🏹 Interesting Fact: Brave (2012) — Pixar’s animation department had to completely rewrite their existing physics simulation software to accurately animate Merida’s iconic curly red hair. The technical directors spent over three years developing a new internal program called “Taz” specifically to handle the complex movements of her hair, which consisted of more than 1,500 individually sculpted and physically simulated hair curves that reacted naturally to gravity and the character’s dynamic physical movements. Director Brenda Chapman originally conceived the story and based the character of Merida heavily on her relationship with her own strong-willed teenage daughter. Chapman was the first woman to direct a feature-length animated film for Pixar, though creative disagreements with the studio executives eventually led to her being replaced by Mark Andrews midway through the production schedule. Despite this major leadership shift, Chapman remained credited as a co-director and ultimately won an Academy Award for her foundational work on the project.
