00:00Good morning.
00:02This is another day of making our favorite small town better.
00:05Erin, we got to go, babe.
00:06Go fix some old sad houses.
00:08Ben, let's go.
00:09Growing up, I didn't see what was so special about Laurel.
00:12So every day we make sure our girls see it.
00:14Good morning, Katie.
00:15Hey.
00:16Can you believe we fixed up over 100 houses in Laurel?
00:18There's so much opportunity.
00:20So many unloved houses.
00:22I don't know what is going to go wrong in here today.
00:25I'm sure something.
00:27Girl, the bat just flew through here.
00:29That's not good.
00:31Oh, what?
00:32We're about to see the house for the first time.
00:34This is the best part.
00:35Oh, my God.
00:37Holy cow.
00:38Are you serious right now?
00:40Ben, did you make this?
00:41Yeah, I made this.
00:43The real truth of living and working in your hometown is that you're going to see these people everywhere forever.
00:48It's your superpower, Erin.
00:50Color is her superpower.
00:51It is.
00:52It is perfect.
00:53Every day is different when you're renovating houses in Laurel, Mississippi.
01:05Show them how you draw a rainbow.
01:07Mommy drew a rainbow.
01:08Mine's got green and orange.
01:11Rachel and Mo have been in medical school and residency a long time.
01:16A long time.
01:17So I grew up in Houston, Texas, and she grew up in Mississippi, and we both went to medical school
01:22in Hattiesburg.
01:23Go get it, bubba.
01:24He got it.
01:25He got it.
01:26Mo is a general surgeon in Waynesboro.
01:28He's got a job here.
01:29And she is a neonatologist.
01:31She'll work with premature babies.
01:34I just completed a for a neonatology fellowship, and I am trying to get a job, trying to find something
01:38locally where I can practice in my field.
01:41On the pizza, sprinkle the flour on top.
01:43This is going to be their first permanent home together as a family.
01:47Through medical school, we had to travel to different places all across the country.
01:50We spent a long time away from each other.
01:52So we've been basically a separate or long-distance relationship for almost nine years, and we've really only lived together
01:59for a short amount of time.
02:00We only lived together for two years out of 13 years.
02:02It's always so exciting for any small town in America, a young family.
02:06They work in the medical field.
02:08I mean, what an asset for a community.
02:11Yeah.
02:11What are we doing now?
02:12Oh!
02:13We've been in rental properties and back and forth apartments, hotels.
02:17Chouches.
02:18Living out of boxes, living out of suitcases, moving a long road.
02:21A long road.
02:22Finally being able to be right next to each other, waking up in bed next to each other, having your
02:26kids around is going to be great.
02:27Fine.
02:28I'm finally.
02:28Yeah.
02:29And the moving.
02:29I'm tired of moving.
02:34Your budget's around $700,000, which is great.
02:37Huge, healthy budget in Jones County.
02:39Glad you're coming back to Jones County.
02:40Yeah, me too.
02:41I'm excited to be back.
02:43Family's close by.
02:44Rachel grew up in Moselle, and that's where her mom lives.
02:47That's a 25-minute drive from Laurel.
02:49Mo works in Waynesboro, which is about a 30-minute drive from Laurel, in the opposite direction.
02:55And it's also where they're renting right now.
02:57The middle ground is what we're looking for, and Laurel kind of fits that middle ground.
03:01But if there's something that fits our budget somewhere else that's closer to either side, maybe that's what we're going
03:05to choose.
03:06So we want to look at houses here, and then there's something in Waynesboro, too.
03:10Welcome to the Fagin house.
03:11I have always loved this house.
03:13The property is so pretty.
03:15Anita and J.W. Fagin, they own Laurel Grocery and Wholesale.
03:20This house is a 3-3-3-3.
03:22Three bedrooms, three baths, three acres, 3,000 square feet.
03:27And it's listed for $500,000.
03:29And one pool.
03:31Wow.
03:32Not three pools?
03:33Not three.
03:33Not three.
03:34I'm sorry.
03:34I'm sorry, okay.
03:35I'm excited about it.
03:36I don't know about the red brick, though.
03:39You don't like the red brick?
03:41I like it.
03:42I think it gives an old-school style.
03:44I like the ranch style, the mid-century modern look of it.
03:47It's been really well cared for.
03:49It looks like it has a strong foundation, like built-wind houses were really supposed to be built.
03:54Just looking at this house, I would save my money to update the inside.
03:58And I would just, on the exterior...
04:01Look how different that is.
04:02Oh, wow.
04:04It's a new front door.
04:06That is the difference.
04:07I love the wood door.
04:08It'll bring some work to it.
