BAMM! Ep 637: IRAN - Back to the Past !
‎Analyst: Dr-Kamran Jawaid Aziz

‎Before 1979, Iran under Shah Mohammad Reza Pahlavi was a modernizing and relatively secular state, marked by Western cultural influence, urban development, and greater social freedoms—especially for women—despite political repression. Following the Islamic Revolution led by Ruhollah Khomeini, the country shifted to a Shari’a-based Islamic Republic with strict religious laws governing dress, behavior, and public life. Today, Iran appears to be experiencing a cultural tension between these two eras: while some segments of society remain committed to traditional religious values, a growing number—particularly younger generations—are pushing for a return to greater social freedoms and a more moderate expression of Islam, creating an ongoing societal clash between past modernity and post-revolution ideology.

01:02mid-20th century
01:03Iran was ruled by a dynasty that pushed rapid westernization
01:07European clothes parties and secularism replacing traditional Islamic life
01:12the dynasty allied closely with the West
01:14giving foreign powers major control over Iran's oil and culture
01:18many religious groups saw this as a betrayal of Islamic values
01:22land reforms took property from Islamic endowments and secular laws replaced Sharia courts the government silenced clerics but resentment grew
01:31quietly then came the movement led by a religious leader Ayatollah Khomeini millions rose up demanding the end of the
01:38dynasty and a return to Islamic rule in 1979 the dynasty collapsed the Islamic Republic was born merging religion with
01:45state power for some it restored faith and independence for others it replaced freedom with control
