00:00Dios, ¿por qué estoy haciendo esto?
00:02Ok, bien, bien, bien, bien, sorry.
00:04They just, they say they did it.
00:10It is a pleasure to be here,
00:14joining us at our city's third ever rental ripoff hearing.
00:26I'm excited that we have a mayor
00:28who is thinking about tenants first
00:30and we can come and speak directly to the agencies,
00:33the leadership and raise what our issues are.
00:44Being a renter in New York City
00:45is sometimes a tremendously Byzantine process.
00:49You don't know what agency you're supposed to call,
00:51if something is going wrong in your apartment.
00:53You don't necessarily know who your landlord is
00:55or who you're supposed to call first to get repairs
00:57and maybe you feel isolated from your neighbors.
01:00All three of those things are things
01:01that we hope to be able to tackle.
01:03Ciao, Goli. Gracias. Thank you.
01:06We've been trying to get them to come.
01:09See, they're doing it now. You see this?
01:12This is by the room.
01:17I believe that they caught wind up the rental ripoff
01:21and the effects of that event.
01:27And they know that,
01:28I'm sure they saw me on the news
01:31speaking about this building
01:33because they did a little article in the New York Times.
01:36And so I think he just was being preemptive
01:39and decided he needed to actually move a little faster
01:45because just recently, within the past couple of days,
01:49this gentleman has been doing the stairs
01:50and now they are working on the scaffold,
01:53which the scaffold has been up for four years.
02:00City Hall and the state have to first fix
02:03the fundamental economics of operating this housing
02:06and then utilize the tools that city and state have,
02:08which is enforcement power,
02:09which is inspectors from HPD,
02:11all the power the city government has
02:13to weed out bad operators.
02:14But it's incredibly difficult
02:16to navigate that right now
02:17when you're bunched in with people
02:19who are just struggling financially
02:20to run their buildings
02:21and are not inherently bad operators.