04:09The mid-century modern feel to it.
04:11Figure out how to make the gutters less visible.
04:13Okay.
04:14And then a little landscaping update would be nice.
04:17On the exterior, $10,000.
04:19That's an expensive door.
04:20Well, it's an expensive door and then landscape hanging in.
04:23That's like a max budget of what we think it would take.
04:25It'd be a custom front door.
04:27Come see the inside.
04:27See what you think about this.
04:28It is quite mid-century.
04:30I'm excited.
04:32All right.
04:33I want to hear some feelings and thoughts on this floor.
04:36I like the stone floor.
04:38It looks like I'm outside inside.
04:40I think it gives it its own unique personality.
04:43I think it's a vibe, man.
04:44And it's a vibe.
04:45Like in a good way.
04:46It's a good vibe.
04:48Rachel, you don't like this?
04:50I mean, it's an interesting look.
04:52It is flagstone-like.
04:54I think seeing wrought iron inside might be suggesting to your brain this all feels outdoor.
05:00I've seen lots of wood in your inspiration images.
05:02What if we could build like a slatted wall that feels very modern, mid-century, but introduces a little warmth?
05:08Okay.
05:09And it would go with the flagstone.
05:10And then you keep the flagstone.
05:12Yeah.
05:13Definitely.
05:13And then Moe's happy and Rachel's happy.
05:15Maybe.
05:16Yeah.
05:17Maybe.
05:18And then in here, carpet.
05:20It's a formal living room.
05:21That's where you see carpet.
05:23It's in pretty good shape.
05:24I'm a carpet cleaner's daughter and I cannot see carpet.
05:27I've seen things and I know things.
05:30So if you took out all the carpet, you brought a new LVT flooring.
05:34And then I think the symmetry here is weird on the fireplace.
05:37Which we had talked about fixing with bookcases.
05:39Yeah, we talked about adding bookcase left and right.
05:42Okay.
05:42Same thing for the dining room, right?
05:44Yeah.
05:44The flooring would continue, update the light fixture.
05:47So flooring, paint, light fixtures, built-ins, $30,000.
05:51Okay.
05:52The flooring throughout the whole house.
05:54And the entry.
05:55The slatted wall in there.
05:57The kitchen is something, y'all.
05:59Yeah.
05:59I'm very excited to talk about it.
06:01It's a nice dining room.
06:03But I want to talk about this kitchen because I love it.
06:07Wow.
06:07Yeah.
06:08Drink it in, y'all.
06:09I mean, it's big, but it's covered in pairs.
06:12Yeah.
06:13Uh-huh.
06:13How do you feel about wallpaper?
06:15I mean, in a bathroom, smaller moment.
06:18The stainless steel feels very luxury for when the house was built.
06:22It's also custom.
06:23I love parts of this, but, like, it needs some modernizing.
06:27Gutting a 50s kitchen and reworking it.
06:30They fight back.
06:31They don't want to be taken out.
06:32Everything looks really sturdy in here.
06:33Uh-huh.
06:34I like the big counter space.
06:35And there's so many cabinets they can put all kinds of stuff in.
06:37Yeah.
06:38I mean, minus the laundry in the kitchen.
06:40That's a little strange.
06:42Laundry in the kitchen, you could say it doesn't pair together?
06:45Mmm.
06:46Gosh.
06:47Mmm.
06:47Doesn't pair well, man.
06:48You've mentioned you like to have, like, a half bath near the center of the house.
06:53That could be a space where you could build a half bath.
06:55I mean, we have family gatherings.
06:56That'd be great.
06:57Well, what if this was the sink centered on this wall with a long run of cabinetry?
07:02I've seen in your design survey you had a lot of Scandinavian-inspired designs.
07:07A little bit minimalist, very clean, and it gives us an opportunity to introduce some natural wood tones.
07:13Instead of a peninsula, we build a seven-foot island here in the middle of the kitchen.
07:18And we could then keep a wall oven on that side, but I would want to build in the refrigerator
07:22on that wall.
07:23Just update lighting, color, finishes everywhere.
07:27And then a stovetop here on this wall beside the dining room door.
07:31Take the laundry out of the kitchen.
07:34You move it to this mudroom that's behind you.
07:37So then you would have space to build a half bath in this kitchen that's kind of at the center
07:42of the house, which I know is important to you.
07:44Fresh, bright.
07:45It would feel completely different.
07:47I know, the sink and, like, looking out here.
07:49This is awesome.
07:50This is beautiful.
07:51It's not a cheap kitchen.
07:52It is not a cheap project.
07:54We're at, like, a $95,000 kitchen.
07:56But it's a kitchen, mudroom, laundry.
