.
02:14And then people will actually think, let's go and visit.
02:17Let's have a toast to sandwich.