07:58Right.
07:58That's a lot of room.
07:59And bathroom.
07:59And half bath.
08:00And then this is, like, my favorite room in the house.
08:02Best room in the house.
08:03Yeah.
08:03I'm excited.
08:05Like, the ceilings are so good.
08:08And then the windows.
08:09The house just, like, opens up.
08:11Yeah, I love that part of the other house.
08:13I love it.
08:13The buildings, the wood.
08:14I love this warm wood.
08:14And these sliding doors, that's awesome.
08:16Yeah.
08:16Isn't that cool?
08:17Amazing.
08:17I think the floors are amazing, but the cork is badly faded.
08:22I'm not a fan.
08:24You don't love it?
08:25I'm a big fan.
08:25Are you?
08:26Are you a big fan?
08:27Yeah, I love it.
08:28I feel like I'm...
08:28I do, too.
08:29You're going to leave me out, but that's OK.
08:30I'm not crushing every dream that you have.
08:33Seems like it.
08:34You could love this house, maybe, if you saw how awesome your suite could be for your bedroom.
08:38For instance, this entire hallway would become your closet.
08:42Oh, wow.
08:43This is huge.
08:44From that door to this.
08:44This door would go away.
08:45Down this hallway here, we've got a tile bathroom.
08:49Taxi Cab Yellow, my favorite.
08:51It's fun, though.
08:52But it's not at all what you want.
08:54And then huge bedroom.
08:56Wow.
08:57Yeah.
08:57You would lose these doors that go to a bedroom and that front hall.
09:02OK.
09:03So we could make this your walk-in closet, but you could still access that room from the front foyer.
09:08And then we'd take out this sliding glass door that we just walked through from the den
09:12and then make a new entrance to your bedroom further down the hall.
09:16So you'd have one big walk-in closet.
09:18That is going to be a huge closet.
09:20Yeah.
09:21The bathroom stays where it is, but I was thinking you start the bathroom here.
09:26Oh, OK.
09:26You don't need these closets anymore.
09:28What I imagine is, on the left, I would want to give you a small linen closet and then a
09:32toilet room.
09:33And on the right side, this would all be built-in double vanity.
09:36And then the end of the room would be the wet room that you want.
09:40Tub on the left side, right side showers.
09:43You would have a curb.
09:44All of that would be tiled.
09:45That makes me so happy.
09:47And then the LVT would run up to that curb.
09:50That would be nice.
09:51Yeah, I like that.
09:51And then the bedroom, you can peek around.
09:53I mean, it's beautiful.
09:54It's huge.
09:54Just be paint and flooring.
09:56So much light.
09:57I love this.
09:58So all the renovations together come in a little over $200,000.
10:02OK.
10:02All in a little over $700,000.
10:05We're creating moments for our family.
10:06That's most important.
10:07There's no dollar amount for that.
10:08No.
10:09But with you working in Waynesboro, we do have another house that we want to show you.
10:13And I know a lot about Wayne County.
10:15I used to live there.
10:16So I can give you some tips on places to eat.
10:18I'm going this way.
10:19I'm going to go this way.
10:19I'm going to go this way.
10:20I'm going to go through this door.
10:22Everybody has a different door.
10:24The home is beautiful.
10:25And the fact that you can find this in the middle of the city is amazing.
10:29It's within our budget, but it's creeping a little bit over.
10:31There is a lot of stuff that needs to be done.
10:33We'll see what the next house shows.
10:35I'm not too sure about this one.
10:43I've driven by this house thousands of times, but did not know that it was back here.
10:48I mean, look at this amazing property.
10:52I mean, Evie can run.
10:53Dogs can run around.
10:54Yeah.
10:54Let's step up in the shade so we can really see the Kelly house.
10:58It's a big house.
10:59Kelly family.
11:01Everybody knows them.
11:02I actually went to school with some of their family.
11:04Earlier today, we looked at a 3-3-3-3.
11:07This is a 2-2-2-2?
11:09This is a 4-4-4-4-4 plus 1.
11:124 plus 1.
11:13So 5.
11:135 acres.
11:14Oh.
11:15So 5 acres, 4 bedrooms, 4 bathrooms, 4,000 square feet.
11:20It's listed for $525,000, so not much more than the other one.
11:23And there's a pool.
11:24Nice.
11:25One pool.
11:25One pool.
11:26But you get more land.
11:27You get more house.
11:28I mean, we're out here.
11:29But you'll be working in?
11:30Waynesboro.
11:31Waynesboro.
11:49Waynesboro.
11:51So on the exterior, $15,000.
11:53Got it.
11:54Columns, door, landscaping.
11:56I just want you to go into this with an open mind.
11:59Can you just hold that so I can gesture?
12:02Imagine if the inside was more of like a modern Santa Fe vibe.
12:07Okay.
12:07New Mexico.
12:08New Mexico.
12:09New Mexico, but a little bit Scandinavian.
12:11Okay, cool.
12:12Oh.
12:12I feel like I'm in the jungle here.
12:15All right.
12:17How do we feel about grass cloth?
12:18I actually love this.
12:20You can just update the windows.
12:22New flooring in here.
12:23Some wood flooring.
12:24Oh, I didn't even realize.
12:24What is this?
12:25It's like a towel.
12:26It's a towel that's highly tasty.
12:29But in here, $7,000.
12:30Not much.
12:31Okay.
12:31Look at this.
12:32I love the light, the windows.
12:34And you got your arches.
12:35Like, this is Gothic vibes.
12:37This is vampire vibes.
13:05This is Gothic vibes.
13:08We painted that brick that's over around the stovetop.
13:11And we kept that arch.
13:12But we take down this vent above the island.
13:15And instead of an island with a cooktop, you'd have a wall oven and microwave built in that niche over
13:19there.
13:20New stone countertops.
13:22Keeping it really light and clean, along with some minimalist flat panel cabinetry.
13:27To feel a little Scandinavian.
13:30This entire left side, a wall of beautiful pantry space.
13:35And then this peninsula, instead of it being octagonal, if it became rectangular, you could have a couple of barstools
13:41here.
13:42Letting this room become the dining room.
13:44And in here, I think we could lean, like, a little bit more Santa Fe with a fun wallpaper.
13:50I just love these saltier tile floors.
13:52I love this.
13:53This is extremely expensive and still in style.
13:56And then you remove this piece here.
13:59Let this be the family room.
14:00But beyond that, that room at the end could become a kid's den.
14:04Oh, I love that.
14:05You could build a wall with an arched-cased opening.
14:08And you can see everything through there to the kid's room.
14:11Anyway, just taking this whole house in a more fresh, bright, Santa Fe, Scandinavian direction.
14:17Love that.
14:18So $80,000 for all of these rooms.
14:21That's a lot of spaces, yeah.
14:23Let's go talk about y'all's bedroom.
14:24And we can see the pool from there, down this hallway here.
14:27Sure.
14:29So, another huge bedroom.
14:32Wow.
14:32Mid-century did it right.
14:33They would build a huge bedroom.
14:36Yeah, I like the size.
14:37And then two big closets.
14:38The two closets combined are about the same size as what we would give you at the Fagan house.
14:43Okay.
14:44The bathroom, you can check it out.
14:45It's comparable to what we saw at the Fagan house.
14:47It's just turned differently.
14:49So if you look on the left, that's like a toilet and tub room.
14:52Okay.
14:53If you can imagine a double vanity on that back wall.
14:56Okay.
14:57And that room to the left right now that has a toilet and a tub.
14:59Take this wall down.
15:00And that's your wet room area where this all would get tiled.
15:04There'd be a curb, basically, where that wall is right now.
15:07A tub on the left and shower on the right.
15:09And then we would open up a door to a toilet room by stealing the closet from that room on
15:15the other side.
15:16Okay.
15:16So it'd make it bigger.
15:17Because the house is so big.
15:17And it would make the bathroom bigger.
15:19That's amazing.
15:20For this suite would be $55,000.
15:23Okay.
15:24All of the renovations together come in, and I was very specific here, at $157,000.
15:29That brings the grand total to $682,000.
15:33Okay.
15:34So we're about $20,000 less here, but with more house.
15:37There are pros and cons to this house.
15:39I do feel like, I mean, it's further away from my family, from Moselle.
15:42But it's closer to my work.
15:44Right.
15:45I feel like, personally, you can't lose with either house.
15:49Yeah.
15:49That is a good point.
15:50This is, you're making it really hard.
15:52I don't know.
15:53I don't know how I'm going to choose.
15:55I do not know how we're going to choose, because both houses are charming.
15:58Pulling into the house, the farmland is really pretty.
16:00Lots of room for the kids and the dogs to run.
16:03The only thing I'm really concerned about is the distance from family.
16:06Yeah, there's been a lot of driving back and forth.
16:07A lot of driving.
16:08Yeah.
16:09I'm really torn.
16:22Oh, there you are.
16:23Hey, Erin.
16:24How's it going?
16:25I'm prepping for some language arts homework.
16:27What are y'all doing?
16:28Well, we have some big news.
16:30I've got a job at Waynesboro.
16:32Yeah, I'm working with this guy.
16:35Congrats.
16:36Working with your spouse every day?
16:38Hey, listen.
16:39Let me tell you something about that.
16:41You can do it.
16:42And it'll be the best thing you ever did.
16:44I promise.
16:45It's going to be great.
16:46You're buying the Kelly house then.
16:48Uh, actually...
16:53We got the Fagan house.
16:55Okay.
16:56Even though the Kelly house was lower than what we were expecting on our budget, we got
17:00the Fagan house for an even better deal.
17:02So we got it for $4.60.
17:03No, you didn't.
17:04Hey.
17:05I did.
17:06You're like, we're both going to work in Waynesboro, but if we don't care, we're going
17:09to drive.
17:10The proximity to family.
17:11I cannot, I cannot beat that.
17:13It ends up being right in the middle.
17:14It is 30 minutes each way.
17:15Do you think the house will be done before Thanksgiving?
17:17I feel sure you would be in by Thanksgiving.
17:21Okay.
17:21Awesome.
17:22So we'll get keys from you and we can get started soon.
17:25I think we're going to bridge the, you know, the Mo and Rachel vibe.
17:28So you're going to bring it together.
17:29I'm going to do my best.
17:37I just love the whole kitchen.
17:38Well, all right, let's take it out.
17:41Literally, everything's going.
17:42Yep.
17:42All right, rock and roll.
17:44What is holding this in place?
17:47I am not looking forward to demoing this house.
17:50Not even a little bit.
17:51Dang.
17:52I can't even do my drawer job.
17:54We're touching so much of the house.
17:57Nine rooms.
17:58The front hall, the living room, dining room, kitchen, adding a half bath and a laundry room,
18:04the den and primary bedroom and bathroom.
18:07This is one of those where the house is very big, but so is this scope of work.
18:13Houses built in the 50s by people who had great taste.
18:16They built things so well.
18:19They are hard to take apart.
18:24We told Rachel and I that this kitchen was going to be a bear, and it is mad.
18:30Old school cabinetry like this was installed using millions of nails.
18:34It was meant to be like this forever.
18:37Troy, hang on to it.
18:38Let's try it.
18:39Come on.
18:40Hang on.
18:42I'm up.
18:47Let's stand it up.
18:50Oh, yeah.
18:53The shower tile turned out to be more difficult than we thought it was going to be.
18:56That's because our biggest problem with this house is that the ceiling and walls are thick
19:00plaster over metal mesh backing embedded in cement.
19:04It doesn't come out in one piece.
19:06It shatters.
19:07It breaks.
19:08It crumbles.
19:08And it's two to three times slower to remove than what we usually deal with,
19:12which is sheetrock over wood framing.
19:15These mid-century houses that were like still kind of in the old way of doing things,
19:20but with the new materials.
19:23Holy smokes.
19:24The combination is fortress.
19:26They're unstoppable.
19:29So more demo today.
19:31Are we sure we don't want to save the cork floor?
19:33I also am obsessed with it, but Rachel does not love it.
19:36If you want to save it, I want to save it.
19:38We'll just put it in a pile somewhere.
19:40I don't know why or what I'll do with it.
19:42Just want to hold on to it for a little while longer.
19:44See if we can get just one up.
19:46It's way down.
19:47So this is as thick as wood flooring.
19:49I mean, this is locked in.
19:52This is like watching Tom Hanks try to start a fire on Castaway.
19:56Is the cork floor our Wilson?
19:57Yeah.
19:59That's it!
20:03Look at that.
20:06Nothing is built sturdier than this house.
20:17This will be the room where the kids play the most,
20:20but also a room for grown-ups when they're hosting and entertaining
20:24and have family in town.
20:26This will be the main den for everybody.
20:28And she wants so much storage.
20:31And then I just think this is like the coolest thing.
20:34That's where my kids would be.
20:36It's the perfect little hide-and-seek spot.
20:38And you would have the little secret tunnel.
20:40That's where my brothers would have locked me in if it was mine.
20:42Aw.
20:43It is a little too small for two kids, though.
20:46So what do you think about if we took this closet
20:51that won't really open bow up on it?
20:55There we go.
20:56She doesn't really care about this closet, but I wondered,
21:00why don't we take some of this space and put that secret hiding spot right here?
21:03We have the space to do that on this side of the fireplace, but on the other side...
21:08Oh, pantry.
21:09Yeah.
21:10Yeah, we can't steal anything else from in here.
21:12Can't steal any of this.
21:12The kids would love it.
21:13The kids would love it.
21:21I think we underestimated what this house was going to take time-wise.
21:25So now we're behind.
21:27So I'm nervous.
21:29This is a problem that I have personally never seen before.
21:33We got something for you.
21:35Aw, I heard something is wrong.
21:37I've never seen that.
21:39I mean, it's concrete between the joists?
21:42Well, this had a solid tile with a grout bed in it.
21:46And this is a solid bed of concrete between the joists.
21:48But this is a raised foundation, so this is very strange.
21:52I mean, you see it in, like, New York City skyscrapers,
21:56where it's, you know, every floor is concrete.
21:58Lower Mississippi don't have many houses with concrete on the upstairs.
22:01So the problem is we're moving the toilet across the room.
22:03So I got to move the toilet from here to over there.
22:06Now the tub was there, now it's going over here.
22:08Normally, we can run the pipe through a void between 2x12 wooden floor joists.
22:14Except there's concrete.
22:16However, that void is full of concrete.
22:17So it's wood, concrete, wood, concrete, wood, concrete, wood, concrete.
22:22I got to jackhammer this up, and I'm kind of scared to jackhammer it.
22:25That just seems kind of dangerous.
22:27Oh, yeah, it's an all-open room there.
22:28And there's a tall bathroom down there below, too,
22:30and I don't want to mess something up.
22:32Moving plumbing in a concrete floor is always challenging.
22:36It's more challenging when you cannot use a jackhammer.
22:39We may wind up just sawing it and then turn around and bust it up by hand.
22:43We'll be less collateral damage.
22:45This is a special, special scenario.
22:48It was already special because we were doing a wet ram.
22:51Now it's even more special because it's a bomb shelter.
22:58It's going to be an extra.
22:59What's the damage?
23:00$1,500, depending on what we run into when we get in here.
23:05Talking about two or three days of dealing with it.
23:07Well, great.
23:08Well, we'll get it.
23:09We've had problems this bad or worse before.
23:11You don't want to hurt anything downstairs.
23:13No way.
23:14So they're just going to take a diamond blade, cut the concrete.
23:19Tap it out.
23:19And then chip it out.
23:26It's been slow here, and now it will continue to be slow here.
23:38We're deep in the heart of Moselle, which is probably 25 minutes from Laurel.
23:43We're here to check out the old barn.
23:45And this matters because Rachel and Mose are going to be a lot closer now.
23:49She lost her dad very recently, and so her mom's on her own for the first time.
23:53And it's been tough.
23:54Tough.
23:54Really, it's been tough.
23:56Good to see you.
23:56I'll get a hug.
23:57Put that away.
23:57Come on.
23:58Oh, thank you.
23:59Miss Angie.
23:59Hey, nice to meet y'all.
24:01Good to meet you.
24:02Is this the barn?
24:03This is the barn.
24:04I don't even know when it was built, but we're assuming like 150 years old.
24:08Wow.
24:08This land was where my dad grew up.
24:11My father just passed away from pancreatic cancer.
24:15It's been really, really hard.
24:17He got to see my son being born and being here, so that's most important.
24:21I think that first holiday is going to be rough.
24:23Really rough.
24:23Because we know someone's going to be missing, but he'll be there.
24:27He'll be there.
24:28This is just fresh.
24:30His family's land.
24:31Yeah.
24:32I love that.
24:32This has been here this long.
24:34Wow.
24:34I remember exploring this barn whenever I was a kid.
24:37They raised cows.
24:39Okay.
24:39And so this was a cow farm.
24:42And we still have, there's a bunch of wood in there, and then there's stuff that was salvaged
24:47from that old house.
24:48I'm glad it's cold now.
24:49There shouldn't be sinks.
24:50Oh.
24:51Oh, good point.
24:52Do you need me to get up in there?
24:54No, I'm just looking.
24:56What's this lumber from?
24:57We don't know.
24:58Some of it is very old.
25:00Grandpa had lots of projects.
25:02But it just never got done.
25:04No, it wouldn't.
25:04So it would be really nice if it can be utilized to finally be used.
25:08Complete.
25:08Exactly.
25:09My kind of man.
25:10Now, Ben.
25:11What is it you want me to look at?
25:12I'm just curious about if this is something.
25:15It was in the old house for a long time.
25:16It's a bench.
25:17Did you draw hearts on it, Rachel?
25:19Probably.
25:20Over the years, it's been used for the kids.
25:23Storage, toys, books, that kind of stuff.
25:26Come here.
25:28What do you think?
25:29It's red.
25:31Like, right in the stone floor?
25:35This is it.
25:35So you're talking about when you walk in, you got the stone floor somewhere.
25:39Are you on the left or around by the stairs?
25:42On the left.
25:43Can we use it?
25:44Yes.
25:45Okay.
25:45Yeah, yeah.
25:46When you lose someone that you love, the next thing we have are the objects that they left behind.
25:53There's all this lumber in here.
25:55While we're looking through it, Rachel's telling me that he always had ideas for projects he was going to build.
26:00And so in this way, it's kind of like he's getting to finish a project with this lumber.
26:05Mm-hmm.
26:06Don't let it fall in your heart, stop burning.
26:13All right.
26:13I just want to go ahead and apologize because you can look around and see.
26:17We are way, way behind.
26:20The plumbing had so many problems.
26:21We had to take an extra week to work all that out.
26:24Yes.
26:24We got a lot of floor prep in here.
26:26I don't have a spigot yet.
26:28I can't start until that happens.
26:29So this is going to be your bathroom floor?
26:32That's the floor, only in the wet room.
26:34Okay.
26:35Rachel likes a Swedish influence, a little bit mid-century design style.
26:40This will be the flooring in here, in the vanity and toilet room.
26:44This is our tile.
26:45We're going to wrap the whole room.
26:48That is a very small tile.
26:50Keep getting littler and littler.
26:51I'm sorry.
26:52How are you going to run it?
26:54Vertical stack, a modern mid-century look.
26:56That's a lot with this little small tile.
26:59I'm leaving it in a couple of weeks.
27:01Maybe weeks.
27:02You know, they're moving in the week of Thanksgiving,
27:04and it's really important to them to have Thanksgiving at home.
27:09But it's not actually ready for me.
27:12It's not.
27:13We will hope for the best.
27:17Thank you for everything you do.
27:25Stubbs, did you come to this house before we tore it out?
27:28I did not.
27:29This house was designed and built to never change.
27:33I think this is the third reschedule for me.
27:36Because Demo went on and on and on.
27:38Yeah, I've heard about it.
27:39I've heard a lot about this house.
27:40The real thing that's different here is the island.
27:44Okay.
27:44We want the island to be seven feet.
27:47But it's going to have two levels.
27:49Okay.
27:50With a stone top.
27:51Right.
27:51And it'll be two feet deep.
27:53Standard height.
27:54Standard height.
27:55Got it.
27:56But then, on this side of it,
27:58you'll have a little waterfall backsplash
28:00on the backside down to a level
28:02that's more like a dinner table
28:05that's just for the kids.
28:06Butcher block top.
28:07And it should be a more modern silhouette.
28:09The house is very mid-century.
28:11I'll build a frame and you cover it.
28:12How about that, man?
28:13I like it.
28:14I like it.
28:16I hope that this whole house
28:18just feels like the happiest new chapter.
28:20Now we get to customize it.
28:22And it starts with an island
28:24that is very unusual.
28:28Tony is putting in a new subfloor
28:31for David to work upon in the bathroom.
28:34Once Tony's finished,
28:35David can finally get started.
28:37And then our two weeks of tile clock
28:40will begin, I guess.
28:42Unless he's found some way to make it faster.
28:44I don't know.
28:51Look at that.
28:52The front door looks so good.
28:56It's the more modern,
28:57less is more Montessori,
29:00Swedish meets mid-century look
29:02Rachel and Mo are looking for.
29:04It's a good-looking door.
29:05You ain't kidding.
29:05Yeah, it is.
29:13We've got Yellow Pine
29:14and the Old Country store bench
29:16from Rachel's parents' house.
29:19Erin wants to put it
29:20in the entryway of the house.
29:21When you come in the front door,
29:22right there,
29:23even though I am the one building this,
29:25she will think of her dad
29:27every time she sees it.
29:28That's the goal here,
29:29just to tell the story.
29:35Countertops are here.
29:36Have you picked out a cabinet color?
29:38How are y'all today?
29:40We're all right.
29:41We're not ready for countertops.
29:43No?
29:44Should we come back?
29:45Nope.
29:45This house has been a nightmare to work on,
29:47so we're behind on everything,
29:49but we're not behind on countertops,
29:51so we're going to install them.
29:52Okay.
29:53Got to be today.
29:54Anything with scheduling,
29:56if you turn it away,
29:57it's a domino effect.
29:58The other things that will now get delayed.
30:01So you just take what you can
30:02when it can come on time.
30:04Because if you turn them away,
30:05they may say,
30:06okay, well,
30:07we can squeeze you in on December 1st.
30:16Yeah, look at the DJ.
30:21Look at him go.
30:23This is going to add a couple steps
30:25for the painters
30:26to have to tape, tarp, cover
30:29all of our beautiful, fresh stone
30:31before they can paint.
30:33But that's okay.
30:34And then, you know,
30:35the plumbing,
30:36get here when it gets here,
30:37and, you know...
30:38I think it's a win.
30:39It's totally...
30:40It's a good thing
30:41that we have countertops.
30:42We're not even close,
30:43are we?
30:44No, you've got a long ways to go.
30:53I think things are moving.
30:54Things are picking up.
30:55Got a lot of painters here.
30:57I mean, we've got all the trim
30:58and the cabinets are done in here.
30:59That looks good.
31:00Soon, we're going to have stone
31:01coming in for around the fireplace,
31:03on the fireplace round.
31:04This is all good progress.
31:06Good morning.
31:08Oh, good morning.
31:09That looks so good.
31:10It isn't going as fast
31:12as we wanted it to.
31:13It took me about four days
31:15to get all this ready.
31:16Yeah.
31:17I'm looking at another week.
31:18The day after Thanksgiving.
31:19Yes.
31:23I know y'all wanted this Thanksgiving,
31:25but it's just not happening.
31:27We were late getting you in here.
31:29That's not your fault.
31:30No, huh?
31:31At this point,
31:32if we're going to miss it,
31:33let's just miss it.
31:34You've done everything right.
31:35Thank you so much.
31:36Everything's awesome.
31:36You always do.
31:37Have a happy Thanksgiving.
31:38Yeah, you too.
31:38Please.
31:39I'll call Mo.
31:43Hey, Mo.
31:44Hey, guys.
31:44What's up?
31:45Happy Thanksgiving.
31:47We're ready for it.
31:47Yeah.
31:48Do you want to tell me?
31:48Mm-hmm.
31:49Okay, so we are not going
31:51to have y'all in for Thanksgiving.
31:53Oh, no.
31:54Rachel was really hoping
31:55to do something for that.
31:57The thing is,
31:57nothing's wrong with your house.
31:59Yeah.
31:59We have not had any problems
32:01except for it is too good.
32:04We're not kidding.
32:05Yeah, this is not a joke.
32:06This is not a joke.
32:06Seriously, your house is so well-built.
32:09That it has fought us
32:12every step of the way.
32:13I guess it's a good thing
32:14it's built.
32:15Yes.
32:16The way it is, right?
32:16You bought an incredible house.
32:18That makes me feel a lot better.
32:19I thought it was going to be
32:20something really bad.
32:21No.
32:21I'm just sorry
32:22because I know
32:23this is going to be
32:23a hard Thanksgiving.
32:25Hopefully Christmas.
32:26Yeah.
32:27Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah.
32:27No, it'll be the week
32:29after Thanksgiving.
32:30That's no big deal.
32:31Okay.
32:31I'm sure Rachel
32:32will be fine with it.
32:33All right, bye, Mo.
32:34Bye.
32:34See you later.
32:36I ain't gonna hesitate.
32:39I need to hustle, hustle.
32:42I have never, ever, ever
32:43seen this many work trucks
32:45at any of our projects
32:46at a given time.
32:47In 10 years,
32:48in 140-something houses,
32:50there has never been
32:51this much activity
32:52at one house.
32:52Everybody's working
32:53on top of each other,
32:55but hardware's going on
32:56every door and every drawer,
32:57every drawer front
32:58and every cabinet door.
32:59The appliances are coming in.
33:01All of our electrical stuff
33:03is getting tucked away.
33:04All the painters are painting
33:05all the trim
33:06in all the rooms
33:07and all the walls
33:08and touching up every scratch.
33:10We have a two-piece tub
33:11that is going wall-to-wall
33:14on three sides.
33:15We're bringing them home
33:16this week.
33:17No pressure.
33:18It's gonna be close,
33:18but we're gonna make it happen.
33:20The butcher block kitchen table
33:22that's affixed to the island
33:23is being installed.
33:24It changes the way
33:26the room feels.
33:26Friday, we're bringing them home,
33:28which means they have
33:29until 5 p.m. tomorrow
33:31to finish everything
33:33so then the house
33:34can be deep cleaned,
33:36and then we can move in furniture
33:38and all the beautiful things.
33:40Where in the world
33:41you come up with this?
33:42It's real cork.
33:43This was on the floor
33:44in the sunroom,
33:44and I think
33:45that it would be really cool
33:47to turn it into backsplash
33:49just inside these cabinets here.
33:51Landscaping's happening.
33:53We're painting the trim
33:54around the windows.
33:55We got like an entire
33:57month-long projects
33:58worth of work left to do.
33:59And we have 48 hours.
34:06This is my Christmas gift this year
34:09that we finished
34:10the Bilal's house.
34:11We miss Thanksgiving
34:13in the house for them,
34:14but Christmas is coming.
